Racism persists in Canada Dear Editor,

Re: “Canada helping Ukraine isn’t rooted in racism,” Letters, March 17. Sorry, but Canada not helping refugees from Syria and Afghanistan is rooted in racism.

He also doesn’t seem to understand NATO. NATO was a Western alliance formed when the Soviet Union existed to stop Soviet expansion. During the 1990s, the Soviet Union fell, which made NATO obsolete. It should have been disbanded at that time. Instead, NATO became a branch of the U.S. arms manufacturing industry and began pushing into Eastern Europe.

Just as Canada’s settlements of native lands that were stolen from Indigenous people and given to white Americans, white British, white Ukrainians and Hungarians and other people from white European countries, under the authority of Clifford Sifton, the immigration officer at the time the prairies were being settled. Blacks need not apply.

More members, more arms contracts for American arms dealers. This has been NATO’s singular purpose since the Soviet Union fell and there was no more threat of Soviet expansion.

It was also based in racism when Canada sent back Indian people, as well as Jewish people who tried to escape the death camps in Nazi Germany. The Chinese head tax was based in racism.

Wendy Miko

The letter writer above also contradicts himself when he claims that Canada has no obligation to help Afghanis and Syrians because they are not members of NATO, but has a duty to help Ukraine who is also not a member of NATO.

Former bellhop recalls Skyline Dear Editor,

Re: “Do you remember the Skyline Hotel?” News, March 17. Who remembers the Skyline Hotel? Well, I certainly do because in 1958 and 1959 I worked weekends as the nightshift bellhop while I was still going to Richmond Senior Secondary school. It was, as any night-shift bellhop at any hotel will confirm, an experience filled with a smorgasbord of encounters with people from all walks of life and from all corners of the globe. Many of those encounters should not be shared in print, including an awkward face-to-face I had with one of my teachers who was spending the night at the hotel, but there were also a lot of nice experiences that provided me with quite a few pleasant memories. The hotel didn’t have an elevator at the time so I got a lot of exercise carrying heavy bags up and down the stairs. Being so close to the airport, the hotel was also used for layovers for flight crews from several airlines and they always kept the hotel staff busy with food orders

and room service — and they were good tippers as well!

I believe there were two or three owners at the time — all businessmen from Winnipeg — and I remember their frugality because, when one of them visited, they would get me to accompany them through the rooms as we changed all the lightbulbs to lower wattages. The lounge, right next to the front desk, was a busy, sometimes raucous, place, and the beer parlour at the front of the building was a popular hangout for airport workers and taxi drivers. One of the benefits of working the late shift was that you could go into the kitchen after the restaurant closed and make your own sandwiches and drink all the soda pop you wanted. Yes, I remember the Skyline Hotel. For this young high school kid it was a place where I learned a lot of things about human personalities and behaviour I could never have learned in school, and I have always been thankful for having that.

Focus on renewables Dear Editor,

While the world watches the Ukraine war with horror, the Canadian media, Conservatives and oil and gas lobbyists unleashed a reckless campaign for fossil fuel expansion. They are advocating for increasing the global presence of Canadian fossil fuel to curb the supply deficit, specifically in the European Union (EU), amid the ongoing RussoUkrainian War; such an economic strategy is unethical, misguided and dangerous. Furthermore, this false narrative dominates the news that more Canadian fossil fuels will help Europe break up with Russian oil. Conservatives MPs even proposed a motion to ram through gas pipelines.

However, this isn’t about peace or energy security. It’s about lining the pockets of the oil and gas industry and its backers by profiteering from war.

And it’ll devastate our climate in the process. Considering the United States is courting Venezuela, Iran and Saudi Arabia to meet the surplus demand, Canada should focus on regional rather than international supply. The European plan to adopt renewable sources underscores the significance of fast-track development. With the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report attributing increased human suffering in the next two decades to expanding Canadian fossil

fuel supply to the EU, this underscores the unethical practices of the gas and oil industry in the world. Therefore, Canada should support the International Energy Agency’s (IEA’s) comprehensive initiative to reduce European countries’ reliance on Russian gas with renewable energy rather than offering substitutes. Canada could help end the reliance on Russian oil and gas by putting people to work on the transition away from fossil fuels — but we need to counter the fossil fuel lobby’s media spin.

Richmond behind on rentals Dear Editor,

Richmond city council decides whether to build desperately needed rental or condos mostly for sale to investors. In 2018, the B.C. government gave council the power to zone land for rental-only housing. That increases its value from its current zoning for singlefamily housing or low-rise commercial. The alternative chosen by council is to instead zone it for strata

condos. That increases the land value even higher beyond what is profitable for rental housing.

From 2018 to 2021, Richmond built 13 per cent rental and 87 per cent condos. Shameful! Surrey built 46 per cent rental, Vancouver 32 per cent. Of neighbouring cities, only Burnaby built less rental. Burnaby has now turned this around with 10,000 rental units in the pipeline, leaving Richmond at the

bottom of the rental housing construction list. Some Richmond investors are choosing to speculate in real estate by buying strata condos creating artificial demand. They have a vote for Richmond council. Potential renters who work in Richmond can’t afford to live here and don’t have a vote.

Illegal ride-hailing easily accessible Maria Rantanen & Nono Shen MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

If you’re looking to hail a cheap ride, Richmond is the place to be — if word on the street is anything to go by. Some believe the city has become the hub for a host of ride-hailing apps that can take you from point A to point B for about twothirds the price of an Uber — never mind a cab. However, there are a couple of catches. One, to use some of the apps, you have to speak Chinese and, two, they’re illegal. To test the theory a couple of Richmond News reporters called two of the betterknown ride-hailing apps that do not have a licence to operate anywhere in Metro Vancouver. Five minutes after calling Raccoon Go, a Toyota pulled up to Lansdowne Shopping Centre to pick up the reporters. A quick jaunt from Lansdowne to Richmond City Hall cost $10 in cash.

At city hall, hailing a ride using another illegal app, UDI-X, was a bit slower, but eventually a Tesla pulled up and drove the News reporters back to Lansdowne, again for $10, but the driver refused to give a receipt. Both drivers told the News they would rather be driving for Uber — which is legal in B.C. — but neither of them had a Class 4 driver’s licence.

Ride-hailing is regulated by the Passenger Transportation Branch (PTB), and drivers are required to have a Class 4 licence, undergo a vulnerable-persons criminal record check and the ride-hailing company itself must have the correct insurance. ICBC warns passengers who use illegal ridehailing that the vehicle “may not have the required insurance to protect passengers in the event of a crash.” These two ride-hailing apps advertise on WeChat and Apple Store. Minister warns of consequences The Minister of Transportation had a dire warning for illegal ride-hailing services, saying investigations are underway and

there will be crackdowns.

fine for not having a business licence.

“I would say to those engaging in this industry, there will be significant penalties that will really impact their ability to ever work in the ground transportation industry and they should cease doing it immediately,” Fleming told the Richmond News.

Furthermore, app-based ride-hailing services are “sophisticated” in how they operate and are hard to catch, Adams added.

However, those who provide the apps and hire drivers to use them, in fact, do not face penalties. It is the drivers, some making well below minimum wage, who bear full responsibility for the fines. Regardless, fines from both the province and the City of Richmond have been few and far between. Last year, the PTB only issued 33 fines in Richmond — 106 all together in the province — and the City of Richmond only fined about six illegal ride-hailing drivers for not having a business licence in the last six months of 2021. Richmond city spokesperson Clay Adams said the city recognizes it must be frustrating for legal ride-hailing companies to know so many illegal ones are operating.

The Raccoon Go driver told the News, factoring in the commission he pays to the app and gas prices, he’s making about $10 per hour, whereas, the UDI-X driver told the News she works three to four hours per day, and earns about $100 per shift. But, she added, driving an electric vehicle cuts down on her costs. She claimed she knew of people working day and night, earning up to $10,000 per month. For both of these drivers, ride-hailing is just a part-time job. Comparing prices between illegal apps and Uber, the price difference was about 30 per cent. Fleming told the News, while he’d rather defer to the minister of public safety, there are “a number of investigations underway,” with crackdowns involving ICBC and the Passenger Transportation Board.

However, the city is limited in what it can do as its only enforcement tool is to give a

Soaring costs affecting farmers in different ways Alan Campbell

ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

If you think fresh produce is expensive right now in B.C., just wait to this summer and fall. That’s the stark warning from one of Richmond’s most prominent farmers, Bill Zylmans, owner/operator of W&A Farms, who has around 250 acres of mainly potato and strawberry fields. Russia’s top export to Canada in 2021 was fertilizer, and with Canada slapping trade sanctions on Russia, it has caused a massive spike in the cost of fertilizer, which was already on the rise. Throw in the soaring fuel costs — due also, in part, to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine — and local farmers are having to re-think their spring planting strategy. What it could mean, said Zylmans, is farmers planting and/or harvesting less crops, causing prices to rise even more for people looking for local produce from May through to October.

“My suppliers are telling me right now that, when I start planting May 1 for the fall, my fertilizer costs are going to be double what they were last year,” Zylmans told the Richmond News.

mans, haven’t darkened the door of one local organic farmer, who has yet to feel the full impact of the global supply spike.

Kimi Hendess, who runs Sweet Digz Farm at the south end of No. 2 Road, said that’s because their main cost is labour.

“I’m like, ‘well, thanks for telling me. Holy crap.’ You do a budget, you do a business plan, and you borrow money — if you need to — you put in a crop. “But look at the gasoline and diesel prices, how much of that did we foresee? “Fertilizer is going to double. Diesel is up 35 per cent. Other ingredients are up 50 per cent. Labour is going up again in June. “Plastics or any other materials needed for bringing something to market, be it strawberries, cucumber or potato, everything is going up dramatically. “At the end of the day, the consumer is going to have to pay more.” Zylmans said he didn’t want it to sound like farmers such as he were pleading poverty and he did temper the soaring costs by saying he hoped he wouldn’t have to put prices up too much. “You’re gonna pay more. I’m not going to

I have to be realistic. We need food,” said Zylmans, who’s also the chair of the Canadian Potato Council. “If there’s one thing that we farmers struggle with is, ‘can the consumer afford that?’” Organic farmer not feeling pinch At the opposite end of the spectrum, however, the cost clouds forming over the heads of conventional farmers, such as Zyl-

It’s expensive to hire local labour, added Hendess, but that — by default or design — means the farm uses less fuel and the large-scale fertilizer employed by their conventional counterparts. “We’ve been seeing this happening for years because of climate change,” Hendess told the News. “Because we’re small, we have very small tractors. They’re walkbehind, 18 horse-power, so we don’t go through as much fuel. “We’re a much more bio intensive production, in a smaller space, so our fuel use is a lot lower and we do a lot more by hand. That’s our versatility.” Hendess said the cost for their plantbased compost has gone up significantly, but that’s only because they have to get it delivered from Abbotsford, as opposed to picking it up locally and the now-closed composting facility in east Richmond.

Cops probe ‘suspicious’ incident at air park Valerie Leung

VLEUNG@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Richmond RCMP is investigating a “suspicious circumstance” at Richmond’s Extreme Air Park earlier this week. According to police, a parent in a monitoring room observed a man “allegedly pulling down a young child’s pants” during a dark laser tag game at the local business. The alleged incident happened on March 14 between 4:45 and 5:15 p.m. The complainant reported their observation to a staff member, who immediately turned on the lights and attended the area. However, staff did not see anything suspicious. Cpl. Adriana O’Malley, media spokesperson for the Richmond RCMP, said the complainant could not give a detailed description of those involved because it “was dark and there were lasers operating.” “The complainant viewed the incident

through a television, which cycles through surveillance from various cameras located throughout the business,” said O’Malley.

Richmond’s single-use plastic ban starts March 27

“This is a very serious allegation and we are doing everything we can to attempt to identify those involved.” O’Malley told the Richmond News in an email that an “initial review” of the video surveillance where the incident occurred was done, but “nothing suspicious was observed.”

Richmond’s Single-Use Plastic and Other Items Bylaw No. 10000 bans:

The investigation, she added, is active and ongoing, and Richmond RCMP is continuing to liaise with the complainant.

• foam food service ware • plastic straws (including biodegradable and compostable plastic) • plastic checkout bags (including biodegradable and compostable plastic)

The business is also “fully cooperating” with the police and providing evidence that could help with the investigation, said O’Malley. The Richmond News has reached out to the business for comment but did not hear back by press time. Anyone who may have witnessed, or have information regarding this file, can call Richmond RCMP at 604-278-1212.

Here’s how you can help

• Bring reusable bags when shopping. • Bring a reusable cup when picking up a coffee, tea or other beverage. • Bring your own reusable straw or simply avoid using straws.

Each year, at least eight million tonnes of plastics leak into the ocean – which is equivalent to dumping the contents of one garbage truck into the ocean every minute. Learn more about Bylaw 10000 and how you can help reduce plastic waste and pollution.

‘Insensitive’ comments cause stir at conference

A board member of the Tourism Industry Associa-

two weeks ago.

Vivek Sharma, who is the CEO of Fairmont Hot Springs Resort in the Rockies, said in an apology letter that “not only did my words cause distress for several women in the audience but I also offended many other delegates.” Several people have posted on social media about Sharma’s comments, saying he told the women — after recognizing International Women’s Day — to “go clean rooms and wash dishes.” One social media poster said Sharma tried to make light of his comments, but the poster didn’t feel it was enough but, rather, it made it worse. Sharma stepped down from TIABC as well as the BC Hotel Association boards. In his apology letter, Sharma said his comments don’t reflect the views of either tourism association boards that he was part of. “As a result of my recent conduct, I have let down valued colleagues who love and care about me,” he added in the apology letter. But one of his most recent

LaRocca — who posts videos and photos of his travails on social media under FraserRiverFinds — last week found what appeared to be a military flare. He said he always shoots his videos live and never stages them, so he didn’t realize what he had in his hand until he picked up the canister and turned it over. Once he sussed out what he had in his grasp, he gently laid it back down and called the RCMP. The RCMP told the Richmond News that the device belonged to the Canadian Armed Forces, who were contacted for “safe removal and disposal.” They added that, if you find something like this, “minimize contact and vibration” near it, including using a cell phone close to it and then call police. News launches cherry blossom photo contest Nono Shen NSHEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

It’s time to get those cameras and phones ready because cherry blossom season is just around the corner in Richmond.

Akebono cherry trees blossom at Garry Point Park, usually starting in early April.

In Japan, a tradition called hanami — which means “flower viewing” — involves admiring cherry blossoms and having a picnic underneath the pink trees. While there are different types of cherry blossoms around the world, the colour and shape of the flower can often be mistaken for plum blossoms. But one thing that’s for sure is that all cherry tree flowers share the same characteristics, including having a split at the end of each petal, and oval

There are 54 types of cherry blossoms in Canada.

The Akebono tree was chosen for Garry Point Park due to its hardy nature and ability to withstand cool and wet climates — perfect considering the park’s proximity to the Pacific Ocean.

Garry Point Park is home to 255 Akebono cherry trees, which are considered one of the world’s most popular cher-

Best of Richmond back

The 14th annual Best of Richmond is back again for community members to cast a vote for their favourite businesses in the city.

Now, as case counts go down and restrictions are lifted, they have a chance to transition from surviving to thriving.

We are up against one of our Glacier Media sister titles, the Tri-City News, based out of Coquitlam, and the Surrey Now-Leader.

Slow Cooked Beef Pot Roast

In preparation for the arrival of cherry blossom season, the News has rounded up some of the city’s top photo spots this spring.

Many local businesses have fought hard to stay alive on the COVID-19 pandemic battlefield.

The News is one of three nominees in one of the Newspaper Excellence categories in the BCYCNA Ma Murray Awards.

The awards gala will be held in May at the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond — after two years of virtual galas — where dozens of awards will be handed out for all kinds of excellence in community newspapers, from writing to advertising and service to the industry.

Meanwhile, the timing of blossoming cherry trees appears to depend on the species itself, according to city spokesperson Clay Adams.

The Best of Richmond contest gives the community an opportunity to make that happen by supporting their favourite businesses. Richmond News has been nominated for an industry award.

All-female crews ref hockey tournament Alan Campbell ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

The Richmond Ice Classic had all-female crews officiating for the first time.

After two years’ hiatus due to the COVID pandemic, the 24th Annual Richmond Ice Classic Tournament kicked off last weekend. Hosted by the Richmond Ravens Female Hockey Association, the tournament attracted 1,000 female athletes and 66 teams to the Richmond Ice Centre to play 143 games — all of which were officiated, for the first time at the event, by all-female referees. Forty of those teams were from out-of-town, travelling from as far as Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Oregon. And there was some local success for the Ravens, with their U15 C2 team taking home the gold med-

al — beating the Victoria Reign — while the U13 C1 and U15 C1 teams both grabbed the silver. The youngest players played small-sided games on half rinks and all received participation medals, while the older teams, from ages nine to 18, competed to earn spots in championship games. “We are especially proud that all 143 games of the tournament were refereed by all-female officials,” said Mark Kusec, Richmond Ra-

vens tournament director. “This is a new achievement for the Ravens, and full credit goes to our refereein-chief, Lolly Gagnon, and all of the fantastic young officials who participated. “For many of the participating teams who travelled, it was their first hockey tournament ever, and for some it was their first time seeing other female hockey teams. “For a few guests, it was even their first time seeing the city or the ocean.

Canadians bow out of playoffs The Richmond-based U18 AAA Greater Vancouver Canadians (GVC) are out of the BCEHL playoffs, losing the series 2-1 in round two. The team, which plays out of the Olympic Oval, actually led the series, after beating the first-placed Vancouver North East Chiefs 4-2 on Friday night. But GVC couldn’t keep the Chiefs at bay in games two and three, going down 4-3 and 4-2 respectively. The Canadians previously won a best-ofthree series 2-1 in round one of the playoffs, with game three versus the Valley

And for some of the oldest players, this was their last games of minor hockey ever, which made it extra meaningful.” For more photos, search Ravens at Richmond-News.com

Ursula(Schmelzer) Binderberger

Kids and Adults Needed to deliver the Richmond News.

Papers are delivered to your door. No need to insert flyers either! Deliver once a week, on Thursdays, right in your neighbourhood. Call our Distribution Department for information.

Ursula, born June 18, 1950, passed away at 71 with determination, inner strength, and finally with peace on March 14, 2022. She was true to herself until the end. Born in Mexico City and spending much time at the beach growing up, Ursula had a special bond with the ocean. After immigrating to Canada at 25, she took great comfort in living so close to the waves that connected her to her ‘México lindo y querido’, while building a life for her family in Richmond, and during her later years in Gibsons. As a young woman, Ursula embraced life with a genuine sense of humour, curiosity, and an avid drive for knowledge and life-long learning. Combined with her natural ability to connect with young children on a heartfelt level, she found her calling as a teacher. Ursula believed in doing her very best in everything she put her hand to. Her tenacity, resolve, discerning mind, and selfless unbounded caring touched many lives. Family, friends, neighbours, and 18 years of students and parents at Hansel and Gretel Preschool knew they could trust in Ursula to unabashedly offer them her guidance and helping hands.

Diagnosed with cancer at the age of 60, she navigated living with her disease for the next 11 years with her hallmark courage and selfassuredness. In this last year she knew she was blessed by the support of Drs Corrie Belgraver, Brenda Li Pak Tong, and Rayna Sivakova, Nurse Ruth Wentzell, as well as the caring nurses at Sechelt Hospital and the amazing team at Howe Sound Pharmacy. She found special comfort in the soulful care of Renate Kroesa and Eva Kanaszyc. Ursula’s life would not have been the same without the unconditional love and support from our “Tante Margreth”, who through the years has become part of our family. Ursula leaves behind three unique daughters and sons-in-law and six grandchildren: Stefanie and Simon (with Anna, Peter and Kerstin), Erika and Frank (with Nik and Kevin), and Heidi and Derek (with Kai). Mama, you imparted your strength of character on us and it is shared by us all. You will be missed. A private family service will be held. The family requests no flowers. In Ursula’s honour, donations can be made to the Sunshine Coast Hospice Society or the Canadian Neuroendocrine Tumour Society.

PLANT, Marnie Marnie passed away peacefully in Vancouver, in the same hospital where she, her mother and her grandmother were born. Predeceased by her parents Paul Plant and Frances Plant, she is survived by her brother Geoff (Janet); sister Brenda (Matt Jameson); niece Caroline (Greg); nephew Graham (Sarah), and their children, who all knew and loved her as their wonderful Auntie Marn. Marnie was a person of great intelligence and insight who put her energy, skills and compassion to use in serving others, budding entrepreneurs, aspiring politicians, and community non-profits. Although she studied and worked for a time in Montreal and London, England, Vancouver was always home. She dragon-boated, she was active in the University Women’s Club and worked for Turning Point Recovery Society. She was happiest when walking at Spanish Banks or spending time at her beloved Bowyer Island family cabin. In the last two years of her life she faced a serious illness with remarkable grace and fortitude, determined to make the most of every day, and to see opportunity in adversity. She will be missed by many whose lives she touched, but most of all by her family who will miss her smile and her parting words on every occasion: “love you lots.” In lieu of flowers, donations to the VGH/UBC Hospital Foundation (Leukemia/Bone Marrow Transplant Program) would be most appreciated. A celebration of life will be held later this spring.
