How much ink should bad ideas get? Eve Edmonds

EEDMONDS@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

“What are we supposed to do with all this pain and all this anger?” It’s a tough question — tough to hear and even tougher to answer. It was the question posed by a family member of one of the 10 people fatally shot in Buffalo last week. By now, I’m sure you’ve heard the news of the 18-year-old man who reportedly drove three hours, seeking out a Black area of town to target a grocery store frequented predominantly by Black people. He did this, according to reports, because he believes in the “white replacement theory,” the idea that white people are being replaced by immigrants and people of colour. It’s an idea some hard right politicians and pundits have espoused as they’ve accused U.S. Democrats of allowing a bunch of “undocumented immigrants”

into the country with the promise to vote for them, thus supplanting the power of white votes. It’s easier to say “undocumented immigrants” than “Black people” or “poor people” but those who hear the dog whistle know what’s meant. Black and poor communities have historically had low voter turnouts. If that changes, the power of the white, wealthy vote is lessened. Granted, this young man was probably not calculating voter demographics when he did what he did — but others were.

A young man’s decision to murder is his alone, but “the people who curate the hate,” as Crump said, played a role in shaping his actions. I agree with Crump, but it raises a question that us in the media have been grappling with, particularly since the pandemic — how much exposure to give views that don’t just make us uncomfortable, but in some instances we find repugnant or possibly dangerous. This is not a new debate. In fact, it’s the essence of John Milton’s pamphlet to the English parliament in 1644. In defence of free speech, Milton makes the argument that sunlight disinfects, that bringing ideas, even really bad ones, into the light of public discourse allows them to be exposed for what they are.

Ben Crump, the lawyer of the family who posed the question about pain and anger, recognized that fact when he called out cable news commentators who stoke white resentment, politicians who capitalize on it and the fringe websites that give it a platform, as reported in the Buffalo News, following a news conference held by Crump and the family.

Even though Milton hadn’t heard about the “dark web,” he warned of the power of falsehoods taking hold and running rampant when kept underground.

“Even though they did not pull the trigger, they did load the gun,” said Crump.

Clearly, the white replacement theory has not just been circulating but gaining

potency in some dark circles, while many of us hadn’t even heard of it. Similarly, who had heard of incel before a man went careening through downtown Toronto in 2020 mowing down as many women as he could find. It turns out incel, which stands for involuntary celibate, is an online network of men who blame women for their own lack of sex and romance. Crump is right, we need to call out those “who curate hate,” but calling out is not necessarily censoring. This isn’t to say anything goes. And I genuinely worry about giving oxygen to ideas that really should wither and die. But the question is not whether certain ideas should be censored, but whether censorship works or backfires. I don’t have the answer, but I’m looking because it’s incumbent on all of us to do what we can to answer a family that so legitimately asks, “What are we supposed to do with all this pain and all this anger?”

Why are walk signals changed? Dear Editor,

For as long as I can remember, due to the high amount of pedestrian traffic, busy city areas generally had pedestrian signals that automatically came on without needing to press a button. For some reason, Richmond is removing these all over the city. I asked the Department of Public Works why, and the reason was ridiculous: “Pedestrian signals as you describe lead to inefficient traffic flow.” Is this the 1960s? Are we still building the Chinatown Freeway? In this day and age, with the whole Vision Zero thing in mind, why is the City of Richmond actively prioritizing motor vehicles in the City Centre?

Perhaps it could be justified if it was in a typical suburb with low pedestrian traffic. But, no. The intersections that they have recently removed include outside SkyTrain stations, a couple near busy secondary schools and recreation centres, and one beside an assisted living home where there are seniors crossing throughout the day. To the readers, if you do not agree with the deprioritization of pedestrian traffic, I implore you to contact the City of Richmond by email at trafsig@richmond. ca or to send snail mail to Traffic Management Centre, 6911 No. 3 Rd., Richmond, B.C. E-scooters a ‘menace’ Dear Editor,

the bike lanes since they are electric and makes no sound at all.

Re: “(Video) E-scooters now available to rent in Richmond,” Online, May 5.

I’ve personally witness one rider hopping on and off the sidewalk, crossing the street in the opposite direction and doing a U-turn on a busy street like Blundell.

I am appalled at the recent decision by the City of Richmond to allow the rental of e-scooters throughout Richmond.

There’s simply no place for these reckless speeders. They are a menace to the road and should be banned or ticketed.

While I think the e-bikes rentals are a good idea, the e-scooters are a different contraption altogether. I see too many of these in the city, mainly riding on sidewalks taking up pesdestrian space. They sometimes may slow down so pedestrians give way to them, or sometimes they hop off the curve and jump on to the road, causing problems on the street for vehicle drivers.

Lime e-scooters are now available for rent in Richmond. File photo

They also speed past unsuspecting manual bikes in

They can go as fast as 25 km/h and there’s even one selling on Facebook which boasts to go 90 km/h! It’s insane the damage they can cause to others or even to the rider himself!

sentence appeal Alan Campbell

ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

A serial rapist from Richmond has lost his appeal against his indefinite prison sentence. Novid Dadmand, now 36, was given the term four years ago when he was found guilty of sexually assaulting five women after posing as a modelling agent. During his trial, the court heard how Dadmand — described by a judge as “predatory and remorseless” — manipulated, intoxicated and/or drugged the women leading up to his crimes, which started in 2012. Two of the victims were unconscious when he had intercourse with them — attacks that he taped on video and recordings of which were subsequently seized by police. Indeed, when Dadmand appealed his convictions and dangerous offender designation last year, it came to light that he had inflicted sexual assaults on four more female victims. Nonetheless, he took his case against his indefinite sentence to the BC Court of Appeal in April of this year, citing “errors” with the judge’s decision. Dadmand’s lawyer claimed that the judge “failed to consider all relevant principles of sentencing” and failed to consider that Dadmand’s risk of “re-offending may reduce with age.” However, the appeal court judges dismissed the appeal, stating that Dadmand’s legal team had not “established errors of law or unreasonable findings of fact.” The original sentencing judge had noted that Dadmand had shown “repeated failures to control his sexual impulses” and that there was a “likelihood of causing injury, pain or other evil, including psychological harm, to other persons through a failure

in the future to control his sexual impulses.”

He added that Dadmand “constitutes a threat to the life, safety, physical or mental well-being of other persons” and that an in- Novid Dadmand determinate jail sentence was the only way to “adequately protect the public.”

The trial six years ago heard how Dadmand was born in Italy and immigrated to Richmond as a child. He graduated high school in 2002 and received a criminology degree at Simon Fraser University in 2010. In the midst of his known crimes, which began in 2012, he was pursuing an education degree. He reported to court he was a poor retail employee, bouncing from job to job. The News understands at one time he lived on No. 2 Road and once worked at the nearby Rogers Video. During his 2016 trial, Dadmand’s counsel claimed several of the victims understood the nature of the sexual activities as being part of the auditions, which included the possibility of pornographic work. They argued that while the accused’s actions may have been immoral, they were not illegal because the victims consented. The trial heard how Dadmand persuaded one of his victims to do an audition and picked her up at the Richmond-Brighouse Canada Line station and drove her to his home, saying his studio was not available. At the home and during the course of an “audition,” he touched her sexually.

Don’t beat up ride-hailing passengers: Councillor There are several illegal ride-hailing services operating in Richmond, like Raccoon Go and UDI-X.

Maria Rantanen MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

A suggestion by Richmond city councillor to ask the province to fine passengers using illegal ride-hailing services didn’t receive much support at the community safety table. Coun. Carol Day put the motion forward at a recent community safety meeting, but other councillors didn’t feel going after passengers was the right tack. Rather, they said there should be better enforcement and more accountability from the airport, where many of these rides are being hailed from. Coun. Bill McNulty said he felt the focus should be on illegal drivers — not passengers — but he also said enforcement of illegal ride-hailing should be “more direct and forceful.” “We’re beating up on the passenger — that’s not the person we need to beat up on,” McNulty said.

Legal ride-hailing services need to get a permit from the Passenger Transportation Board (PTB) and drivers need to follow regulations such as having a Class 4 licence and undergoing a vulnerablepersons criminal record check. The PTB has a list of approved ride-hailing services on its website. Mark Corrado, director of community bylaws and licencing with the city, said fining passengers would require a legislative change at the provincial level.

agree with going after the “victims,” that is, the passengers. Furthermore, he said many of those using illegal ride-hailing services are tourists, international students or other foreigners, and their recourse to fight a ticket would be limited.

We’re beating up on the passenger — that’s not the person we need to beat up on.

Coun. Andy Hobbs said, while illegal ride-hailing is a “serious issue,” he didn’t

“The ability of them to contest (tickets) gets problematic,” Hobbs said. Coun. Alexa Loo pointed out Vancouver International Airport has a “vetting process” for businesses that operate out of the airport. She suggested the city work through its YVR liaison to highlight the issue.

“Ask what they’re doing about people running businesses at YVR without YVR’s permission — I think they need to also look at this,” Loo said, adding the airport needs to en-

Condo buyers lose bid to freeze developer’s profits

missions from any of the 37 buyers for the purpose of the injunction.

Alan Campbell ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Pre-sale buyers at the Alfa tower in the city centre are suing the developer for alleged lost investment.

A group of pre-sale condo owners in Richmond has lost its bid to stop a developer distributing profits from a new 15-storey, city centre tower. A total of 37 former pre-sale owners from the Alfa development on Buswell Street and Anderson Road are suing Anderson Square Holdings after it terminated their contracts in 2019. The buyers — many of whom paid deposits of around $40,000 — claimed they’ve lost out on other investment opportunities and want the developer to recompence them the difference in value between the contract price and “fair market value of the development.” One of them told the Richmond News in 2019 that her deposit in 2015 was for an 800-square-foot condo, which was set to cost around $500,000 at the time.

They all had their deposits returned, plus interest, but in their lawsuit, they allege the developer deliberately stalled on the project to get out of the pre-sale contracts.

In a BC Supreme Court decision published last Friday, Judge Nigel Kent dismissed the buyers’ application citing, amongst other things, a lack of supporting evidence.

The buyers further claimed the termination then allowed the developer to later re-market the units at a new, highly-inflated rate.

The judge, in essence, criticized the submissions from both sides, noting that the affidavits submitted by a husband of one of the buyers and from one of the developers, Sunny Ho, were “impersonal” and full of “lawyer speak,” mainly sewn together with “cuts and pastes.”

They sought an injunction preventing the developer — one of whom is failed Richmond city council candidate Sunny Ho — from distributing any profits when the tower is finally completed.

He also highlighted the fact that there were no actual sub-

“…the Court knows nothing about them, although plaintiffs’ counsel has advised some of them are non-residents in Canada. The Court knows nothing of their intentions or expectations regarding the pre-sale contracts they negotiated,” wrote the judge. He went on to state that none of the plaintiffs “have offered any damages undertaking of a sort” as is usually the case with such an injunction request. Anderson Square Holding had previously claimed it terminated the original pre-sale contracts because it was being sued by its contractor, Scott Construction, for $4.6 million causing an “uncertain business environment.” Anderson also cited, as a reason for ending the contract, the fact the project couldn’t be completed by September 30, 2019, a date agreed in the pre-sale.

sure it’s a safe place.

“We want to make sure the integrity of our airport is maintained,” Loo added. Day said her motion was to simply ask whether it’s possible for the province to look into fining passengers. “My worry is that is that something, a nightmare could happen,” Day said, adding, “I’m worried about things like rape and burglary. We have to do everything we can to protect the public and just putting this forward to the Passenger Transportation Branch at least lets them know what’s happening here in Richmond.” The motion was seconded by Coun. Harold Steves, but it was defeated by the committee. However, the committee did support sending a letter to the province and the PTB to look at penalties and create an education campaign. A further referral, suggested by Loo, to reach out to the YVR liaison was also supported by the committee.

Port prepares land for warehouses Alan Campbell

ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

You may have noticed a lot of activity recently on a large swath of land at the corner of Steveston Highway and No. 6 Road. Well, it’s down to the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, which is in the process of preparing the ground for “potential future development,” to support “growing trade through the Port of Vancouver and regional and national supply chains.” A port spokesperson told the Richmond News that the federal authority anticipates “this parcel will eventually be used in the logistics/warehousing sector or for other trade-enabling purposes. “The port authority is federally mandated to enable trade through the Port of Vancouver.” The port acquired the land — on the northwest corner of the intersection — back in 2015. It had been protected in the province’s Agricultural land Reserve (ALR) since its inception in 1973, before it was pulled from the ALR in 1990, via an application made two years earlier.

Demand for EVs, charging stations soars It’s been busy at the Richmond Auto Mall — at least at certain counters.

places. Currently, there are 51 stations available for public use, and the city plans to increase that to 58 by next year.

With sky-high gas prices, more shoppers are lining up for EVs and fuel-efficient vehicles.

They’ve also been adding chargers for city-owned vehicles as they expand their electric fleet.

Charlee Daniel was one of them. She recently ditched her gas guzzler for a used Tesla from Richmond Auto Mall after waking up to see prices at the pump hit $2.17 per litre. This week, that number jumped to $2.33 in Richmond.

But, along with installing chargers around the city, EV car advocate John Roston thinks the city should require existing strata buildings to install them, saying the lack of home charging options is the “biggest single obstacle” for using EVs.

“I love my electric car — no doubt about it,” said Daniel. Her used 2020 Tesla Model 3 cost her almost $63,000, but Daniel said she’s already recouped the extra cost by saving the $60/week she was spending on gas. Now she spends less than $6.50/week on electricity.

Gas prices hit $2.33 this week in Richmond. Valerie Leung photo 70 used Teslas in its inventory.

The high oil prices are largely being blamed on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“Electric cars are so hot right now. Everyone wants one.”

“Since gas prices are high, people are asking, ‘Why would I pay so much for a gas car when I can switch to electric and save money,” said Gurvir Grewal, a salesperson with Nissan, which, along with its own models of electric cars such as Leaf, has about

But as the entrenched fossil-fuel car culture shifts to a more sustainable model — of hybrids and EVs — the need for more infrastructure to support this change is also growing.

EV chargers needed

The City of Richmond has been installing EV chargers in public

“Richmond has done little to require charging in existing strata buildings,” he said. Furthermore, he doesn’t think the chargers being installed around the city are “the right type.” He pointed out most of the 52 public chargers are level-two chargers that are good for home use — only three are level-three chargers. (The higher the charging level, the faster the charging speed.) “What we really need for public charging stations are level three,” he added. Level-two chargers are the most common and can be installed at home or in public locations. They

can top off most EVs from empty within 4.5 hours.

Interest also grows in used cars

Level-three chargers can recharge most EVs to at least 80 per cent in about half an hour.

It’s not just the electric car market that is booming. Used cars are also in high demand, said Grewal with Nissan.

According to a report going to city council’s public works committee this week, the need for public charging stations is “growing at a faster pace than anticipated.” In fact, usage at public chargers in Richmond went up by 34 per cent in the first three months of 2022. However, the city only plans to increase the number of public charging stations by seven. They will be located at Richmond City Hall, Richmond Animal Shelter and Capstan Park. Meanwhile the city will increase the number of stations for cityowned vehicles by 57 for a total of 81 charging stations. With EV charging demand growing, so is the need for money to support it. A five-year, $1.5 million budget for Foreseeson Technology to maintain the city-owned EV chargers, approved two years ago, apparently isn’t enough to meet growing demand. City council will consider increasing this contract to $3.8 million.

“There are no new cars being produced right now because of the automotive microchip shortage. So, the used car market suddenly got hot,” he explained. The combination of supply chain issues, pent-up demand and low vehicle inventory mean the waiting list is growing longer. Months ago, clients were told it would be a three- to four-month wait to get a new electric car. Now the wait is more like eight to 10 months, said Grewal. Regardless of the wait, the demand for EVs is not waning, according to Stanley Leung with Open Road Toyota. Leung said his company is releasing a new model EV in the coming months, and he already has more than 200 orders for it. “People’s passion for electric cars isn’t going away; it’s only growing.” — Nono Shen, Yuqi Cao, Maria Rantanen/Richmond News

These high fees mean bigger cuts will need to be made in order to reach the federal target of a 50-percent reduction of 2019 median fees. The most expensive monthly fees for child care in Richmond were $1,450 for toddlers and $1,275 for preschool-aged children in 2021, with increas-

Cheers, tears for Palmer’s frisbee team

There were sounds of cheering, yelling and even a few tears when Palmer Secondary’s ultimate frisbee team took first place in a regional tournament last week. The co-ed team competed in the Regional South Fraser Senior AA Division Tournament, which took place at Hugh Boyd Secondary on May 12, beating Surrey Christian Secondary School 8-4 in the final. Team manager Matthew Li said smiles and hugs were going around non-stop. “All the sweat and tears. Everyone was emotional,” said Li. “There was a big sense of achievement that we got a physical award.” Like many school sports, ultimate frisbee was put on hold for the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Members of Pacific Wave also achieved impressive rankings among athletes from all over the country, with Lucy Zhou, Abereena Xu and Chloe Beretta ranking ninth, 20th, 50th respectively out of 212 swimmers for their figures routines. The 13-15 team and the open combo team both ranked 6th in the finals. Senior Seray Sefayi achieved a career high mark with her solo routines, ranking fifth and seventh for her free and technical performances respectively. Zhou and Xu will be representing B.C. as a duet at the Synchro Youth Natation Challenge competition this summer, and they could potentially represent Canada later this year at the Youth World Championships. —Vikki Hui/Richmond News Louisiana Style Jumbo Crispy

Name change reflects society’s goals (DDA) was mainly operating in Vancouver, but did help Richmond families.

Maria Rantanen MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

“We needed help, we needed understanding, we needed lots of different things,” Pattern said, adding “parents can’t do it by themselves” and need to connect with people going through the same issues.

Forty years ago, families were asking that their children with disabilities could live in the community — not in institutions — with proper supports in place. Hence the name “Richmond Society for Community Living” was given in 1989 to an organization originally called “Richmond Society for Special People.” These parents wanted their kids to have a good quality of life and be integrated into society like their peers. But after 40 years, people with developmental disabilities in Richmond are largely integrated into society — many attend regular school, have jobs, recreate and volunteer. So, it was time to change the name of the society again. Its new name is now “Aspire” to reflect what its clients want to do — aspire “to be seen as contributing members of society,” explained Lisa Cowell, manager of com-

Over the years, Marla has been able to access a wide variety of their programs, including employment, — through HandyCrew — volunteer work and leisure activities. (HandyCrew is a social enterprise allowing people with developmental disabilities to gain employment experience.) As Pattern and her husband are aging, they see community support through Aspire as a “safety net” for Marla. “If something happened to me, they would step up,” Pattern said. Aspire Richmond will hold its annual gala on May 26 at the Radisson Hotel, after a hiatus because of COVID-19. This year marks 40 years since the founding of the society, and its theme will be about “coming back together,” Cowell said. friendship and the struggles of fitting in.”

Your first day at high school, peer pressure, being self-conscious, your first crush, your first house party.

“Emma is basically using science to further relationships,” explained Seo, who was born and raised in Steveston. “Emma tells her new friend she is writing this, but she knows nothing about boys so uses her science knowledge to keep her afloat.”

These are all teenage moments engraved into the memory banks of many people and they’re all woven into the children’s book by debut Richmond author Emily Seo.

Seo, who is actually a PhD-trained chemist, said she has always wanted to write a children’s book, but says the main character in The Science of Boys is purely fictional.

The Science of Boys tells the story of an awkward, soon-to-be 13-year-old Steveston girl called Emma Sakamoto, who uses her stellar knowledge of science to make up for her lack of experience in attracting the attention of the opposite sex.

“Obviously it’s a fictional story with fictional characters but there is a lot of truth in there; first day at high school, peer pressure, body image, first crush, first party. Most of us have been there,” added Seo, who also worked in Germany as an associate editor for a peer science journal.

ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Emma is a “science nerd,” Seo said, who seeks to “reinvent herself at the start of high school” and befriends a so-called “popular girl” who Emma realizes wants to date the “most sought-after boy in school.” Emma’s new friend is impressed she’s writing a book called The Science of Boys, where Emma applies science laws and theories to try to figure out the mystery that is young teenage males. The end result, claims Seo, is an “unpredictable” and “heartwarming, but heartbreaking story about the complexities of

Seo said she wanted to incorporate scientific language into a story about life, so children could “get used to such terms later in their education. SOKUGAWA, Roy T. July 3, 1933 − May 9, 2022

Emily Anne Dlugon passed away peacefully on May 5th, 2022, in her 98th year, in Tsawwassen, BC. She was born on December 19th, 1924, to Louis and Carol in Mundare, Alberta. Emily relocated to BC in her twenties, where she lived in Vancouver, Richmond and Delta. She raised three daughters, Judy (Harold), Wendy (Don) and Terrie (Ron), and loved and adored her grandsons Trev and Jeff (Aliez) and great−grandson Oscar. She had many nieces and nephews and kept in touch and shared in their lives throughout the years. Mom was independent, curious, adventurous and strong before it was fashionable for women to be so. She liked to get things done and didn’t suffer fools gladly. She worked hard to instill these traits in her daughters and made it easy by always being there to catch us if we fell. Emily was a talented knitter and a great cook. For a number of years, she catered events at Francis Hall in Richmond, alongside her Mom and sisters, Mary and Flo. When her daughters were old enough to fend for themselves Emily worked in retail, retiring at the age of 70. Emily lived a long and healthy life and was an inspiration to everyone she met − she was one of a kind. We love her now and always. Thanks to the staff at Kin Village for their care and kindness.

PUZZLE ANSWERS ON SEPARATE PAGE

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
