Dave Chauhan
Chief Superintendent Dave Chauhan has been with the RCMP for 31 years, bringing an extensive and diverse operational and administrative policing experience to Richmond detachment. He started his career with the RCMP in 1991 and served 14 years at Prince George detachment where he worked in several sections.
In 2005, he moved with his family to the Lower Mainland to take a posting with BC RCMP’s Major Crime Section where he worked on E Division Serious Crime Unit, Criminal Investigation Unit and Surrey Detachment Major Crime Section.
Q&A
What do you like best about Richmond? Besides the rich and diverse culture of Richmond, I really appreciate the fact how well the RCMP is supported by our citizens. How do you stay healthy in Richmond? I like to work out at the RCMP detachment gym and during my days off, when I bring my son to the Olympic Oval for basketball games, I enjoy long walks along the river. What’s your favourite area of nature in Richmond? I love the scenery and trails at the Iona Beach
In 2017, Chauhan was promoted to inspector as operations support for IHIT and in 2019 he assumed command of IHIT as the Officer-In-charge. In November 2020, he was assigned the role of acting Officer-in-Charge of the Lower Mainland Integrated Teams. Born in India, he recalls Richmond was the first city he set foot in, in Canada, arriving through YVR 40 years ago. He is honoured to serve the citizens of this wonderful city and is committed to working together in collaboration with the City of Richmond and community partners in making Richmond the safest city to live in Canada.
Regional Park. What song best describes Richmond? Michael Buble – Feeling Good. Where in Richmond do you like to take out-of-town guests? My first choice is Steveston village, but I also like to explore authentic cuisine restaurants in other parts of the city as well. What is one of Richmond’s hidden gems? My personal favourite: No. 5. Road — “Highway to Heaven,” a beautiful religious co-existence of so many faith groups.
Chief Supt. Dave Chauhan was recently appointed Officer in Charge of the Richmond RCMP.

watch planes With Vancouver International Airport situated in Richmond, we are the city with the most ideal plane watching spots.
Where
Flight Path Park This outdoor park is in the Sea Island area of Richmond right on Russ Baker Way. This park has a clear view of YVR’s runway. Situated in the middle of the park is a miniature version of an airport runway, paper airplane benches, a half-dome globe, and information on the city’s aviation history. It’s free and open all day.
Whether it be within the city, or a quick drive out closer to the airport, there are plenty of options to catch that plane taking off or landing.
Iona Beach Park/Causeway
Regional
Trail/Terra
Located at the north and west side of YVR airport, this is the one of the best spots to plane watch while enjoying a walk when the sun sets. There is a four-kilometre jetty that stretches out above the water and is considered an easy walk. This plane watching spot is gated and only open between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m.
A great place to take a walk and plane watch is the north end of the West Dyke Trail, which leads into Terra Nova. There are benches for people to sit and take a break while waiting for planes to land or take off from YVR airport, which is across the Fraser River.
This outdoor plane spotting platform is adjacent to the South Terminal building on Cowley Crescent in Richmond. There is free limited parking for those visiting this spot and it is also accessible by public transit. This viewing platform is open 24 hours.

Q&A
What do you like best about Richmond? The people. I’ve been getting to know so many interesting, kind humans from different communities as a part of this residency. The community we’ve been building at Branscombe House continues to get lovelier by the day. How do you stay healthy in Richmond? I love going for runs in Steveston. I tend to take little dance breaks and have shot a few dance and movement videos in the neighbourhood. They are up on the @branscombehouse IG. What’s your favourite area of nature in Richmond? I have still yet to discover this and am open to suggestions!
Dreams.” Since then, she has toured internationally, across North America and has several film/television credits as an actor, dancer, choreographer, director and producer.
A certified yoga, pilates and meditation instructor, Kiran’s “healing arts” practice explores a variety of movement modalities by bridging her Indian heritage and all other aspects of her training and professional experiences.
What song best describes Richmond? A Sufi Qawwali song called “Man Kunto Maula” sung by Abi Sampa, which I recently performed at the Richmond Arts Awards. I feel it represents the diversity of Richmond as I’m experiencing through my residency. Where in Richmond do you like to take out-of-town guests? Nanaksar Gurdwara and International Buddhist Society. They are both stunning structures and sanctuaries of peace. What is one of Richmond’s hidden gems? Branscombe House: it’s a beautiful space, you can feel its history. To be doing wellness and arts practices here is a unique experience. Come visit!

studio, some of whom have gone on to become accomplished musicians of their own. Korytko’s lessons are adapted to an individual’s needs and he feels watching a young student struggle to hold a guitar in the first lesson, to a student that becomes a musician themselves, is a gift.
What do you like best about Ricichmond?
What song best describes Richmond?
The small town feel in a bigger city. The diverse cultures and ethnicity.
“Five feet and rising” by Johnny Cash.
How do you stay healthy in Richmond? I like to walk the dyke trail and visit Richmond Nature Park. The lack of hills makes it easy to cycle and scooter around. There are fantastic bike paths that are newly upgraded which adds to the safety. What’s your favourite area of nature in Richmond? The Dyke Trail is quite lovely with a changing landscape throughout the seasons. Especially in the fall with the migratory birds that gather in the marshlands.
Where in Richmond do you like to take out-of-town guests? Steveston Village offers a wide variety of food choices, especially if you like seafood. You can take your meal to go and eat out on the boardwalk on a sunny or warm evening. What is one of Richmond’s hidden gems? The night market offers fun things to do and I have a soft spot for this place as my band has played the market stage a few times.
Phil Korytko has been teaching music to the people of Steveston for more than 20 years, after touring the country with his band.

Q&A
What do you like best about Richmond? It’s all about the people. I think that once you start coming out to events and networking in Richmond, this city can feel very much like a small town. Everyone is always willing to help each other out, volunteer or share good ideas. How do you stay healthy in Richmond? I’m a runner. Last week I “discovered” the perfect 15-km Richmond running route — a loop over the Canada Line bridge into Richmond, along the pathways on the North arm of the Fraser and then back over the Knight Street Bridge into Vancouver where I live. What’s your favourite area of nature
Outside of the office, Furlong can be found working on embroidery, running along to an audiobook or enjoying nature.
in Richmond? The Shell Road Trail in the summer. Somehow right in the heart of the city, there’s a perfectly serene strip of nature. What song best describes Richmond? This Must Be the Place – The Talking Heads Where in Richmond do you like to take out-of-town guests? The Bruno Restaurant at the Versante Hotel. The food is so good that I dream about it. What is one of Richmond’s hidden gems? Mama’s Dumpling & Coffee tucked away among the offices on Hammersmith Way — I recommend the Xiao Long Bao.
Don’t miss out on the sounds that you love. Check your hearing.

Q&A
What do you like best about Richmond?
What song best describes Richmond?
I like the variety of programs offered at all city recreation facilities and parks.
“A Song About Richmond” by Sandy H. has footage of our city. It’s on YouTube.
How do you stay healthy in Richmond? Exploring all the trails in Richmond keeps me fit. What’s your favourite natural area of Richmond? The flora and fauna at the Richmond Nature Park that change through the seasons. Bog plants bloom in spring and Rufous hummingbirds arrive from the south. When the summer days are hot, the trails are perfect for a cool evening stroll. In autumn, squirrels are busy gathering pine cones. The park sparkles in the snow that begs a winter walk.
Where in Richmond do you like to take out-of-town guests? Terra Nova Rural Park has beautiful scenery where you can view wildlife such as bald eagles and great blue herons. For those with children, we plan a picnic at the Adventure Playground. What is one of Richmond’s hidden gems? Paulik Neighbourhood Park, which has huge trees, beautiful flowers, beehives, public art and a community garden.
Angela Soon absolutely adores all of the wonderful nature that Richmond has to offer, from spring to summer and from fall through winter.

Q&A
Aberdeen Neighbourhood Park This park was built in 2018 and is one of the newest neighbourhood parks in Richmond City Centre. It’s located at the intersection of Hazelbridge Way and Cambie Road and is a great place to walk pets. There’s a fenced dog park as well for owners who want to give their pets some offleash time. McDonald Beach Park This park is located at the north end of Sea Island, along the North Arm of the Fraser River, and is perfect for an afternoon walk or off-leash day for dogs. While dogs must be on-leash in the park, there is an off-leash part of the park for them. As the name suggests, it’s a sandy area along the water so bring a towel to dry off your dog. Iona Beach Regional Park Iona is a great spot for walks for humans and dogs alike. Dogs are allowed off-leash on the lower roadway of the Iona Jetty, but
where residents want to take their dogs out for a day of fun with others. Here is a list of popular spots to walk your dog or off-leash areas for them to run around, go for a swim or make friends.
they must be on-leash on the trail (the fourkilometre jetty) and everywhere else in the park. The two areas dogs aren’t allowed in, because of high value wildlife habitats, are the ponds and areas on the east side of the park and the foreshore and beach area between the Iona Jetty and the North Jetty. Garden City Park While this is a general community park, dogs are allowed on-leash in the area. There is also a designated off-leash enclosed section of the park where dogs can run about. This is a medium-sized area with a double-gate entry for the dogs’ safety and dirt and sand surface. South Dyke Doggie Park This almost seven-acre waterfront park is located on the South Arm area of the Fraser River. It’s an off-leash park with gravel trails, benches and colourful dog sculptures. Poop bags are usually supplied, and there are water fountains for both humans and dogs.
Making friends at McDonald Beach Park is easy to do with sand, water and sticks galore. Photo by Valerie Leung/Richmond News

What do you like best about Richmond?
What song best describes Richmond?
The people. We have one of the highest life expectancies in Canada and yet our people are full of youth and vitality.
My hope is “Imagine” by John Lennon will become Richmond’s song. Its lyrics describe a utopian place where people live together in peace without barriers imposed by religion, possessions or country.
How do you stay healthy in Richmond? There are plenty of parks, dykes and community centres where people can go to walk, run or swim. What’s your favourite area of nature in Richmond? The 55-acre conservation area near River Road and Cambie Road that includes 15 acres which is supposed to be named after the civic-minded former owner’s family patriarch Mr. Sun Hor Lum.
Where in Richmond do you like to take out-of-town guests? Steveston Village is, of course, the best place in Richmond to take out-of-town guests. What is one of Richmond’s hidden gems? The perogies and borscht available at the Ukrainian Community Society of Ivan Franko on Francis Road. The other hidden gem is Minoru Park.

Jim Wishlove
Long-time Steveston resident Jim Wishlove began his career as a volunteer firefighter before being joining Richmond Fire-Rescue in 1990.
With RFR, he served as a firefighter, dispatcher and instructor, and progressed through the ranks and was promoted to Deputy Chief in 2009. After a spell with New Westminster Fire-Rescue, he returned to Richmond in 2018 and was appointed Fire Chief in May 2022. Jim is a recipient of the British Columbia Long

Service Award, which recognizes 25 years in the Fire Service, as well as the Federal Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal. He holds a Chartered Professional Manager designation.
Jim has studied at the Justice Institute of B.C., the Sauder School of Business, SFU and Capilano University. Away from work, Jim enjoys travelling, skiing and is a piper, having played twice on-stage with Sir Paul McCartney in Vancouver.
What do you like best about Richmond?
the open views are brilliant.
I deeply appreciate the rich diversity that Richmond offers: the riverside views, open fields and a busy downtown core with all the amenities of a busy city centre. I’m a bit of a foodie as well, and I enjoy sampling many different types of high quality cuisine all over Richmond — plus it saves me doing dishes at home after.
What song best describes Richmond?
How do you stay healthy in Richmond? I simply try to move every day, whether that’s practicing yoga or walking the dogs along one of our dykes. I appreciate the open access to the outdoors and the fresh air that our island city offers. What’s your favourite area of nature in Richmond? The dykes and Garry Point — the fresh air and
NOW OPEN
Having some Celtic heritage, I’m drawn to the song “Caledonia” — Dougie MacLean does a nice job of it. When I’m away from home it reminds me of Richmond. Where in Richmond do you like to take out-of-town guests? If we’re dining out, there are so many favourites in town that I love — I usually visit them with people I have visiting. What is one of Richmond’s hidden gems? London Farm and the walk along the south dyke are both incredible places to see and experience.
FOR SPRING & SUMMER
Jim Wishlove was appointed Fire Chief of Richmond Fire-Rescue this spring.

Where
Steveston Village The village itself is known for its rich history as well as a popular filming location. From brick walls, to cute cafes and water views, Steveston Village has it all for those photo backdrops. A tip for taking photos here is to head down to the wharf and onto the piers where you can capture a great view of the water without any people or boats blocking the background. The best time is probably at sunrise and sunset. Garry Point Park During cherry blossom season this is the “go-to” spot for photos with tunnels of the pink trees lining the entrance to the park. There is also the Kuno
neighbourhoods and spots for daily and even seasonal photoshoots and we are listing the most popular and easy-to-get-to locations.
Japanese Garden on the south side of the park, closest to the parking lot, with lots of greenery and even a little concrete bridge. The garden celebrates the centennial year of the arrival of the first Japanese immigrant to Canada. This park is west of Steveston Village and is accessible by public transit. Minoru Park While the park is under renovations until spring 2023, it’s known for its ponds and an easy walkway that loops around in a circle. In the centre of the park is a wooden bridge that is great for individual or group photos. The Minoru Chapel is also less than a fiveminute walk away for more photo opportunities.
Minoru Chapel (main photo) and Steveston’s Fisherman’s Wharf are two top spots to get that selfie ratio up.

landscaping and lotus ponds. The temple is open every day from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is on Steveston Highway between No. 3 and No. 4 roads. McArthurGlen If you’ve been near YVR, then you’ve most likely passed by Richmond’s shopping outlet mall. McArthurGlen is like a miniature town for photoshoots with gazebos, a covered walkway with lights, street lamps and art sculptures. This is the place you want to be during Christmas as the entire outlet is decorated with lights with a giant Christmas ornament and tree in the centre of the outlet for those festive photos. Parking is free, but the gates close late in the evening.

Sharon MacGougan
Sharon MacGougan is a retired band teacher with the Richmond School District and lifelong Richmond resident. She is currently the president of the Garden City Conservation Society, director of Tir-na-nOg Theatre School and Casa Meshiko Cultural Society; White Crane kung fu instructor, member of the
International Council of Dance (UNESCO) and teacher of Aztec dance.
Sharon has a deep love of the natural world and is committed to the idea of “good measure,” something she learned from her father at a young age. Always give back a little bit more!
Q&A What do you like best about Richmond?
The natural parks in Richmond that factor in the needs of wildlife and support our bird populations. How do you stay healthy in Richmond?
Walking the dog, kung fu training and Aztec dance for exercise. Spending time in my backyard forest for my spirit. And eating vegetables grown by our local organic farmers! What’s your favourite area of nature in Richmond?
The Garden City Lands, mainly with the realization of how saving carbon sequestering peat is important for all of our futures. And Paulik Park, a forest exists there because a neighbour cared enough to
plant trees. What song best describes Richmond?
Birdsong is the first thing that comes to mind. As I hear them sing, I feel happy and want to ensure that they are always with us. I’m proud that Richmond is an internationally significant area for birds. May their songs always surround us! Where in Richmond do you like to take out-of-town guests?
Steveston, because it reminds me of how Richmond used to be. What is one of Richmond’s hidden gems?
The wonderful people, especially the volunteers, that give back to our community in a way that makes Richmond stronger.
Sharon MacGougan has a deep love of nature and volunteers to save birds and the natural habitat.
