ing order against him. All this went public, meaning she didn’t have to name him. It was clear who she was talking about.

If ever we need an example of why cameras should not be in courtrooms, the trial launched by Johnny Depp against his exwife Amber Heard provides it.

Depp denies abusing Heard and claims the article damaged his reputation so is suing her for $50 million. She’s counter suing for $100 million, saying that calling her a liar damages her reputation.

EEDMONDS@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Talk about a circus. In fact, it’s so bizarre it’s easy to forget at the centre are two human beings involved in a toxic relationship with its share of violence and abuse — a depressingly common scenario. For background: Depp (aka Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies) is taking Heard to court because of an op ed she wrote for the Washington Post in 2018 where she describes herself as a victim of domestic violence. While she doesn’t mention Depp by name, two years earlier she had gone to police, claiming to be a victim of abuse at the hands of Depp. Weeks prior, she had asked for a restrain-

If you asked Bass if he thought a woman being smashed in the face is funny, he’d probably say no. (Although this guy has some clear judgment issues.) Regardless, he thought he could get away with it because he thinks Heard is lying.

rageous and hateful the post, the more the clicks, shares and re-shares, which, in turn, increases the value of their brand.

The problem is he hasn’t a clue, nor do any of us.

Granted, the jurors, who are now in deliberation, should not be exposed to any of this. But young women aged 16-24 — the cohort most likely to be victims of sexual and domestic violence — certainly are.

As tragic as all this is, it’s not particularly remarkable. Domestic abuse happens, defamation suits happen. What is remarkable is the massive social media industry that has sprung up around it.

This is not the first time the public has picked sides in a celebrity trial based on snippets and stereotypes. But social media is turbo charging the phenomena. Why? Because it’s massively lucrative.

Because there are cameras and microphones in the courtroom, bits and pieces of the trial can be extracted, manipulated and massaged for any purpose. And that’s exactly what’s happening — often in the most sickening fashion.

Influencers and content creators are watching the trial as it’s live streamed on YouTube, grabbing the most salacious details, amplifying them to the extreme and sending them out.

Case in point, Lance Bass, the NSYNC singer, made a mocking TikTok reenacting Heard’s testimony as she describes allegedly being hit so hard all she remembers is opening her eyes and realizing she was on the carpet.

These people are not lawyers with expertise in defamation, they’re not journalists trained in trauma-informed reporting, they are not experts in domestic violence. Rather, they’re people with expertise in knowing how to generate clicks, shares and re-shares. They know that the more out-

They also know that Depp has a die-hard social media fan base that further amplifies their message and misogyny travels fast.

After watching the vitriol leveled against Heard, what young woman is going to raise her hand and say “me too.” This trial exposes a myriad of social failings for which there are no easy answers, but one simple fix could be ditching the cameras, particularly in cases involving sexual and domestic violence. The question we need to be asking ourselves is not whose side are you on, Depp vs. Heard, but what do we value more — a lucrative influencer industry or a justice system that encourages victims of violence to come forward?

Stranger in my own land Dear Editor, Re: “Who are we building these homes for?” News, May 3. I know exactly how my friend Kerry Starchuck feels, as I look around the city, and feel a stranger in my own land. There is development everywhere you look, townhouses almost instantly replace single-family homes, and highrises replace larger buildings in the downtown core. It’s no wonder the airport is screaming about the amount of development around their runways. Local governments can smell and see the commercial and residential tax dollars that they can retrieve from those properties and so allow the permits to become reality. I feel sorry for the city in one development, as they will lose their beautiful view of the North Shore mountains when the highrises arise from the demolition of the old Sears parkade and store. Another downtown core development has financially stalled, leaving a huge black hole in the downtown landscape. Welcome to the darkside.

I live in Steveston, and have campaigned against development, as I feel it would severely damage the quintessential atmosphere that the community has had since its founding. My little corner of the world is still somewhat intact, and we can still enjoy our hood the way as Richmond used to be. My old family homes, built on the same street, in 1945 and 1959, are now long gone, replaced by monster homes, and the “Veterans’ Land Act subdivision,” that they were a part of, is now a memory to only those who lived there. Today’s Richmond remains a shadow of its former self, but the word “Rich” continues to stand out in regard to the profits being made from its extreme densification and foreign investment. The city now even has a cubical hotel, called the “Panda Pod,” and I hope that this idea does not spread to other forms of development. Perhaps we should be not known as “Island city by nature,” but rather, “Island city by developers,” and change the crane.

Two-pronged attack needed for housing Dear Editor, I don’t have to tell you, my friends, that we are experiencing a dire housing shortage in Richmond. The good news is that our elected officials and developers are making a concerted effort to build more housing; the bad news is it’s the wrong kind. The new housing projects underway will not help our young adults and middle-income workers fleeing our community searching for affordable housing and will only benefit the privileged elite. Is anyone surprised? Rather than investing in reasonably priced housing that everyday folks can afford, we are witnessing the construction of luxury townhouses and highpriced condominiums, some of which result in the destruction of single-family dwellings to obtain the land.

for Richmond’s 200K population — 26 per cent of whom are renters in a region with a <1 per cent vacancy rate. We desperately need a two-pronged approach to fix this systemic issue. Our young adults are forced to relocate, leaving behind their entire community and support system, making families more vulnerable. Prong one is to re-design single-family homes to create two or three smaller homes on the same plot that our muchvalued teachers, tradespersons, healthcare and childcare workers, and young professionals can afford. Prong two involves city council fundamentally changing zoning laws to create more purpose-built rental housing that families and middle-income residents, who make less than $70,000 annually, can afford.

The negligible amount of affordable housing under construction is inadequate

Garden club Police tunnel traffic Hospital tower ‘crumbling’ turns 65 Dear Editor,

If we have to live with our existing tunnel for another eight to 10 years, we need much better policing during rush hour. There are way too many jerks who think their time is more important than those patiently waiting in line.

Southbound, many people going east on Steveston stay in the left lane and cut into the tunnel line very late, blocking through traffic while they barge in.

pancy vehicles also drive all the way to the HOV lane and enter there.

Northbound through the tunnel many single-occupancy vehicles use the HOV lane daily and many more stay in the lineup until they see no police presence and then dart into the HOV lane. We need daily police coverage of these problems before we start having serious road rage incidents.

Southbound traffic on No. 5 Road often comes through the Steveston intersection and turns into the businesses in the southeast corner, cutting into the lineup northbound on No. 5 Road.

If we don’t want to assign a constable to these issues, hire an auxiliary or other people to police these.

Dear Editor: My 92-year-old father just got out of Richmond Hospital after 47 days in emergency, remote monitoring and acute care. I was appalled at the condition of the tower. It appears to be falling apart from the elevator core outwards.

My question is, how can you justify building an $800 million museum, a vanity tag, over replacing a crumbling hospital tower?

Chinese restaurant chain wins court battle against resident not stop using the trademarks within one week.

Alan Campbell

ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

A Richmond man copied a well-known Chinese restaurant chain’s branding — then tried to extort $1.5 million from them by offering the same brand for sale. Wei Meng applied to register in Canada, in 2017, the exact same trademark branding used by the Beijing Judian Restaurant Company — known locally as The Meat Up — a barbecue bar chain which has around 40 outlets in China and three in Canada in Vancouver, Richmond and Toronto. In 2019, two years after applying to register the trademark — which consists mainly of Chinese “Ju Dian” characters — Meng turned up at The Meat Up’s Vancouver restaurant on Granville Street “demanding to speak to the owner,” according to court documents. However, as the owner was not around, Meng allegedly told an employee that the restaurant had stolen his trademark in Canada. A meeting was then arranged a week later at the restaurant with one of the man-

agers, Lai Lam Sing, at which court documents state that Meng demanded $1.5 million for Beijing Judian to acquire use of the trademarks. His request for payment was refused. Another week later Meng sent a letter to the founders of the chain, alleging that Beijing Judian’s restaurants used his trademarks without his permission and infringed his copyright in Canada. In that letter, Meng stated that he would contact the “registry department” and the Canadian Revenue Agency if the chain did

A month later, the owners of the restaurant chain noticed an ad on the local Chineselanguage website VanSky, offering the sale of the registration of the same trademarks. A third party known to the restaurant owners contacted the seller — who, according to court documents, turned out to be Meng — who was asking for $100,000 a year for the trademark so the buyer could open up a franchise with the Ju Dian characters.

ilar tactic when applying to register in Canada the trademarks of other well-known Chinese restaurants, “with the same intention” and for supposed “proposed use.” Meng did not submit any evidence to the court, nor did he appear for the recent video court hearing. “The evidence indicates that (Meng) registered the (trademarks) with the intention of extorting money from (Beijing Judian) or using (their) reputation…to obtain money from others,” stated the judge.

Last year, the restaurant chain filed an application in a Toronto court, requesting that Meng’s 2019 trademark be declared invalid, given that it was “registered in bad faith” and that he had no intention of using it for business purposes, other than to “extort” money from Beijing Judian.

“The evidence demonstrates that (Meng) registered the (trademark) without a legitimate commercial purpose.

In a judgment released last week, Judge Angela Furlanetto granted the restaurant chain’s application, adding that she agreed with them in their assertion that “it is implausible to contemplate that (Meng) could have created this same original design on his own.”

However, the judge denied the chain’s application for damages for “confusion or the likelihood of confusion in the marketplace” caused by Meng’s actions, saying there was “insufficient evidence.”

The judge also noted evidence from the restaurant chain that Meng had used a sim-

She did rule that the chain was entitled to court costs, which will be determined at a later date.

Man mulls legal action over $30,000 tax bill Alan Campbell

ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

A Richmond resident is now considering legal action after B.C.’s Ombudsperson office sided with the government in his fight over a $30,000 speculation and vacancy tax demand. Tony Chan first got hit with a bill in 2019, something that he’s adamant he should not be paying or can ill afford. And, after getting stonewalled by the province, sought help from the Office of the Ombudsperson (OOTO). The Richmond News reported last year how semi-retired Chan, 65, has lived in his Terra Nova home for the past two decades, but got hammered under the relatively new rules because his wife, whom he married in 2005, lives and works in the U.S., earning more than he does. Chan, who stated previously that he was “being fined for being married to an American,” is angry that the OOTO “focused on process rather than principle, which doesn’t help me at all.” “This is all too surreal. In any event, formal legal action is the next recourse. “To be assessed an annual hefty fine for a circumstance that predates the tax

policy is as ridiculous as anything this government has ever implemented and is an affront to all British Columbians.”

issues on an individual basis. However, the OOTO contacted Chan this week to inform him that, unless, he provides further information, they will likely close the file.

Chan believes he’s not alone Chan said that, while doing his research for his complaint to the OOTO, he has come across many people in a similar position, mainly elderly, who will be “devastated financially by this program to create ‘affordable housing’. It’s tragic.”

He was told that the “The Minister appears to have considered the application of these provisions to people in situations similar to your own. The legislative provisions that are designed to address these situations are the tax credit regime…Those provisions appear to be designed to reduce, but not necessarily eliminate, the tax burden of some satellite families.

His Terra Nova home is his only property, which he bought in 2000 and where he raised both his children. The house is in his name, not his wife’s, and the two don’t have shared accounts. Chan said previously that he hasn’t “moved anywhere,” his home has never been rented and has never been vacant for more than a few months a year when he visits his wife in the U.S. Main breadwinner outside of Canada Under the tax, Chan is defined as an untaxed worldwide earner — or a member of a satellite family — because most of the household income is earned outside of Canada. The government told Chan that a nonrefundable tax credit may be available to certain owners, including members of

Ombudsperson says matter is for politicians Tony Chan is still facing the $30,000 speculation and vacancy tax bill for his home in Terra Nova. a satellite family, based on their reported B.C. income and whether they used the property for an “eligible use,” such as a principal residence. He said he believes it should be easy to make an exemption for people like himself, pointing out there isn’t currently a mechanism in place to address these

The OOTO continued that the legislation (tax) was “publicly debated at length in the house, before being passed in its current form. These provisions are the result of democratically enacted legislation and the societal and policy context is revealed by a review of the legislative debates.” The OOTO went on to tell Chan that “Concerns about legislation are more appropriately raised with politicians or interest groups, who subsequently attempt to exert some influence on the political process. That is not the role of this Office.”

Court briefs: Four accused of running drug labs

Four out of six people accused of operating Richmond drug labs were in court last week facing charges of production of controlled substances, possession for the purpose of trafficking and having restricted firearms and drug-making equipment. Huang-Wei Hsu faces multiple charges dating to March 2020 and October 2020 at three different addresses. In March 2020, Huang-Wei Hsu is alleged to have been producing methamphetamine and in possession of a Glock semi-automatic handgun, a stun gun and a cartridge magazine without licences at 807-6951 Elmbridge Way.

He’s also accused of alleged crimes in October 2020 at 5406 Maple Rd. Those include possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a .22-calibre Ruger semi-automatic rifle without a licence as well as ammunition, and having a weapon with an altered or defaced serial number. Huang-Wei Hsu is co-accused with Chanel Hsu for producing methamphetamine and possessing ephedrine and other chemicals to make meth at the Maple Road address. Liu Yuan Song and Zekun Cao, along with HuangWei Hsu, face charges of possessing chemicals and equipment meant for drug production at 4171 Blundell Rd. All four have a pre-trial conference set for June 20. Police reported after the sting resulting in the charges in October 2020, they found drugs, chemical for drugs, several vehicles, watches, gold and silver and other items. Many of the items, including the vehicles, were subject of a civil forfeiture case. Also accused in conjunction with the raids is Kim World Huang who will be in court on Nov. 1 and 2 for a preliminary investigation.

He also allegedly told a police officer that he would cause death or bodily harm to the homeowner. Dauz faces 10 charges that include arson, possession of incendiary material, an incendiary device or explosive substance, and mischief endangering life. He appeared before the Richmond Provincial Court Friday via video conference, but the session was adjourned so his counsel could get instructions from him. Dauz is scheduled to appear again before the court this Friday. —Vikki Hui/Richmond News Sexual assault defendent fails to show up for court appearance A man charged with four counts of sexual assault failed to make his first appearance in Richmond Provincial Court Thursday. Tony Hirmuz, 22, allegedly sexually assaulted A.B. on four separate occasions at or near Richmond, according to court documents. He also allegedly unlawfully observed or recorded A.B. in a place where they would have reasonably been expected to be nude or engaged in sexual activity between December 2021 and January.

Yung En Yang is also named in the charges in conjunction with Huang.

A suspected arsonist appeared before Richmond Provincial Court for allegedly targeting the same Richmond home twice in two days. Maximino Dauz had allegedly set fire to a garage door of a home in the South Arm neighbourhood on March 29. The homeowner was able to extinguish the fire, according to police. Dauz then allegedly returned to the home the next day and threw a “Molotov cocktail” inside, which the police said failed to ignite. Richmond Mounties reviewed video surveillance and subsequently arrested and held Dauz in custody, after spotting who they believed to be the individual committing the alleged offences.

5-2 vote spares school support from cuts the Richmond School District were spared from the chopping block.

Maria Rantanen MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

The tension was palpable at a recent school board meeting with a full audience and other people in a spillover room and online over Zoom watching as trustees debated how to balance their budget and make up for a $3.9 million shortfall. In the end, trustees voted 5-2 to draw about $470,000 more than originally planned from its unrestricted reserve fund, its accumulated surplus. This allowed the school district to avoid laying off some CUPE workers, although it went against the recommendation of senior staff. Some Richmond support workers sighed a sigh of relief at last Wednesday’s meeting after the board of education’s decision. Career advisors, half of the library technicians and one educational assistant in

But several trustees, although voting to save the jobs, warned the school district might be in the same situation next year, citing chronic underfunding of education. The operating funds to pay teachers and other staff and the capital funding to maintain school facilities are set by the provincial ministry of education.

Donna Sargent

However, the school district has a legal obligation to balance its budget, something Trustee Ken Hamaguchi pointed out causes strife when local jobs are on the line. He said trying to balance the budget with too little money — whereby jobs need to be cut — results in people “lashing out at the people in the same lifeboat.”

Trustees Donna Sargent and Norm Goldstein voted against drawing more money from the reserves to save the CUPE jobs.

union members questioned whether trustees knew what these workers did, and also, in a press release, criticized increases in trustee and management salaries.

Sargent said money in the school district’s surplus fund isn’t a “rainy-day fund,” and the solution isn’t to draw more out.

And, indeed, based on the annual Statement of Financial Information (SOFI) report, trustee total compensation went up 5.43 per cent from 2020 to 2021.

She pointed out the school district has a three-year plan to get out of its structural deficit.

However, the school district explained trustees received an extra pay period in 2021, because it was a “payroll leap year” based on bi-weekly payments. This extra amount was $1,050, but without this extra pay, trustees’ annual increase was 1.6 per cent, according to the school district.

“We can’t use surplus and solve the problem — this will continue… next year and the year after and the year after,” Sargent said. “And it doesn’t just go away when we make some saves, when we make some quick changes.” CUPE loc. 716, which represents the support staff that were under threat of being laid off, had pointed criticism of trustees as they deliberated the budget. CUPE president Ian Hillman and other

“Employers will periodically have an extra pay period for employees paid on a bi-weekly basis known as pay period leap years,” school district staff explained. Furthermore, district superintendent Scott Robinson’s salary was $70,000 higher in 2021 due to him getting a monetary payout for not taking vacation time during the pandemic.

Dozens of airport screening officers gathered outside Vancouver International Airport Monday, calling for better pay and less stressful working conditions. Screening officers at the rally, located below the SkyTrain overpass, were chanting slogans such as “Low pay, not okay” and “Screening officers work hard for your safety but are underpaid.”

screening officers currently employed are working long hours to meet the increased passenger volume, Flowers explained.

Screeners at YVR are employed by a third-party contractor, Allied Universal, which in turn is employed by the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA), the agency responsible for passenger and luggage screening at YVR and other airports.

“For the travelling public, we know this is frustrating, but it’s not our members who are causing this issue. Please treat screening officers with respect because they are trying to get everyone through as fast and as safely as possible,” said Flowers.

CATSA laid off numerous security officers during the pandemic and are now dealing with a labour shortage. This means the

He added that reports indicated CATSA plans to hire around 1,000 screening officers this year but it’s not just about hiring more people. The focus should be on retaining workers with more attractive working conditions. Bunnies result from ‘oops litters,’ online sales

“We started doing this at UVic in 2010, and it was just ridiculous the paperwork we had to go through to get the permit,” Saidman said.

Vikki Hui VHUI@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

B.C.’s Invasive Species Action Month may be drawing to a close, but there appears no end in sight to our most adorable dilemma — the Richmond rabbits.

Abandoned bunnies found throughout Richmond could be because of online breeders and “oops litters.”

The bun-invasion is a long-standing problem, and a deeper dive down the rabbit hole has revealed that online sellers on sites such as Kijiji and Craigslist might be part of the problem. Rabbitats picked up Coburn, a brown lopeared rabbit, on a rainy day in March. An online post indicated that another Coburnlookalike was picked up the day before. Over the next two days, four others with a striking resemblance were found in the same area in Minoru Park. “There have been a lot of ‘breed’ bunnies (like lops and lionheads) being abandoned recently and they’re probably either accidental litters or intentional from backyard breeders,” said Sorelle Saidman, founder of Rabbitats. “Oops litters,” as Saidman calls them, are very common. Rabbits are often mis-sexed, and when they are raised together, “oops litters” happen. “Rabbits, they have a way of getting together,” she said.

Rabbitats photo

The city imposed a ban on pet shop sales of rabbits in 2010, but there is nothing stopping people from selling them online. These online sites allow some people to find new homes for “oops litters” and other rabbits for a small adoption fee, but others have more sinister motivations. The rise in demand for pets during the pandemic could have contributed to the increase in “oops litters.” “I think during COVID as well, they realized that they could have an ‘oops litter’ and sell them for 20 bucks, 40 bucks,” said Saidman. Meanwhile, there are breeders who breed and sell unspayed/ unneutered babies regularly on Kijiji and Craigslist

to make a quick buck. Unsold babies that grow up and are harder to sell are dumped in the wild, Saidman said. Provincial hurdle to bunny issue The online seller boom happened when the pet store ban came into place, and it soon became the main source of pet rabbits in Richmond, Saidman told a parks, recreation and cultural services committee meeting earlier this year. Further restrictions to sellers and breeders are necessary, said Saidman, but there is also a provincial hurdle. Under the Wildlife Act, all rabbits are considered wildlife, meaning they can’t be picked up and rehomed without a permit.

Although the law has since changed to remove the requirement for sanctuaries, a permit is still needed to put rabbits up for adoption. Overwhelmed rescues Coburn’s situation is not unique. In fact, Rabbitats has seen a drastic increase in abandoned pet rabbits over the last few months. According to a survey they conducted, the main reasons people surrender their rabbits include: “oops litters,” allergies, the lack of time and resources to take care of them and pet restrictions in buildings. There can be long wait lists at SPCA shelters for rabbits and rescues are full, Saidman said. As the local rabbit saga continues, the Richmond-based rescue is desperately in need of an extra pair of hands, Saidman said, adding the labour shortage is a big problem. City spokesperson Clay Adams said the city encourages Richmond residents to adopt and rehome rabbits from the BC SPCA, rather than buying them online. Second supportive building set to open in July Valerie Leung

VLEUNG@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Residents of Richmond’s second temporary modular housing (TMH) building are expected to move in early July, a few months after originally planned. Tenants for the supportive housing building will be selected by a committee — a group who will identify people in need in the community — and from the BC Housing’s supportive housing registry. The TMH was originally supposed to

open this spring, but there have been some “slight delays” in the construction, which BC Housing said was because of building permit coordination.

According to the 2020 Homeless Count in Richmond, 85 people are homeless, a 21-per-cent increase since 2017. “This site will provide much-needed safe and supportive homes for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness in Richmond,” said BC Housing. The new three-storey modular structure will have 40 self-contained units — each with a private kitchenette and washroom — at

The first TMH opened three years ago on Alderbridge Way and is operated by RainCity. It faced fierce opposition from the neighbourhood during the planning stages. This second TMH hasn’t had any notable opposition. The non-profit Community Builders will operate the new TMH with staff onsite 24/7. The residents will also have access to health and mental-health workers. They will also get daily meals, life skills training and employment assistance.

This supportive housing building will replace Richmond’s temporary Emergency Response Centre, located at the former Minoru Place Activity Centre. The new TMH will be in place for about three years until a permanent option arises. The provincial government, through BC Housing, is providing $8.6 million for the project and an annual operating subsidy of about $1.4 million. Meanwhile, the City of Richmond is giving a $250,000 grant and city-owned land for the building. —with files from Maria Rantanen

Sphagnum ‘is the coolest moss’: Instructor millennia, is released back into the atmosphere. So a peat bog can become a massive source of greenhouse gas emissions if it’s allowed to dry,” Bomford added.

A group of community members met at Garden City Lands last weekend for an important mission — transplanting sphagnum moss. “We’re moving peat, live sphagnum, from one area, rescuing it, and moving it to another area so that it can actually carry on living prior to the continuation of expanding the agricultural land here on the Garden City Lands,” said Kathy Dunster, the faculty lead on the urban ecosystems program at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Sphagnum is peat, Dunster added, but it’s the part that’s alive, while peat is the non-living stuff underneath that grows up in layers. Dunster and her colleague Christine Thuring are wetlands-enthusiasts who came to support their friends in sustainable agriculture. Thuringis a horticulture instructor at KPU, and she is especially interested in the star of the event. “[Sphagnum] is the coolest moss,” she said. But what makes it so cool?

On the other hand, if the peat stays dry and sphagnum continues to grow on it, it will pull more carbon out of the atmosphere. “And so this environment can either help us from a global warming perspective, or it can make things worse, depending on how we treat the peat,” said Bomford. riculture program and has been instrumental in conserving the Garden City Lands. Richmond is an island created over thousands of years from many layers of sphagnum, meaning there is a lot of peat. “[Thick peat deposits] represents a tremendous carbon store. All of this carbon dioxide that’s been pulled out of the atmosphere by this sphagnum over the millennia has not been released back because the sphagnum didn’t decompose,” said Bomford.

Peat stores carbon One reason these community members gathered to save the sphagnum moss is because the peat stores carbon. Sphagnum moss tends to hold onto water because it likes wet environments, which helps keep the peat from decaying, according to Michael Bomford, who spearheaded the project.

“There are all sorts of different species

If the environment changes and the peat dries out, bacteria and fungi would be able to get in and the peat would decompose.

Community members are also transplanting the moss for the sake of protecting the bog in the Garden City Lands. “We’re really lucky to have a bog in the centre of Richmond, and this is a 5,000-year-old bog, and it has a shining legacy for our future generations,” said Sharon MacGougan, president of the Garden City Conservation Society. The moss transplant is a community conservation effort, and MacGougan hopes to see a vibrant bog restoration project take place in Richmond so future generations can experience nature and be close to it as they grow up.

Students fete 100 years at Byng

Japan and Canada were at war. As Sipsas explained to her students, one day many Byng students were just gone.

Maria Rantanen MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Students in Helen Sipsas’ class were preparing for Byng elementary’s 100-year anniversary of the naming of their school. Maria Rantanen photo

It’s been a hundred years since Byng elementary was named after Field Marshall Julian Hedworth George Byng, a Canadian hero of the First World War and later Governor-General of Canada. The school just celebrated this milestone, but the current Byng elementary school wasn’t the first school — or first name for the school — on this site. While much of the celebrations include material things — pins, coloured glasses, photos and mementos — creating a sense of belonging to the school and its history is also a big part of the celebration. Helen Sipsas, who has taught at the school for more than three decades, has been thinking about the 100-year anniversary for months, hoping to inspire her students to feel connected to the history of the school, especially after two years of COVID-19 restrictions that have disrupted so many normal activities. “Learning about our history gives us a sense of our connection to place,” Sipsas said. “(It’s) where we interact to learn, we create memories, we reflect on history, we connect with culture and then we can establish identity.”

Given the effects of the pandemic on daily life at school, Sipsas feels it’s especially important to make the students feel like they belong to the school community. “COVID has taken a real hit for all of us — we’re doing things for the first time in a long time, sports day, track meet, and we’ve lost a little bit of that,” she said. In 1897, the first one-room school was built on the site — Steveston elementary was established, later expanding to two rooms. In 1922, as the “Great War” was fresh in the minds of Canadians and Richmondites, the school was named after Lord Byng, a commander in the Canadian army from 1915 to 1917 who led the Canadian army to victory at the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

In 1930, as the Steveston community was growing, a 14-room school was built to replace the two-room school. But a fire damaged parts of the school in 1946. It was rebuilt in 1948, but continued to need more space, and in 1959, the school was further expanded. This school would endure for another 35 years, until the current school was built in 1995. Sipsas has been part of the 100-year planning committee. Leading up to the centennial, she’s been talking with her Grade 1 and 2 students about the school’s history. In 1942, the Byng school population was decimated as all local Japanese families — as well as thousands from across B.C. — were ordered into internment camps as

These are the “difficult” parts of history, Sipsas told the Richmond News, but she’s impressed by how her young students can handle difficult issues. While the school is named after a man, Sipsas also wanted her students to learn about two women of Japanese descent who were part of the school’s history. Hide Hyodo is perhaps the best known, a teacher brought in to teach Japanese students. She was eventually interned as well. Another staff member of Japanese descent was June Chiba, who was principal of Byng elementary. Since her death in 1991, the school has been giving out the June Chiba Humanitarian Award to one or two graduating students. For Sipsas, the deep roots of the school in Steveston are represented by three trees saved from the school’s early days — two big fir trees and an oak tree, planted in 1907 on Arbor Days. “Maybe things changed around us… but some things have remained the same and those are the roots,” Sipsas said. “The roots (are) down deep. The trees are there. We are here.” Search Byng 100 years for full story at Richmond-News.com

With summer around the corner, we will be spending more time outdoors; it also means more exposure to insect bites and stings. Most bug bites are harmless, but some can spread dangerous diseases like Zika, dengue, Lyme disease, or malaria. Pay attention to outbreaks, travel warnings and recommendations when traveling to areas known to have insect-borne diseases. To protect yourself from bites, consider the following: • Avoid stagnant water (e.g. Swamps, birdbath) • Wear light-coloured, loose clothes made of tightly woven materials such as nylons or polyester • Wear long pants, sleeved shirt, along with closed-toe shoes or boots and a hat • Apply appropriate insect repellants such as DEET on exposed skin and clothing Most bug bites and stings can be safely treated at home. Take an over-the-counter analgesic such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain. For itchy bites, apply an ice pack or anti-itch cream such as hydrocortisone or take an oral antihistamine for severe itching. If you experience any serious symptoms such as rash, fever, or body aches, seek medical attention as soon as possible.

ASK A PROFESSIONAL a golfer should I see Q: aAschiropractor? A:

What you may not realize is the role chiropractors can play in improving your swing by enhancing your musculoskeletal mechanics involved in your swing. Chiropractors are ideally suited to minimize spinal stress arising from the golf swing by managing spinal subluxations or misalignments in the spine, which place pressure on the delicate spinal nerves as they exit the spinal column. The golf swing by nature, places significant rotary torques on the back and requires the shoulders to move at high speeds through a wide and unusual range of motion. You can overload the spine in this torsion movement, damaging the spinal joints, the ligaments, neutral elements and even the discs. Chiropractors can ensure your spine is functioning at its optimum and minimize spinal stress to maximize your golf performance and create a healthy swing. So if you feel your golf swing is a little disconnected, or you’re seeing a few too many books and slices in your game, call Richmond Family Chiropractic for a thorough evaluation.

With summer just around the corner, now is the time to prepare. The following are a few suggestions: 1. Insure your boats/ watercrafts before you take them on the water and always have personal floatation devices on board for all passengers. 2. If you’re traveling outside of B.C, purchase a travel insurance policy, which can include trip cancellation, baggage and Covid-19. 3. when COVID-19 restrictions began to ease, it leaves only a small window to solicit the vital corporate dollars. “We would normally have all this wrapped up, so we are behind the eight ball on the sponsorship front,” Wilson admitted on Tuesday. “There was always a level of repetition, in so much as reaching out to sponsors and saying ‘hey, are we on for the same as last time?’…that kind of thing.

“We don’t have that continuity this year; businesses have changed or even gone away. And even the ones that are there, they might not be able financially to get involved. “So we’re having to start some of this from scratch with attracting sponsors to the website or to the program. And then we’re having to go back to square one with describing who we are and what we do; you’re having to sell it from the very beginning.”

Wilson said the tournament is in the market for opportunities as lofty as title sponsors, all the way to taking out a small ad in the event program, along with placing a promotional tent at the festival’s headquarters at Hugh Boyd. “We are happy to figure out what works best for any potential sponsor, it doesn’t have to be a set amount for a set thing,”

added Wilson.

“There is a chance we may have to cut some corners. But that’s more to do with the supply chain. “Some of them are saying we might not even be able to get you a ball in time. We’re having to really work hard to find the basic supplies we need to put the tournament on.” Thousands of top male and female amateur soccer players of all ages from across B.C. and western Canada converge on Hugh Boyd and surrounding fields for the Nations Cup to play for the countries of their heritage. The draw for the 41st Nations Cup is taking place this week. Anyone interesting sponsoring at the event or volunteering, should email info@ thenationscup.com.

Ocean and Spring Ma.

Richmond’s squash-playing twin stars, Ocean and Spring Ma, are unlikely to face each other at the adult Canadian Squash Championships this week. However, the unseeded 15-year-old Burnett secondary students — who will be competing in the adult open category for the first time — have other challenges to overcome. The pair will be going head-to-head with adults in competition for the first time and they will be playing in an allglass court in the middle of Jack Poole Plaza in Vancouver, when the five-day championships kick off on Wednesday. The two are likely to take it all in their stride, though, after Ocean won the junior nationals earlier this month, beating Spring in the semifinals, en route to

the gold medal. “It does take a bit of getting used to. It’s definitely a lot different,” said Spring, referring to the all-glass court, which she played in during the junior nationals. “I’m very nervous actually. Playing against the adults in the open (category). But I’m also looking forward to it as well.” The Canadian Squash Championships go June 1 to 5 at the Vancouver Convention Centre. For the full schedule, go to Squash.ca/canadian-championships.

A Grade 5 student from Richmond bagged a tasty trio of medals on the weekend. Errington elementary’s Emmett Griffin won the medals at the BC Elementary Track and Field Championships, hosted at Minoru Track by Richmond’s Kajaks club. Emmett, competing in his first track and field event, won bronze in the 11-yearold-boys’ 100-metre race and anchored his Game Ready Elite club’s 11-year-old 4x100 relay team to gold. He also took home a silver medal from the 4x60 shuttle relay, again in the 11-year-old boys’ category. For more stories on the BC Elementary meet, go to Richmond-News.com/ sport.

Air Attack 18U grab gold at nationals in Edmonton A Richmond volleyball team has earned gold in the nationals. The Air Attack 18U girls team – which plays out of the Richmond Olympic Oval – competed at the nationals in Edmonton last week. The girls (pictured right) secured the gold medal win against Sas-

katoon’s Lloyminster Rustlers with a score of 15-8 in the third set of the finals. Despite a narrow loss of 23-25 during the first set, the team’s coach Yersin Yung said the girls were not going to allow this to set them back from winning.

The girls turned the tables after forcing Lloydminster to make a number of key mistakes and won the set 25-18. With several key blocks made by starting middle Christina Sofikitas, the team took an early 8-0 lead in the third set and

eventually won the game 15-8. The team won against Rhino White from Alberta 25-11 and 25-21 during the semifinals with exceptional playing from junior players Isabella Villasenor, Elena Liu-Fei and Kara Lam. —Valerie Leung/News

Fond memories linger every day, Remembrance keeps them near.

OESER, Frances (MiiIler) 1926 - 2022 Francesca was born on January 1st, 1926 in Karamurat, Romania. In 1929, her parents, Peter and Emilia Miiller immigrated to Canada with their four little daughters, settling in Estevan, Saskatchewan, where they struggled to farm through the “Dirties Thirties”. With their growing family, they moved to BC in 1941 and bought a farm on Cambie Road in Richmond. There, Fran worked on the family farm with her eight sisters and brother, and also for Imperial Packers in Steveston. (You may have seen her picture and quote posted in the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Museum.) Franzi and Otto Paul Oeser married in 1943, eventually buying property on Gilbert Road, where together they built a beautiful and productive farm - much like their marriage of 52 years, based on love, faith, devotion, and pride in family.

A member of St. Joseph the Worker Parish for 75 years, Fran was long engaged in parish activities. In retirement, she was a dedicated Richmond Food Bank volunteer for more than 30 years, enjoying the work and the personal connections. She relished energetic daily walks, bowling, bingo, jigsaw puzzles, country music, Wheel of Fortune & Jeopardy, and playing games with family and friends. She was praised for her cooking and loved hosting and attending parties with family and friends. Another pleasure was road trips across North America as well as cruises and travels through Europe, South America, and the South Pacific. Her vegetable gardens were admired by visitors and neighbours on Gilbert Road, Pigott Road, and in Steveston. She is remembered as a model of hard work, cheerfulness, and welcoming hospitality. Franzi is predeceased by her beloved Otto and her son-in-law Chris Morris. She is survived by her daughter Margaret Hewlett, grandsons Albert and Matthew, granddaughter Mary-Louise, daughterin-law Stacey, great granddaughter Twila, and many family and friends who loved her dearly. Heartfelt thanks to them, and all who cared for Fran through her last days at home and during her short stay in hospital before her death on April 9th. Fran’s charities of choice were the Richmond Hospital Foundation, Richmond Food Bank Society, and St. Joseph the Worker Parish. Fran’s funeral will be 11:00 am, June 7 at St. Joseph the Worker Church, 4451 Williams Road, Richmond. Her final resting place will be at Ocean View Burial Park.
