Coun. has nothing to apologize for Dear Editor, Re: “Councillor apologizes for suggestion of ‘preferential treatment’ for developer,” News, June 30. With regard to the headlined story about Carol Day’s apology to council about preferential treatment, I think that she has every right to be critical and need not apologize.

Much of our city council has been in place for far too long and always seem to be on the side of developers and not ordinary citizens. This has gone on for year after year. In other circumstances, the approval of a member’s husband’s proposal would be called nepotism.

Dear Editor, Congratulations to Alan Sakai, the Steveston Community Society and all the volunteers who produced an amazing Canada Day celebration in a new format. It was wonderful to walk from Britannia Shipyards to Gary Point and take in all the sights and festivities without too much congestion. The music was great, with lots of variety for all age groups. The zones were a good idea making it possible for everyone to feel comfortable, and thanks to the City of Richmond for the water stations. There were many red and white shirts visible and Canadian flags were flying. We have much to be grateful for as Canadians, and it was a lovely day to celebrate our good fortune and diversity.

Too many broken fixtures at Minoru Dear Editor, I was very excited to enjoy the facilities at the Minoru Centre for Active Living. The new and spacious venue is really beneficial to our community. Many aspects of the facility are great, especially the individual changing rooms and showers. However, I was also surprised at how many appliances were already out of order; that is not acceptable for a new venue. The broken appliances include the lockers, the latches of the shower and change rooms did not work properly (one door had to be slammed quite hard to close and become locked), water from the shower heads stopped suddenly (fortunately I had fin-

ished my shower) and some of the handheld shower heads were broken. The lights in the shower rooms turned off suddenly (twice I had to finish my shower in the dark). Most of the sockets for hair blowers did not work (many said the sockets with two outlets cannot be used at the same time or it will be broken.) I have never seen so many broken fixtures and appliances in a venue before, especially not one that is so new. I hope the management can address these issues as soon as possible, so that this new facility can be enjoyed to its full potential.

LETTERS Where are city lawn mowers? Dear Editor, Today being July 1st, I couldn’t help but notice the lack of grass cutting throughout Richmond. Grass growing is no surprise event like snowfall, as it happens every spring. What has been cut, is either left for the wind to take care or just left to cause fire hazards. There seems to be no follow-up of the work as one only needs to look at school grounds, parks or walkways. No or little clean up is done. At best, this is not the city’s finest work. Maybe shift some of the crews that do such a wonderful job at City Hall or Brighouse Park and put some care into all areas of Richmond.

Too many near misses with cyclists Dear Editor,

As a resident in the Steveston area, I have noticed many near misses between cyclists and pedestrians on the sidewalk because more and more cyclists choose to ride on the sidewalks which are sometimes narrow. While it is perfectly acceptable to ride bikes on the boardwalk, it is unsafe to do so on the sidewalks. The Steveston village area has seniors, toddlers, and small dogs that take their daily walks. There are, in fact, six senior homes in the Steveston village area. These cyclists somehow feel they can go on the sidewalks when they please and when they want to avoid waiting for the traffic light. Some zoom through stop signs. It is perplexing and difficult to predict if they would zoom through intersections.

Pedestrians often have to yield to cyclists on the sidewalk out of fear of being struck. What is appalling is having witnessed a group of adolescents nearly knocking over a senior in a walker. With no remorse, they laughed and continued their way. We have a culture that reflects selfishness and little to no social responsibility, and I hope some cyclists consider taking the road instead of sidewalk, especially as traffic is usually not busy in this area. Cyclists should not misuse both roads and sidewalks, which are shared public spaces. Parents, please stop teaching your kids how to ride a bike on the sidewalks. Take them to a park or the boardwalk.

Cat still lost but community care still here Dear Editor, We have been searching since June 15th for our lost grey and white cat in the Ryan Road area. (He slipped out of his new cat harness.) Even though he is still missing, we just want to take a moment to thank all of those in the community who have reached out with multiple sightings. Although regretfully none could be confirmed to be our fellow, we are still grateful for all the “extra eyes on the ground,” tips and words of encouragement we have received so far. It is wonderful to know that a sense of community still exists. So, thank you neighbours; we wanted you to know that your support has been and still is, really appreciated!

Rainbow crosswalk ‘deliberately marked’

A City of Richmond crew is being tasked to repair the rainbow crosswalk on Minoru Boulevard, after it appeared to be vandalized Monday night.

A man calling himself James posted on Twitter photos of the damage, which showed thin black tracks in an “X” shape. The post sparked disgust from many Richmondites, including Coun. Michael Wolfe, who reported the incident to the relevant city department. City spokesperson Clay Adams confirmed to the News that the crosswalk – close to Minoru and Granville Avenue – appears to have been “deliberately marked overnight. “It is extremely disappointing that a person or persons would do this, but city crews will address the situation as soon as possible.” James said on his post that “Discrimination should not be acceptable in our community…this is discrimination & it isn’t good — someone went out of their way to do this.” The crosswalk was painted in July 2019 and has been relatively vandalism-free, compared to other similar crosswalks in other municipalities across the province. In August, 2019, however, posters glued

WEEKEND MAX MARA (LICENSEE)

to a wall close to the crosswalk, in English and Chinese, warned people about so called “pedosexual right” — sex between adults and minors. The posters included rainbows, icons of adults and a child and a message about resisting “these criminal child predators, their child abuse, and their anti-human agenda.” In July 2018 - a few yards away from the current site of the crosswalk – the steps to the Richmond Cultural Centre were defaced with biblical references, 24 hours after rainbow colours were chalked on to mark Pride Week. —Alan Campbell/Richmond News

Two-bedroom at $3,000/month has would-be renter fuming A post ranting about the high cost of rent in Richmond was trending on social media last week. According to the post on Vanpeople.com, a Chinese-language website for free classified ads, a person looking to rent was appalled when they came across an ad for a two-bedroom apartment in Richmond centre listed at $3,000/month. “There is not even a single piece of furniture inside the apartment, and the $3,000 rental fee doesn’t include any Wi-Fi or electricity fees,” the person wrote. The condo is described as “brand new and spacious” although it didn’t list the square footage. The landlord also required the renter to sign a one-year contract.

Richmond’s rainbow crosswalk appears to have been vandalized.

“That’s a huge amount of money,” said Richmond housing advocate John Roston, reacting to the $3,000/month listing. However, he noted housing unaffordability has been an issue in Richmond for years. Roston said when he got involved in politics four years ago he spoke to many young

people who were struggling to find an affordable place to rent in Richmond. And even people who own a comfortable home in Richmond now are impacted by the high rents, noted Roston. “If you don’t think the housing crisis is important to you and you live in a comfortable house right now, then the next time you go into a grocery store or a restaurant, look around at the staff. These people can’t afford to live here. They all have long commutes from somewhere else. “What’s going to happen is they will look for jobs closer to where they live. That’s why we have Richmond companies that say they can’t keep staff. The housing crisis is important to you, even if you have a comfortable house.” Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC)’s most recent data is from October 2021. At that time, a two-bedroom apartment in Richmond city centre cost $1,542/month while a similar unit in Richmond West went for $1,767/month. — Nono Shen/Richmond News

A MESSAGE from your MLA

THURSDAY, JULY 7, 2022

TERESA WAT

MLA | RICHMOND NORTH CENTRE 604-775-0754 Teresa.Wat.MLA@leg.bc.ca

With the spring sitting of the Legislature coming to an end, I am excited to spend the next few months focusing on the many pressing issues that need to be addressed by the current government. The spring session saw the Premier and his government struggle to deliver on their promises yet again. While they made many commitments to improve affordability for people, we see the exact opposite happening. Home prices have never been higher, and the cost of fuel and groceries continues to skyrocket. Although the Official Opposition put forward several concrete ideas to put more money back in people’s pockets, the government ignored our suggestions — which only hurts British Columbians.

Joining the Opening Night of the BC premiere of ‘In Wonderland’ at Gateway Theatre.

Meanwhile, the government has opened just over 7,200 units of affordable housing out of the 114,000 units promised in 2017 – that’s less than 7% of their commitment. There is also no sign of the promised $400 renters’ rebate, at a time when rent costs are also rising rapidly. Locally, the government has also gone quiet about the status of Richmond Hospital. Despite the candidate for Richmond-Steveston promising shovels in the ground by 2021, this clearly was not the case when the hospital expansion was left out of the 2021 budget. While the Premier promised completion in 2024, the construction of the acute care tower has been delayed and won’t be open to patients until 2028. The South Tower and Milan Ilich Pavilion upgrades, promised for 2029, have now been delayed until 2031. Additionally, far too many people continue to struggle to access primary care. Without a family doctor, they are forced to spend hours lining up outside a walkin clinic or sitting in the emergency room. Patients want to receive a continuity of care, provided over the course of their lifetime by a doctor who knows their medical history. Everyone deserves timely access to medical care, yet under this government, one in five British Columbians don’t have access to a family doctor which in turn, puts pressure on other areas of our health care system.

Celebrating Seniors Week with our seniors and the Community Arts Council of Richmond at Minoru Centre for Active Living.

Visiting the annual Richmond Night Market, an international attraction and the largest night market in North America.

People are very worried for their future, and relieving those concerns requires true leadership. I will continue to press the government on these and other issues that are important to the people of Richmond. Teresa Wat

This weekend, Zylmans will hand over the last pallet of his famed strawberries at the 78-year-old W & A Farms at Westminster Highway and No. 8 Road, after selling a 20-acre parcel in the fall of last year.

Nope, the 65-year-old is calling it a career – and it has literally been his entire life – in the produce-farming business.

“I may take one of those things, what are they called? Oh, yes, a holiday. Something I’ve never really ever done,” joked Zylmans, who said he used to send his wife and kids on vacation, because there was always too much to do at the farm. “Maybe I’ll start to enjoy life a little bit more. I went to Hawaii once, but I tuned into the dozen or so cameras at all the storage barns, checking them 12 times a day.” He said he didn’t want to sell the produce side of the business until he was confident his adult children were “well on into their careers.

“We put one of the properties up for sale and the right money came to the table.

“But I’ve still got my other lands, the farm and cattle in Delta and two others here in Richmond…the 30-acre parcel here on Westminster and some more in Gilbert, still growing grass crops and green crops.” “The produce (side) was very time-consuming. And it has been a horrific last season weather-wise. I won’t miss that I tell you.”

Moving my cattle herd out (for the last time) was probably one of my toughest days. BILL ZYLMANS

Despite agreeing to sell the parcel last fall, Zylmans said he wanted to have one last go at the strawberry season but had “no idea what the winter and spring was going to be like. “I’m kinda glad I won’t be going through that again. Moving my cattle herd out in the winter was probably one of my toughest days. That’s when it became real. “I started doing that when I was nineyears-old. I was born and raised (here).” Zylmans is still going to be involved in the agricultural industry, be it consulting, tending to his remaining acreage or in his role as chair of the Canadian Potato Council. “I still want to be involved and help where I can,” he added. “I’m going to miss the customers but not the politics of the municipality.”

Richmond loses “true citizen” and “sporting icon” council of the day.

Alan Campbell ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Jim Lamond (front) in 2016 with fellow sports wall of fame inductee Don Fennell.

Richmond has lost one of its “huge pillars” and a “sporting icon.” That’s the sentiment of veteran city councillor Bill McNulty, after the sudden passing of his friend of 50 years and Richmond Sports Council co-founder Jim Lamond, who was 93. Lamond passed away in Richmond Hospital on July 1 after a brief battle with COVID, which had escalated to pneumonia. As well as spearheading the sports council – of which he was still chair – Lamond and McNulty were heavily involved in the Canada Games and spent decades together lobbying various levels of government for funding for sport and for tournaments to be hosted in Richmond. He was a founding member of the Richmond chapter of KidSport and was inducted into Richmond Sports Wall of Fame in 2016 after successfully chairing the 2009 Richmond Senior Games Committee.

Lamond was a volunteer soccer coach for the team his son, Jim jnr., was playing on in South Arm, before rising through the ranks at city, provincial and national soccer association levels. “It was a shock. He was doing extremely well,” McNulty told the Richmond News on Monday. “Jim was a huge pillar in the sporting world, not just in Richmond, but provincially and nationally as well. “We were the ones that came up with the idea of forming a sports council in Richmond back in the ‘70s…but it took us to ’84 because we had to fight with the city

“He was heavily involved in soccer and I was in track and field, but he did so much for so many other sports. So many events and facilities wouldn’t be here today without Jim. He has left big shoes to fill.” Indeed, the News’ publisher, Alvin Chow, had nothing but praise for Lamond, despite only meeting him for the first time in 2018. “My first encounter with Jim was for the Seniors 55+ BC Games bidding, when he approached me to gain support of the bidding,” said Chow. “Richmond eventually won the bid, but the event was cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic. But I had various encounters with Jim at Richmond Sports Council and Kidsport Richmond. “Jim was a shining example of a true community citizen.” Richmond News reader Bob Jackson, another longtime friend of Lamond, joined in the tributes, describing him as a “great citizen of Richmond.” As well as his numerous sporting achievements, Jackson pointed to Lamond’s vol-

unteering for the Royal Canadian Legion, where he was an active member for more than 70 years.

“During the last 35 years, Jim was a stalwart, selling Legion poppies in front of the Ironwood B.C Liquor Store for the 10 days each year prior to Remembrance Day,” Jackson told the News. A native of Scotland, Lamond was in the British Army at the end of the Second World War and was involved in the Berlin Airlift after the war ended. He immigrated to Toronto in the early ‘50s before settling in Richmond in the late ‘60s. “Jim made Richmond a better community. He will be missed,” added Jackson. Lamond is survived by his wife, June, and two children, Chris Carr and Jim jnr and wife Raj and two grandchildren Kiran and Colin. A celebration of life has been planned for Saturday, Aug. 13 at 2 p.m. at the South Arm Community Centre. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to KidSport Richmond in Lamond’s name.

Heart-wrenching TikTok video about loss goes viral Nono Shen NSHEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

A Richmond singer songwriter has put lyrics to a popular movie soundtrack to create a heart-wrenching video that’s gone viral and brought “a sense of relief” to thousands grieving the loss of a loved one. Emilee Moore’s TikTok, which has had more than 20 million views so far, is set to a snippet of the

soundtrack for the 2009 Oscar-winning, computeranimated movie Up.

The part of the soundtrack Moore chose is from a poignant scene with no lyrics. “I just decided, let me try something. I was thinking about my grandmother, who passed away due to COVID, and I just wrote over that part,” said Moore. “Then I thought, why don’t I just put this up on

TikTok and see if people like that. Because lots of people know that movie and everyone loves that scene.”

even reach out before the song came out asking if they could have a copy of it to use for funerals.”

The video immediately blew up on TikTok with people using it to produce their own videos to remember lost loved ones. “Many people reached out saying this song has brought them a “sense of relief” after feeling lost and alone in their grief for months...and even years.”

Emilee Moore said Moore. “I had several people

Realizing how powerfully the music was resonating, Moore invited people to send her photos of loved ones they’d lost. The response was incredible, said Moore. Her Instagram account was flooded with more than 1,000 direct messages from people sending in photos and sharing stories of people they’d lost. Moore created a second version of the video, which includes hundreds of the photos submitted to hon-

our their lives and create a community for those who are still grieving.

As seen in the new video, which is on YouTube, Moore fastens rows of photos to a white wall, while words recall memories of some of those lost. Moore describes it as “a wall of pain and remembrance” for the precious souls that have left. “This song has an indescribable power to it, and I truly believe it’s changing lives. More people need to hear this, especially since the world is still processing all the losses from COVID.”

Richmondites feel frustration, shame looking for homes lessness, but De Whalen, president of the Richmond Poverty Reduction Coalition (RPRC) not many people knew about them.

Maria Rantanen MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Scott Newcombe struggled for years to find a stable home, until he “won the lottery” and got into BC Housing. Maria Rantanen photo

Scott Newcombe calls himself a “military brat” – in other words, he grew up on naval bases, moving from town to town with a new home and a new school every year. This ability to adapt quickly taught him resiliency – something he needed later in life when he was struggling to find a home in Richmond and Vancouver. The first time he was evicted from his home on Vancouver’s westside, his van became his home. He quickly learned to “pound the pavement” looking for a place to live, perfecting his presentation to potential landlords into an “art form.” When he finally got into BC Housing six years ago, it was “like winning the lottery,” Newcombe told the Richmond News. But this was after a 12-year wait, going from one teardown to another, moving every 12 months or so, taking in roommates to cover the rent and, at times, sleeping on someone’s couch. Newcombe would hide his long hair, wear the right clothes, say the right thing, and always take his shoes off when entering a rental home. “Little things like that work in the back of a landlord’s mind,” he explained.

He repeated his “winning the lottery” line several times, because he knows how hard it is to get into BC Housing. There are currently more than a thousand households in Richmond on the waitlist. Remarkably, Newcombe exudes positivity, despite his struggles. He knows other people have had it worse than him. “When you’re living in your car, you’re thankful you’ve got a car — somebody else only has a tent. When you have a tent, you’re thankful you have a tent, because there’s a guy on the sidewalk who doesn’t even have a tent,” Newcombe said. But he wants the government, those deciding on housing issues, to see the struggle

people go through to find a stable home. Those who have low incomes or are struggling on meagre disability benefits aren’t the only ones looking for homes. There’s the “guy with a steady job and kids” out there also competing in a tight, and expensive, rental market, and the homeless are at the “very bottom,” Newcombe noted.

Despite sitting on the homelessness steering committee and personally knowing city staff who work on homelessness issues, she only learned about it from an online Richmond News article Furthermore, registration was through the city’s online portal or by phone, and many people who don’t have stable homes don’t have phones or computers, Whalen explained. On Thursday, the Richmond Poverty Reduction Coalition and the Richmond Food Bank hosted their own community roundtable with about a dozen people speaking about their “lived experience.” The sessions started with collecting words that represented how it felt looking for housing – frustration, discrimination, discouragement, long waitlists, high rents, shame and barriers were just some of the words that came up quickly for the participants.

City of Richmond asks residents about homelessness

RPRC and the food bank are launching a campaign called the Richmond Electors Needing Tenancy (RENT) in anticipation of the October municipal election to highlight the urgent need for affordable rental housing and outlines recommendations.

The City of Richmond recently held two “community conversations” about home-

They are hoping to present these recommendations to city council on July 11.

“If you’re going to rent out to somebody, you’re not going to go to the bottom of the list,” he added.

ASK A PROFESSIONAL How can you protect your home from Q: summer wildfires? A:

friends keep telling me about how they sold Q: My scrap gold jewellery to you and how great your

gold testing machine is. Can you explain what type of machine and how it works?

A:

We have a Niton Precious Metal Analyzer. This machine uses X-Ray technology to determine the purity of your gold, silver and platinum.

Most dealers use an acid and need to estimate how much gold disappears, after the acid is applied, to determine the Karat. Our machine tells us and you, because we allow you to watch, the exact karat of all the gold we need to test.

Jim Richardson

Most people who do watch are fascinated and very impressed with Western Coin & the gold tester. Stamp I remember a lady coming in with a bag of gold nuggets. She was told that they were 14k. Our machine showed that they were 22k and she received over $1,000 more than our competition offered. Another gentleman was told that his bracelet was 14k and we showed him that it was the 18k he thought it was. jim

Summer has arrived and with that comes the threat of wildfires. Evergreen trees are more flammable than leafy trees. When a fire starts, the embers from a fire can travel up to 2 kilometers and settle on your home. Prepare for potential fires by removing all dried leaves, twigs, garden scraps and garbage from around your home and structures, including from eave troughs. Prune lower hanging branches close to your home and reduce density of trees in close proximity to your buildings. Consider replacing rooves on structures with more fire resistant materials like metal or asphalt. Old dried wood rooves can be a fire enhancer. Upgrade your siding to a metal or a fiber cement product for further protection. There are many building materials out there that can help reduce fires. Do your homework and research this further. Most importantly, is to have an insurance policy in place to protect your homes and structures. Start preparing now! Your Central Agencies Ltd. team is available 7 days a week to answer your insurance questions and help protect yourself against losses due to wildfire.

Scaled-down Salmon Fest still a ‘great success’

Richmondites were out and about on Canada Day enjoying the first in-person Steveston Salmon Festival since 2019.

There were no large crowds in Steveston on Canada Day, but many still had fun.

“It was a great success considering the goals we had set for a ‘return to community gatherings’ and ‘giving consideration for everyone’s safety’,” said Alan Sakai, Steveston Community Society president.

There was no parade, salmon bake or fireworks, but Sakai said there was a great turnout at the event’s various “zones” featuring music, cultural exhibits and children’s entertainment. Sakai said he was proud of the great job done by organizers and volunteers.

“I really enjoyed the entertainment the programming team put together. I was

moving to the rhythm all day,” he said.

So what’s in store for next year’s Steveston Salmon Festival? “My informal poll of the exiting crowd was that they had a good time with some wistful remembrances for things like the salmon bake, chow mien sales and the parade,” said Sakai. —Vikki Hui/Richmond News

ASK A PROFESSIONAL Q: What can be done to prevent progression

In your time of need, our family is here to help your family

of Osteoarthritis of the hip & knee?

A:

Some things just happen, of course, and a minority of osteoarthritis cases will get worse regardless of the measures taken. But, overall, various forms of exercise as well as visits to the chiropractor’s office have been consistently shown to substantially benefit people with osteoarthritis of the knee or hip. Effective exercise programs include walking, running, and biking. Any or all of these are appropriate in most circumstances. Aquatic exercise, such as swimming or water aerobics, is also of great benefit in the treatment of knee or hip osteoarthritis. Additionally, core exercises are an important part of any comprehensive exercise program, especially when a primary objective is to slow or prevent osteoarthritis. Core exercises help stabilize and strengthen weight-bearing structures such as your lower back and pelvis, removing significant mechanical loads from other weight-bearing joints such as the hip and knee. Redistributing mechanical stresses away from your hips and knees through exercise and regular chiropractic care helps these joints to function more optimally and retain peak levels of performance, hopefully, far into the future. Call to have a posture and alignment check up to make sure your pelvis, hips and knees are supporting you in their best possible positions.

Starting at age 30, men may experience a decrease in testosterone that could result in lower sex drive, lack of energy, mood swings, increased body fat, loss of strength or muscle mass, restlessness and difficulty concentrating or generalized aches and pains. This is known as andropause. Not only does andropause make people feel less well, but it also puts many at risk of osteoporosis (bone weakening) and cardiovascular problems. While many men think that this may be inevitable, there are many ways to combat andropause. Testosterone supplements come in several forms such as gels, injections, patches, and pills. Talk to your pharmacist today to find out whether testosterone supplementation – and in which form may be best suited for you.

Q: I

There are also lifestyle changes to reduce the symptoms and risks of andropause. Regular exercise will help improve mood and energy levels, control weight, and increase muscle and bone mass. Try to aim for 150 minutes of physical activity each week. A healthy diet will increase energy level, help maintain weight, as well as reduce disease risk. Follow Canada’s Food Guide to make sure you are getting proper balance of nutrients. Smoking increases bone loss and the risk for heart disease. Talk to your pharmacist today for advice on smoking cessation.

What is andropause and what can I do?

Erin MacPherson Manager

have been wearing dentures for many years and they are to the point that my gums are extremely sore and red: what can I do?

Soft tissue management is the answer you are seeking. Rehabilitation of soft tissues is primary. First, your dentures require cleaning to remove offensive organisms that may be contributing to the inflammation and edema (swelling). Tissue conditioners (temporary soft lining material) are placed on the tissue fitting surface of your dentures to provide a clean positive adaptation to your gum tissues.Healing begins and your tissues are reassessed in a week to confirm the progress of healing. Generally a second and or third tissue conditioner may need to be applied before proceeding to the construction of new dentures. New dentures promote a healthy clean fitting surface for many years. If you have any questions regarding this procedure or anyf other denture related subject, please book your free consultation with us.
