Steveston tram Stop smashing can bring back Play-Doh onto roads our heritage Dear Editor,

Yesterday morning, when my mom was driving me to summer school, I couldn’t help but notice hundreds of bumps on the road.

Dear Editor, The Steveston heritage tram 1220 should run on a route like it used to from 1905 to 1958. The tram has been Steveston’s anchor for years. The city should be able to fully enjoy that experience again. I know that five years ago, Mayor Brodie proposed a plan that would have resulted in the operation of a heritage tram. Unlike those who might have been opposed, I am fully in support of Malcom Brodie’s $50,000 plan to operate a heritage tram. I would suggest a route starting at Brighouse station and ending at Steveston central, being the current restoration display building. Tourists flock to Richmond for two things; good food and heritage. The tram can bring back our heritage.

Colin V. Age 11

These extremely annoying bumps made me feel like I was on a rollercoaster that’s about to fly off the track. Since Richmond’s population grew over the years, it’s not surprising to find a few bumps and holes in the streets. However, heavy trucks and construction of new buildings have strongly impacted the quality of the road we ride on. What is the point of having fancy buildings and towers when the street quality is totally ghetto? I understand road construction costs money, time, and that sometimes it causes traffic issues. But maybe if the crews do better jobs instead of smashing materials onto potholes like playing PlayDoh, our car rides would be a lot enjoyable and comfortable.

Step aside premiers, it’s time for the adults Dear Editor,

The provincial and territorial leaders have been much in the news over the past few days with their perennial complaints (it never stops) about the amount of federal funding into local health care costs. But it is not as “simple” as just dollars, there is also the federal taxing areas earlier transferred from the federal government to the provinces. BC Premier John Horgan, as the Chair of the Council of the Federation, says that the federal government should “sit down like adults” and discuss the issue. He really means, send more money, without conditions. The double speak is breathtaking. The so-called “have provinces,” including BC, Ontario and Alberta, are effectively saying to the feds “tax us more so that you can return less back to us.” There is only one taxpayer, whether paying to the feds or the province. If the have provinces want more money for health care, get it from their own budgets without hiding behind the feds taxing levels. A discussion among adults would actually require adults on both sides. Maybe too much to hope for!

Home disturbance sparks large police presence

$3.3 million renos taking place at Richmond City hall Maria Rantanen

VHUI@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Richmond City Hall is partially wrapped in construction packaging – due to two renovation and upgrade projects, costing $3.3 million.

Police presence near Aberdeen Centre last Friday night was in response to a disturbance at a residence, said Richmond RCMP. Some Richmondites took to social media to find out what was going on as around six police cars were spotted in the area at approximately 10 p.m. The Richmond News had reached out to the RCMP late Friday night for more details about the incident. On Tuesday afternoon, Cpl. Ian Henderson, RCMP spokesperson, said police responded to a report of a disturbance at a residence in the area at approximately 9:20 p.m. on Friday night. The police arrived to a smashed front door and found three men inside, who

The man was later sent to a local hospital to be treated for a non-life threatening injury, and no criminal charges are being considered at the moment.

The HVAC system and the roof over council chambers are both being replaced. The mechanical ventilation system in the 20-year-old building is being replaced as it has exceeded its life expectancy, explained city spokesperson Clay Adams. The west side of the building – which currently has scaffolding - is where this work is being done. City council approved the $1.7 million project in 2020, and it entails replacing the air conditioning unit in the main electrical room and replacing the fan coils in council chambers and

The green roof over council chambers – the round portion on the southeast side of the building – and a portion of city hall is made of bamboo, but this has been deteriorating and leaking in some areas, Adams noted. “The bamboo on the roof is being replaced with less aggressive Japanese black pine and the landscape architect involved with the building of city hall is involved to make sure the original design intent is not lost,” he added. The roof replacement is budgeted at $1.6 million and is expected to be completed by the fall. The HVAC upgrades are expected to be done in early 2023. Adams noted both projects at city hall, located on No. 3 Road at Granville Avenue, are expected to come under budget.

Celebrating 50 years of making ‘The Difference’

Averbach (pictured right during his trek) has always enjoyed walking. In fact, walking from Calgary to Vancouver was an item on his bucket list. “Around five years ago, I was walking around Stanley Park, on the seawall… And I said, ‘You know, if I did this every day, I guess I could be in Kamloops in about two months. And I started to think that maybe before I was 80, I would do something like that,” he said. Averbach decided to check this item off his bucket list when his cousin, business

“[Golden] said to me, ‘I want you to do it and raise money for the cure and get rid of cancer.’ When you make a deathbed promise, you’ve got to do it,” he said. After Golden passed away, Averbach also lost three more loved ones to cancer within seven weeks earlier this year. Bob’s Walk for Cancer Research is Averbach’s way of honouring their memories. “I’m probably healthy all my life. I’ve never had the flu. Once in a while, I get a cold...” he said. He expects to reach Vancouver in midAugust.

Tory leadership hopeful swings by Richmond Nono Shen NSHEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

The man who wants to be Canada’s next Prime Minister was in Richmond on Thursday, making a series of bold promises, as is the wont of most politicians. Pierre Poilievre, who’s at the forefront of the Conservative Party leadership race, made a brief visit to a Richmond Asian restaurant on Thursday afternoon. Poilievre was greeted by former Richmond-Steveston MP Kenny Chiu and Richmond community members at the Continental Seafood Restaurant on Cambie Road. Among his pledges was to put “Canadians back in charge of their lives by making Canada the freest country on earth” and his previous promise to “defund CBC.” Poilievre said people should be “free to work hard and achieve your dreams, start a business, hire more people to fulfill the Canadian dream that attracted so many immigrants to our country...” On the hot topic of the crippling inflation rates, Poilievre, when asked by the Richmond News, said that he would tackle the issue with “common sense,” before offering up his oft-spoken defunding of the CBC

as one of the means to that end.

“We will save money for taxpayers by cutting and defunding CBC to save a billion dollars, getting rid of the failed infrastructure bank that only gives money to powerful corporations when they run over budget and eliminating handouts for large multinational corporations and using the money to cut taxes instead,” added Poilievre. “For small businesses, I will lower the tax burden so that your pay cheque is more powerful and that you keep more of what you are.” As for the housing affordability crisis affecting much of the Lower Mainland, Poilievre promised to fill some of that gaping void by repurposing 15 per cent of government buildings. He also pledged to “get rid of the carbon tax to lower fuel prices,” “get rid of gatekeepers that are blocking business from producing more affordable food, energy and housing” and “stop printing money and start building more houses.” Poilievre gave a nod to Richmond’s Chinese-speaking population, saying that Chinese-Canadian values are “in common with conservative values, such as the value of families, hard work, self-reliance and lawfulness.”

Mike Heath Memorial tournament raises more than $40,000 “Humorous clips from the movie soundtrack were played after particularly awful shots from the tee.”

They were joined in the clubhouse by another 40 or so people for the post-round banquet, where a raffle was held for several donated prizes that included an autographed Thatcher Demko jersey and photo, as well as a pair of club seats to a future Canuck’s game.

The first Annual Mike Heath Memorial Foundation Golf Tournament was a roaring success last week, raising upwards of an incredible $20,000, which was matched by another charitable foundation.

More than $20,000 was raised at the event, which was supplemented, in no small measure, by a generous gift of $20,000 from the CIBC Wood-Gundy Park Place Foundation.

The event was organized by Heath’s family and friends and held at Mylora Golf Course on Sidaway Road and was organized to honour the life of the Richmond man, who passed away two years ago, aged just 36, from a rare heart condition known as inherited long QT syndrome.

Family and friends of Mike Heath at the first ever memorial golf tournament in his name.

The money raised is going to the Inherited Arrhythmia Clinic at St. Paul’s Hospital, the Children’s Heart Clinic at BC Children’s Hospital and Canucks for Kids.

the “Happy Gilmore” hole after one of his favourite golf comedies.

A total of 88 golfers teed off shotgun-style last Friday, raising funds and winning prizes along the way.

According to his father, Tom, the idea generated “lots of laughs as golfers had to take a running start to hit their tee shot, as well as use a golden hockey stick for a putter.

The 12th hole – Heath’s jersey number - was designated

The Heath family, added Tom, was “grateful to the sponsors and many individuals and organizations providing silent auction items. “We deeply appreciate the contributions of both those who took part in the day and those who donated directly to the foundation’s website. “Mike’s memory is kept alive by the generosity of his friends and community. We look forward to another fun and successful event next summer.”

Church missionaries do Cycling 100K in honour of late dad hip-hop dance classes Nono Shen

Whatever image you visualize in your head of what a church missionary might or should look like, two women blasted the stereotype wide open at a workshop in Richmond this week.

A Richmond resident will cycle 100 kilometres in likely sizzling hot weather in August to honour her father’s life and raise money for a good cause. In 2017, Andrea Lee’s life changed forever when her beloved dad, Martin Lee, passed away from cancer on her 33rd birthday. On Aug. 27, Lee (pictured right with her dad) will ride in his memory as part of the BC Cancer Foundation’s Tour de Cure - B.C.’s biggest cycling fundraiser, which will take place in Chilliwack to raise awareness and funds to support local cancer research. “(My dad) played every sport imaginable and was the captain of multiple teams at his high school (McRoberts secondary). And then when he had kids, he coached my brothers in all of their sports,” said Lee. “He was a huge athlete.” However, Martin was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer two weeks before Christmas. Thinking her father had always been so strong and able to fight against anything throughout his life, Lee and her family members were clinging to the hope that “he would be fine.” Unfortunately, his health declined very fast and three months later, he passed

away on Lee’s birthday. Lee said she bought herself a really expensive bike right away when her dad passed away and then signed up for the charity cycle. “BC Cancer Foundation was where my dad spent the last two weeks of his life, and they were just the absolute best care I could imagine for him. Every person we met there was wonderful, so I’ll do whatever I can to raise money for them,” said Lee. Lee’s fundraising goal for this year’s Tour de Cure will be $2,500. Lindsay Carswell, director for Tour de Cure, said this annual event used to attract thousands of participants before the pandemic. Participants will have the option to ride wherever and as far as they want and they can also create their challenges by hanging where they are most comfortable, said Carswell, noting that all donations will be used for vital cancer research. For more information, visit Tourdecure.ca.

For Breya Terry and Nani Manu, AKA Sister Terry and Sister Manu, were teaching people how to dance to hip-hop and Polynesian music. And, by all accounts, everyone who attended Wednesday’s free class at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Williams Road appeared to “have a blast” and “lots of fun.” According to Terry, students learned hip-hop dancing movements from her and some Polynesian steps from Manu. Terry told the Richmond News that she used to dance a lot in America before moving to Richmond to continue her work as a missionary. She said she is good at different dancing styles, such as contemporary, ballet and hip-hop. The idea of hosting a dance class for free, according to Terry, cannot only help her hone her dancing skills, but also allow her to connect with more friends.

Sister Terry and sister Manu with students at the dance class. While Manu added that, “For people who haven’t done dancing before, they are more than welcome to join us. “It’s okay if you aren’t good, we want everybody to just come and give it a try.” Manu said they are hoping to host more than one class but being a missionary requires them to go “wherever God needs them to be” every six weeks. The next class might be at Richmond again. Manu said they will keep Richmondites updated.

How will B.C.’s marine LNG opportunity contribute to a lower-carbon future? By Mike Leclair - Vice President, Major Projects and LNG, FortisBC Each year, thousands of vessels travel along shipping routes making global trade possible. The most recent estimates included in the International Maritime Organization’s Fourth Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Study 2020 show that GHG emissions of total shipping have increased from 977 million tonnes in 2012 to 1,076 million tonnes in 2018, mostly due to a continuous increase of global maritime trade. With global shipping emitting more GHG emissions than all of Canada combined, there’s a strong opportunity for liquefied natural gas (LNG) from our province to contribute to emissions reductions and improve the quality of the air we breathe every day. Demand for LNG as a marine fuel has accelerated over the last decade. More than 300 LNG ships are already in operation worldwide with over 2,500 expected to be ordered by 2028 according to a forecast from DNV,

1 FortisBC uses the term renewable and low carbon gas to refer collectively to the low carbon and carbon neutral gases or fuels that the utility can acquire under the Greenhouse Gas Reduction (Clean Energy) Regulation, which are: Renewable Natural Gas (RNG or biomethane), hydrogen, synthesis gas (from wood waste) and lignin. Depending on their source, all of these gases have differing levels of lifecycle carbon intensity. All gases would meet the proposed B.C. carbon intensity threshold for low-carbon gases of 36.4 g CO2e per megajoule set out in the 2021 B.C. Hydrogen Strategy. 2 Renewable Natural Gas is produced in a different manner than conventional natural gas. It is derived from biogas, which is produced from decomposing organic waste from landfills, agricultural waste and wastewater from treatment facilities. The biogas is captured and cleaned to create carbon neutral Renewable Natural Gas (also called biomethane).

Rogers makes history at Worlds

Richmond’s Camryn Rogers has made history by becoming the first Canadian woman to win a medal at a field

event at the World Athletics Championships. On Sunday morning, Rogers (pictured right) won the silver medal in the hammer throw at the worlds in Eugene, Oregon.

The Kajaks alumna and recent graduate of the University of California – where she broke Canadian and NCAA records – took the silver on her third throw in the final. Rogers, 23, had come into the event as the national record holder and was ranked fourth in the world. Her throw of 75.52 metres didn’t just earn her an incredible silver, it was Canada’s first medal of the entire 2022 competition. Afterwards, an ecstatic Rogers told Athletics Canada that she was “completely overwhelmed right now with emotion, but I am so happy. “I am so motivated and so excited to be coming home with this medal. It shows every throw, every lift, this is what it leads to.” And, according to Athletics Canada, she was fighting back the tears when asked about the significance of having her mother Shari in the crowd. “She came down to the railing and gave me a huge hug and that’s when it hit me,” said Rogers. “When she wrapped her arms around me I started bawling on the spot.” —Alan Campbell/Richmond News

Dolphin Classic returns to the courts this weekend ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

The sizzling summer of sport continues this weekend with the return of the legend that is the Dolphin Basketball Classic. The fabled 4v4 tournament is being held for the 35th time, with South Arm Park once again playing host to some of the region’s best basketball players.

“We don’t appear to have lost any momentum...I’ve been fueled by their energy. Teams do age out and the three-year gap means more have aged out than normal. But there is a vibrant basketball community here and I think we’re going to have even more teams this year.” Watson said the brand new courts at South Arm Community Centre will add an extra edge to proceedings.

He added that reigning men’s champions G2 “always do a good job of recruiting players, as do former champs X Falcons.”

Like most major sporting events, the Dolphin has been sidelined since the summer of 2019 due to the pandemic.

And Watson said he was excited to have seven women’s teams competing, which equals the “most we’ve ever had.”

But, according to one of the tournament’s organizers, Bruce Watson, the event hasn’t taken a hit in terms of sponsorship and desire from players to get back on the court.

The tournament is free to watch and there is, as ever, a beer garden and food concessions, as well as the very popular dunk & 3-point contests.

DOYLE, Byron K. Officer at CFB Comox, when he retired. He was also a Careers Officer when posted to Winnipeg, and President of the Mess Committee when with 416 Squadron in Chatham, NB. After his ‘first’ retirement, he found time to commercial fish with his older brother Chuck aboard their 62’ seiner, the Quesnel Lake; however the lure of west coast flying meant the loss of sea legs (‘second’ retirement) and regaining his wings, this time strapped into a Cessna 185 on floats, exploring British Columbia’s west coast in support of fishing operations with Quality Fish Company and the Canadian Fishing Co., the latter company at which Byron officially retired for the third time.

It is with regret that we inform you of the passing of Major (Retired) Byron K Doyle, of Comox, B.C. He filed his final flight plan June 15, 2022 and was cleared direct to escape the surly bonds of earth to join his beautiful bride Gerrie Doyle. 1daughter Jaylene of Surrey, BC; Douglas (Lynda) of Victoria, BC; and Elizabeth (Keith) of Richmond, BC; seven grandchildren Jordan, Jerica, Byron, Spencer (Ron), Devin, Brennan and Leah; and two great grandchildren, Brady and Taylor. Byron was predeceased by his parents, brothers Charles, Douglas, Timothy and sister Connie. Byron (BK to his friends), and later in his flying career known as the ‘Wise and Ancient Silver Fox’, was born in Vancouver, BC, September 1, 1932 to Charles (Paddy) Doyle and Margaret Ilona Doyle (nee Gonczy). Raised in various parts of Vancouver, his family ultimately settled on prime farm land between No. 3 and Gilbert Road along Steveston Highway. Life was difficult and money was scarce for the Doyle family after his father perished in a flying incident July 31, 1940; however Byron’s Mom and siblings sowed love and integrity into their lives which eased their economic burden.

604-653-7851

classifieds.richmond-news.com

TODAY'S PUZZLE ANSWERS

BK’s love of flying was instilled by his father and this certainly spurred him to leave the farm and join the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1953. His flight training in the RCAF eventually led him to fighter training on the F-86 Sabre in Chatham, New Brunswick, where he enjoyed poking holes in clouds, and more enthralled when he became smitten with the mischievous blue eyes of Geraldine (Gerrie) Rebecca McCafferty of Newcastle, N.B. Thus began a new chapter of life for BK, with marriage a mere 53 days after his original blind date with Gerrie, and a posting to Europe where Byron would patrol cold-war skies with 444 Squadron stationed at Canadian Forces Base Baden Soellingen, Germany. Byron and Gerrie relished their time in Europe, and returned to Canada with an expanded family: Jaylene and Douglas born on German soil. On their return, Byron was stationed to Centralia, Ontario and Elizabeth was born. There are few people who have found a calling in which they excelled and earned a living – one was Byron. He was a pilot. A damn good pilot as testament from those who flew with him. He earned his wings in the Royal Canadian Air Force and flew fighters in Europe, North Africa and across Canada. BK was an accomplished formation aerobatics pilot. He flew with the Smoke Eaters, a Chipmunk Synchronized Aerobatic Team based out of Centralia, Ontario, and as a member of the Golden Centennaires, Canada’s RCAF aerobatic flying team formed to celebrate Canada’s Centennial celebrations in 1967, displaying 8-plane aerobatics never before seen in the world via an under-powered CT-114 Tutor. The Golden Centennaires flew 121 shows across Canada, the United States and in the Bahamas. He flew a multitude of fighters, the last being the CF 101 – Voodoo. However, his fondness for the CF-86 Sabre could never be equaled and was a proud member of SPAADS. While in the RCAF, he assumed the roles of Chief Flying Instructor, Quality Check Pilot and was Base Flight Safety

Byron and Gerrie had an exciting and fulfilling life due to their postings in Europe and across Canada. They ultimately found home at Crown Isle Resort & Golf Community in Courtenay, BC, among retired military friends and new acquaintances. Note though, their lifetime of being posted and moving every 3 – 4 years continued, and they did feel the need, for one last ‘move’ within Crown Isle, to their last home which became an oasis of serenity for Byron and Gerrie to host soirees, children, grand and great grandchildren and friends. Byron was an avid golfer and enjoyed the comradery of playing 18 holes just outside his doorstep – he was competitive with an enviable handicap and was an obvious choice to complete a foursome for tournaments. His golf cart was seen from fairway to grocery store, and often with a grandchild at the wheel.

CELEBRATION OF LIFE ANNOUNCEMENT

Al (Shady) Lane Sunday, August 7, 2022 from 1 to 4 pm at Richmond Golf and Country Club, 9100 Steveston Highway.

GAWDIN, Bryan Michael October 2, 1965 − May 21, 2022 It is with broken hearts we announce the sudden passing of Bryan Gawdin. He is survived by his loving mother, Betty, spouse Yvonne, and children Kristina and Glenn. A Celebration of Life will be held on July 25th at 3:00 pm at the Ukrainian Hall, 5311 Francis, Richmond, BC. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Hockey Canada Foundation Assist Fund in Bryan’s honour.

Byron and Gerrie for many years would vacation with family and friends in sunny Arizona. Bryon loved animals, especially his Schnauzer, Charli, and for many years supported the local branch of the SPCA. Another passion was riding 2-wheeled vehicles: one would never have thought Byron was bike gang material, however he did pull this off with a louder-than-he-would-care-to-admit Harley Davidson cruising about on Vancouver Island and Mainland BC outings with the ‘gang’. When asked why he so enjoyed longer trips he replied “…because the best cinnamon buns are on the road”. He cultivated many friends from his motorcycling sessions and they remained active in his life, despite handing over the keys a few years ago. Byron’s other 2-wheeled mode of transport was his prized Colnago racing bicycle and this kept him active on the backroads of Comox and Courtenay, reveling in human-powered freedom: it was amazing to relate to others that Byron continued to bicycle well into his 89th year.

HARVEY, Dorothy Marion Agnes

February 15, 1933 - November 28, 2021 After Dorothy’s passing in November, we would now like to invite you to a celebration of Dorothy’s life on Saturday, August 6th at 1:00pm at South Arm United Church, 11051 No 3 Rd, Richmond, BC.

He was active as a volunteer with the Comox Valley Hospice Society, and supported the Comox Valley Transition Society, as well as the Comox Valley & District BC SPCA Branch. Byron was two and a half months from his 90th birthday when he passed away, and his family had planned to celebrate this milestone with a gathering of the clan to fete his accomplishments of life. Unfortunately, this was not meant to be as Byron was diagnosed with a terminal illness which wreaked its finality in a matter of weeks. As a family, we came together to fulfil our father’s wish to remain at home and to pass in his oasis of peace and comfort. His children were at his side to assist this transition to join his beautiful bride and their mother, Gerrie. Byron knew he was terminal and he accepted his fate with grace, strength and humor, confirming he had lived an adventurous and full life with no regrets and, of course, replete with love. He was determined to exit this world on his own terms and at his own pace, which he did. A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Anderson and staff, as well as the Home and Community Care Team who were exceedingly attentive to Byron’s care. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Officers Mess, CFB Comox, September 3, 2022 commencing at 1:00pm. Per Ardua Ad Astra

PASSMORE, Gary Clifford It is with great sadness and much sorrow that the family of Gary Clifford Passmore (@passmoga) announce the sudden passing of their Husband, Father and Poppa G. When Gary learned that his illness was terminal and ravishing his body at “Verstappin speed”, he took the controls. In true Passmore fashion he did it his way and quietly, peacefully exited stage left.

While Gary will no longer walk his beloved maremmas “Floki and Brodir” on the streets of White Rock or North 40, Gary’s wife Jill will walk lovingly and purposefully in his footsteps. Gary is survived by his wife Jill, his son’s Ryan (girlfriend Tinelle), and Cameron (wife Julie), grand-daughter Olivia, and stepsons Josh and Hunter. There will be no service by request. Jill will welcome your support on social media. @jrwton_justJill 604.916.0958
