A rainbow-coloured swastika? Is it just me or has the world turned on its head? To add to the notion of incongruity, this bizarre blend of symbols was on a placard where people were protesting a children’s storytime. Protesting a children’s storytime? Well, I guess in a world of rainbow swastikas, that makes perfect sense. Now to back up... On Monday, Bryan Bone was doing something he’s done for the past decade, reading stories to children as part of the local library’s outreach program. The catch is, he does these readings in his colourful drag persona, Miss Gina Tonic. When Bone is not Gina Tonic, he’s a secondary school teacher and openly gay man who grew up in Richmond and knows the struggles of youth trying to fit in. Not

surprising perhaps, the stories he reads as Miss Gina Tonic tend to celebrate diversity and inclusion.
I’m not sure when the tradition of Drag Storytime began, but it was more than 20 years ago that my son was given a CD of Peter and the Wolf read by Dame Edna, also known as the hilarious and satirical Australian comedian Barry Humphries. Point being, this isn’t a new thing. Back to Monday, Miss Tonic was busy reading stories when a group of protesters showed up and began heckling. It’s unclear how many were there, but two of them barged through the kids and marched towards Gina, yelling at her and taking pictures. Later, Bone said he’d never been so scared but, ever the performer, Gina just told the children this would be the last story and wrapped up the event. The next day, a parent sent us photos of the two men who decided to make spectacles of themselves talking to a police officer who happened to be there (decked out in

That’s when we saw the rainbow swastika above which read, “Fascism comes in all genders and colours.” The other man is holding a placard reading: “Why do LGBTQ organizations hate the innocence of children?” ...interesting tactic. It seems the oppressors are doing a little gender bending (or at least identity switching of their own) by playing the role of victim. Do they honestly think that a colourfullydressed person reading stories to children about inclusion and diversity equates to fascism? And talk about hating the “innocence of children.” I couldn’t think of a better illustration of that than bringing an angry protest aimed at denying people their identity to a children’s storytime. These, indeed, are interesting times. When Donald Trump was first elected, I heard an interview with a scholar who studied dictators and totalitarian states. He
said the first order of business is to sow confusion, create an environment where ideas are turned on their heads and words mean their opposite.
Trump didn’t expect people to believe much of what he said, rather the aim was to twist meaning and make all facts suspect. The same was done under Hitler in Nazi Germany, Joseph Stalin in Russia and Benito Mussolini in Italy, according to the scholar. Obviously we’re a long way from any of those regimes and I don’t mean to overplay this situation, but human rights are always fragile, and chipping away at them can start small. As with many storytimes, the take-home lesson comes at the end. This story ends with people at the event creating a human shield to protect Miss Gina Tonic, and Bone vowing to return for the next Drag Storytime at South Arm Community Centre — albeit with a bit more security. And that, boys and girls (and those in between), is how we fight fascism.

Our bike lanes are good, E-scooter but could be better close call
Former tram lines should be saved
As a young student, for me biking is a very common use of transportation. It’s healthy to be outside in fresh air and helps reduce air pollution caused by cars or other vehicles.
Re: “Steveston tram can bring back our heritage,” Letters, July 21.
Dear Editor,
I think that over the past few years Richmond has improved the quality and quantity of biking and walking paths throughout the city. Which is good, it encourages people to get outdoors and provides a safe path for pedestrians to walk, bike and more. Though these pathways are great, they are not reliable if you are wanting to travel to a farther away place in Richmond. This is why I believe the city should incorporate more bike lanes on busy streets especially. On many streets there are no bike lanes at all, this results in cyclists having to merge with the vehicle
lanes. This causes two major issues: First of all, it puts the cyclists at risk. It can be very dangerous when bikers are wearing dark coloured clothing, at night or when it is dark it is even worse because bikers will not be as visible to drivers. As well, bikes and cars have very different speeds, so it is hard for cars to match the bike’s speed. This is especially a safety hazard when there are only one-lane roads.
Which brings up a second point. If cars cannot surpass cyclists safely, cyclists often block or hold up cars behind them, meaning there will be heavier traffic, and also probably frustrated drivers. Making bike lanes more accessible and having more will definitely impact me and many others in the community.

Dear Editor,
Re: “Dangerous e-biking in Richmond,” News online, July 22. In the morning of July 25, my wife and I were walking southbound on Gilbert Road. A young man riding an e-scooter traveling northbound on the sidewalk almost hit me head on. While cruising at over 20 km/hr, he never even attempted to slow down when he approached us on the narrow sidewalk. If we had collided, both of us may have gotten seriously injured, as this young man didn’t even have a helmet on. I have seen this same young man riding either an e-scooter or an e-bike on the same sidewalk without helmet multiple times. At one point, I told him that he cannot ride an e-bike or e-scooter on the sidewalk. While some users of these ‘e-vehicles’ do need better education on our traffic bylaws, this young man certainly is not in that category.

Open letter,
Colin, you are not the first to suggest the tram be reinstalled along its original route. It has come up multiple times over the years. However past city councils decided to build 15 homes over the original route along Railway, from Garry Street. City council was lambasted for allowing that to happen as it destroyed the route from being used as the future Richmond tram. The other route option that was removed was taking the tram down Railway Avenue to Britannia Shipyards. This would require 23 homes and the community gardens to be removed. Cities have learned that former rail lines make excellent transportation corridors, and in highly developed areas are the only option available. Both Richmond and Vancouver should keep these areas in reserve for that future purpose.

A spokesperson from the BC Ambulance Service would only confirm that they received a call at 8:57 a.m. on Friday and that “no one was transported to the hospital.” The News reported yesterday how the swimming pool at the centre closed Friday morning due to the medical emergency. A Richmond News reader called the newsroom to say that the morning swimming session was disrupted after he was asked to leave the pool by the facility staff. “It was a bit chaotic during that time and everyone in the pool had to get out immediately. I saw ambulances and a fire rescue team flying by while leaving the centre,” said the reader.
Outage caused by bird striking power line Alan Campbell
ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
A bird strike on a live power line caused a significant power outage in Steveston on Friday afternoon. Photos on social media indicate that the wire on No. 1 Road, between Chatham and Moncton streets, had detached and fallen onto a parked vehicle below. RCMP vehicles could be seen blocking off the section of the road, although it’s not clear if the wire was live at the time. A spokesperson for BC Hydro told the Richmond News that the outage was “caused by a bird striking one of our wires at about 3:10 pm yesterday. “All customers were restored by 6:50 pm. “We remind customers that a downed wire is an emergency and should they come across one they should stay back 10 metres and call 911.” The spokesperson added that people should always assume that a downed wire could be live.

This possible live wire was lying on a car in Steveston on Friday, after a bird struck a power line. @StevestonShips photo that the power went out for about 1,800 customers at around 3:10 p.m. due to a “bird on the wire.” According to BC Hydro, crews restored the power at around 6:45 p.m.

Protesters mar family-friendly drag queen event in park Valerie Leung
VLEUNG@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
“I have never been more afraid for my life and the lives of kids and others.” Bryan Bone was describing the moment when two of the protesters, both men, waded through a crowd of kids in a park in Hamilton Monday afternoon, knocking some of them aside, seemingly in an attempt to get to him. Prior to the incident, the protesters were seen waving placards with homophobic statements and a rainbow-coloured swaztika.
marred by the attendance of people protesting in what Bone could only describe as an “absolutely shocking and intimidating” manner.
He told how many of the protesters who heckled him showed up to the event carrying “intimidating, graphic, and awful signs about fascism...and Nazi stuff.”
He recalled to the Richmond News how two of the men started to walk towards him, through the kids, as he was still reading.
Wolfe tweeted how he was at the event with his daughter and how he had to stand up to the protesters.
“Some kids were knocked, one guy kept walking through the crowd of kids who were seated in front of me,” said Bone, adding that there were young toddlers in the crowd. “I don’t even remember reading the stories. I was just on autopilot, thinking what to do next in case it got violent.”
Bone, an art and learning resource teacher at MacNeill Secondary, was performing at the time under his drag persona Miss Gina Tonic, for the annual Drag Queen Storytime outside Hamilton Community Centre, something he’s been doing for 10 years in B.C. (four years in Richmond).
Bone decided to continue reading as the protesters took photos of him and yelled, but the final straw was when he noticed the angry group taking photos of the children.
The event was supposed to be a joyful kick-off to Richmond’s Pride Week but was

“The RCMP responded and, along with my neighbours, the event concluded safely. The pride presenter has been a friend of mine for nearly 30 years. Glad to be there to support him in person,” wrote Wolfe. Bone told how he has been teaching in Richmond for “quite a long time, and I’ve never experienced anything like this before.”
But the scary incident didn’t end with Bone’s last story.
What concerned Bone the most was the safety of the kids, his family and everyone at the event.
In order to protect Bone and the children, Bone’s parents, partner, staff, and the Mountie formed a “human shield.”
When asked if he will be performing for his other events this week, it was a for sure yes.

Judge urges mail thief Sing Tao kills print Fallen tree closes to make mom proud A serial mail thief who broke into multiple Richmond condo towers was sentenced to 420 days in jail, in addition to 18 months of probation. Kristopher Richard Mino appeared by video in Richmond Provincial Court on Friday to receive his sentence, after he had expressed regret for his actions to the court on Tuesday. Mino pleaded guilty on May 25, 2022 to a catalogue of charges which included breaking and entering, and stealing mail from 7031 Blundell Road, near Gilbert Road, and the Centre Pointe condominium complex on 8811 to 8871 Lansdowne Road, near Garden City Lands. Crown counsel and defence presented their arguments for Mino’s sentence on Tuesday, and the sentencing was adjourned to
today. In sentencing Mino, Judge Derek Mah asked Mino to make his mother and daughter proud. Mah took into account submissions from both sides, and decided that the sentence proposed by defence was “most appropriate in these circumstances.” While Mah considered Mino’s offences to be “very serious,” he questioned the effectiveness of a lengthier sentence. At the time of sentencing, Mino had already served 267 days in custody. As a part of his probation conditions, Mino is required to live at a treatment centre for a least six months after being released from custody. Mino is also ordered to pay a fine for driving while prohibited. —Vikki Hui/Richmond News

Sing Tao Daily, a 44-year-old Chinese-language media headquartered in Toronto with an office in Vancouver, announced on Monday that it will cease printing papers on Aug. 28. busy road
A giant tree branch came crashing down onto a busy Richmond road on Saturday evening, causing disruption to drivers. According to local resident Grant McMillan, the large section of tree fell onto Gilbert Road, just north of Francis Road at around 9 p.m. McMillan said that a crew from Richmond Fire-Rescue was on the scene within 15 minutes and closed off three lanes so it could assess the damage. He added that it wasn’t windy at all in the area that evening, noting that it was lucky that no vehicles or people were underneath. —Alan Campbell/News

Rebuilt animal shelter opens Bikers roll in to support autistic kids
Vikki Hui VHUI@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
Richmondites will check out the BC animal shelter on south of Steveston weekend.
finally get to SPCA’s rebuilt No. 5 Road, Highway, this
Vikki Hui VHUI@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
Mayor Malcolm Brodie, local politicians, and community members attended the opening ceremony of the Richmond Community Animal Shelter today, along with their furry companions. “We know that many animals are more than just pets to people, so it is essential that we have a safe and comforting environment for animals while we seek to rehome them,” said Brodie, as his dog Sophie eagerly tried to join him on stage. “This new shelter achieves that.” The shelter was previously run by the Regional Animal Protection Society (RAPS), before BC SPCA took over last year. The city began the $5.6 million rebuild and expansion in 2021. According to city spokesperson Clay Adams, the total cost of the project was $5.6 million, which came to around 30 per cent under the initial $8 million budget. The design of the shelter aims to minimize the stress on animals during their temporary stay, and it can house up to 17 dogs, 40 cats, and some small domestic animals such
Around 30 motorcyclists from Toronto rode into Sea Island on a sunny Saturday afternoon in support of a local non-profit’s fundraiser for autistic children and their families. Community members gathered at Pacific Autism Family Network’s (PAFN)’s Cessna Drive centre for an afternoon of family-friendly fun with teddy bear painting and performances by children in the community. The East Van Car Club also showed its support with a car display.
The local dignitaries came out with their pets to help open the rebuilt Richmond Animal Shelter. Vikki Hui photo as rabbits and guinea pigs. At one point, the Richmond shelter had even hosted a ferret. The new shelter is 6,180 square feet, which is 1,600 square feet larger than before. It boasts best practice features including isolation areas for sick and injured animals, separate housing areas for animals with behaviour concerns, and an outdoor fenced area for farm animals. Other highlights of the building include heated floors within kennels, Solatube lighting that ensures sunlight in kennels, and hygienic drain and cleaning systems.
A multipurpose room can also be found in the shelter, and BC SPCA is planning to coordinate community programs starting next year. A public art project is in the works as well, and city council recently reviewed the budget for the project. The new building also features artwork by students at Westwind Elementary and Burnett Secondary. The theme of the artwork is Furever Home, and speaks to BC SPCA’s efforts to “find safe and loving forever homes for dogs, cats and other small domestic animals” living at the shelter, reads the press release.
With thundering engines, bikers on Harley-Davidson motorcycles rode up to the entrance and kicked off the event. The Maple Riders had embarked on a cross-country tour to raise money in support of autistic children, and they presented PAFN with a donation generated through the tour. Kyle Nguyen, director of operations for PAFN, said that the fundraiser was “fantastic.” “It’s great to see, especially post COVID, with all the challenges that have happened, events like this happening - where we can really bring the communities together, and recognize that there is a population of individuals that are out there that we can help support and raise awareness,” he said. “It’s really about restarting community engagement that we’ve seen when we could do large events like this, and having a nice time in the sun as well.”
Richmond’s ‘Lego man’ recreates more gems Alan Campbell
ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
A Richmond resident is proudly showing off his latest Lego creation. Peter Grant has been wowing locals for years with his incredibly-detailed reproduction of heritage or iconic buildings from around the city. Grant often spends months sourcing tiny pieces of Lego from around the globe to make sure his creations are as close to the actual design as possible. Among his most recent ones are Abercrombie House, which was built in 1895, and can be found on the south dyke. Others include Goldie Harris house on No. 4 Road, which was built in 1912 (the real house, not the Lego version). Richmond resident Peter Grant has spent many years recreating some of the city’s most iconic and historic buildings out of Lego pieces that he sources from across the globe.
And last year Grant recreated Eldstrom house, which was built around 1912 on Finn Road by settlers from Finland.

Wills Variation – it’s about more than just money Introduction It is settled law in B.C. that a child or spouse of a deceased person is permitted to seek a variation of the deceased person’s Will, if that affected person believes that the Will does not provide them an adequate or fair portion of the deceased’s Estate. Is it all about money? Well, in my opinion, mostly it is not. Certainly, there are cases where the financial aspect is critical and an argument might be made that the “greed” factor (if I can put it that way) is in evidence. On the whole, though, it is not that simple. Wills variation cases involve families and the emotion factor in many cases is significant. Last month, reasons for judgment were released in a case called Pascuzzi v. Pascuzzi. Interestingly, the Court characterized the case as being “about many relationships, not just one relationship”. No mention was made about money. Facts The deceased met a woman in 1986. They had what the Court described as an “intense” relationship. The woman became pregnant and the Plaintiff was born in 1987. Though the parties were engaged at the time, their relationship did not last and they did not marry. The Plaintiff is their only child. The deceased and the Plaintiff enjoyed a good relationship after her birth but in 1989 the deceased entered a new relationship and he married in 1992. That year, his relationship with the Plaintiff deteriorated, after the deceased sent a letter to the Plaintiff ’s Mother, in which he felt that the Plaintiff did not want to see him any longer. He suggested that she not visit. That proved to be very difficult, emotionally, for the Plaintiff. What further complicated the Plaintiff ’s relationship with the deceased was that he had two children with his new wife, which obviously afforded him less time to be with the Plaintiff. The Plaintiff ’s evidence about this was that she never felt part of the deceased’s family, though she visited for Christmas, birthdays and other family events. Over the years, the Plaintiff cried many tears. In addition, the Plaintiff suffered sexual abuse at age 10 and a sexual assault at age 14. The deceased was not “there” for support when these events happened. He regretted it. Efforts were made by the deceased to repair the relationship as the deceased grew older. The Court recognized the circumstances of the deceased (his work demands and parenting demands in his new family). The Plaintiff was age 32 and married when, in 2019, the deceased died. Court’s Decision The Court felt that, looking back over the relationships, the deceased, his new wife and the Plaintiff all had some fault, as things stand at present. The deceased failed in the effort to be a parent in the years after he met his new wife. His lack of parenting skills and the Plaintiff ’s wounds suffered in her childhood made it difficult for the two of them to maintain a relationship. There were also circumstances beyond everyone’s control, as mentioned. As an adult, the Plaintiff better understood this. Under the Will, made in 1996, the Plaintiff was disinherited. She was bequeathed a monthly sum, which expired when the Plaintiff reached age 19. There was no other bequest to her. All the Estate was bequeathed to the deceased’s surviving wife. The Court, in reaching its decision, followed the clear law, which imposes a legal and moral obligation on a Will maker to provide for a child in their Will. While the deceased did not owe legal support to the Plaintiff, who was self-supporting, the Court found the deceased owed a moral support to her. It was noted by the Court that the deceased’s children and his wife’s children did not take part in the litigation and did not testify at Trial (though it was not clear that this had impact on the Court’s decision). The Estate was valued at $1.8 million and the Plaintiff was declared to be entitled to a 30% share. The Court took into account the surviving wife’s situation in ordering this. Conclusions This clearly was a case about relationships. The Plaintiff had, seemingly, overcome a difficult childhood and had built a successful career. Still, the Will was made in 1996, when she was age 9, and the deceased had been, in the last years of his life, considering providing for the Plaintiff. He should have made a new Will. Regardless, in my opinion this was a good legal decision under our law. It did not seem that the Plaintiff was simply “out for money” but perhaps was seeking some kind of reconciliation or resolution of her complex and unfortunate relationship with her Father. In my view, these cases are difficult for the family members. I suggest that most cases are not launched lightly, even though there are many cases being litigated across the Province. I suggest that these cases for the most part have a relationship element, perhaps an emotion element as well as a financial element. I would resist any conclusion that they are just about money.

ROSENKE, Friedrich Eduard (Fred) March 28, 1936 - July 21, 2022 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Dad and Opa. He will be sadly missed yet joyfully celebrated. He was born in Siarzewo, Poland into a German Christian farming community. In the winter of 1945, as the Russian army approached, the family fled to East Germany by horse and wagon. In July 1951, the Rosenke family immigrated to Canada, settling in Chilliwack, BC to start a new life. From there he moved to Richmond, BC, which he proudly called home for 51 years. He is predeceased by Erna, his wife of 40 years, his parents, Rudolf and Olga, his brothers, Erhard, Johann and Rudolf and sister, Frieda. He leaves behind his children: Lisa (Ralph), Erwin, Eddie, Andrea (Gary); grandson, Jackson and siblings Ilse, Gustav, Olga, Horst, Helga and Sigrid. He was the most kind and generous of men and always put his family’s needs before his own. He worked as a plumber/pipe fitter until his retirement in 1996. His favourite past times were long nature walks, kayaking and driving around the Fraser River with a warm coffee. He was always well informed about current events and had a passion for history and geography. A Celebration of Life will be held on August 2, 2022 at 1:30pm, Trinity Lutheran Church 7100 Granville Avenue, Richmond BC. Aufwiedersehen lieber Papa! Blessed are those who die in the Lord.
KRULL, Elsie 1934 - 2022 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Elsie Krull (nee: Michaelchuk). She passed away on July 7, 2022, at Richmond General Hospital at the age of 87. She was born in Peno, Alberta, in 1934 but resided in Richmond for the majority of her life. Elsie was the oldest of four children. Elsie was a loving mother, grandmother, and a gentle soul. Her greatest love was her two granddaughters Emily and Rachel.
She is survived by her daughter Marion, granddaughters Emily and Rachel, her sister Frances and brother Alden. She was predeceased by her husband Nick and brother Lawrence. Elsie will be greatly missed by all who knew her and loved her. Thank you to the doctors and nurses at Richmond General Hospital for all their care and compassion over the years.
Fond memories linger every day, Remembrance keeps them near.
