Whilethere’snoquestiontheseactions garner attention, some would say they do nothing to stop climate change. Rather, they just alienate peopleastheysit idling in theircars. Then, again, some wouldsay Rosa Parks’ action only fueled racial tensions and inspired abacklash from whitesupremacists. So should she not have done it? Point being, it’satough call. Idoubt even the judge who is about to decide the fate of the three accused environmentalists would disagree we’re facing aclimate emergency. But are we at apoint where the situationissodire and optionssolimited, these kinds of actions are justified? As one of the co-accused said, he has tried otherways to raiseawareness about the climate emergency, including staging a 13-day hunger strike, but nothing hashad an effect. Idobelieve the climate situation is dire, but Ialso believe there are legal, and probably more effective, tools for change. To believe otherwise is just toodepressing. Regardless, to saddle these people with acriminal record and possibly jail time, I couldn’tdo—even if that’s the law. Again, why I’dmake aterrible judge. thelaw justified? Edmonds

Thereare many reasons why Iwould make aterrible judge —alack of knowl edge aboutthe lawisjustone of them. Even more damning would be my inability to grapple with that trickydistinction between what’sjust and what’slegal. It was certainly against the law for Rosa Parks to refuse to go to the back of the bus in 1955 Montgomery, Ala. But was it just that she be chargedand convicted for doing so? Regardless of the judge’s own beliefs, did he have much choicebut to convict her? After all, he was presiding over “a court of law,not acourtofjustice,”asOliver Wendell Holmes Jr.(aU.S.Supreme Court judge himself)said about ahundred years ago. Holmes Jr.(1841-1935) was known for his pithy and candid insights. This issue of doing the wrong thing for the right reason (or at least illegalthing) cameupinthe newsroom this week as we discussed acase playing out in Richmond Provincial Courtwhere three environmentalists are being tried for mischief. Dear Editor, Re: “Protest at Drag Queen Storytime,” Letters,Aug. 4
Raymond Pare RICHMOND Dear Editor, With Richmond’sChinese residents making up over 50 per cent of the population, it’sdisappointing, yet not surprising, there are no Chinese-Canadiancandidates running for mayor in this year’smunicipal election. It wouldbeadifficulttask for any Chinese-Canadian to become partofthe political elite. This has less to do with discrimination and more about our rich history of subservience in Western society.Welack atradition of highprofile political or corporate leaders to motivate our youth. The first influx ofChinese migrants were predominantlypoor, illiterate peasants fleeing famine, civil strife and brutal regimes. To survive these turbulent times one learned to stay silent, work hard and keep alow profile. Such qualities would also serve them well in aforeign and hostile land where these lessons were passed on to successivegenerations to the present. Unfortunately these compliant attributes rarely ignite our passions, inspiring us to stand up and speak out. Over the years afew “embers” have flickered but were quicklydoused. Fromchildhood, we are psychologically browbeaten into studying industriously and succeeding quietly while westernculture heap praiseonthe loud and proud. Our over-emphasis on academics and status is acatch-22: Asian students graduate from top universities with some of the highest gradesbut many lack the interpersonal skills crucial forleadership roles. Except for afew exceptional exceptions, weare content to be in the background, loyal employees toiling diligently to make their mainly “white male” bosses look good. Recall our rich historyofsubservience, many of us are more comfortable taking orders than giving them. In big business and politics, amagnetic personality is just as important as intelligence in leading amajor organization or becoming mayor in alarge city Perhaps alack of charisma is one reason we find it so difficult to shatter that political glass ceiling, but we sure can polish it.
Ihave to express some sympathy to English teachers. The lack of under standing of the word fascism along with the vulgar use of the word for transsexuals must have them rolling over in their graves. Whatawackadoodle world we are living in. Raising awareness about the climate crisis versusupholding the ruleoflaw were the issues laid out in front of a judge Monday as three protesters faced charges of blocking traffic close to YVR in Octoberlastyear. All three,Donna Clark, Susan Bibbings and James Darling, have pleaded guilty to mischief charges. But Bibbings faces one more count for taking partinanother protest in West Vancouver in June. The Crown prosecutor, El len Leno, is asking for her to be sentenced to aweek in jail. Defence lawyer,Elisabeth Strain, was asking for conditional sentences for all three, saying acriminal record would impede their paid and volunteer work. Strain outlined how Bibbings, who livesinWest Vancouver, suffers from anxiety due to the climate crisis, leading her to take part in the protests. But the Crownargued that Bibbings requires “specific deterrence” because she took partinthe West Vancouver protest in June even while her first charge in Richmond wasbeforethe courts. This shouldbe“reflected in the sentence imposed,” which should be seven-day in jail, according to Leno. In the secondprotest, Bibbings allegedly glued her hand to the road near the Horseshoe Bay FerryTerminal. Leno said conditional sentencesfor otherprotesters have notdeterred fur ther protests, someofwhich have shut down public infrastructure.

This point was reiterated by Coun. Harold Steves, who estimated the propertywould be worth $1 billion if it were pulled out of the ALR and rezoned, as industrial land is selling at $7 million per acre.
Instead, inwhat would seem counter intuitive, the ALC, an agency tasked with preserving farmland, suggested Montrose apply to the city to have it pulled out of the ALR, according to Montrose president Michael Kennedy, who cited letters from the ALC dating backto2015and 2020. But afirm “no” —a unanimous decision from city council —has stopped that move in its tracks. Now Montrose’sonly hope is if the province amends its regulations to allow them to continue operating until 2055. The ultimate decision lies with the MinistryofAgriculture, which could change the regulations to allow Montrose an extension on its landfill operations. This would avoid the need to pull the land out of the ALR. Kennedy told Richmond city council the MinistryofAgriculture is apparently looking at a“range of options,” but the uncertainty around what their decision will be and when it will be made leaves them few choices, and most likely, they will shut down the landfill.
Since Montrose’spermit was issued, the ALC regulations have changed to prohibit construction waste in the ALR. Hence, when they asked the ALC to extend the permit to 2055 so it could build the recycling facility on the property, they were turned down. Montrose was planning to spend $50 to $100 million to build six material recovery facilities on the property, but this investment wouldn’tpay off if their permit wasn’textended the extra 20 years.
There are few places in the Lower Mainland to take demolitionwaste —Montrose is one, and the Vancouver Landfill in Delta is another, but that is scheduled to close in 2037. Another option is to take demolition waste to facilities in Washington State
In an extensive reporttocity council, city staff recommended they deny the ALR exclusion application as it goes against its farming policies of encouraging agricultural production and maintainingcurrent farmland boundaries. City staff cautioned that pulling the land out of the ALR could cause more farmland speculation, increase pressure to exclude other ALR properties, and increase the likelihood of this propertybecoming industrial after the recycling and landfill operation shut down. Furthermore, they say aproposed compensation package from Montrose Industries of $3.25 million is “insignificant compared to the potential tenfold increase in the site value that could be realized.”
Montrose Industries (the parent company aste), which owns multiple proper east Richmond, recently asked city supportits request to pull a150parcel out of the Agricultural Land (ALR) so they couldbuild alargeconstruction demolition recycling fafacility would reduce construction waste by 60 to 70 per cent, accordingto the company City council turned them down but not before praisingthe company for its work and blaming the province for puttingitina bind thatmay force it to close. Caught in regulatoryred tape Montrose’snon-farm-use permit from the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) to use the property as alandfill ends in 2035, but because they haven’tbeen able to build the recycling facilities —something they wanted in place already three years ago —their landfill is now almost at capacity.
Both Couns. Andy Hobbs and Bill McNulty placed the responsibility of the bind Montrose finds itself in on the province.
“I think the province has an issue to deal with… one of their own creation,” Hobbs said, adding, “it’sincumbentonthem to find asolution that works best.”
“As far as I’m concerned, if the government did remove this land out of the ALR, all hell is going to break loose,” Steves said. In fact, Steves pointed outCountry Mead owsGolf Course, also in the ALR, used to be acar demolition site, now it’sa golf course, and perhaps later, itwill returnto farming.

The first rainbow crosswalk has been installedataRichmond school, Homma elemen tary, and another will soon be coming to MacNeill secondary. Bryan Bone, ateacher at MacNeill secondary, said the rainbow crosswalk idea at his school was the result of brainstorming by the “Rainbow Club”tocreatealegacy project. Statistics Canada finds that LGBTQ youth have higher rates of poor mentalhealth, homelessness, suicide, substance use, bullying, unemployment and abuse, Bone said, something thatconcerned his students enough to push for the Rainbow Crosswalks. These issuesare even higher for LGBTQ youth of colour, Bone noted, so the MacNeill rainbow crosswalk will include brown and blackstripes. “(My students) shared that welcoming staff, students, families and the community with arainbow crosswalk sends apowerful message that our school is asafe spacethat celebrates diversity,” Bone explained “Their hope is that, over time, thiswill benefitfuture generations of LGBTQ+ kids who won’thave to live in fear at home or in the community.”
Rainbow crosswalks are school-based initiatives, explained school board chair Sandra Nixon. The school district’sSexualOrientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) committee has developed a process andguidelines for schools that want to install them. Nixonsaid she’s“thrilled” schools are taking the initiative to install rainbow crosswalks “as aclear and visible sign of welcome, support and inclusivity for all students, families and staff, in particular those who identify as 2SLGBT+.” Bone said recent “troubling hateful aggression” towards the LGBTQ community in Richmond is areminder that “we must continue to be on guard against prejudice and discrim ination.”
At arecent drag queensto rytime in Hamilton, Bone was in his character of Miss Gina Tonic when agroup of protesters heckled him and held signs with rainbow swastikas. Thepolice were calledwhile participants formed acircle around him to protect him from theprotesters. “Symbols of love, as wellas celebrations of diversity and inclusionare what our schools and communitiesneed, not hatred and grossly outdated prejudices,” Bone said.

Ahistorical researcher,Dellis Cleland, spoke to more than ahundred people in 1972 to ask them about their memories of berrypicking in Richmond.
It’sprime blueberryseason in Richmond now,but the city’sfirst inhabitants, the First Nations, and early settlers had along historyofforaging and cultivating awide variety of berries in the island city Blueberries were apparently the most popular berries on Lulu Island already in the late 1800s, something Richmond is still renowned for In the early1900s,there appeared to be two types of blueberries —tiny tartones that grew in bunches, and larger ones that grew as single berries and were better in desserts. But it was only one of adozen berries found in what would later be called the Township of Richmond.
Cleland notes that strawberryfestivals were the “highlight of early summer”and were “interwoven throughoutthe social life of the area.”
Strawberryfestivals were held by different or ganizations —atchurches and at the Orange Hall in Steveston. While the annualOrange Hall Strawberry Festival “is hostedby men of the lodges,” Cleland notes “Many are the crates hulledbythe women of Richmond in the name of neighborliness andhospitality.”
Today,Richmond berries continue to sold far and wide. In 2016, there were almost 2,000 acres of farmland in Richmond producing cranberries. Cranberriesand blueberries together make up more than 60 per cent of Richmond’scrop total.

The report“Berrying in Richmond —Pleasure or Profit” can be found in the City of Richmond’sArchives. Loganberries have fallen off the popular radar, but in the early 1900s, they were a highly sought-after berry. But when the depressionhit in the 1930s, the price of loganberries hit rock bottom one cent apound —sotwo Richmondites set about making wine from the then-cheap but popular berry. Loganberrywine made in Richmond was shipped as far away as Saskatchewan. McKinney’swinery, locatedatNo. 2 Road and Steveston Highway, made Mar tina Wine. They stored about 100,000 gallons in barrels bought from Sweeney’s Cooperage, located under the Granville Street Bridge. George W. Rathburnalso established a wineryatthe same time, drawing on his own 40 acres of loganberries on Blundell Road betweenSt. Albans and GardenCity Road. Rathburnsold his wine locally, bringing customers in from Vancouver In addition to loganberries and blueber ries, there were cranberries, huckleberries, salmonberries, three kinds of currants black, red and white —strawberriesand raspberries. Cultures converged in berryseason Berrieswere pickedbyIndigenous people as well as European and Chinese settlers. Some Richmond residents recalled,as told to Cleland, Indigenous people coming along the Fraser River in canoes to pick berries. They would then trade them with settlers forclothing Other people interviewed by Cleland recalled Chinese berrypickers, wearing straw hats, walking down GardenCity Road with twin baskets “weightedover their shoulders” full of berries. Bog fires were blamed on these Chinese pickers, but there was no evidence of fires being deliberately set. In fact, fires were believed to “ensure arenewedcrop of berriesthe next year,” Cleland notes. The Chinese also used blueberries to make dye, according to interviewees.
During the Second World War, students whoworked as berrypickers were paid four to six cents apound. Strawberries were grown in Richmond’s “rich clay soil” starting from the early 1900s and were hauled to markets in Vancouver overthe two connecting bridges in wagons, cars and even in milk vans run by VanDusen and Hawke, Cleland writes.
In west Richmond, Terra Nova was full of crab apple trees before 1900, but what most people interviewed by Clelandrecalled werethe blackberries in the area Small, sweet ones grew alongthe dykes and ditches—the historian notes there were many “hand made dykes” in Terra Novaatthis time which were breached“as the moon’spullstrengthened.” Himalayans tasty but‘apest’ Later,Evergreen and the invasive Himalayan blackberryvarieties came along. While blackberries are considered anuisance —aninvasive species —today, this is not new In fact, Clelandnotes on No. 7Road and Westminster Highway,“the blackberries left the ditches and crossedtothe grain fields to be fought as apest.” But they were still considered delicious, and were canned, jellied, jammed and spiced and “proved apopular pie for threshing gangs at fall farm harvesting,” Cleland notes Cleland wrote in 1972 that it’snoaccident that “Richmondisknown as the gar den of Vancouver” and its cranberries, blueberries and strawberries “feedhungryCanadians.”

Treasures are hidden all around Richmond —and all you need to findthem is aphone, some GPS coor dinates and cryptic clues. Sarah and Edward Glen and daughters Lindsey and Carys have been geocaching for around eight years, and they recently completed the City of Richmond’sGeoTour by finding all 50 caches.
“You can untie the rope and then the water bottle will go down and you can push out the container and then look inside and see if there’stoys,” she said. The pulley-system cache is one of the many creative caches designed by volun teer geocachers who col laborated with the city for the challenge, said Kenny And after two quest-filled years, the Glens have fi nally found them all. Geocaching numbers The Glens are not the only ones bitten by the geocaching bug.
Family explores Richmondthrough geocaching
For the uninitiated, geocaching is essentially a scavenger hunt. Using just their phones, or GPS devices for the old-fashioned, geocachers can search for hidden containers based on GPS coordinates and clues. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit two years ago, the Glens decided it was time to embark on Richmond’sGeoTour “Wefelt like we had (more) time. And when we had the chance to go out and do it as afamily, it was the perfect opportunity,” explained Lindsey The GeoTour has two quests —the Geo-Quest and Canada 150. Each cache container has a logbook and asecret keyword. Once the participant collects all 50 keywords, they can redeem amedallion from Richmond Nature Park. Caching in on nature According to Richard Kenny, community facilities programmer of Richmond Nature Park, the challenge was introduced in December 2014 to engage Richmondites who were already on their phones and encourage them to connect with nature. It is also the perfect way to discover hidden gems, which is exactly what happened when the Glens took on the challenge. “It’sina lot of parks and trails around Richmond places that we had actually never been before. And I’ve lived here since Iwas four years old,” said Sarah. Another aspect of geocaching is the treasure trove of tradable items one might find in acache container “You get motivated be cause you can exchange and find things,” said Lindsey, referring to the tradable items that geo cachers sometimes leave in caches. “Sometimes there are really cool toys you can get,” said Carys. Creative cache design One of Carys’ most mem orable cache was one that was in awater bottle on top of abranch.

Richmondites who want to get started in geocaching can visit Kenny and his team at Richmond Nature Park, or the City of Richmond’sbooth at the 18th GeoWoodstock, the world’slargest geocache event, in Abbotsford this weekend. And you might just run into the Glens during your quests, as they are already planning their next adventure. “We’ll get our geocaches up and running hopefully this fall,” said Sarah. “And everywhere we go, Carys is usually one to say,‘Is there ageocachehere?’ And so Edward will get out his phone and look it up, and sure enough, there usually is.” today. 604-273-4221

Sarah: Don’tlet the ‘muggles’ see Data from the city of Richmond shows that more than 3,000 accounts were created to participate in the GeoTour between 2014 and 2020, and participants came from 44 countries. By June of 2020, 178 accounts had managed to complete the challenge. According to Kenny, enthusiasts have hidden “hundreds and hundreds” more geocaches all over the city, waiting for other geocachers to discover them. In order for others in the community to enjoy these caches and prevent the uninitiatedfrom messing with them, there’s one rule that’sespecially important: “You don’tlet the ‘muggles’ see when you’re discovering the cache. Just keep it kind of hidden and safe for everybody to find,” said Sarah.
Steveston’s“half-forgot ten” mini-castle wasn’tbuilt for humans. Rather, itwas built for the local swans in the city Talk about royalty Richmond resident Leighton Matthews postedonhis Twitteraccount@Steveston Ships to ask what the odd, half-sunken castle was and what it was doing in the water nearthe Steveston Harbour The structure, at the southeast end of Steveston Har bour, was built by aformer maintenance employee several yearsago, according to Stephen Barnett, executive assistant at the Steveston Harbour Author ity (SHA). “This is actually the first time in along timethat someone has mentioned the little castle, Ithink it was half-forgotten,” he said. “It’sa mini castle that was built justfor fun. The idea was to anchor it out in the channel and seeifany of the swans in the area would use it as alittle house.” Unfortunately, the swans didn’tseemtoever take up residence. The “castle” has since tipped over due to aprob lem with the flotationdevices underneath it, explained Barnett.
