Last week’s editorialsuggested the protestors at the Richmond courthouse were on trialbecause they had done “the wrong thing for the right reason.” Iwould argue that both the actions andthe stated reasons de servescrutiny Where did the money come from to purchase the commercially-produced signs held up to the cameras? Who was paying for the defence lawyers, who in all likelihood had coached their clients in how to elicit the maximum amount of sympathyfrom the judge? Behind the scenes, there are well-funded organizations encouraging and supporting the protest actions. The organization now calling itself “SaveOld Growth” (SOG)isfederally incorporatedasnon-profit under the name “Eco-Mobilization Canada.” It both solicitsdonations through its website and receives funding from the US-based Climate Emergency Fund. Previously protesting as “Extinction Rebellion,” SOG has rebranded under the old growthissue in the hopes of creating a “much-needed win for the environmentalmovement” and spurring more climate action. (What they don’t say is that “more action” also means “more donations.”) Climate change and old growth are both hot-button topics right now,but the science linkingthe two is not black and white. Whether logging raises or lowers carbon emissions over the long run depends on many different things. Climate science is complex, as are human motivations. While the three protesters in courtnodoubt strongly believe in their cause, their conviction alonedoes not automaticallyentitle them to claim theirdemandsare “right.”

Fortunately, noone died. But, for this, the law, not justice, has remedies it can impose on those continuing to place the public at risk. Billingsand theothers understood the situation and the inherent risks and consequences. Ibelieve that the public’stolerance for these types of protests has diminished.

Dear Editor, My 92-year-old dad and Iwanttothank everyone who helped him after he fell off his wheelchair at the Westminster Highway crosswalk near the Bay on Friday,Aug. 12. Twopeople called 911 right away and stayed with us until first responders ar rived.Others offered supportand helpedtomake him comfortable while he was on theground.

The example of Rosa Parks’ actions and the actions of the Extinction Rebellion are vastlydifferent. Rosa Parks did not create any additional public risk but she was subject to the law of the times. However, the actions of the Extinction Rebellion, by blocking aYVR major intersection, access to the Horseshoe Bay Ferryterminal, and the northbound lane of the Massey Tunnel did create asignificant publicrisk.

Who is Eco-Mobilization Canada(Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act)? Do they get grants fromthe Canadian government for these protests? How is the group financed? Abigger storymay lie in the details.

An injured lifeguard at aRichmond community pool waited for at least almost four hours before paramedics arrived this past weekend. Richmond resident SandraHerbertposted on Facebook thataninjured lifeguardhad been “lying on the pavement for over two hours” waiting for an ambulance at Richmond’sSouth Armpool. She said atent had been placed above him, presumably to shade him from the sun. “It must be serious enough thatthey can’t move theperson,” said Herbert. She toldthe Richmond News that the lifeguard was injured around 1p.m. andby the time herparty left the area around 4:30 p.m. no ambulances or paramedics had shown up BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) confirmed the lifeguard was takentohospital but, due to privacy reasons, it could not reveal details of theinjury.

The city tweeted on Monday morning that it was ready to open the beaches once more to the public, following the leak.

The Richmond News reported on the weekend how the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) and Steveston Harbour Authority (SHA) found and stopped the source of a“significant diesel leak” in the harbour

The bilge is the lowest inner partofa ship designed to collect excess water CCG and SHA found the vessel on Thursday and stopped more pollutants from entering the water by turning off and removing the bilge pump, which was pumping excess water and leaked diesel —into the harbour

According to Imbeau, CCG received areportofa diesel smell and sheen near GarryPoint Park around 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday,Aug. 10. During Thursday and Friday,CCG cleaned up more than 100 litres of spilled diesel with absorbent pads and booms. Beaches at GarryPoint Park were closed on Friday —the day the City of Richmond was informed —and Richmondites were then advised to stay back from shorelines, keep pets away from the water, and avoid swimming.

The leak had come from avessel in the area, where aline in the engine room was spilling diesel into the vessel’sbilge “at afast rate,” said Michelle Imbeau, CCG spokesperson.

“Weknow it’sstressful when someone who needsanambulance is waiting for one and we apologize for any delay,” said aspokes person from BCEHS. According to BCEHS, ambulanceresponse times can varyand are basedon“theacuity of the patient,” with priority given to people with life-threatening symptoms including car diac arrest, chest pain, breathing difficulties and severe bleeding or unconsciousness. Patients who are considered “not extremely time-critical”are oftenadvised, if it’ssafe, to use other transportation methods with family or friends. Troy Clifford, president of the Ambulance Paramedics of British Columbia, told Casta net thepast weekendwas tough for BCEHS paramedics, adding that it was probably their “worst weekend” on record. He said that many communities in B.C. are being left without ambulancesbecause there are no paramedics to staff them The City of Richmond said its employee was “kept comfortable with shelter, water and first aid” while waiting for an ambulance.

The BCGEU contract ended March31 but negotiations for anew one, initiated already in February, stalled on April6 Ninety-five per cent of members voted to supportjob action on June 22 and, on Friday, the union issued a72-hour strike notice. The government is offering an 11-per-cent wage increase over three years, but the unionisarguing that with inflation so high, this increase should be higher The last wage hike was two per cent in April 2021, Smith noted, but inflation has risen dramatically sincethen. “(Ourmembers)have been losing ground this entire year,” she said. This is why the union isn’tjust asking for higher wages, they want protection against inflation, which is a“cost of living adjustment” built into the contract. To retain workers in the public sector, wages need to keep up, Smith said, noting an ad she saw for adishwasher in Whistler was offering $35/hour plus tips. In contrast, B.C. wildland fire fighters earn$24 per hour, according to Smith. Ian Tostenson, CEO of the BC Restaurant and Foodservice Association, estimated restaurants will run out of liquor within a week as they get all imported beer, wine and spirits from government liquor stores. Some B.C. manufacturers, however, can deliver directly to wholesale customers, according to the BC Liquor Distribution Branch. BCGEU has 85,000 members, but those affected by the current job action are provincial government employees, totalling 33,000.

This is the first action announced by the BC General Employees Union (BCGEU —formerly, the BC Government Employees’ &Service Union) after an overwhelming majority of its members voted in favour of striking.

While BCGEU president Stephanie Smith, aRichmondresident, said the union wants astrike that is “thoughtful” and “impactful,” they weighed the fact liquor sales are a “hugerevenue source” for the government.

“Strikesbydefinition are meanttocause heartburnfor the employer and that’sone of the things we took into consideration,” she added. Four distribution centres across the province are being picketed —inRichmond, Delta, Victoria and Kamloops. How long the strike continues is “up to the employer,” Smith said, and, if needed, strikes will escalate into other areas.

BCGEU members currently engaged in job action include those working in sher iff and correctional services, wildland fire fighters, social workers as well as liquor and cannabis retail workers. Those sectors deemed essential workers, however, won’tbeallowed to go on strike, but will take partinother actions like button-wearing campaigns,Smith explained.

Picket lines were set up at the Richmond Cannabis Distribution Centre on Monday afternoon as the union representing its workers pushesfor higher wages and protection against inflation.

“If we lose this tree,it’sanexample of the city’sinability to save its history,”Stickler toldthe Richmond News “It’sbeen here longer than any of the residents,” said Wendy Gillespie, who lives two houses down from the tree and has a view of its gloryfrom her frontdeck. Gillespie is also concerned about the wildlife that depends on the tree andother growth on the property, onthe 3000-block of Broadway Street near GarryPointPark. She has written to mayor and council about her concerns for the trees on the property Bauer was aSteveston fisherman and academic who lived on the property for much of his life. The house was originally occupied by aJapanese family, the Otsu family, according to Butch Sakamoto,a friend of Bauer. The Otsuswere interned during the Second World Warand this is when theBauersmoved in. Sakamoto said the tree was planted when the Japanese family lived there, so it must pre-date the Second World War. Because the property is already zoned for three houses, the current owner doesn’t have to rezone the property, rather just subdivide it, something that doesn’trequire city council approval. This process is currently going through city hall. The City of Richmond’stree policy was amended by city council earlierthis year in an efforttoprotect “significant trees,” those that are 36 inches or greater in diameter Sakamoto, however, said the property has been neglected for some time and he’s concerned the tree —which has about half adozen large trunks rather than one large trunk —isinbad shape, rotting in the middle where leaves and other debris have falleninto over the years. Because the subdivision process, including evaluating any tree preservation possibilities, is currentlyunderway,”it is premature to discuss or even speculateonany impact to trees at this time,” city spokesper son Clay Adams told the News The developerthat applied in May to subdivide the property is Stockholm (Garry Point) Development Ltd. 18 &25, 2022 Aberdeen Centre (604) 276-8378 Richmond Centre (604)370-3376 E GIVEA

Followinguponanoise complaint in November 2020,Richmond RCMP claim they found evidence of an illegal gaming house on General CurrieRoad. While officers were talking to the property owner, they allege they saw two large casino tables, poker chips and two men sitting at the poker table. The RCMP then executed asearch warrant and alleg edly found severalcasino tables, chips and cards. They also allege they found gaming transaction ledgers, Canadian curren cy rolled up with ketamine (also knownasSpecialKor Kit Kat), 21.5 gramsofketamine,18grams of methamphetamine,80MDMA (ecstasy) pills as well as drug paraphernalia and packaging material After arresting Xin Zhuang for being in an illegal gaming house, they seized the money, intotal, $4,267. On July 22, Zhuang filed a dispute overthe money So, on Aug.10, the director of the civil forfeiture office fileda claim in B.C SupremeCourtagainst him, saying the money should be turned over to the province because it was the proceeds of illegal activity The civil forfeitureoffice cited three reasons for keeping the money. They claim that the money was found in an illegal gaming house, that it was the proceeds of crimeand that afailure to declare taxable income occurred. The property ownerwas originally charged with two counts of runningabetting or gaming house, but these charges were stayed on June 29 None of the civil forfeiture claims have beenproven in court.

Meanwhile, agroup of Canadianswith HongKong ties have written an open letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and For eignAffairs Minister Melanie Joly to show their discontent regarding the Hong Kong government’sactions. “It is appallingthat aCanadian citizen exercisinghis freedom of expressionand freedom of association in Canada, with his rightsand freedomentrusted by our constitution, could be charged and wanted by a foreign government,” reads theletter Being on Hong Kong’swantedlist has “serious andunpredictable implications” for Ho and his family members, according to the aforementioned group’sspokesper sons Bill Chu and TheklaLit.

However,Hotold the Richmond News that it was asurprisetofind out he was wanted by the HKSB, although he is not too worried and actually wants to “thank” the security bureau forit. “I neverreceived any notificationsdirectly by the Hong Kong government, but for them to put my name on that list means people in Hong Kong and internationally willknow what we are doing,” said Ho He added that, becausethe city’s government has tight control of the media, it is difficult for localpublications to write anything related to democracy without punishment.

“The Security Bureau appeals to the public to disassociate themselves from individuals contravening the Hong KongNational Security Law,and theillegal activities those individuals organized, so as to avoidbear ing anyunnecessary legal risks.”

“The government basicallyvolunteered themselves to announce that we are fightingfor political democracy.”

“While Victor is relatively safe in Canada, we are concerned for his safety were he to traveltocountriesthat haveextradition agreements with Hong Kong and China,” they said. Canada suspended its extradition agreement with Hong Kong shortly after the National Security Law was put in place, which is areassurance forthe group.

ARichmond resident and former editor of aChinese-language newspaper was placed on the Hong Kong Security Bureau’s (HKSB) wanted list earlierthismonth. Former SingTao editorVictor Ho was one of three activists placed on the list with the HKSB announcing in anews release that it “severely condemns” them for forming a “Hong Kong Parliament” overseasand subversion under the National Security Law. The National Security Law was imposed on Hong Kong by Beijing in response to pro-democracy protests in 2019. According to the Chinese government, people foundtohave fallen foul of the law “shall be sentenced to life imprisonment or fixed-termimprisonment” foradetermined number of years. HKSB made the announcement shortly after Ho and other activistsjoined anews conference in Toronto on July27toreveal the establishment of acommitteefor aHong Kong “parliament in exile” that would go against Beijing’scrackdown on political freedom. “On the basis of Article 37 of the NationalSecurity Law,Police shall spare no efforts in pursuing the cases in accordance with the law in order to bring the offenders to justice,” reads the HKSB news release.

Goto Vote has also been involved in combatting anti-Asian hate and racism. Lee pointed out this is an important reason to be involved in the municipal elections, especially as racism has risen during the pandemic. But there are also many other local issues that local politicians make decisions on, he added. “(It) makes adifference on the determination around investments in the community, like community centres and parks, the education of your children, safety on the streets, supportprograms for seniors and elderly parents and grandparents, transportation issues, housing issues as we need to create more supply,” Lee said. The new Goodco bar on Imperial Landing in Steveston is upsetting acouple of nearby residents residents complain about new Steveston bar

After atwo-yearhiatus, the Steveston Dragon Boat Festival is finally returning.

“The Province… does not consult with the public or ask for aCity Council resolution for primaryfood establishments that offer basic or standard operating liquor service hours up to midnight,” explained Adams. If abusiness wants to serve alcohol beyond the standard hours, it will have to go through acouncil-approved public consultation process. Apartfromthe food licence, arestaurant also has to jump through severalhurdles to set up shop in Richmond. “When abusiness applies for a(business) licence as arestaurant, the City checks with Zoning regulations to ensure it permits a restaurant,”said Adams. City staffwill also check with Building Approvals, whichissues the permits and approves locations for restaurants. If everything checksout, the city will then check with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH)tomakesure the restaurant meets all of the health and safety requirements. Once VCH gives the thumbs up, the restaurant is “good to go. ”

Richmond

The event is taking place at Steveston’s Imperial Landing, with 75 teams and about 2,000 paddlers facing off on the Fraser River on Saturday,Aug. 20. The race registrar opens at 7:30 a.m. with races starting at 9a.m.

Steveston resident Craig Franzen was taken by surprise when he came back from aholidayand found abustling new restaurant in his neighbourhood With acapacity of 250 seats and an 80-person patio, Franzen became concerned about the scale of the Good Co. bar at Imperial Landing. He was also worried aboutthe lateopening hours (Good Co. closes at midnight) and thelack of provision for additional parking, as parking has always beendifficult forvisitors to the area. “Without additional explanation, this would seem to be averyirresponsible decision that likely will have averynegative impact on the residentsand property values of the area,” said Franzen. And he is not alone. City spokesperson Clay Adams confirmed to Richmond News that another resident had recently voiced concerns about the eatery, just aweek after itsopening. “Wehave advised that City staffwill look into alleged noise concerns, as wellasthe parking of deliverytrucks. Should those concerns be validated, we willcertainly work withthe owners to address them,” said Adams. For Franzen, the bigger question lies in the fact that the city never notified nearby owners “directly” and gave them details about the new business. So how does it work? According to Adams, Good Co. has aFood Primary Liquor Licence issued by the province. The licence allows the bar to serve liquor with meals between 9a.m and midnight.
