Yes, my son struggled with addiction, but he was so much more than an addict. He was an artist, an empath, agentle, compassionate soul. He gave me joy every day despite the dark times. Just two days before he died, he made abatch of Rice Krispie squares. The day before he died, we were laughing over a video about aschool teacher who wore the same suit in his official photo for 27 years. For almost 26 years, we laughed and joked and talked and cried together.
The operation was successful and I’m eternally grateful. But while such remarkable resources were put into rehabilitaing his knee, the injurythat was actually killing him was left untreated.
So, back to my anger —infact, some days, it’sclose to rage. Where were the eight specialists treating his mental health? My son, along with everyother person struggling with addiction, deserved longterm, intensive treatment with proper follow-up. Even aphone call everyfew days from his “mental-health team” would have gone along way Igave him the best life Icould, allowing him to live at home even while some advised me to kick him out. But one parent can only do so much. This is asystemic problem that requires systemic solutions.
Like everyone struggling with addiction, my precious son was worth fighting for and Idid fight for him. Ispent years making phone calls, driving him to appointments, sometimes to the hospital, sometimes to treatment, begging for help.
There are no words to describe amother’sgrief from losing achild. In fact, it’ssuch ahorrific thought that the English language doesn’thave aword to name aparent whose child has died.
Just afew months ago, Michael was with me when Istopped at the BC Liquor Store to buy my clean, government-regulated supply of beer, adrink Ican imbibe knowing it won’tkill me. Michael looked around the liquor store, and the hypocrisy dawned on him, that I can buy my safe drug of choice, alcohol, but he can’tbuy asafe supply of his drug of choice. And then the day came, July 15, when he bought his drug of choice, and, like so many of us who pour aglass of wine or beer, heprepared his syringe. But someone up the supply chain had decided to cut the product to make alittle more money and added carfentanil, fentanyl and benzodiazipines to the baggie they sold to him. And that was it. One shot, and my Michael was gone. is no word to describethe loss of achild
The grief is overwhelming, and my entire life has changed. But anger isn’tfar behind. Anger at asystem that doesn’tknow how to help people struggling with mental health issues, people whose despair can lead them to find solace in drugs and alcohol.
Someone who loses aspouse is awidow or widower, and achild who loses apar ent is an orphan. But amother who has lost achild —wecan’tname it. But this is where Ifind myself, grieving a loss too awful for words, the loss of my son Michael on July 15, poisoned by atainted supply of drugs.
At the time of his death, he was connected to a“mental-health team,” courtesy of our public health-care system, but he was lucky to see aprofessional everytwo or three weeks. It wasn’tenough, and because it wasn’tenough amother, afather, two brothers, two grandmothers, aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends have been robbed of ever enjoying alaugh, a coffee, adeep conversation with Michael. The hole he’sleft in our hearts will never be filled. And here’sthe twisted irony
Last November,Michael sustained aserious drug-related injurywhich resulted in the loss of the use of his right knee. He required complex surgery. Priortothe operation, Isat in an office at VGH with ateam of eight specialists who would be involved in the procedure.

Personally,Ihave no such ambivalence. My heartbleeds for anyone, especially the likes of Susan Bibbings, who insist on disrupting society’s(my) normal daily activities. Some of these “do gooders” seem to have ascrew loose and think that they can impose their will on anyone whom they inconvenience. It doesn’twork that way! Some of the desired changes take time, whether we like it or not. And if this doesn’tplease the likes of Bibbings and her cohorts, tough bananas. They should be incarcerated.

While Laursen didn’tsee how the driver ended up on the island, he found the incident concerning that “drivers like this” are on the roads in Richmond. However, another shopper and awitness of the incident said it was an accident that left the driver and her young child embar rassed.

Most criminalsget “illegally trafficked guns from the United States,” he added
The ban is to slow down the sale of handguns at stores until “the national handgun freeze proposed in Bill C-21 comes into force.”

ElwinWong is one of many firearmlicence holderswho finds the federal government’shandgun importban frustrating and illogical.
The witness added that BCAA had been called to remove the vehicle from the island and the owner of the vehicle left immediately after No one appeared to be physically injured.

What was seen as another strange “parking job” in Richmond was actually an accident. Richmond resident Henrik Laursen came across acar on top of an island at Seafair Shopping Centre on Saturday morning (Aug. 20).
NEWS
Atemporaryban on importing handguns intoCanadacameinto effect on Aug. 19.
Temporaryhandgun import ban illogical: Richmondite
“I would not be opposed to asubstantial fine, as well as cancellation of (their) driver’slicense and driving privileges for 12 months,” said Laursen, adding these types of drivers should be required to get re-tested or go through driving school once again.
Atemporaryban on importing handguns intoCanada willdonothing to end gun violence but could kill recreational shooting, according to aRichmond resident.
“It was an accident, and the owner did take full ownership of it,” said the witness. “She was not parked there to go shopping.”
“I only do recreational shooting at ranges, butmaybe whenI’m more proficient …I willtry competinginthe sport,” said Wong. But the ban could change that. The recreational and competitive sportcould die depending on Trudeau government’s up coming plans, headded.
Wong said he has been interestedinfirearms since he was young and started shooting withairsoftguns back in the mid-80s.
Acar was left abandoned on top of an island at Seafairmall.
Richmond has developed areputation for strange parking jobs which is perhaps the wrong assumption in this situation. Regardless, Laursen would like to see stronger penalties for drivers (unlike this one) who park illegally or drive danger ously
“The reason for (the import ban) andthe action to be taken don’tcoincide,” said Wong. “How will banning firearms(handguns) fromlegal gun owners stop criminals from having guns?”
The ban is partofa“comprehensive plan to keep Canadians safe from gun violence” in addition to providingmore resources for communities, accordingtoa Global Affairs Canada media release “Coretothisplan is the recently introduced Bill C-21 that, among othermeasures, would introduce anational freeze on the sale, transferand ownershipofhandguns, anywhere in Canada.”
“If the government wishes to combat criminals with guns, then increase the budgets for policing and border services,” said Wong.
Between 2010 and 2020, the number of registered handguns in Canada increased by 71 per cent, reaching approximately 1.1 million, accordingtoStatistics Canada. More than $312 million in new funding in Budget 2021 was provided to increase firearms tracing and to implement border control measurestohelpfight gun smuggling andtrafficking. This temporary ban of restricted handguns in Canada will mean that permits for import-restricted handguns into Canada will not be issued to individuals or businesses.

This happened four times beforethe cou ple finally decided to takethe feathered creature to dryland in Ladner —close to the Reifel Bird Sanctuary—tosee if it could manage. This time, the owl took flight and flew into the trees andthendisappeared.

Sockeye fishery remains closed
Funded largely by the federal government, the program has poured $200 million into the approved research and restoration projects so far.Atthe moment, Murray said there is still around $20 million to be spent on imminent additional projects Recently,Murray also made the decision not to open Canadian commercial fisheries for Fraser River sockeye salmon, despite U.S. fisheries taking an opposite stance. Although the Pacific Salmon Commission (PSC) recommended opening the fishery, it also notedthat subsequent monitoring predicts the total sockeye salmon run size be reduced by more than 40 per cent 4.2 million fish, compared to pre-season estimates.
Pacificsalmon in B.C. will continue receiving aid from the MinistryofFisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard (DFO) after more funding was announced Tuesday Following the launch of phase one of the B.C. Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund (BCSRIF) in 2019, both the provincial and federal government are now promising to double their initial investmentsand launch phase two of the program.
Despite PSC recommendations to open the fisheryeven in light of the lower than predicted run, the Fraser River Panel announced “All Canadian Panel Area waters remain closed to commercial salmon fishing,” citing aprecautionaryapproach “Canada is abusing the precautionary approach,” said UFAWU-Unifor president James Lawson. “UFAWU-Unifor supports responsible and scientific decision making but rejecting the PSC’srecommendations confirms Canada is ignoring clear scientific data.”
Three hundred and fifty-threecourses, which range in subjects, will use the libraryand open educational resources rather than textbooks as partofKPU’s Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) initiative.
“With the startofclasses, TransLinkisnot providing real returntothe Pre-COVIDtransit services,” said Nathan Davidowicz, atransit advocate, in an email to the News TransLink adjusts transportationservice levels everythree months according to changing “demand andtravelpatterns.”
Bus route tweaked
“Although ZTC courses do not require students to pay for atextbook, there still may be other costs associated with the course, such as equipment, supplies and studio fees,” anews release from KPU stated.
The university offers eight complete programs that don’trequire buying textbooks, including two bachelor’s degrees, two associate’sdegrees, two diplomas and two certificates.
TransLink is increasing bus services in Rich mond and across Metro Vancouver to “prepare for changing travelpatterns” with the new schoolyear approaching in two weeks. This includes increasingRichmond’s430 bus route, between Brighouse and Metrotown stations, bythree minutes during peak hours on weekdays. The bus routewill operate at 12-minute intervalsinstead of 15-minute intervals starting Sept. 5. CUPE 4500,which represents some transit workers in theLower Mainland and the Capital Regional District, has launched a“Try Transit” campaign, encouraging the public to get out of their cars.
Starting September,21per cent of courses at Kwantlen Polytechnic Univer sity (KPU), based in Richmond and Sur rey, will be offered without the need for students to buy textbooks. This fall, the university will have a record number of courses without textbooks, increasing the number by three per cent from last fall.
Headed back to school? Some univer sity students won’thave to worryabout paying for costly textbooks.
“ZTC reduces financial barriers for students who may need to choose between buying atextbook and buying groceries, or who need to wait several weeks after the startofclasses until they have the funds,” says Amanda Grey, an open education strategist at KPU. Since the program’slaunch in 2018, the cumulative cost saved for KPU students by not having to purchase textbooks has now reached almost $8.5 million, according to Grey
ATransLink spokesperson previously told the News the 480 route remains suspended as it allows the transit authorityto“put service where it’sneeded most —onover crowded routes,” adding that route wasn’t particularlybusy evenprior to the pandemic Richmond’s480 bus route, which operated fromBridgeportStationtoUBC, allowed commuters to takea single bus to their destination without transferring.
The program was launched in 2018 and is the first of its kind in Canada.

ARichmond non-profit is launching the city’sfirst soccer program that caters to kids with cognitive or physical diversities or limitations. Richmond United Soccer Club’s(RUSC) Adapted Kicks program was founded by board director Gita Manhas, and it’sunique because it’stailored toward the needs of each child.
“Or if the child has aphysical disability and therefore will benefit fromone-on-one support, to learnnew skills and be given the time and space to really grow into a soccer player.”
In contrast with programs currently on offer, one of the benefits of the Adapted Kicks program is one-to-one supportfor participants.

Inclusive soccer program launched in Richmond Vikki Hui VHUI@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
“Our aim is to really embrace participation from any kid, whether it be neurodiversity —maybe they have ADHD and autism and therefore can’tparticipate in reg ular soccer programming that’smore structured,” said Manhas.
Children with cognitive or physical diversities are often underrepresented in youth sports, said Manhas. Indeed, one of her students, whose older sister is enrolled in RUSC’sregular youth soccer programming, has never been able to get involved in the same activities.
“At some point, Irealized that the family was actually driving out (of town) once aweek for the child to be involved in soccer in general,” she said. “That was amoment that really clicked for me and realizing that we can be doing more to provide soccer to diverse kids in the community.”
“I’ve set agoal for myself to be able to partner everychild who registers in the program with avolunteer for everytraining session. So the children will be able to work one-on-one and have that direct hands-on support,” said Manhas.
The program will be supervised by head coach Noah Jobson, who is experienced in the creation and execution of adaptive sports programming.
Another goal that Manhas had was to keep the program affordable. At $100, the fee includes awhole set of training sessions and afull uniformkit for participants to keep. ...maybe they haveADHD and autism and therefore can’t participate in regularsoccer programming.

One thing that makesthese playgrounds unique is that elementaryschools in Richmond are mostly tucked into neighbour hoods, Jessyexplained, which means each playarea acts as acommunity hub.
“I think they do agreat job of providing playspace fornot just the elementarykids, but the community that’swithin the neighbourhood,” saidJessy.
Although Jessy is familiar with schools in Richmond, he was able to discover unique features in each playground.

The playground stood out for the pair because it has apool and atoddlerplay area complete with toddler swings. Their review ritual is simple —Max would explore the playground, sometimes stoppingtofuel up on strawberries and fish crackers (his favourite snacks) and the pair would go on the swingsand slides. Before leaving each playground, Max would alwaysask his dad to do one thing. “He needsmetoscore on each hoop beforeweleave,” said Jessy, explaining that Maxisstilltoo shorttoscore himself.
