Dear Editor, Iamcontacting you to let you know about an issuethat in my view is becoming worse every month. Asaregular tennisplayer,Iuse the public tennis courts this beautiful city has everywhere. Iwill particularly refertothe ones at Minoru Park and Thompson community centre. These two formidable facilities have many courts in excellent conditionwith appropriate lighting toplay even at nights. The problem has to do with cigarette butts. They are everywhere. Inside the courts and mostly just outside the court’ssur rounding fences. Literally thousands of them! Ihave picked many of them up to keep the area cleanbut obviously this is not aviable solution. They are everywhere!

DearEditor, Re: “Frighteningroad rage incident in Richmond,” Online, Aug. 30. In regards to the article about the road rageincident, clearly both parties were in the wrong. Police advise thatyou should never follow avehicle afteran incident.AsMr. Chin admits, he was angry, pursued the white van and washonking. By his own account, he followed the van not once but twice in aclearly angryand hostile state. He claims this was his regular route home, but his own video recording has GPS telling him to turnright and he ignores it so as to pursue thewhite van. Agreed, thatthe van driver should not have attacked him with ametal pole or usedaracial slur.However,isMr. Chin really “the victim”? His honking and yellingwas also road rage. This is aclassic exampleof two wrongs. What is truly frightening is that both these driversare out on the roads and that we mayencounter ei ther one.

As far as Iknow there is abylaw that prohibits smoking at least 50 metres from sports arenas in Richmond. This bylaw is not followed or enforced. The same applies to lit tering. Ihavebeen aresident of this gorgeous city for well over 20 years and Ibelieveweshould all do our civic duty to keep it clean and also carefor its main tenance. What Ican’tunderstand is that garbagecans are usually inside the courts or just outside nearby yet some people simply throw theirbuttsonthe grass or on the ground carelessly without regards for their community Isincerely hope we can solve this problemthat is also ahealth and safety issue.

Each moss tower has the air cleaning capability of 275 regular trees, making them a potent tool for improving air quality, especially in highdensity urban areas where it wouldn’tbepossible to plant such alarge number of trees, such as our city core. Another handy benefit –especially given the scorching summer we had last year comes from the mosses’ ability to store large amounts of moisture, which keeps the sur rounding air cooler Imagine if these were installed at centres throughout our city and along high-traffic corridors as amedian divider. All it takes is the political will of our city councillors to implement these kinds of innovative motions to address the climate crisis.

A4 THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 2022 RICHMOND-NEWS.COM Let’sexplore mossy alternative LETTERS Email letters to Editor@Richmond-News.com

Dear Editor, Many Richmond residents are extremely concerned about the climate crisis and what we can do at the city level to address it. As the realities of climate change disasters manifest through heat waves, wildfires, drought, and flooding in areas across our province, it would be prudent for our city to embrace more innovative solutions to mitigate them and lessen their severity While the provincial and federal governments for mulate policies regarding carbon footprints to lower greenhouse gas emissions, concerned citizens in Richmond are asking how we can integrate community-level approaches to absorb them.

Dear Editor, Re: “Red flags over EV ownership” Letters, Aug. 18. EVs have charging timers that can be set to charge after midnight when demand on the electrical grid is low and there is plenty of power for far more EVs than we have now Plug-in Richmond has asked the BC Government to require that EV dealers set the timer before the vehicle is sold rather than requiring owners to do it, many of whom are unaware of this feature. There is an override switch that enables charging to begin immediately when necessary.

Often, it rests on the shoulders of the local government to come up with and implement creative solutions. What asurprise! In 2019 Trudeau and the Liberals campaigned on planting two billion trees to help offset greenhouse gases and then reiterated that plan in 2021. So how many have been planted? So far, only 0.43% of that two billion have been planted.

Ihave previously written about the importance of expanding our tree canopy throughout our city, but there are areas where planting trees may not be feasible. CityTree is an exciting and innovative green solution. They are aseries of CO2 fil tering structures containing a variety of moss that remove particulates and nitrogen oxides from the atmosphere while producing oxygen.

Dear Editor, Re: “Former cop, MLA eyes council seat,” News,Aug. 25 Thanks for an excellent reportabout the candidates for the upcoming municipal election. It promises to be an exciting election. All of the incumbent councillors, except Coun. Harold Steves are seeking re-election. Furthermore, there are anumber of veryhigh profile candidates running under different political slates. This gives us voters lots of choices for the makeup of our City Council on October 15. Hopefully, this will motivate the citizens of Richmond to take akeen interest in the election and exercise their precious right to vote. Incidentally,Iwould like to convey my sincere thanks and appreciation to retiring veteran Steves for his excellent service to this province and the City of Richmond. Enjoy your retirement, Har old! Not all accessible parking spots areequal

One thing that irks Vince Mieleofthe RichmondCentre for Disability (RCD) when he looksfor parking is when he sees someone walk away from van-accessiblespots

“Itreally frustratesmewhen all they have to do in some casesispark two or three spots over in anormal spot —it’snot much further to walk,” he said. These wider spots are a“necessity” for some, said Miele who is awheelchair user himself, rather thanconvenience. Those who use wheelchairs, be it manualormotorized, oftenneedmore room around theircarstodeploy sideload ing ramps as well as to navigate around the car to get on and off. Sometimes, these wider spots could be taken up by those who need accessible parking for adifferent reason. That’snot to say only wheelchair users need awider spot, said Miele, as theyare also a necessityfor peoplewho use leg braces andwalkers.

“Respectwho theseaccessible spaces are meant for,” he said —Vikki Hui/Richmond News

However, according to Decker, the city does not have afine for vehicles with SPARC BC permits that misuse the spots.

Althoughthe city of Richmond hasbeenworking towards implementing and increasing wider spotsfor thosewho need them, the issueremains.

Knotweed wasoriginallyintroduced to B.C. in gardens and landscaping “due to their rapid growthand attractive appear ance,” according to the Invasive Species Council of BC.

Cholesterol is awaxy,fat-based substance found in your bloodstream and cells. While cholesterol can come from the foods we eat such as meat, chicken, fish, eggs and dairyproducts, it is also produced by our liver. Our bodyneeds cholesterol to build cell membrane and makevitamin D, digestive fluids, and hormones. However, too much cholesterol can cause health problems. There are twotypes of cholesterol –low-density lipoproteins (LDL) “bad” cholesterol and high-density lipoproteins (HDL) “good” cholesterol. LDL builds up on the walls of blood vessels where it can block and damagearteriesleading to heartdisease and stroke. HDL helps clear away badcholesterol which will protect our bodyfrom cardiovascular diseases. Manyfactors contribute to high LDL-cholesterol including unhealthy diet, sedentarylifestyle, age, gender, orfamily history. On Wednesday,Thursday,Friday and Sunday evenings, the restaurant serves another set menu called “A Taste of Baan Lao”with threeseatingsper night. Chef Nutcha Phanthoupheng was inspiredbyfood from her native Thailand when she created the menu for Baan Lao in Steveston

From the “Rice Cracker with Tomato Thai Chilli” topped with acricket, to “Chef Nutcha’s Childhood Memories” –adessert resembling abonzai-sized garden –the meal was all about blending flavours with exquisite presentation.

“It’snot about going after the mass public, it’sabout going after refinement andart istryofthe Thai culinary experience,” Phanthoupheng said, through an interpreter She trained withaMichelin-star chef who cookedfor the Thai royal family, and the atmosphere of the restaurant reflects aregal quality –far fromThai street food.

“Welove it because we opened everyone’s eyes,”Phanthoupheng explained.

“Last year, our eldest finisherwas 90year old Delia Visscher, who finishedthe 8K distance in 1hour and 37 minutes.

First place overall was Jean Michel Auzoux, from Richmond, in atime of 34 minutes and 24 seconds. This year’scharity of choice is the local Dream-On Seniors Wish Foundation, which celebrates aging and makes dreams of seniors come true. Music from the ‘60s and ‘70s, draw prizes, coffee and goodies await all par ticipants back on the Oval Plaza. To register, goonline to Foreveryoung8k.ca.

B.C. athletes gatheredatRichmond’sRod and Gun Club(RRGC) for this year’snational air gun championships. The Canadian Junior National Air Gun Championships saw 30 athletes at the gun range on Aug. 20 representing B.C. in across-countrycompetition in two disciplines: air rifleand airpistol.

However, seeing kids coming outtocom peteand seeing them enjoy thesport is re warding forBryson “...there’s nothingmore satisfying than watching these kids succeed,”she added.

“Ahead of her was Richmond’svery own 87-year old Gwen McFarlan in an amazing time of 1hour 2minutes.”

Ahibernation match will be held in the first week of November to determine which athleteswill head to Nova Scotia to represent B.C. in the 2023 Canadian Junior Air Gun Championships.

Young noted that anyone age 90 and over gets free registration, adding that

“we have had many who have taken advantage of this offer.”

It’sthat time of the year again when fit ness enthusiasts aged 55 and over get their runners on and walk, jog or run eight kilometres.

“For example, most events simply award another medal to the winners -the FY8K awards winners in each age categorya bottle of good BC wine.”

Male and female shooters ages eight to 19 competed against otherprovinces remotelywith B.C. winning 10 out of 19 possible medals, three gold, four silver and three bronze, acrossCanada. “This was agreat starttogetting our sport going again after two years of no club level matches acrossthe province,” said Julie Bryson, air range director and coach at RRGC Bryson said the competition is also a chance to lookfor thenext set of athletes forthe Olympics

The 8th annual event -run by the Forever Young Club (FYC) along with the help of Nurse Next Door –attracts hundreds of senior 55+ walkers and runners in the community. “As well as being specifically for the 55+ crowd, the FY8K is different from other typical weekend running events,” said the club’sfounder,John Young.

Hopwoodstarted this regime in May in anticipation of the July long weekend event. Hopwood said he has anatural aptitude for endurance races, which attracted him to doing Ironman and otherlong-form events. But partofhis motivationisthe “good communityfeel” among the athletes and their crew, especially in Penticton, which is known for its Ironman community Hopwood, who works for Telus as an IT program manager, findstraining for endurance sports keeps him “grounded” and works as astress release. Without any distraction, training days are “verysimple” with just tryingtoreach the next tree or the next post alonghis route. In his spare time,Hopwood has gotten involved in coaching cross-countryracing with the Kajaks, Richmond’s track and field club, and he hopes to learnmore about coaching.

Steveston man wins three-dayultra triathlon event

The Ultra250, based in Penticton –which Hopwoodcalls the “triathlon heart” of B.C. –was on his bucket list to do when he was turning 40. This was delayed by afew years because of the COVID-19 pandemicbut this year he completedit despiteamedical setback, thatbeing a bout of Bell’sPalsy in the spring.

Afire along the Keremeos Creekover the B.C. Day long weekendrerouted a race equivalent to adouble Ironman, but it didn’tstop aSteveston man, Jeremy Hopwood, fromtaking first prize.

This means focusing on what you have to do, not howfar you have to go, he added. Especially given the heat, whichgot up to 44 degrees Celsius, therewas alot his crewhad to do around to keephim cool, Hopwood explained.

Trainingfor the Ultra520 meant doubling his training time, from his regular 10 hours aweek to 20 hours of week of swimming, running and cycling.

“It was alot about workingwith my supportcrew, what do we have to do in the next15-20 minutes around my heat management, what do Ineed to eat, whatdo Ineed to drink,”Hopwoodsaid.

The Ultra520 takesplace over three days and Hopwood’stotal time was 27:38:06, about 40 minutesahead of the secondplace finisher On day one, the competitors swim 10 kilometres and cycle 145 kilometres. Day two is a275-kilometre bike ride and day three is adouble marathon –84kilome tres in length. Preparing for the Ultra520 –orany other long race –includes getting ready psychologicallyaswell as physically During the nine-hourdays in the gruelling heat, Hopwood said he needed to break down what he had to accomplish into small chunksasnot to be overwhelmed by the sheermagnitude of the race. He comparesittohis kids doing school projects, and breaking them down into achievable pieces. “I think that’sareallyimportant mental skill …otherwise, it can be nearly impos sible as a whole,” Hopwood said. “But if you break it down, it’salot more doable.”

Ironman Canada started in Penticton in 1982, after a10-year hiatus from the central Okanagan city,it’sback in Penticton again thisyear Jeremy Hopwood,en route to hisIronman win.

REMEMBRANCES

OBITUARIES

HIRANO, Masami(Sammy)

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Glen. He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Karie, with whom he raised their two boys, Trevor and Ryan in North Delta. Glen is also survived by his mom Carol; sister Adrienne (Ben and Nicholas); mother in law Sharon; sister in law Kelly (Rick and Carson); brother in law Keith (Stephanie, Skylar and Declan); auntie Gail; cousins Terri (Scott), Tania (Hopper and Margot); and auntie Marlene (Annette, David and families). Glen was predeceased by his dad Ralph, uncles Frank and Andy, and nieces Carly and Hailey. Glen will be remembered for his love and dedication to his wife, boys, family and friends. At an early age, Glen started cutting lawns in his neighbourhood, and hard work and anatural aptitude led him to start his own successful landscaping company, Hooked on Gardening. Glen loved his sports, particularly hockey, baseball and golf, and took pride in coaching for 12 seasons with the North Delta Minor Hockey Association. He enjoyed his annual winter getaways to Mexico and spending summers sea dooing on Cultus Lake. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Cushing’s Support & Research Foundation.

Margaret passed peacefully at Richmond General Hospital with family members at her side. Marg’s family would like to extend aheartfelt thank you to all the staff at RGH ACE on the 4th floor for their compassion and understanding. And to Aunt Joan, without your support, understanding, and calm assurance, we would have had amuch more difficult time understanding how to proceed. We all owe you our gratitude. Thank you so very much.

Her name may never have been in lights, but she leaves behind atowering legacy bigger than any building, amonument to matriarchal love and leadership that will live on within afamily that now carries forward her fierce form of loyalty, hard work and dedication. We all miss you, Mum. Bye for now.
