So, it’s back to school I can’t say it’s the end of summer because I live with a weath er geek who would challenge me on that “It’s 25 degrees Celsius! How can you say it’s the end of summer? It’s not the end of summer You can’t say it’s the end of sum mer It’s certainly not the end of astronomi cal summer (although, he concedes, meteo rological summer ended Aug 31) ” Then I’m bombarded with weather stats and trick questions “Guess what our rainfall was in the last 60 days at YVR? ” It’s cruel. He knows I don’t do numbers, let alone rainfall measurements BTW, for other weather nerds out there, the answer, which he’s only too happy to provide, is 13 mm (the average is 73 mm) Hence, we ’ re sticking with “back to school ” But whatever we call it, this can be a nervy time of year There are the keener kids who just can’t wait to hit the books (at least I’ve heard about them) but many oth ers have a knot in their stomach I know the vast majority of teachers do what they can to create a warm and wel coming environment But I also know that school remains torture for some Right now, my thoughts go to one teen in particular Last week we ran a disturbing story about a 14 year old girl allegedly lured to Gar den City Park on the pretext of meeting a so called friend It appears to have been a set up What she met when she got to that seclud ed area at night was, to quote our reporter, “ a baying mob” apparently out for blood I’m sickened to think of how that excited anticipation of meeting a friend must have quickly turned to terror and humilation Thankfully, there were people in the vicin ity who heard her terrified screams and came to her aid But even while good Sa maritans formed a human shield to protect the girl, some in the swarm of teens tried to punch and pull her hair, according to police. Shortly after reporting on that disturbing incident, we were sent a video of what ap peared to be another teen swarming The sender thought it was also in Richmond, but police have confirmed it happened else where Still And then there was the particularly ugly video of a teen swarming in Surrey last May In that sad scenario, no good Samari tans came to help (BTW, I hope our Gar den City heroes get some kind of medal ) That said, I know these incidents are relatively rare and involve a tiny fraction of kids Of the approximately 10,000 sec ondary students in Richmond, maybe a dozen were involved in this Garden City incident But even if only a handful were directly involved, a huge number of kids starting school this week have heard about it, which in itself is chilling So how do we move forward? How, exactly, are students in general and this 14 year old victim in particular, supposed to go back to the classroom with a sense of confidence? Is she going to the same school as some of her tormentors? Will they be in some of the same classes?
Richmond a safe place: Mayor Moral rights don’t trump legal rights
Joyce Argieri RICHMOND Dear Editor, Richmond has traditionally been a strong, culturally rich and diverse community Safe and resilient, it is a place where people can walk and openly gather without fear of random ag gression Sadly, a few disappoint ing events over the past few weeks have caused us to question this as the actions of a few tarnish our reputa tion. Teen swarmings, road rage incidents as well as homo phobic or racist attacks are totally unacceptable Such actions will not be tolerated Overall, Richmond City Council has demonstrated its commitment to end such behaviour Hiring more RCMP offi cers, taking a united stand against racism, partnering in initiatives such as the “Hate Has No Place” cam paign, supporting the events of Pride Week, and adopt ing Canada’s first Cultural Harmony Plan are only a few examples of Council actions which make our city more welcoming City Council will continue to take appropriate action We encourage everyone to join us to eliminate such rep rehensible behaviour.
Canada is a parliamentary democracy: its system of government holds that the law is the supreme authority Laws govern Canadians, not perceived justice for protesters’ claim to moral rights Civil dis obedience has limitations and moral rights do not exceed legal rights in Canada If Jerome Dickey is our new candidate for council, I wish him luck However, he will have to parse his climate action views if serving the public Don Flintoff RICHMOND
I am sure lots of people have noticed it but it’s still there! Are we now going to have the same issues as other cities in regards to tent cities?
Email letters to Editor@Richmond-News.com
Come on, Mr Brodie, time to clear it now or I might go camping, too. But I would rather keep walking my dog and feel safe Richmond has become a total disaster with the drug attacks, as I witness this three or four times a day at work. Time to clean up Richmond, Mr Brodie. Give people a safe place to live so we can all be safe.

Feeling uneasy over tent at school LETTERS
Dear Editor, I often walk my dog down No 1 Road by Westminster Highway Last week, because of my dog’s curiosity, I noticed that there was a tent set up in the schoolyard, and after one week, it was still there. Is this normal now? Can we all go and pitch a tent? My concern is why hasn’t anything been done about it? School starts next week, does it not?
Malcolm Brodie Mayor RICHMOND Dear Editor, Re: “Don’t be sidetracked by protesters’ funding,” Letters, Aug. 28. The issues being discussed are law, justice, civil disobedience and public safety; not funding However, if funding contributes to a risk to pub lic safety then it too becomes an issue These road blockades are not just simple public inconve niences. This is about the risk of death because an ambulance had to take a longer route to arrive at an emergency If a death was to occur, should the group responsible for the road blockade be held ac countable under the law? Is this acceptable to you?

One Richmond trustee candidate would like to revisit the school district’s Sexual Ori entation and Gender Identity (SOGI) policy and work done by the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) working group Dean Billings, who has filed his nomina tion papers as a candidate for the Rich mond Board of Education, said the SOGI policy should promote “self acceptance and anti bullying without teaching gender affirming pseudoscience ”
This is a negative message, according to Billings Billings has an MBA and has worked as a software project manager and business analyst

Voting against the policy was Jonathan Ho, who said more time was needed for consultation Then trustee Alice Wong, who is running in this election under the Rich mond Community Coalition, told media after the vote that she opposed SOGI but voted in favour “by mistake ”
As for the DEI recommendations, which the board of education approved this past spring, Billings thinks they should focus on “low status males at risk of suicide, drug addiction, and political extremism ” Billings describes “low status males” as those at risk of becoming NEET “Not (in) education, employment or training” or incels (involuntarily celibate).
PUBLIC NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the City of Richmond intends to consider adopting Road Closure and Removal of Road Dedication Bylaw 9169 at the Council Meeting on September 12, 2022 at 7:00 pm in the Council Chambers. The purpose of Bylaw 9169 is to authorize that the lands shown outlined in bold on the sketch plan below, approximately 2,081.1 square meters located adjacent to 13760 Steveston Highway, be stopped up, cease to be public road and the road dedication removed. The Road Closure and Removal of Road Dedication Bylaw 9169 and the accompanying plan may be inspected on the City Website at https://www.richmond.ca.
To “modernize” the DEI recommenda tions, Billings said “aggressive anti rac ism content and philosophy” should be removed from learning materials, and elementary level “anti racism content must provide positive messages for any reader ” For example, the book Not My Idea, apparently available at four Richmond el ementary school, talks about systemic rac ism and “whiteness” the concept of privi lege afforded to white people versus biases towards people of colour
The SOGI policy was passed in a 6 1 vote by the Richmond Board of Education in 2018 after several raucous public meetings where people spoke both for and against Support for the policy was informed by research that shows those with gender dys phoria (not identifying with the sex they were born with) who aren’t supported have higher rates of suicide and depression

But cities can make charging easier In Richmond, the city now oper ates 51 public charging stations, with another seven set to open this year
An aircraft mechanic, Tristan Martin Jones moved with his wife to Steveston the same year Rich mond passed its bylaw amend ment requiring new buildings pro vide charging infrastructure At the time, buying an EV was a distant but pervasive thought Both worked at Vancouver Inter national Airport and a big reason they bought into the 40 year old complex was so they could cycle to work For a couple of years, bikes were all they needed But Martin Jones couldn’t get the idea of an EV out of his head He joined the strata board just before the pandemic hit At the time, only one other resident was interested in getting an electric vehicle Still, at every strategy meeting, he would bring up the idea of in stalling a charging station Martin Jones said some on coun cil didn’t believe the technology would take hold; some were wor ried about the cost
Vehicle ownership is outpac ing population growth in dozens of communities across B C , but Richmond seems to be an outlier with no new recent growth in the number of cars and early adop tion of EV infrastructure Between 2016 and 2021, the population of Richmond climbed by 11,628 Yet over that pe riod, the number of cars regis tered within its borders remained largely unchanged by the end of 2021, which Alex Bigazzi, head of UBC’s Research on Active Transportation Lab, called an “im pressive” feat Both Bigazzi and UBC econom ics professor Werner Antweiler say Richmond has done a good job concentrating new housing in dense, transit oriented apartments along the Canada Line in the lead up to the 2010 Olympics Most of those residents are younger people who have made the decision not to own a car, said Antweiler, pointing to census data And not only has car ownership levelled off, the City of Richmond was also an early backer of elec tric vehicles In 2017, it was the first jurisdiction in North America to require that all resident park ing stalls in new buildings have the electric infrastructure to install charging stations The idea, said the city’s direc tor of public works operations Suzanne Bycraft, is to get people charging at home “We were the first jurisdiction to do that,” she said No amount of city planning will raise the wealth of all residents so they can afford an electric ve hicle No municipality can alter its geography to shorten the dis tances to other cities
“Once I could talk to people with facts and say, you know, ‘Here’s how much it’s going to cost Here’s how it’s going to work Here’s how the apps work,’ it started to help make it seem kind of more mundane ”
When the strata finally had an in person AGM in the spring of 2022, it had the largest atten dance in years In the end, they voted in favour of installing two Level 2 char gers at the Richmond townhouse complex at a cost of roughly $14,000, though that price will drop $5,000 after BC Hydro re bates are applied They’re now waiting to schedule a date to have them installed “If I can charge overnight, once a week, then two chargers should give us roughly between 10 and 15 vehicles,” said Martin Jones So far, Martin Jones said at least three people have put down de posits on EVs since the chargers got approved And while it’s hard to say how fast that number will climb, the age of the building will eventually put a limit on how much the strata can help adapt its residents to a new age of mobility The cables they are planning to run underground should allow them to serve 25 to 30 vehicles more But the longer the distance, the more expensive the installa tion “Logistically, with our building being the age it is, it will be very difficult to get chargers in for ev erybody without it being really expensive,” he said Until a charger arrives in his complex, Martin Jones says the downside to owning an EV is he no longer rides his bike any where “Now, I do feel obligated to take the car sometimes because I have to charge it,” he said “As fun as this is to drive, the better option is just not having a car at all ” Richmond has also taken the lead in sharing its successes and challenges with other cities Since 2017, it has commis sioned a number of guides to help local governments scale up charg ing infrastructure in residential and shared parking areas

But one of the biggest chal lenges is old strata complexes, where space and electric capac ity are often in short supply One Steveston resident went through the process and will soon have an EV charger in his 40 year old complex ‘Demystifying the technology’

By using holes as a point of departure, Brown hopes to explore human desire, the relativity of time and our place in the gal axy “I tend to have an interest in liminal spac es, in between states, that kind of thing And when I started to try and think of what can represent that, I just started thinking about holes,” she explained One hole in particular the portable hole from Loo ney Tunes has intrigued Brown since her child hood “I always was so ex cited by this idea that you could pick up a hole, like it would be kind of solid in cer tain contexts, and then slapped onto the side of a build ing, and you could go through it,” she said As soon as Brown started her research in 2019, she began seeing holes everywhere a “hole verdose,” if you will and her inspirations expanded to black holes and even camera apertures She was particu larly intrigued by the first image of a black hole, which was captured using the Event Horizon Telescope “Camera technology is really based on apertures, which are a kind of hole as well So we were using a hole to record a hole, and that just felt really thrilling as an idea,” she explained But rest assured, as the exhibition is not intended to be a lecture on the infinite pos sibilities of holes Rather, Brown is sharing her enthusiasm about the subject through an immersive experience where one can make their own connections
