Richmond Garden Club and some community volunteers have been taking care of the perennial gardens in Paulik Park for almost 15 years.
We have dealt with theft of plants through the years but this latest one hit us hard.
A beautiful little hemlock tree was gifted to us to plant in the park. During the Christmas season, someone came in with a saw and cut the little tree down, probably to use as a Christmas tree.
By removing this tree that was shared by all who come to wander through all the gardens, this “Grinch” cut down the tree to use only for themselves.
We work very hard and are so honoured to continue to delight visitors to the park with all the love we pour into the gardens. We ask that all plants, trees, shrubs in the gardens in Paulik Park are left for all to enjoy We have some excellent nurseries in our community where plants can be purchased for private use.

No Christmas spirit in Richmond’s empty homes
Dear Editor,
Once again Christmas-time has revealed how our neighbourhood has devolved from a community of homes occupied by middle-class Canadian families and retirees to a collection of unoccupied over-sized safety-deposit boxes for wealthy offshore owners and developers
Christmas lights adorned the occupied split-level homes that are left on our streets, while the perpetually unoccupied pseudo-mansions now more than 50 per cent of the neighbourhood remained dark voids, bereft of both occupants and Christmas spirit
Young Canadian families will never be able to buy homes and properties in our neighbourhood and as retirees pass away and their homes are sold to the off-shore investors who can afford them, I foresee a
future where there will be no lights, no shining, blinking celebrations of Christmas at all along our streets
Some will accuse me of negativism, but I would argue that by ignoring the implications and long-term consequences of such issues as we have for so long, we have created problems for ourselves that could have been forestalled, brought under control, or eliminated altogether if we had been more cautious about allowing off-shore investments in this country and in Richmond.
The federal government has finally woken up to how such problems negatively affect the lives of Canadians by instituting a two-year ban of foreign purchases of homes and properties in this country
Far too little, far too late, and the exemptions they have built into the act will provide many loopholes for
smart foreign investors to exploit to their advantage
I will predict, for example, that there will be many, many foreign “students” showing up that will somehow have $4 million that they can use to buy a home in our neighbourhood
Again, too little, too late, and too lax but when it comes to governments acting in response to serious issues, should we expect anything else?
And besides, who has more say in how our community is developed and occupied long-time citizens like me, or foreign investors who will never live here?
A question certain people do not want to answer

Driver parks in accessible spot Police probe threat to YVR flight
Vikki Hui VHUI@RICHMOND-NEWS COM
In true Richmond fashion, a local driver chose to create her own parking spot on the last day of 2022
Long-time Richmond resident Darren Ong was angry when he spotted a white BMW (right) pull into a non-parking spot in front of Shopper’s Drug Mart on Williams Road on Saturday afternoon.
A picture provided by Ong shows the car parked snugly in an area marked with yellow lines, which were meant to ensure enough space for ramps in the van-accessible parking spots He added that six empty parking spots could be seen nearby.
Ong told the Richmond News that he confronted the driver inside the store, who told him she “ won’t be shopping that long ” After he threatened to call a tow truck, the driver agreed to move the vehicle
The News previously reported that Richmond malls are the main problem areas where accessible parking spots, with extra space for ramps, are often misused

A possible threat reported on a flight from Edmonton to YVR on Friday night is being investigated by the RCMP
According to Richmond RCMP, officers from the YVR detachment responded to a report of a possible threat against someone on Flair Flight 2799 shortly before midnight
“An individual on this flight received electronic communications on their mobile device of a possible threat and promptly advised the proper authorities,” said Cpl Dennis Hwang, Richmond RCMP spokesperson
A statement from YVR confirmed that a “security incident” took place on the flight, which arrived at 11:44 p.m. The plane was held on the taxiway until approximately 1 a m when it was cleared to the gate Passengers were held until approximately 2:15 a.m. before they were allowed to leave the plane
“Threats or perceived threats, in any form, will be fully investigated The safety of the flight crew, passengers, and the public will always be of paramount concern for us, ” said Hwang
The investigation is active and ongoing, added police
On December 7, Porsche Centre Richmond played host to A Not So Silent Night, the Christmas Fund’s signature fundraising event. The gala reception and auction, which raised over $110,000, was highlighted by a dazzling selection of food and drink, prepared by the talented culinary teams at Hilton Vancouver Airport, Vancouver Airport Marriott Hotel, and Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel But here’s the amazing thing: the food, the staff, the tableware - all of it was donated! Larco Hospitality’s support made the event possible, and the funds raised made holiday wishes come true!

First baby a ‘breath of fresh air’
It took until the afternoon on New Year’s Day for Richmond to finally welcome the city’s first baby of 2023
Ashley and Mandeep Athwal had their first child, a baby girl, Madison, at Richmond Hospital on Jan 1 at 4:59 p m
Mandeep described the moment he held Madison for the first time as “magical ”
Madison Athwal weighed 7 lbs 15 oz , at birth and she “ came like a breath of fresh air with all her fingers and toes, beautiful and symmetrical,” said Mandeep, who is a firsttime father

Luggage in limbo at YVR
As of Wednesday, there were still about 1,000 pieces of luggage at YVR waiting to be reunited with their owners
On Tuesday, this number was 1,500 A YVR spokesperson said they are continuing to “make steady progress with reuniting passengers and their bags ”
The 1,000 bags equates to about three to four flights, YVR noted
Vancouver International Airport is asking anyone who can’t find their lug-
gage to make a claim with their airline, either online or at the airport
They also have “baggage customer support”
personnel at their information counters on Level 1 and Level 2 to help passengers locate their luggage
Just before Christmas, with a heavy snowstorm descending on the Lower Mainland, almost all flights from YVR were cancelled, causing chaos at the airport
Some passengers ended up waiting several hours and up to a few days at the airport as the snow was cleared and flights re-scheduled
Some passengers were also waiting in planes on the tarmac for hours
As of now, about 99 per cent of flights are running there were only seven cancellations as of Tuesday morning out of 580 flights and more than 65,000 passengers were expected to travel through the airport on Tuesday
According to YVR, 99 per cent of luggage leaving the airport is being processed and sent out on time.
Daily passenger volume is expected to be between 60,000 and 67,000 this week.

Monastery re-applies to build statues, parking
Maria Rantanen MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS COM
Eight religious statues, a produce stand and a parking lot this is what the Thrangu Monastery on the Highway to Heaven wants added to its property
The Buddhist monastery on No. 5 Road is re-applying to have these erected on their property after a previous approval for them lapsed due to inactivity
In 2017, the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) approved the statues and parking lot
Because the property is located in the Agricultural Land Reserve, it’s subject to approval from the ALC
They were supposed to be built within three years, but according to
a city staff report, the owners claim the previous applicant didn’t let them know about the time limit and therefore the ALC said a new application is needed now
The staff report notes the application is largely similar to the one approved in 2017.
Before the ALC considers the application, it has to be supported by Richmond city council
The application is on the agenda for the Jan 10 planning meeting
Richmond’s Highway to Heaven policy allows religious institutions to be built on the westside (“frontlands”) of properties on the condition the backland portion is farmed
City council recently removed educational uses from the Highway to Heaven policy, following an application from a non-religious private
school, Pythagoras Academy, to build a new school on a property they had purchased
An agrologist’s report notes the backland portion of the Thrangu Monastery property is actively being farmed with greenhouses and an orchard with 150 trees (part of the orchard is on a neighbouring property)
Only produce grown on the property will be sold at the proposed produce stand
The eight statues, called “stupas,” will have a maximum height of about 12 feet
The area where the parking lot would be built is currently an overflow parking lot If approved, Thrangu Monastery would create 54 p ing spots, some of which will be the produce stand
Older homes could be densified
Some gentle density could be coming to the Broadmoor/Garden City area whereby two current single-family lots could eventually have eight residential units.
Two houses both built in 1972 and located a couple blocks apart, close to the Garden City Shopping Centre could be turned into four homes, all with suites in them.
Applications to redevelop the two lots on Heather Street are on the agenda for next week’s planning meeting.
The house at 8691 Heather St., owned by
by city council, the lot will be subdivided for two single-family homes, each containing a one-bedroom suite.
The second house, at 8420 Heather St., is owned by Baybest Homes, and the proposal coming to the planning meeting on Jan. 10 is for a similar type of development.
The city staff report notes the first one, located at the corner of Heather Street and Dolphin Avenue, has four trees in good shape that will be retained, but three that have “poor shrub-like structure and (are) of low retention value due to historical topping.”

Photographer captures fiery sunsets
Hui VHUI@RICHMOND-NEWS COM
We spoke to our regular contributors to put a face behind the beautiful photos of Richmond featured on our website To kick off our series of profiles of regular Good Morning, Richmond (GMR) contributors, we spoke to Johnny Choi, who is best known for his fiery sunset photos
Choi started off as an avid reader of the Richmond News’ print edition
His tenure as a regular contributor began after he found out about the News’ website and saw GMR
“I saw other people sending in the photos, I thought I would give it a go, ” he said.
Choi, who’s approaching 70 years old, has lived in Richmond for more than a decade
For a long time, Choi worked as a tour guide in Canada for trips to Banff and even the U S When the travel industry took a downturn, Choi switched careers to work in
food production factories, where he stayed until his retirement almost a decade ago
Nowadays, Choi can often be spotted around Richmond at some of his favourite photo spots, such as the West Dyke Trail where he often takes photos of birds and animals, and at Garry Point Park for the beautiful sunsets
“I never thought there would be so much nature in Richmond (before I moved here from East Vancouver),” he said
Choi’s love of photography began almost
50 years ago with film photography, but he decided to switch to digital cameras around the same time he moved to the city
“Before I started using digital cameras, I never took photos of birds,” said Choi, explaining the focus ability and faster shutter speeds for digital cameras make it much easier to capture the movement of birds Choi described his photography as capturing whatever he sees, whenever he sees them The best thing about photography, he explained, is that it’s good for his health
“Because you have no choice but to go outside (to take photos),” said Choi. “And
when you take photos you have to think, and then think some more when you go home and process the photos on the computer ”
Choi told the News he enjoys taking photos of animals in Richmond as much as the scenery But more often than not, Choi is out and about the city capturing a beautiful sunset
“(Sunset photos) can look very different and they’re not monotonous, especially between spring and fall,” he said
“If there are drastic changes in the weather, the clouds become exceptionally pretty as well ”
But there is one scene that eludes Choi, more than a decade after he started taking photos in the city sunrise
“Sunrises vary a lot and there are many animals who are active early in the morning,” he said, adding there are many “beautiful sceneries” to be captured before sunrise
“But I just can’t seem to be able to wake up early,” he said.

For many families, life insurance is purchased for the purpose of helping loved ones to continue their lifestyle in the future, and provide protection against financial losses As with all things, funeral and cemetery costs are steadily on the rise. Therefore, there’s a risk that much of that insurance money will be needed to pay for final expenses that could be more affordably taken care of now, through pre-arrangement. A secondary method to fund expenses is Arbor-guaranteed insurance.
Your funds will remain secure as legislation requires funeral and cemetery companies to put monies received on account of pre-arrangement, into a trust account. These trust monies can only be taken out of trust to pay for the delivery of the pre-arranged product or services.
Call us today at 604-273-3748 and speak with one of our dedicated professionals. Enquire about your range of options available! 2023 is the time to get your final affairs in order!
I went for a denture consultation, and I was told that I required soft tissue management because of irritated and damaged
tissues. What is this? A: Soft tissue management is a rehabilitation of damaged gum tissues Irritation and damage to your gum tissue may result from micro organisms harbored in your dentures’ old acrylic, or ill fitting dentures First, your dentures require cleaning to remove unhealthy organisms contributing to the inflammation and edema (swelling). Tissue conditioners (temporary soft lining material) are placed on the tissue fitting surface of your dentures to provide a clean positive adaptation to your gum tissues Healing begins and your tissues are reassessed in a week to confirm the progress of healing. Second and/or third tissue conditioner may need to be applied before continuing the construction of new dentures Healthy, pink, hard tissues, provide the important base foundation required for a successful denture New dentures promote a healthy, clean, accurate fitting surface for many years If you have any questions regarding this procedure or any other denture related subject, please book your free consultation with us

Christmas Fund wraps up another year
Valerie Leung VLEUNG@RICHMOND-NEWS COM
The 90th annual Richmond Christmas Fund helped almost 3,000 residents this year
Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG), which organizes the program to help low-income families celebrate the winter holidays, provided help to 2,820 residents in 2022
According to RCRG, this is a 20 per cent increase from 2021 where families received grocery vouchers, toys and gift cards
Richmond Christmas Fund volunteers helped almost 3,000 people this year
“We know, generally, why more people are accessing the Christmas Fund: inflation, the lingering effects of the pandemic, etc,” said RCRG in a media statement “Knowing the reasons why, however, doesn’t alleviate the
need. It simply gives context to a sobering fact: many of our fellow community members are struggling ”
The RCMP Annual Toy Drive received toys to benefit 857 children through the Christmas Fund program, and the A Not So Silent Night auction raised mreo than $110,000
Richmond Auto Mall’s Windows of Hope campaign also raised $37,500
In addition to several fundraiser events for the program, RCRG is extending its thanks to this year ’ s Christmas Fund Angel Donors who made monetary donations towards the program
RCRG said it’s proud of the community of Richmond that made it possible, through fundraisers and donations, for them to help low-income families through the holidays.

It was only 31 years ago, but already this shot of some businesses on No 3 Road in Richmond feels like a major blast from the past The shot from 1991 shows Steve’s Fish and Chips, Richmond Auto Body and AA Propane However, some of the vehicles in the photo wouldn’t look out of place from the late 1970s City of Richmond Archives, photograph #2008 39 2 238

Participating in a pageant goes beyond posing in bikinis and performing a catwalk in front of judges, according to a Richmond resident
It’s also a way to build confidence and better understand oneself, said Richmond-born Joy Chen
Chen, 22, was one of eight finalists participating in this year ’ s Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant (MCVP), held at River Rock Casino Theatre on Dec 3
The MCVP, hosted by Fairchild Television, began in 1995 and is an annual charity event Proceeds from this year ’ s competition benefited the Alzheimer Society of BC
Chen described the pageant as an “intense” competition with full-day training four days a week, which included dancing, posing, catwalking and public speaking that lasted three months before the final competition
There wasn’t much of a break in the rest of the time either, as contestants had to attend pageant-related events
“It’s more than just to walk and look pretty,” said Chen
“Coming out of the pageant I learned a lot on how to be on camera, how to talk to other people, present myself better and become more confident overall ”
She added the competition helped her “develop more as a person ”
“Even though I did not win anything, I feel like I definitely didn’t lose because I gave it my all and I did this for myself, and I believed in myself to do it ”
Initially, Chen did not consider herself “pageant material” as she thought of herself a “shy and not confident” person
“I never thought I’d be a part of the Chinese Vancouver pageant… because it just seemed like a far reach for me, ” said Chen
However, she changed her mind after watching her brother become more confident after participating in a similar Fairchild event for youth It gave her the push she needed
“Because I knew how unconfident I was in myself, I had a hard time deciding whether to apply, but I thought it (was) what I needed to challenge my-
self, so I went for it ”
As competitive as some contestants might be during pageants, Chen said that was far from what happened at the MCVP
“We expected each other to be very competitive, but that wasn’t the case at all,” she said
“My favourite part of the (pageant) was meeting the girls We were always laughing and hugging, and going through it made us closer, too, so that final stage and departure was super difficult ”
Now that the pageant is over, Chen plans to focus on finishing her final semester as a communications major at Simon Fraser University and continue working as a pilates trainer
The one-time pageant experience is enough, she told the Richmond News
“I came for the challenge, and I did it ”

Dancer explores ‘fragility of truth’
Leung VLEUNG@RICHMOND-NEWS COM
“Dance was not a distraction, but something to help me move forward or release me from whatever was happening at home ”
Marisa Christogeorge, a former trainee at the Richmond Academy of Dance, is honouring her late father by taking part in a contemporary dance production titled Source Amensia by choreographer Joshua Beamish at the Vancouver Playhouse on Jan 13 and 14
The 26-year-old’s dad was diagnosed with a rare form of dementia when she was in first grade and the theme of the production “ connected with (her) more than ever. ”
“By the time I was in high school my dad had completely forgot who I was, he had no vocabulary, and it was like his body was there, but his soul and his mind were somewhere else,” she said.
“I get to apply my own personal experience within the work in (the production).”
Despite her dad being a “deeply personal” and sensitive topic, Christogeorge, said she worked with Beamish to create the show, which opened a new experience for her “I’m seeing a lot of parallels to how I experience some of the movements and how something can deteriorate so far,” she explained
“It’s nice to bring a very deep and personal part of my childhood and life into this practice and this movement ”
Source Amnesia explores the concept of false memory, as the title suggests, and the “fragility of truth” where often many people stop thinking about “factual accuracy of the sources ” they are consuming from social media
Christogeorge told the Richmond News that the production looks at moving patterns and how one motion can create a rippling effect on others
“The overall message of the piece is that there’s always something there, whether it’s just the shadow
or the shell of something or someone, but the idea never completely disappears
“I think everyone kind of has a personal relationship to the themes of the show ”
While she moved to Vancouver in her early school years, Christogeorge continued to commute to the Richmond Academy of Dance every day for training up until she graduated and continued to the U S to further her dance career
She recently returned from New York after dancing with Sidra Bell Dance
“Pleasantly, when I came back to Vancouver, I’m really happy to be part of and see so much talent that Vancouver has to offer ”

Terry was an accomplished aviator, being in the very exclusive Mach 1 and Mach 2 clubs set in the F 86 and the CF 104, respectively. Terry retired from Canadian Airlines, formerly CP Air, as a DC 10 Captain. He was also endorsed on the F 86 Sabre (top of his class) Harvard, Chipmunk, Otter, Beach 18, DC 3, DC 8, Boeing 737, and the iconic Boeing 747.
Terry was an avid sports fan, especially hockey a shameless Canucks fan to the bitter end, often saying much to his chagrin, we snatched defeat from the jaws of victory again! Terry was a pretty good athlete himself, in both hockey and football he was invited to try out for the Ottawa Rough Riders back in the day. Very fast, but he opted for an aviation career in the military instead. Terry was a bit of a philanthropist to many good causes, and he never met a dog he didn’t like or vice versa.
