Customers’ fury from Pajo’s in the park axe
Dear Editor,
As a regular customer of Pajo’s in Garry Point Park, I was dismayed and disappointed to see Pajo’s is closing due to a flawed open public tender by the City of Richmond
It has been reported that the open tender process included an interview with two

Who are these employees and what did they say?
Did anyone even think of asking the many loyal Pajo’s customers for their opinion?
Was any survey done?
Or was it a case of the city staff knows what’s best for
I live in White Rock, but prefer to come all the way to Garry Point because of the accessibility, price and quality of Pajo’s in the park. It’s too difficult to access the wharf location because of parking, no washrooms, steep inclined access and limited space on the float Garry Point has parking, washrooms, space and is easy for walkers, bikes and dog owners
When the city gives the excuse that the decision isn’t about money, it doesn’t make sense Pajo’s is an institution and destination for

People in Richmond are wonderful My wheelchair broke as I attempted to mount a curb, not far from my home, just as a cyclist was passing by.
Not only did the cyclist stop to help, he also walked me, and the broken wheelchair home, and then was instrumental in getting it fixed
A recent trip to the store
had one person help me onto the walkway by the shopping carts, another give me a cart, and a third loaded bags of topsoil into it for me, all without my asking
Another time, on my way to the ICU to see my quadriplegic husband, my dog pulled so hard that my scooter toppled over
Suddenly, there were four people around me, three of whom had been passing in their car. They popped me
onto my feet, set me safely on the sidewalk and went on their way
Forward to yesterday, when a gentleman stopped as I was loading groceries, and insisted on helping.
I’d like everyone to know how grateful I am for all the assistance I’ve received, and how lucky I am to live in Richmond.

In the video, two vehicles collide, causing one of them to roll over at least three mes before resng on its roof
The other vehicle could be seen jumping the median and clipping a road sign, before going out of the shot.

Schools getting $2.73M to expand food program
Maria Rantanen MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS COM
Richmond schools will get about $2 73 million to build and expand their food programs.
The province announced the Feeding Futures fund last week a total of $214 million across the province over three years
The funds will be used for buying food and hiring dedicated staff to co-ordinate providing meals and snacks to students

He added that it was the driver of the vehicle which clipped the road sign who was taken away in an ambulance.
The BC Ambulance Service told the News that it received a call at 4:22 p.m. about the accident
“Two ambulances responded. Paramedics cared for and transported one paent to hospital,” said the spokesperson
Debbie Tablotney, school board chair, said thefundingisan“importantinvestmentinthe health and well-being of our students.”
“By expanding our school food programs, we can increase access to nutrious food,” she said “As a district, we are commi ed to ensuring that all students have access to the resources they need to succeed”
Canada is the only country in the G7 that doesn’t have school lunch programs

Rally focuses on drug deaths
Maria Rantanen
Purple ribbons and painted purple rocks will be put on display at a gathering outside city hall on Friday as a reminder of the 29 Richmond residents who died last year of poisoned drugs
The date of the gathering was purposely chosen by organizer Debbie Tablotney, chair of the Richmond Board of Education, to coincide with the seven-year anniversary of when the B C government declared that the overdose and drug poisoning crisis was a public health emergency
Tablotney lost her son in December to an overdose
Despite this public-health declaration, since then, more than 11,000 people have died in B C In 2022, 2,293 people died of drug toxicity, which equates to 6 4 deaths every day across the province
Tablotney is organizing the rally to bring awareness about community members dying due to street drugs being increasingly tainted with deadly chemicals such as fentanyl, carfentanil and benzodiazepines
She will have purple ribbons
that will be placed around city hall. Purple ribbons are the symbol of Moms Stop the Harm, a group of family members who’ve lost loved ones to drug poisonings
Furthermore, Steveston resident Karina Reid has painted a purple rock to represent each of the Richmond residents who died in 2022 and these will also be put on display at city hall on Friday.
Tablotney hopes the rally will highlight the lack of services for people struggling with addictions issues, the need for more harm reduction measures and the need for a safe supply of drugs
“They shouldn’t have to die because they’re addicted,” she said
While there are some services available, they can be hard to find, both for those struggling with addictions as well as loved ones trying to help them.
“The grief and chaos families go through (to find services) it has to be easier to find help,” Tablotney said The gathering starts on Friday, April 14 at 11:30 a m on the north side of city hall and will then move to the corner of No 3 Road and Granville Avenue

Warning after wallet stolen at shopping centre
Vikki Hui VHUI@RICHMOND-NEWS COM
A Richmond resident is urging people to be more vigilant after a petty thief bought $1,600-worth of lottery tickets with her stolen cards
The resident, who only wanted to be identified as “Lin,” was at Shi-Art Chinese Cuisine in Richmond Centre last week when her wallet was stolen.
Lin then paid a visit to the restaurant’s washroom, before making her way to Tim Horton’s next door to buy a snack for her son
It was only then that she realized her wallet was missing and also spotted phone alerts from her bank, warning that someone was using her cards at the lottery centre in PriceSmart Foods on Ackroyd Road
She was then told by a server at Shi-Art that they noticed a man following her
Lin estimates a loss of around $2,800, including cash, but her main concern was her ID card.
“I still hope that somebody can pick up my ID from one of the garbage bins...” she said
She immediately called the police and contacted both Richmond Centre and PriceSmart Foods for assistance
She was told security footage would be available upon request from police
RCMP spokesperson Cpl Dennis Hwang said police have received a report of a purse stolen from a bathroom and that they are investigating.
According to Hwang, wallets and purses are “rarely recovered” in such circumstances, but thieves tend to keep the cash rather than ID cards or credit cards

EV charger rule could help those in stratas
A Richmond electric vehicle advocate thinks B C ’s proposed new rules will help the city overcome one of its biggest obstacles in making EVs more accessible
“The biggest obstacle (to buying EVs) has not been all the things that people usually talk about, but rather the fact that they live in a strata, and the strata won’t agree to install charging,” said John Roston, Plug-In Richmond spokesperson
Current EV owners who have been unable to install charging stations in their strata buildings have had to go around the city searching for available charging stations, he explained, and some have had to do so in the middle of the night.
The proposed amendments to the Strata Property Act were announced last week, which include requiring strata corporations to approve requests to install EV chargers at the owner’s expense, where reasonable.
“It should make a big difference for the people who’ve been having trouble getting (chargers) installed,” said Roston
Chamber questions new minimum wage hike
Vikki Hui VHUI@RICHMOND-NEWS COM
B C will have one of the highest minimum wages in the country come June 1, but the Richmond business community thinks any increases should come more gradually.
The provincial government announced last week the minimum wage will increase from $15 65 to $16 75 per hour starting in June The 6 9-per-cent increase will reflect the province’s average annual inflation rate in 2022
The Richmond Chamber of Commerce, however, is warning this “significant” increase may pose potential challenges to
local businesses and is urging the province to provide support to employers to offset the additional costs
“A 6 9-per-cent increase to labour costs is a large burden with less than 60-days’ notice,” said Shaena Furlong, president and CEO of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce
“Most employers I speak to are in favour of regular increases to the minimum wage, but more time and a graduated approach would help them adjust accordingly”
Businesses may also face additional expenses such as the employer health tax, which applies to employers who incur more than $500,000 a year in payroll expenses, Furlong noted

Volunteers key to 40 years of service at food bank
The Richmond Food Bank is celebrating its 40th anniversary and the biggest applause goes to its volunteers.
Hajira Hussain, executive director of the Richmond Food Bank, said all the work the Richmond Food Bank has done since its inception is due to volunteers that have stepped up
Volunteers at the Richmond Food Bank
“No matter how the need increases, the volunteers and our community have stepped up to meet that need, or to meet that demand,” said Hussain. “They are what keeps us going and how we are able to serve the growing number of people that are coming to the food bank for grocery assistance.”
The Richmond Food Bank started on March 6, 1983 by serving 20 families and is now serving 1,200 households
Hussain told the Richmond News the need has also increased 56 per cent from before the pandemic
“A lot of people who never expected to be here, but are finding themselves accessing the food bank just because it’s been harder to make ends meet,” she said “We’re lucky to have so many volunteers every day coming in to provide for the community.”
With National Volunteer Week coming up, Hussain said they will be showing their appreciation to the volunteers with several social events including a barbecue potluck
“I don’t think we can function even one single day without our volunteers Because of them, we get our energy and motivation to go that extra mile.”

The funny things you see in Richmond
The West Dyke Trail in Richmond is renowned for its daily dose of wildlife
But Richmond News reader Grant McMillan didn’t spot a bald eagle, a coyote or a blue heron during his Easter Sunday walk along the dike
Do you remember the Johnson Centre strip mall on Westminster Highway?
If you do, you’ll remember the whole host of businesses that used to operate out of the popular shopping centre
As the photo from the City of Richmond archives shows, in 1991, there was the likes of the brilliantly named “Topgun Chinese
Seafood Restaurant,” as well as No 1 B B Q Noodle, Hakuyosha Dry Cleaning and Oriental Grocery
There was also Medical Office Dr. Chen, Apex Insurance Autoplan, Dentist, Low & Chiang Certified General Accountants and Paterson Vietnamese Restaurant.

Levi the baby goat was spotted walking on the West Dyke Trail on the weekend Apparently, he likes having his head scratched Grant McMillan photo
Nope, on this occasion, he bumped into Levi a threemonth-old goat, being walked on a leash by owner Sharlene.
It was an “interesting and unusual sight” McMillan told the News, who learned that Levi will grow to be at least 150 pounds. “He likes to have his head scratched”

Film producer adds cultural lens to Seth Rogen’s latest movie
Daisy Xiong
Eric Zhang, a Richmond film and TV producer, is excited that a Seth Rogen Hollywood movie that he was a consultant-producer for is set to hit the big screen in July
Joy Ride, produced by Rogen and directed by Adele Lim, a writer for Crazy Rich Asians, is a comedy about four Asian-American friends who meet and set off together on a journey of discovery to learn who they really are
“The story is set in China, but it wasn’t logistically feasible to film it in China at the time, given all the COVID restrictions So, it was actually filmed in Vancouver,” said Zhang. The production team reached out to Zhang, a long-time Richmond resident originally from Beijing, to help find an Asian cast and select locations, but also to provide a cultural lens so the film would look like it was set in China.
“I did my best to help them understand the current state of China and its cultural nuances, so that the setting looks authentic to the audience and looks like the story happened in Asia,” he said
“For example, I told them the Sun Yat Sen Gardens in Chinatown is not how China looks like now,” he laughed
Despite some similarities, Vancouver and China are still quite different, so the script was updated to turn it into a road trip movie with a lot of the stories taking place on the way from Beijing to Shanghai instead of in urban settings, Zhang explained. YVR airport will also appear in the movie
This was the first time
Zhang was a consultant-producer for a film
He said he was proud to be part of this production, which was one of the largest productions in Vancouver in 2021
He even has a cameo appearance as a cameraman in the trailer, which was released last month
“The camera is very large and expensive and it was hard to find an extra who could operate a camera, so the director asked me act as the cameraman,” said Zhang
He is glad to see another Hollywood film being released with the majority of the production team Asian, including the stars, the writer and director.
Joy Ride had its world premiere on March 17 and is set to be released in North America on July 7

NAUJOKS, Gabriela
May 2, 1942 December 1, 2022
I am heartbroken to announce the passing of my Mom, Gabriela, at the age of 80 on December 1, 2022.
She was my Angel, my Rock, and my Best Friend, and made me the lady I am today.
Gabriela was a Fashion Designer with her own exclusive boutique in Kerrisdale, Vancouver, for 12 years. Even after closing up shop, her unique designs/attention to detail were still sought after, as evidenced by the clientele that she maintained until her passing days.
Mom, passed on her eye for style and design to Me with these pearls of wisdom:
Always be Smart
Always look Elegant
Always be a Lady
Always, always Match your Shoes to your Purse
Survived by her loving daughter, Marina Kendrick and son in law Bill Kendrick who she absolutely adored
Please join us in wearing anything but black to celebrate the beautiful life of our one of kind, Gabriela.
