New direction to better serve you, the reader
Alan Campbell
“The times they are a changin’,” as a certain Bob Dylan once declared
Regular readers of this page will no doubt be aware that our editor of some 16 years or so, Eve Edmonds, has taken a year off to mentor the next generation of journalists at university
We, of course, wish her all the best in her new teaching career and I’m sure you’ll still see plenty of her cycling around her Steveston neighbourhood.
But with that, there inevitably will be changes coming to the Richmond News, some so small that you might not even notice and some more notable ones, that we absolutely hope you will.
Firstly, I’ve been given the privilege of taking overthehelmasactingeditorinEve’sabsence and I will be backed up by my very experienced colleague, Maria Rantanen, who will assume the new role as acting assistant editor.
We have behind us a very diverse and talented and multi-lingual newsroom in Valerie Leung and Vikki Hui, whose focus is on the education/arts and court beats, respectively
And we have recently welcomed back Daisy Xiong, who delved into the world of public relations for a few years, before being drawn back to the News Daisy will be honing in on the business and real estate beats
Maria and I are both very excited about our new roles and have already made a few changes behind the scenes to better serve our thousands of readers, both in print and online at Richmond-News.com.
As well as our new managerial roles, we will both still be reporting myself on breaking news and Maria in her customary role, keeping a close eye on city council so please keep those hot tips coming in.
Of the changes that you’re going to notice in the coming weeks, the design of the pages in front of you are going to be tweaked and streamlined, so we can deliver more of the community news that you look for
We also have plans to assign every report-

er, including myself, a neighbourhood beat in Richmond, so we can get an even better understanding of what’s important on your street, avenue or cul-de-sac
So please, feel free to connect with us at Editor@Richmond-News com to share your ideasofwhatyouwouldliketoseeinthe Richmond News, whether that be here in print, or online, where we produce local content, pretty much on a 24/7 basis.
In the works are plans to give you more localized content, including what’s going in the business community and more human interest stories, stories about you and your neighbours and the people that make your neighbourhood what it is.
Also looking forward to the future of the Richmond News is our publisher, Alvin Chow.
“I’m very excited about the newsroom editorial arrangement with Alan’s 15-plus years’ experience at the News and Maria’s ongoing city hall and community coverage,” he said.
“The plan to have more local and neighbourhood coverage means you can access online stories 24/7 anywhere.”
As Eve said in her parting column last week, the Richmond News couldn’t be what it is without the dedication and passion of its reporters
But it absolutely cannot function without being connected to the community and without the daily assistance of you, the reader, and we aim to honour that in the best way possible over the coming weeks and months.

Stop, vandals! Senator disputes exclusion comparison
Dear Richmond residents,
We are 6- and 7-year-old students in Division 13 at Dixon Elementary. We are sad and angry
When we arrived at school onMonday,April24wefound our classroom windows were vandalizedandbrokenfor the second time in two weeks
We cannot follow our routine at school We cannot learn.Thereisnonaturallight in our classroom We need our windows repaired
We have a school garden In November, we planted garlic It was growing beautifully. We recently planted vegeta-
We work hard to take care of our garden and we want you to do the same AtDixon, welearntohonour ourselves, honour others and honour our environment We show respect to others and our gardens We treat others like we want to be treated. We hope you will be a good example to our young students and stop this nonsense Our parents pay lots of taxes to help make our school a special place, but tax dollars need to pay for the replacement of our classroom windows We want this to change.
Dear Editor,
Re: “Foreign registry challenged,” News, April 27 I have not “compared the investigation into China interference in Canada to the Chinese Exclusion Act a hundred years ago ”
I have, however, cautioned against the registry as a modern form of Chinese exclusion and offered some ideas for the government to minimize the harms of such, as I outlined in a recent letter to Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino
Onthequestionofwhetheritisappropriatetorefertoracism in reflecting on the Chinese Exclusion Act of 100 years ago, I am baffled that advocates of human rights would discount any possibility of racism in a piece of proposed legislation that explicitly focuses on “foreign influence ”
By rejecting this possibility because it is also an argument used by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is the definition of “cutting off your nose to spite your face ” the CCP for raising concerns about racd be raising those concerns ourselves?

Minoru parking for seniors awkward
Dear Editor,
As an 80-year-old senior, I’d like to commend Richmond Leisure Services, along with the community centres, on out-trips for over 55s, but I wish to comment on the parking at Minoru Seniors Centre
The last time I participated in a trip from there, I was told I had to move my car from the parking lot to one situated above the library
This involved moving my car to the latter area, (with nobody around) and then coming down the stairs to ground level
T pe the
and belongings scattered around.
I felt very insecure and have twice mentioned this to Minoru Centre, also to the City of Richmond no answer or solution!
Surely we could be issued with a parking decal stating we’re on an outtrip for several hours?
This resulted in my cancelling a trip to “The Sound of Music” last fall as I didn’t want to go through all that in the dark
I deserve better treatment!

Police investigate fire, satanic graffiti
Two disturbing incidents in Richmond in the early hours of Sunday are causing concern among residents.
The Richmond News reported Monday how hedges were set on fire at around 2 a m in front of homes on Steveston Highway, close to No 3 Road
Buthalfanhourlaterachurch a few kilometres away on No 1 Road was also attacked, this time with sickening graffiti
Ken Pierce, the pastor for the Emmanuel Christian Community on No 1 Road, just north of Steveston Highway, told the News that someone sprayed satanic graffiti on the building for the second time in a week.
Pierce said the culprit also broke some lights, as well as spraying graffiti down the alley
Info request seems like ‘witch hunt’: Carol Day
Coun. Carol Day said it sounded like a “witch hunt” while Coun Kash Heed cautioned against “NIMBYism.”
and on some street signs.
He said photos of the damage, and of the suspect, were passed to Richmond RCMP
RichmondRCMP’sCpl.Dennis Hwang, said that, at the moment, police have no evidence to suggest the two incidents are connected
Richmond Fire-Rescue (RFR) got the call at around 2 a m of two hedges on fire in the 8000 block of Steveston Highway, close to its intersection with No 3 Road
“On arrival, crews quickly extinguished the trees and some slight extension to an adjacent structure. The fire is under investigation at this time,” said RFR’s acting Deputy Chief, Grant Wyenberg.
Alan Campbell/News
This was in reaction to a motion by Coun. Alexa Loo to have city staff look into what’s going on at the Alderbridge temporary modular housing (TMH) building, a 40-unit low-barrier home in city centre.
Day told the community safety committe that the
request for information seemed like it was targetting the residents of the Alderbridge TMH, rather than looking broadly at this type of housing
“This just feels very heavy-handed,” Day said In the end, the majority of the committee voted to have city staff look at how well the TMH is being operated, how effective its programs are as well as “sta-
tistics on the success of the recovery/housing journey” of its residents City staff will also look at overdose deaths inside homes versus on the street or in the TMH
A nearby hotel recently complained to city council their security costs have increased by 300 per cent
Heed, however, noted there’s a “global mental health crisis,” and every major city has the same is-
sues in their downtowns.
“Remember, we don’t just represent people who own hotels or own expensive housing and businesses, we also represent those people that are at the lower rung of the socio-economic ladder,” Heed said.
He further said he opposed “singling out” this TMH, run by RainCity Housing

New vendor at Garry Point
Alan Campbell
The new vendor at Garry Point Park in Steveston said he was waiting for a chance to open up in his home town and now he has it
Elango Palani, who owns and operates Organic Villa Catering on Garden City Road, will open Garry Point Grill & Fish ‘N’ Chips on Thursday, May 4
Palani is taking over from the much-loved Pajo’s, following their controversial departure from the park location after they lost out in the bidding process, despite being there for 23 years.
The new vendor, however, is “very excited” about the opportunity and said he has been working night and day toget Garry Point Grillupand running by Thursday.
“We saw the bidding process (last year) and just went for it, as we were trying to expand so why not do that here in Richmond,” said Palani, who runs the Tornado food truck, as well as several concession kiosks at Vancouver parks and beaches
“We wanted to do something in the community and developourownbrandatthe same time.”
When the news broke that Pajo’s which still has its main location on the boardwalk at Steveston Harbour was not getting its contract with the City of Richmond
renewed at the park, there was an outcry from many residents and tourists alike
Even the city’s mayor, Malcolm Brodie, had to send a letter to the Richmond News, pointing out to readers that the selection process was fair and in the best interests of the community.
Asked about the prospect of taking over the coveted spot from Pajo’s, Palani, a Richmond resident himself, said he wanted to simply “serve locals with (a) much more competitive and diverse menu for every kind of population in our community.”
$500K to plan sea berm
The City of Richmond has received half a million dollars from the province to design a dike across Shady Island
The city has already spent $1 2 million on a preliminary plan for the proposed dike that would enclose Steveston Harbour and would include gates at the east and west ends
The dike would start at London Landing, cross the water and continue along the length of Shady Island and beyond, then curve back to Garry Point Park. The cost of building the dike has been estimated to come to $250 million
The alternative would be to build a dike along the waterfront, but this would affect local businesses
Coun Alexa Loo noted staff have said the cost of building a dike along Moncton and the proposed sea berm along Shady Island would be about the same
Loo, however, told the Richmond News she questioned whether this comparison was accurate “I’m skeptical the numbers are the same in both situations,” she said.

Decades-old junk strewn along river
Cleanup needed now more than ever
It was a rare sunny April day when beachcomber and artist Steve LaRocca showed a Richmond News reporter one of his frequent haunts: an abandoned landfill along the shores of Fraser River
The former landfill felt serene at first, until closerinspection Dozensofdeterioratingtires and other decrepit debris brought a sense of doom and despair
“I think in the grand scheme of things worldwide, this really is a drop in the bucket But it’s our bucket,” said LaRocca as he surveyed the debris along the shores, picking up the occasional shoe sole or spoon for his collection
His treasures will ultimately be turned into artwork and posted on his Twitter account @ FraserRiverFind.
The former landfill, about 2 75 acres, according to LaRocca, spans two beaches between No 6 and 8 roads, also known as the 8 Ball and The Jungle, and can only be accessed during low tide.
According to former city councillor Harold Steves, it was believed to have been traded to the federal government in the mid-1960s but was later shut down The Port of Vancouver, on the other hand, claimed the site was under city jurisdiction In the 1970s, pollution charges were laid against the site and a cleanup order was issued by Environment Canada.
LaRocca first brought the state of the former dumpsite to the attention of the News two years ago. Since then, he has been mapping thelayoutoftheareaandrecordingthedebris he has seen over the years
Embedded in the walls are decades of trash from the landfill, forming the base of the industrial sites above the beaches. Trees teetered precariously over the edge and industrial vehicles have had to park further from the edge due to safety concerns, according to LaRocca
“I’m just basically getting evidence, so I can show how much worse it gets Because this is way worse than a couple of years ago,” said LaRocca, adding that the walls of dirt along the shore have receded over the past few years due to tidal action
“You’ve got basically almost the weight of the world holding onto all that stuff,” he said ButhavingfoundtrashatBarkParkandGilbert Beach that appeared to have originated from the former landfill, LaRocca feels the need to stop the pollution now more than ever.
City spokesperson Clay Adams confirmed action is being taken to address the issue. According to Adams, while the city does not have a timeline as of now, it is “moving as quickly” as possible
Environmental groups such as the Tire Stewardship and Ocean Legacy are currently waiting for a go-ahead from the city to plan a cleanup

Western Construction and Citimark: Partners in Richmond Community Building and Charitable Giving
Imagine if one raindrop became many. All the raindrops would make an ocean.
For the founders of Western Construction and Citimark, two Richmond-based companies, their dream is for everyone to become a raindrop – each person giving back to the community, however they can – so everyone can help make an ocean of a difference.
Known for their strong community roots and philanthropy, Thomas and Magdalen Leung, President and Vice-President plus founders of Western Construction, along with Nelson Chan, President and Founder of Citimark, are long-time friends and business partners Together, they’ve helped raise funds to equip Richmond Hospital with important technologies and medical equipment, improve patient care services, and upgrade facilities.
Nelson met Thomas and Magdalen in 1986 – one year after he immigrated to Richmond with his family. Nelson and Thomas then worked on a Richmond townhouse project together as their first joint partnership. Fastforward 30 plus years later,
they continue to be steadfast friends and their two Richmondbased real estate development companies have partnered on many more projects
As the founders’ personal and business roots in the Richmond community grew, Thomas, Magdalen, and Nelson joined forces to support Richmond Hospital Foundation. A loyal donor and supporter of Richmond Hospital Foundation since the early 1990s, Magdalen enthusiastically served on its board for many years. Together, they became a joint gold sponsor for golf in 2015 and continue to support the annual golf tournament to this day
By 2017, the two families made their own commitment to donate a philanthropic gift to the Foundation in support of building the Yurkovich Family Pavilion, the new Richmond Hospital acute care tower that will be home to a new emergency department, fully equipped medical imaging centre, expanded surgical centre, single-occupancy inpatient rooms and much more
What began as a new relationship between two young companies in Richmond in the 1980s blossomed into a heartfelt partnership to help create joyful living for everyone in the community through joyful giving
“We’ve lived, worked and built communities in Richmond for more than 35 years, ” explains Nelson. “Richmond Hospital is our hospital, and we want to do what we can to support our health care workers in providing much-needed and excellent compassionate care for our community in a first-class, expanded facility.”
“When you see the smile on someone ’ s face, or when they tell you how thankful they are for your support in bettering lives, it is worth it,” adds Magdalen. “There are many different opportunities to help build a better and healthier Richmond Together, we can foster many raindrops and make a difference in other’s lives ”

Q:
Are more Canadians choosing cremation over funerals to save money? Q: A:
A:It’s no secret that cremation rates in Canada continue to climb. In 2022, , approximately 73% of Canadians chose cremation. However this does s not mean that families are opting out of a funeral or final celebration.
In fact, in our experience, cremations are almost always coupled with a meaningful l ceremony service or Celebration of Life. As Canada emerged out of the COVID-19 9 pandemic, we continue to see an increase in the number of families from all cultures s and faiths embracing a physical gathering – visitation, reception and catering – to o commemorate the death of their loved one.
There has always been a need for budget-friendly options. Luckily, there are elegantly y simple solutions and wildly creative celebration options available for families to o choose from. Having something meaningful doesn’t have to be expensive. We have e always provided families with meaningful services that meet their needs and budget, , and we will continue to do so.

Q: A:
I have been wearing dentures for many years and they are to the point that my gums are extremely sore and red: what can I do?
Soft tissue management is the answer you are seeking. Rehabilitation of soft tissues is primary First, your dentures require cleaning to remove offensive organisms that may be contributing to the inflammation and edema (swelling). Tissue conditioners (temporary soft lining material) are placed on the tissue fitting surface of your dentures to provide a clean positive adaptation to your gum tissues Healing begins and your tissues are reassessed in a week to confirm the progress of healing. Generally a second and or third tissue conditioner may need to be applied before proceeding to the construction of new dentures New dentures promote a healthy clean fitting surface for many years. If you have any questions regarding this procedure or any other denture related subject, please book your free consultation with us.

Q:How can I avoid painful leg cramps?
A:
Have you been rudely awakened from sleep by the infamous nocturnal leg cramp or “charley horse.” And though these occasional cramps usually are not serious, they are undeniably painful and downright annoying Often the exact cause of leg cramps is not known, however, they are most often associated with dehydration and electrolyte imbalance That said, and you’ve heard it before, drinking the optimal amount of water - 7 to 8 eight-ounce glasses of water per day - is the first line of defense against “charley ” Staying hydrated is also important for overall health, so the water speech bears repeating! Further, simple calf stretches before bed may also stave off cramps Just remember, when stretching, to take it slowly Jolting right into a deep stretch and quick bouncing motions through the stretch are mistakes that can cause injury Supplementation with calcium, magnesium, and Vitamin E may also help And make sure your pelvis is in good alignment, to ensure proper nerve flow into your legs Call us for your complimentary consultation
