A

driver escaped with minor injuries after his vehicle crashed into a median and flipped on its side during Saturday’s night’s rainstorm.

Just before 11:30 p.m., the silver Hyundai SUV is believed to have struck a median on Russ Baker Way, near to Cessna Drive, and flipped onto its passenger side.

The male driver was apparently trapped inside and was suspended by his seatbelt.

“The driver was OK, but a little beat up and shocked,” Richmond Fire-Rescue’s deputy chief of operations, Tim Wilkinson, told the Richmond News on Monday.

“It was obviously very uncomfortable (being caught by his seatbelt). We removed the windshield and then supported the passenger with rescue straps,

before removing the seatbelt.

“He was then lowered onto a board.

Thankfully, there were no life-threatening injuries.”

The driver was then taken to hospital by paramedics.

“It certainly could have been a lot worse,” added Wilkinson, who said Saturday night’s number of emergency callouts – 35 – was “pretty average,” despite several other accidents across Richmond during the terrible weather.

ransLink has made several amendments to its new Richmond bus network proposal, following a second round of public consultation earlier this year.

While most of the proposed changes were received positively — as there will be quicker, overall bus service to accommodate more residents in the next 10 years — there was some public uproar.

Hence, TransLink altered some of its recommendations and another round of consultation has been extended to Dec. 10 (see below). After that, TransLink is expected to finalize its Southwest Area Transit Plan.

The biggest complaint came at the recommended cancellation of the 480 bus to University of B.C. Senior transit planner Rex Hodgson said TransLink will now recommend keeping the 480 with the future option to move it to peak period service only.

Another big about-face by TransLink is to keep the C92 on Sea Island. Hodgson said employers of the airport’s south terminal complained about how the new 407 route would not pass by them. Now, the C92 is back and the 407 will no longer be diverted over the Dinsmore Bridge, as originally proposed.

The 407 will now turn down Lansdowne Road, instead of Westminster Highway, as it does now. This means Oval Village residents can better access the Walmart and

the Garden City Lands, as the 407 is routed along Garden City Road on its way to/from Bridgeport Station.

Out east, the 405 will be a north-south route but it will now pass along Shell Road, between Bridgeport Road and the dyke, to pass by industrial workplaces and the new Parc Riviera condo development.

However, this means the 405 will no longer be routed on Westminster Highway and turn down Garden City Road to City Centre.

Thus, the many newer townhomes and apartments in the MacNeil secondary/ Anderson elementary quadrant will see less frequent service, a tradeoff Hodgson concedes and something TransLink will keep an eye on.

To ease the loss of the 405 there, Hodgson returned the 404 back to its original route (TransLink originally proposed the 404 running north-south from Bridgeport Station). And, the C96 has been reinstated.

In Hamilton, the 410 will be more frequent and TransLink will be studying ways to make the route bypass Queensborough Bridge traffic. The 410 will be diverted away from the Fraserwood Way industrial park, which will be directly served by the C98.

Meanwhile, the 10-year plan calls for a community bus to connect Riverport to the new industrial park and existing Port of Vancouver lands near No. 8 Road and Blundell, via a new road.

Out west, the 401 will be split into the 401(west) and 401(east). The 401w will become a “frequent” bus route with buses running every seven minutes and off-peak service of 15 minutes.

Steveston will see many changes.

A sixth bus is now being recommended to depart from the Village, then go along Steveston Highway and then along No. 3 Road.

Recommendations for the C93 to extend to London Landing will remain.

“It’s an area that’s seen a lot of development recently, so it’s an area we wanted to fill,” said Hodgson.

And the 402 will be diverted all the way up No. 2 Road, to the Richmond Olympic Oval, then along River Road to Aberdeen Station and finally Bridgeport Station.

Hodgson said TransLink is hoping to diversify the number of Canada Line stations that see bus routes.

West Richmond buses such as the 401, 407 and 410 will be split in two routes.

Doing so reduces delays from bottlenecks, said Hodgson.

igs for Kids has $13,500 more dollars in its purse thanks to the effort of brother-sister duo Eric and Shannon Reykdal. The Reykdals first set out to raise $5,000 for children battling cancer.

They were motivated to raise the money in honour of Melissa Hall Reykdal, Eric’s wife, who died two years ago from cancer.

The Wigs for Kids fundraiser took place at O’Hares Gastropub Nov. 19. The largest donation was $600 for Eric’s first lock of hair.

A cheque was presented to Wigs for Kids on Tuesday.

A

newly-registered, Richmond-based non-profit will soon be connecting local law students directly to the homeless community in the Downtown Eastside.

Ignite The Warmth (IWT), mainly founded by StevestonLondon alumni, has been working with 30 Law 12 students from McNair secondary since September.

The students were split into five groups to work alongside the youth-led ITW members on the management of the non-profit’s Annual Blanket Drive, which ultimately distributes comfort packages to Vancouver’s homeless community.

As part of their Law 12 class, the students are being asked to include information on legal resources in a pamphlet, which will be handed out by the students as part the comfort packages on Dec. 17.

Giving the perfect gift is hard.

n The Richmond-based Ignite The Warmth team has hooked up with McNair secondary law students to help the homeless.

“Each group is responsible for creating a page in the pamphlet about legal resources (legal rights, probono services, etc.),” said one of ITW’s co-founders Precilia Kong, who’s in her fourth year studying neuro science and health at UBC. “They will get first-hand experience seeing how their work influences people on the street. They are getting graded for their work, as well.”

Kong and seven other Richmond high school alumni set up ITW four years ago with a mission to combat ignorance of the homeless on three fronts: facilitate, educate and communicate.

ITW’s core desire was, and still is, helping other groups help the homeless; in particular to guide them on how

to set up charitable events, such as blanket drives.

In a similar vein, a group of local youth formed a group called Reach Richmond two years ago.

And it was through Reach Richmond’s and ITW’s mutual connection to Richmond RCMP that the McNair Law 12 students got involved in offering legal help to the homeless.

“We’re now the non-profit being connected (by Reach Richmond) with students; we’re getting grants, building a board of directors,” said Kong.

As well as working with the McNair students, ITW has working relationships with seven other Richmond high schools, which are raising funds and equipment for the Annual Blanket Drive.

Land assemblies get bigger, bolder GRAEMEWOOD

wo long-time Richmond realtors say builders and developers are increasingly turning to townhouse construction along Richmond’s arterial roads.

“In many ways the townhouse is the new single-family home,” said realtor Martin Dash, who is, along with business partner Carmen McCracken, putting together a land assembly on Steveston Highway to market to a developer.

A land assembly occurs when neighbouring owners of single-family home properties, that are zoned for townhouses, decide to sell their lots collectively to a townhouse developer. Realtors such as Dash will often approach homeowners to bring awareness to such “opportunities.”

Their four-home land assembly is one of three on Steveston Highway, between Railway Avenue and No. 2 Road.

“Three or four years from now we’ll see a steady stream of townhouses between Railway and No.2,” said McCracken.

Because the City of Richmond recently amended its Official Community Plan to allow for more townhouse zones along these main roads, such opportunities are growing.

The townhouse is seen as a more affordable housing option on the open market, but land assemblies also raise the value of land.

“When you get a number of homes in a row that has potential for development, then the land value increases because the developer can build more homes,” explained Nash, who is trying to market the four homes at a premium price to a developer (a fourth homeowner has yet to agree to a price).

Nash and McCracken determine a value for the land assembly based on market trends. McCracken said they can calculate the allowed buildable square footage of an

because land assemblies take longer to be finalized and townhouse developments also takes longer to build. Hence it may take two or three years to see construction finished from the time a land assembly deal is reached.

One large (deep) lot on Steveston Highway, next to O’Hares Gastropub sold for $2.4 million in November 2015 and is now being developed into nine townhomes that should, based on market trends, sell for more than one million dollars each.

Down the road, Anthem Properties has applied to build 43 townhouses on a site where 10 homes stand. The last posted sale date for those homes is a combined $22.7 million. Everyone has their price, seemingly, as most houses sold for about $1.75 million while one outlier went for nearly $7 million.

Coun. Linda McPhail said the city’s attempt to increase townhouse development was seen as a way to dissuade more large homes being built on arterial roads.

“When we made changes to the arterial road strategy it solidified where we wanted to see densification,” outside City Centre, said McPhail, chair of council’s planning committee.

At committee level, McPhail notes that councillors and city planners try to encourage land assemblies.

But if one homeowner holds out, that is their right.

She said larger land assemblies are occurring now.

Meanwhile, the City of Vancouver has updated its housing strategy to include more townhouse zoning in single-family home neighbourhoods (inside main roads).

McCracken said given the land constraints and housing demand in Richmond, rezoning some neighbourhoods could produce “more opportunities” for land assemblies.

But McPhail said council and staff have not broached the subject of building townhouses in neighbourhoods.

“Right now, we’re still committed to preserving singlefamily home neighbourhoods,” said McPhail.

ichmond can expect to see more Chinese visitors in 2018, after the federal government announced it will be expanding its Visa Application Centre (VAC) network in China.

According to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government, 2018 will be the “Year of Canada-China Tourism.”

Chinese nationals are the number one overseas target of Tourism Richmond, which promotes the city’s shopping network, Chinese diaspora and green spaces. And according to Juwai.com, a company that assists Chinese nationals with international property listings, real estate tourism is also a booming sector.

The federal push for Chinese visitors could have additional spinoff effects in Richmond, such as an increase in applications for work permits and permanent residency, according to Richmond-based immigration consultant Ken Lin Tok Wong.

“With more contact to the country, then chances are they would consider moving over,” said Wong.

In Richmond, 53 per cent of residents identify as Chinese — more than in any other Canadian city. Of Richmond’s 15,245 “recent immigrants” (since 2011), 59 per cent were from mainland China.

“Expanding our Visa Application Centre network in China will make it easier for Chinese families, friends and tourists to visit Canada.

As we approach the 2018 Canada-China Year of Tourism, I look forward to welcoming a record number of Chinese visitors to Canada,” said Hon. Bardish Chagger, Minister of Small Business and Tourism, via a news release.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) noted the need for seven additional VACs to handle the more than 500,000 applications that have been received from China this year — a 15 per cent increase

from 2016. To date, there are only five VACs in China, including one in Hong Kong.

Chinese visitor visas (issued) have doubled from 2012 (145,798) to 2016 (350,949), according to IRCC. Wong said the November announcement may be a “double-edged sword.”

On the one hand, the new offices offer a new door into Canada.

However, VACs are an additional, often unpublicized, screening process for Chinese visa applicants looking to eventually immigrate to Canada.

“The key message I’ve been getting from IRCC is that we are a very welcoming country. But what’s happening behind the scenes, who knows,” said Wong.

The government claims the new offices and a new payment n Ken Lin Tok Wong system provides “improved flexibility” that “will make it easier for travellers to come to Canada, and by extension, open the door to new opportunities for economic and cultural exchange.”

To that end, Wong agrees more tourists could beget longer commitments to Canada.

Or, more VACs may simply mean a continued trend toward non-permanent residency, such as more foreign workers, international students and family members on long-term “super” visas. In Richmond, since 2006, nonpermanent residents have risen from 1.3 per cent to 3.3 per cent of the population, while non-Canadians account for 17.5 per cent.

On the tourism side, Wong’s seeing an increasing trend from real estate firms to tie in sales to immigration consulting services.

But, “I must stress, investing into real estate is not something that makes you more eligible to apply for permanent residency,” he noted.

wo marquee events this Saturday are expected to pull Richmondites into the Christmas and holiday season.

“From noon to 3 p.m., Winter Tram includes free family crafts, festive refreshments and climbing aboard the beautifully restored Tram Car 1220 where Santa will be listening to the wishes of youngsters and the young-at-heart,” noted a City of Richmond news release this week.

Then, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Steveston Museum’s Town Square Park (3811 Moncton Street ) will come alive with Songs in the Snow.

“Join the singing of favourite holiday songs performed by local artists, community and school groups, take a selfie beneath the beautiful illuminations in the park, enjoy free refreshments and create vintage-style Christmas crafts.”

Songs in the Snow is a three-part Saturday series (Dec. 2-16).

In the holiday spirit of community and giving, this year’s Songs in the Snow supports the Richmond Hospital/Healthcare Auxiliary Thrift Shop building restoration on Chatham Street and Ignite the Warmth, which provides blankets to the homeless.

A cash and/or a blanket donation for each of these worthy charities is welcomed.

Songs in the Snow at the tram (4011 Moncton Street) is presented by the Steveston Historical Society, the City of Richmond and the Richmond Arts Coalition. Is Richmond ready for Onni plans?

Dear Editor, Regarding the saga of Imperial Landing, it appears that a significant part of the story has been omitted.

During the construction of the complex, I became intrigued by the massive foundation of the complex as it evolved. The volume of concrete and reinforcing steel that was being consumed appeared to be out of proportion to the structures that would be supported.

A site engineer clarified the matter by saying the developer intended to add additional levels of residential accommodation to that which had been initially approved. (Editor’s note: This has not been verified.)

Aquarium may be the Onni answer Dear Editor, Before the zoning is changed to suit Onni, I would like to suggest that what Steveston needs on that priceless site is an aquarium — obviously “marine” themed; no re-zoning necessary.

The city’s beautiful new tree-themed park on the Garden City Lands will help to beautify our mid-island, and an aquarium in Steveston would be another feature to draw visitors to that end of the island.

Certainly, to the thousands of passengers from future cruise ships it would offer a

charming gem close by.

Steveston merchants would welcome such an interesting, natural attraction, rather than a hotel or more fish & chip cafes.

As well, it would provide an educational field trip where students learn about the amazing marine life that inhabits our west coast waters.

Starfish, rock fish, jelly fish, clams, anemones, sea cucumbers, sea urchins, salmon are just some of the possibilities.

Ucluelet, the small fishing village on the Island, has a small but amazing aquarium,

From tomatos to a tree Dear Editor, My head spins from the prices demanded by local vendors for Christmas trees — both real and artificial.

I created my own for under $10 using something than can be repurposed.

I wrapped a tomato cage with crepe paper, stuck the pronged end into a pot full of sand and hung Christmas ornaments from the rings.

You could also turn it upside down and put an angel on the pronged end.

Come summer, the former Christmas tree returns to its original purpose as support for a tomato plant.

Council questions limits Dear Editor, The last civic election in Richmond saw $1 million in combined spending by political candidates.

Thankfully, the new provincial government is passing legislation to cap both donations and spending limits in municipal campaigns, and ban donations from corporations and unions.

Persons with special interests will no longer be able to dump unlimited funds into the campaign coffers of candidates for mayor or councillor.

At Monday’s city council meeting, council resolved to send a letter to the provincial government for clarification on a number of items in the new legislation.

However, this letter also included reference to the unfairness of how the new rules treat independent versus slate candidates. The new rules state that an independent candidate can receive $1,200 per year from a donor, and a slate of candidates can receive $1,200 per year (not each person on the slate).

No, I do not believe that a person should be able to donate the maximum $1,200 per year to each person on a slate of candidates.

For a hypothetical slate of eight candidates, that would be $9,600 per year, and $38,400 per four year election cycle.

This is a significant sum of money that I argue would unduly influence the political process, which is exactly what we are trying to avoid. One councillor likened the restriction of donations to hurting the political process. For whom, we wonder?

Lastly, the letter council is sending includes an ask for tax refunds on municipal political donations, as is done at the provincial and federal levels of government.

In the last civic election, $1 million was spent. So a lack of tax refunds has clearly not hurt the ability to fundraise and spend on campaigns.

If tax refunds were issued on donations, that is a huge cost to the taxpayer, and for what benefit? Municipal campaigns roll on without them, so what purpose does redistributing tax revenue to donors serve?

I suspect we’ll discover that answer as the civic campaign machinery gears up.

Canada: A beacon of hope and optimism Dear Editor, Canada’s 150th birth anniversary celebrations are coming to a close.

In this very uncertain and unpredictable world environment, Canada shines like a beacon of hope and optimism. Often, we take things for granted and don’t appreciate as to how fortunate we are to call Canada our home.

Recently, India Cultural Centre of Canada Gurdwara Nanak Niwas, situated on No. 5

Road, aka our Highway to Heaven (H2H), hosted 11 UN Ambassadors.

This was as part of their visit to attend the Conference on Peacekeeping and Defence in Vancouver.

These diplomats, led by Canadian Ambassador to the UN, Mr. Marc-Andre Blanchard had expressed an interest in meeting and talking to some members of the H2H Association and the Gurdwara (Sikh Temple) Management Committee.

All of them were appreciative of the Canadian policy of inclusion and celebration of diversity as one of this country’s major strengths and commended the work being done in Richmond and our H2H in promoting inter-cultural and inter-religious harmony.

This feeling was reinforced again when I had the privilege of attending the Volunteer Appreciation function of SUCCESS: 2017 Champions of Success.

One of the SUCCESS volunteers, a recent immigrant to Canada, shared her own experience here and felt very proud to be a part of the Canadian family. Testimonials like these — by the UN Ambassadors and by a recent immigrant to Canada — go a long way in bringing home the feeling that we are very fortunate to live in one of the best, if not the best, countries in the world.

ocal businesses took centre stage at the 40th anniversary of the Business Excellence Awards (BEA) hosted by the Richmond Chamber of Commerce last week.

More than 400 guests from different industries attended the sold-out event at the River Rock Theatre Thursday night.

Out of more than 100 nominees from a range of categories, 30 companies were short listed and 10 received awards.

“We really wanted to showcase some of the best businesses in Richmond at a gala like this,” said Rob Akimow, Chamber chair.

“We had a record number of nominees and attendees this year. We think that the more light that is shone on Richmond businesses, the better for our community as a whole.”

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the awards, a short, tongue-in-cheek video, starring Akimow and the Chamber’s president and CEO Matt Pitcairn, took the audience back to 1977 when the first and only award, Businessman of the Year, was given out.

It was awarded to Gerry Culver, manager of The Bay in Richmond at the time.

“The fact that they called it businessman tells you how times have changed. You would never have that today, thankfully. There are so many successful women in business,” said Akimow.

Regardless, it remained that way for a decade until it started to grow with a couple

more awards in 1987.

In 1990, The Young Entrepreneur of the Year category was added, and the Business Hall of Fame was established in 1999.

In 2004, the award name was changed to Excellence in Business, and then became The Business Excellence Awards in 2007. In the same year, the Innovation Award of the Year and the Outstanding Workplace awards were inaugurated.

In 2010, the Chamber built a more robust framework for judging and standardizing the selection process. This included a questionnaire for applicants to answer, and an

interview process.

“We really focused on making sure there was a transparent selection process and that we had a criteria in place that was the same for everybody. That’s the framework the Awards are now based on,” said Akimow.

“Our job is to encourage Richmond businesses and to showcase the excellent ones.

And, of course, if businesses are having any issues or challenges, we want them to call us, and we’ll try to help them.

“We want to make the awards one of the best in Canada and make Richmond one of the best places to do business.”

n honour of the 40th anniversary of the Business Excellence Awards, the Richmond Chamber of Commerce has increased its number of Hall of Fame inductees by four.

“Since 1999, we have recognized one company at each Business Awards, but this year is a very special year for us and we have four 2017 inductees,” said Rob Akimow, chair of Richmond Chamber of Commerce.

This year’s entry into the Hall of Fame was given to Lansdowne Centre, IKEA Richmond, Mar-con Wire Belt and DaMincci Jewellers.

They joined a club of previous Hall of Fame recipients, whose names have been engraved on a special plaque displayed in the Chamber, to celebrate their long-term contribution to the Richmond community. z Lansdowne Centre Formerly, Lansdowne Park Racetrack, Lansdowne Park Shopping mall opened for business in 1977, drawing customers from across the entire Lower Mainland. It was then home to Woodward’s and quickly became one of their top producing locations.

“Lansdowne Centre has been home to countless Richmond retailers in the heart of downtown Richmond,” said Akimow.

“Forty years ago, Richmond was still a small town with farms everywhere. Many

changes have occurred over the 40 years Lansdowne Centre has been in the business and it has had some ups and downs.

“We want to honour them because they are still here, doing pretty well. And they have a good vision and plan moving forwards. They are also a great community partner that has given so much back to the community. z IKEA Richmond The very first IKEA location in North America was opened in Richmond in 1976.

Over their four decades in Richmond, the Swedish company has grown and evolved in the community and are now in their third facility.

“Today, IKEA is a major player in our community and I have no doubt they will continue to have a major impact for many decades to come,” said Matt Pitcairn, Chamber president and CEO. “We are honoured to call IKEA a longstanding member and look forward to another 40 years of continued success.”

“The IKEA vision is to create a better everyday life for people,” said IKEA Richmond’s store manager Xiao Chen.

the food processing industry. All of its parts are manufactured in Richmond.

“He has a small staff team of 25, many of whom have been with him since day one, which is a true testament to Michael’s leadership,” said Akimow.

“Michael is a very giving individual and very well connected in the community. He’s a great community leader and has given a lot back to the community.” z DaMincci Jewellers DaMincci Jewellers was first established in Europe in 1887. Brothers Harry and Sam Mincci set up their first Richmond location in 1977 at the Delta River Inn. They soon

grew the business to seven stores throughout Metro Vancouver.

Over the years, they have developed thousands of loyal customers.

“They’ve been able to be part of many amazing life events of Richmond people, such as weddings and anniversaries. That’s really cool,” said Akimow.

“We are very honoured to receive this award,” said a spokesperson of DaMincci Jewellers.

“We’ve been in Richmond for 40 years, and we will keep it going for another 40 years.”

s a financial co-operative, Vancity Credit Union’s business model focuses more on meeting the longterm needs of members and their communities than short-term profits.

This includes the environment.

A series of “green initiatives” have shown the company’s determination to turn itself into a green business. “(Going green) is one of our biggest things,” said Angela Lam, community branch manager of Vancity Blundell Centre Branch.

“We give special car loans at a lower price to staff members who purchase eco-friendly vehicles, such as electronic cars and lowcarbon ones.”

The company also subsidizes bus passes for employees.

“And we have a big incentive that the company gives a rebate for staff who purchase a bike for work purposes,” added Lam. The company has also been pushing a transition to

all members from traditional bank statements to electronic ones. And it achieved zero-waste in every single branch in 2015, according to Lam, which means no waste is discharged to the landfill.

“Vancity is a financial service provider with a triple bottom line: people, planet, not just profit. We work hard for financial inclusion, social justice and environmental sustainability. This is what

we choose to do.”

Each year, the credit union shares 30 per cent of their net income with members and communities.

It also provides services to people whose needs are not being met by other financial institutions, supports businesses with ideas that would not otherwise be able to get funding and works creatively with the social enterprise and not-for-profit sectors.

The Richmond Society for Community Living (RSCL) believes that community living improves everyday lives for everybody in Richmond.

Founded by a group of parents who wanted more for their children than institutional living, RSCL has become the city’s largest provider of services for people with developmental disabilities.

It has been supporting more than 1,100 people and their family members each year, for more than 35 years.

“We are deeply honoured to be given this award, which is a great recognition of our work,” said Janice Barr, RSCL’s executive director.

“The association is committed to providing services to those in need across their life span, from when they are infants, through going to school, and to becoming an adult and entering society.”

viding information and resources to community organizations, school groups and local employers.

RSCL also works more broadly in the City of Richmond to improve awareness and to promote an inclusive mandate that sees beyond disability to ability.

“Our goal is to create inclusion for our members, helping people become

included in the community and creating a sense of belonging,” said Barr.

“RSCL believes that every individual has a place and a value in our community, regardless of their need for additional support.

Community diversity and inclusion are among the many values that make Richmond one of the most livable cities in British Columbia.”

She added that Juan never stops learning to keep up with the latest technologies. In the meantime, when more and more businesses tend to just change the parts that are not working, Juan still gives clients the option to have the parts repaired, like in the older days.

The business experiences a steady 10 to 15 per cent growth every year, according to Stephanie.

owell Auto Group (CAG), the oldest continuously owned retail automobile dealership in Richmond, will celebrate its 50th birthday next week.

Taipak packs a punch J

oey Lin founded Taipak Enterprises Ltd. 13 years ago when he graduated from SFU. It was a lot of cold calls and door-knocking, the 35-year-old recalls.

Now the company has more than 30 employees manufacturing and distributing multi-layer flexible packaging films and bags across the country. For that, Lin won Young Entrepreneur of the Year.

“It’s not just me that won the award. The honour goes to the whole team,” said Lin. The company’s products are commonly used in food processing, coffee and tea, confectionery, seafood and meat, cosmetics, and pet food products.

From packaging design to launching the products, Taipak provides packaging solutions from “start to fin-

ish” with the goal of “making packaging simpler for customers.”

“In the first few years, it was very difficult. We needed to present ourselves and win customers,” Lin recalled.

“After that stage, we developed more into customer service, to grow better as a whole, including suppliers, customers and our team members.”

Starting in 2013, Taipak invested in various packaging equipment and was able to package products in liquid, granules, powder, and loose tea leaves in different packaging formats.

Now its facility is able to handle food and beverage products, nutraceutical products, health products, and many more.

ichmond’s first production brewery, Fuggles & Warlock Craftworks Ltd., goes by the motto “Keeping Beer Weird.”

Founded two years ago by Richmond-based entrepreneurs, the business has already gained significant popularity in Canada and across the world. Outside B.C., it distributes its beer to Ontario, Korea, Taiwan, Japan and Brazil.

“Good branding and beers are the keys to our success,” said Fuggles’ president Tom Orange.

The beer packaging catches people’s eyes easily. Fuggles pursues a “geek culture” concept, appealing to video gaming, comic books and movies, with characters from those featured on the packages for different beer series.

The company also has retro video games set up on consoles in their tasting room.

many people who are also into it. It’s more of a niche market,” said Orange, who believes there is a connection between geek culture and craft beer.

“Now the population is growing and our brand appeals to a much wider market.

“But branding only gets people’s attention. We want to win customers long-term by making good beer.”

The beers it produces are also “weirdly” creative.

Fuggles doesn’t adhere to traditional recipe standards, but experiments with its own recipe and has gained a reputation for producing beers that are “interesting.”

“We try to brew nontraditional styles of beer, not just traditional German or English ones, but ones with more flavours and combinations,” said Orange.

hen two Richmondbased accountants launched the RHN accounting firm in 1978, they knew that it was the people that would help make a success of their business.

“We are very excited about receiving the award.

It confirms what we think about ourselves — we are an excellent business,” said John Nagy, shareholder and director of RHN, who joined in 2000.

“Culture is very important. We are committed to building a family-style culture.”

Nagy said that in the accounting industry, providing good service is the key, as well as a good company culture that make employees feel valued.

“Our staff make a big effort to make sure our clients are looked after, and we make sure our staff are well cared of,” said Nagy.

Go and Liu capture gold Bianca Go and Lissy Liu teamed up at World Kung Fu Championships

t was a gold medal performance for Richmond wushu standouts Bianca Go and Lissy Liu on the weekend at the 7th Traditional World Kung Fu Championships in Emeishan, China.

The pair captured gold in the Duelian (international weapon versus weapon routine) event. The girls, coached by Wang Heng, were up against 16 other entries.

The Canadian team returned home with two gold medals and five bronze.

Showcase weekend for Bantam clubs Mark Booth

he Vancouver Giants will be hosting one of two inaugural Canadian Sport School Hockey League/Western Hockey League Bantam Prep Showcases later this month in Delta.

The Giants will welcome eight CSSHL Bantam Prep teams to Planet Ice from Dec. 8 to 10. The Saskatoon Blades will also be hosting a Showcase weekend, Dec. 14 to 17.

“We are pleased to partner with the CSSHL and assist with the staging of the showcases in Saskatoon and Vancouver,” commented WHL Commissioner Ron Robison.

“The WHL/CSSHL Showcases will not only provide an opportunity to elevate the event, but also allow the Sport School students to experience everything the WHL has to offer in these markets.”

The Vancouver Showcase will feature the BWC Academy (Burnaby, B.C.), Edge School (Calgary), Northern Alberta Xtreme (Edmonton) Notre

Dame Hounds (Wilcox, Sask.), OHA Edmonton (Edmonton), and the Okanagan Hockey Academy (Penticton), along with two teams from the Delta Hockey Academy. All CSSHL student athletes taking part will receive tickets to and attend the Giants’ home game against the Kootenay Ice on Dec. 8.

“To partner with the WHL, Blades, and Giants to operate events in the Saskatoon and Vancouver markets is very exciting for us,” said Kevin Goodwin, chief operating officer of the CSSHL. “We are very impressed by the WHL’s commitment to academics, which includes their post-secondary education package. These two events allow our student athletes, and their families, to gather information about the WHL and their education package so they can make an informed decision on their academic and athletic future.”

This marks the first season the Delta Hockey Academy (DHA) has entered two teams at the Bantam Prep level. The decision came in the

wake of DHA completely dominating the second-tier Bantam Varsity level in recent years, including both teams reaching the championship game a year ago with a combined 44-5-1 record.

So far, Delta teams are holding their own in the top tier with Delta Green continuing its reputation as a powerhouse with a 7-3-1 record to date, while Delta White sits at 4-5-1.

The academy continues to ice a team at the Bantam Varsity level which currently owns a 7-2-0 record.

The Elite 15 team sits first in its division with a 15-4-1 record while at the Midget level, both Delta squads are doing well. Midget Prep is second in its division with a 14-2-1 record while the varsity squad is fourth with a 5-8-3 record.

OBITUARIES GREIG, George Reid Aitken Grandpa George passed away peacefully on November 16th, 2017 just shy of his 91st birthday, surrounded by his family. He will be missed dearly by his children: Lisa (Ken), Michael, Brent (Linda), Laurie (Allan), Kevin (Monique) and his grandchildren Ashley (Dave), Jayme, Sara, Meghan (Tahylor), Karen, Brody, Tanya, Andrea, Graham and Vanessa and his great grand child Rylan.

George was born in Burnaby to Scottish immigrants James and Bessie. After spending a brief time back in Scotland during the Depression the family resettled in Vancouver.

Watching his family persevere though the hard times of the great depression instilled a strong work ethic and the appreciation of saving for a rainy day.

George left school in Grade 9 and went to work for the Union Steam Ship Company. He worked many jobs there culminating in becoming Head Purser, where some of his fondest memories were of travelling up and down the BC Coast stopping in small Communities.

One of his favorite past times was skiing, and he and some friends rented a cabin on Hollyburn Mountain for several years. It was here that he met his soon to be wife Christine whom he married in 1953 and shared 61 years with. In 1957 they moved their growing family to Richmond and planted their roots here for the next 59 years. Their home was always full of life, in the early years hosting their own parties, then their children’s parties and finally, sharing many Christmas’s and summer pool days with 3 generations of Greigs’.

George’s Island glass legacy started when he went to work for his brother in the glass industry. When a local glass shop, Island Glass, came up for sale in 1966 the two brothers bought it and so began George’s final career. He worked hard, 6 days a week for several years, with little time for holidays.

He eventually bought his brother out and later welcomed his three sons into the business.

Although he worked long hours he always had time to attend or coach his children in the various sports they participated in.

Upon retiring George and Christine were able to spend lots of time travelling and had frequent trips to Reno or Las Vegas, and several cruises to different destinations.

Until recently George could often be found playing his favorite game Pai Gow with one of his children at the River Rock Casino.

The family is thankful for all those who helped provide exceptional attention and care in Georges final year, including his special caregiver Andree, and the staff at both Gilmore Gardens and Delta Views.

Dad/Grandpa will be remembered for his dedication to family, his generosity and his ability to persevere through tough times. We will all miss him deeply.
