A

crackdown on alleged money-laundering at River Rock Casino and Resort will begin with having government investigators on the casino floor 24/7.

Their job will be to help source the funds with which gamblers aim to play.

“In particular, (investigators) will assist with issues surrounding source of funds, third-party cash drops, and other operational support,” noted the govern-

ment. This is the first of two interim recommendations B.C.’s Attorney General David Eby announced Tuesday.

The recommendations come from an ongoing independent review of anti-money laundering policies and practices at Lower Mainland gaming establishments.

“Our government has made clear the urgency around addressing issues of moneylaundering at B.C. casinos, and we will ensure these first two recommendations are not only implemented as soon as possible, but enforced on the ground,” said Eby, via a govern-

ment statement.

A second recommendation is for the River Rock to complete a Source of Funds Declaration for cash deposits and bearer bonds of $10,000 or more.

“At a minimum, the declaration must outline a customer’s identification and provide the source of their funds, including the financial institution and account from which the cash or bond was sourced.

“After two consecutive transactions, cash can only be accepted from the customer once it has been determined that it is not of a suspicious or illegal nature,” noted the government.

Bearer bonds are unregistered bonds issued by a bond agent.

As such, they are considered to be popular in money-laundering circles.

The review was ordered by Eby in September after he examined a report by accounting firm MNP that highlighted numerous irregularities in anti-money laundering practices at River Rock, leading to “a culture accepting of large bulk cash transactions.”

In one month (July 2015), the casino accepted $13.5 million in $20 bills alone. A Vancouver Sun investigation found links to money-laundering allegations and real estate purchases.

toreys, an innovative 129 unit affordable rental housing development in Richmond, complete with on-site supportive services, opened Friday morning.

The non-profit owned and operated units and supportive services are now available to help some of the most vulnerable people in Richmond.

“Storeys has demonstrated what partnerships can achieve in the non-profit housing sector,” Brenda Plant, executive director of Turning Point Housing Society, said at the opening.

Storeys, at 8111 Granville Avenue/8080 Anderson Road in Richmond’s City Centre, is the result of a unique partnership between all three levels of government and a consortium of five non-profit organizations comprising Coast Mental Health, Pathways Clubhouse, S.U.C.C.E.S.S., Tikva Housing Society and Turning Point Recovery Society.

In addition to rental units, Storeys provides critical supportive services, programming

and administrative space to further support tenants in achieving housing stability and life skills.

The combination of partners and supportive services will allow a variety of vulnerable groups to be served, including low-income families and seniors, and individuals with mental health and addictions issues.

“On behalf of the consortium, I would like to

express our gratitude to the City of Richmond and to the provincial and federal governments for their leadership and support in the development of Storeys,” said Plant, who’s also the non-profit consortium representative.

The development’s name, Storeys, represents the diverse backgrounds of the people who will call the building home.

The name suggests that every resident living in the building comes with a story and that new and inspiring stories will be written within the walls of the development.

The building is also home to Storeys Café, a social-purpose café open to the public that generates revenues to be re-invested into supportive housing.

teveston-Richmond East MP Joe Peschisolido is hailing the recent opening of a new, 129-unit subsidized, rental housing development as a prime example of what Canada’s new National Housing Strategy will bring to communities.

“This is a good example,” said Peschisolido.

Granted, the Granville Avenue development, dubbed Storeys, is largely a provincial-municipal effort, Peschisolido said more funding ($15.9 billion in total) will start to funnel into such projects across Canada between 2019 and 2029.

Responding to criticism from Richmond Centre’s Conservative MP Alice Wong, that the strategy is not being immediately implemented and does little to address housing affordability for the middle class, Peschisolido said the strategy is specifically designed for low-income

people.

The $57.4 million Storeys used $3.1 million through the federalprovincial Investment in Affordable Housing Agreement.

But a major component of the capital costs, $19.4 million, came from the City of Richmond’s Affordable Housing Strategy, funded by new developments.

Peschisolido said the Canadian government will step up its contributions under the strategy, which will nevertheless remain dependent on provinces, municipalities and the development industry.

“You’re utilizing the market to get a public good.

“This policy is brilliant because it combines one’s heart and head where you utilize the role of the market, as well as government (help). Because there are times the private sector doesn’t function all the time,” he said.

Wong and the Conservatives were also critical about the strategy’s lack of details.

Police appeal for help locating missing man, 58 Randy Whitcher last seen in Steveston Alan Campbell

T

he RCMP is asking the public to look out for a missing 58-year-old man from Richmond, who has not been seen since Wednesday.

Randy William Whitcher was last seen at around 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 29 near the area of Garry Street in Steveston.

Whitcher is described as Caucasian, 176 pounds, brown eyes and balding with brown hair.

He may be wearing a black hooded jacket, white shirt, jeans and black shoes.

Cpl. Dennis Hwang, of Richmond RCMP, said Whitcher’s family, friends and police are very concerned and worried about his well-being.

“Please make contact with them to let them know you are safe,” added Hwang.

Anyone with information as to Whitcher’s whereabouts is urged to contact their local police.

ichmond RCMP announced Tuesday the bust of another illegal “booze can” operating in the city.

The bust took place in a nondescript industrial park near No. 5 and Bridgeport roads.

Inside the two-storey, 2,000-square-foot unit in the 11700-block of Voyageur Way, police discovered alcohol being openly served in a clubhouse similar to a karaoke lounge, with professionalgrade lighting. One room had a poker table set up.

Another illuminated wall sign labelled the booze can as the “Club House” and C Chinese karaoke appeared to be playing at the time of the bust. The drinks of choice w were Grey Goose vodka, Hennesy cognac and cans oof Bud. Police alluded to potenttially nefarious activity at the booze can. “Of interest, the monitoring area had cameras ttrained on the front entrance aarea,” noted a statement ffrom Richmond RCMP. Booze cans are described as illegal nightclubs and/or liquor establishments, often

featuring some gambling tables, operating outside of regulations and considered by police as an attractive place for organized crime to take place.

Police reported busting a booze can near River Rock Casino and Resort last month.

“This (latest) booze can was far more elaborate than the first one we discovered around a month ago. We are concerned for a number of reasons, with public safety being at the forefront,” said Richmond RCMP spokesman Cpl. Dennis Hwang.

Power of the People: Part two

space. I feel the City needs to be open-minded and encourage creative ideas to increase the inventory of green space in Richmond instead of paving over it.

The Power of the People has yielded some successes this year.

The province has granted a review of the Massey Tunnel enhancement project, the house sizes on farm land have been reduced by half, the Imperial Landing (Onni) site has gone back to Public Hearing twice for better alternatives than just a strip mall on the Fraser River and council is lobbying for improved relations with the Port of Vancouver and The Vancouver Airport Authority (YVR.)

There are opportunities everyday to influence the direction of council such as participating on one of our committees and our online public engagement surveys; coming out to open houses, Committee and Council meetings or simply calling or emailing us.

Your voice is important.

In elections, choosing candidates that support your values is critical. Effective officials address people’s concerns and engage in active debate and subsequently make decisions that are good for the entire city, please vote at the upcoming October 20, 2018 election.

A great start, but more needs to be done. Council has directed staff to come up with options for further reductions of mansions on farm land and the power of the people will help drive that change, which is coming soon.

Recently the Steveston waterfront dodged a bullet when, after effective debate, the density of the waterfront was reduced from the current 1.6 Floor Area Ratio (FAR) to 1.2 FAR.

Province-wide election donation limits have been reduced to $1,200 per donor, but Richmond councillor candidates can still spend up to $59,794, so slates with 6 candidates can still spend $360,000. This creates an uneven playing field. You can make a difference by contacting www.election.bc.ca.

When I recognized that the current buildings along Bayview were well under the allowable size, l lobbied for a FAR zoning reduction to maintain the current form and character. All developers can apply for variances asking for increases in height and density that exceed our zoning restrictions. It’s up to council to represent the people of Richmond and make decisions based on the needs of the community.

In November, people from Steveston Village challenged council’s decision to create and pave a previously unopened lane at the rear of their properties for over 40 years, removing green space.

This is an example of an opportunity were the City could work with the public to find alternative uses for the unopened lanes in Steveston.

FYI: Shaw TV no longer airs the council meetings but video of the council meetings can be viewed on the city web site at www.richmond.ca. The City of Richmond doesn’t need tax payers, it needs engaged citizens all working together to create better lives for everyone.

Fix existing bike lanes first Dear Editor, Re: “Hedges still hiding danger for cyclists,” Saddle Up, Nov. 22.

As Geordie McGillvray points out, there is often a disconnect between perceived and actual safety when cycling on separated pathways. While we agree that improvements to the Westminster Hwy. pathway between No. 6 and No. 8 roads are needed, to suggest that the city should direct people riding bikes to choose the roadway, rather than improve the separated pathway is missing the root cause of the problem: Neglecting to upgrade poor, existing cycling infrastructure to accommodate riders of all ages and abilities (AAA).

Thanks to the City of Richmond, trails such as the Railway Greenway have been constructed with improved visibility at intersections through the use of green painted crosswalks and clearer signage. In the future, providing separate space between people cycling and walking on mixed-use pathways is also preferred. Further safety improvements would involve separately phased turn signals for right and left-turning vehicles and people crossing the street, as seen on the Hornby Street protected bike lane in Vancouver.

road-oriented “cyclists.” Richmond has an incredible opportunity to increase transport and recreational cycling; this begins with inclusive infrastructure such as protected bike lanes, reduced speed limits to 30 km/hr on residential streets, and other traffic calming measures. Road safety education for all road users is equally important in these efforts.

The number of deaths from people cycling on Richmond roads in recent years is a sign

that safer, more inclusive roads are needed.

The HUB Cycling - Richmond / YVR Local Committee meets monthly to discuss these matters and other cycling related issues, and to advocate for improvements in the City of Richmond.

Scoot over, bad driver

Dear Editor, On Nov. 9, at approximately 7:30 a.m., I was riding my scooter eastbound in the right lane on Granville Avenue through a green light at No. 3 Road.

While I was travelling at a speed of 50 km/h, a lightcoloured SUV slowly turned on to Granville Avenue from a driveway in front of me. The driver did not shoulder-check, cutting me off. This failure to yield caused a situation where my options were to either crash into their vehicle, or brake hard to avoid hitting it.

I braked to avoid a collision.

This caused the front wheel of my scooter to skid, sending it and me hurtling in opposite directions across the pavement.

Momentum threw me onto the ground, bouncing off my right hip, slowly skidding to a stop in the left lane.

Laying on the pavement, I was fortunate there was no traffic: The outcome would have been worse had a car been behind me. I remember bracing for an impact that thankfully never happened.

Coming to a stop, an eternity seemed to pass. After some time, Good Samaritans came to my aid. Then first responders arrived, and I lived to tell of this event.

To the Good Samaritans and first responders involved, please accept my sincerest thank you for your assistance.

To the SUV driver who apparently missed the yield/shoulder check portion of their driving test, thanks for not killing me.

Brodie-Day dynamic embarrassing to see Dear Editor, I attended the City of Richmond council meeting this evening (Nov. 27) and was absolutely shocked by the lack of civility our mayor demonstrated to Coun. Carol Day. Several times during the proceedings, the mayor showed nothing but condemnation and contempt for Coun. Day, to the point that it was uncomfortable within chambers.

Civility of government is a cornerstone of democracy and what Mayor Brodie did tonight was bordering on harassment. He was rude, belligerent and dictatorial.

The major reason I was there, as were several members of the Steveston community, was the issue of paving of the easement between houses on Richmond and Broadway streets, between Second and First avenues.

Coun. Day was advocating on behalf of those who had come to speak against this and the mayor kept publicly belittling her.

Do we need this type of abuse within our city council? I think not.

It may be time for a new mayor, one who will provide positive leadership and not harass and humiliate colleagues and public servants.

I, for one, was embarrassed to be a Richmondite tonight.

It’s not about lanes, it’s about process Dear Editor, Re: “Clear a path, we’re comin’ through,” News, Dec. 1 Perhaps the mayor and council are correct in taking back the city-owned lanes that the residents were granted access to about nine years ago.

However, to make the decision behind closed doors, without proper notification and public meetings, and to pave the lanes for no apparent reason, defies comprehension.

The fact that the director, corporate communications and marketing, appears to have not provided a reason when asked why the laneways were being paved — he stated “It’s a public space, meant for the betterment of the entire community, not

exclusively for the residents here.”

As someone who lives in the Thompson area, I would like to know how paving these laneways with my tax dollars is for my benefit. There are older roads in the Thompson area that should be widened, and have curbs and sidewalks installed.

As a taxpayer, why are we really paving these laneways since the residents aren’t demanding it?

Why is public consultation limited in Richmond by using closed meetings?

Where is the accountability and transparency when simple questions go unanswered? After all, our taxpayer dollars are paving these public lanes.

Light shaming intolerable Dear Editor, I would like to complain about all the Christmas lights that are circling city hall and the boulevards.

This morning, when I was driving past them, I could not believe my eyes.

These Christmas lights

are absolutely beautiful and what an awesome sight.

It made my day — until I realized what was actually going on here.

When I got back home and looked at my strings of lights on my boulevard,

which I thought were amazing, it hit me.

This is a blatant case of “lights shaming” and I won’t put up with it.

Canadian Tire here I come.

W

ith a giant streak of flame red hair and inspirational words such as “invigorate” and “perseverance” tattooed on her arms, Melanie Eng isn’t difficult to pick out in a crowded coffee shop in Richmond’s City Centre.

But if you thought for a second the 29-year-old Hugh Boyd alumni was deliberately trying to attract attention, you’d be wrong.

On the contrary, the full-time sound editor and part-time recording artist is happy to beaver away on her own in a Vancouver sound editing studio, so she can quietly fuel her passion for a very particular kind of music.

She isn’t interested in chasing fame, or the big bucks associated with such popularity.

However, get her onto the subject of writing lyrics for her electronic pop albums — the second of which was released a couple of weeks ago — and Eng’s eyes widen and her mouth moves a little faster.

So much so, that she starts to open up on all kinds of things, no least what she dreams about when penning words of wisdom for her songs.

“I had a notebook to begin with and when words popped up, I would write them down,” Eng said during a coffee date with the Richmond News.

“And I would wake up in the middle of the night after dreaming and write stuff down. Then I realized I could kind of control my dreams, and I found out there was this thing called lucid dreaming, where you can actually control your dreams.

“You know you’re dreaming and you’re able to direct what happens in that dream.

It’s really weird.

“It gave me a lot of creative ideas; I could be like flying in my dream and translate that into lyrics.

“There’s a song called Fantasy, with a very dreamy vibe. I’m in my own fantasy world, surrounded by fireflies and I controlled how they moved.

“When I was writing, it was great timing that these lucid dreams started. It’s weird, because I haven’t really had those dreams since I stopped writing.”

If you’re curious to find out what goes on inside Eng’s head during the night, then you might want to avail yourself of a copy of her latest album which, unsurprisingly, is titled Awake and Dreaming.

The album is a year-long labour of love for Eng and her producer friend Richard Vandop.

But it certainly hasn’t been plain-sailing for Eng who, after graduating from high school, went to BCIT for a part-time radio broadcasting course, before doing a year at Vancouver Film School, where the plug was pulled on the music component after she had signed up.

“They replaced it with video game audio and they wouldn’t give me a full refund, so I was kind of stuck with it,” said Eng, who lives in a condo near the River Rock Casino.

“I was the only girl in my class, out of 15.

But I played roller hockey and floor hockey, and I was used to being around guys all the time and I get along with them just fine.

“I learned mixing sound into movies and TV shows, learned a little bit about animation, which is what I’m doing now.”

Eng: Doin' it for love From page 10 Thankfully, Eng likes video games and it wasn’t all bad, as it eventually helped land her a sound editing animation job with DHX Media, where she is now, having previously worked as a casino restaurant server and meter-reader for BC Hydro.

Away from editing sound to animation, Eng said she’s never considered music as a career, as “everyone always keeps telling me how tough it is etc. But I tried not to listen to that too much.

“I’m doing it because I love it; not to get famous or make money. If it so happens that I have a hit song, then great.”

As is the case with electronic pop, few instruments are actually being played; it’s all done via computer-generated sound.

And that’s OK, said Eng, when asked if it’s tough to get taken seriously as an artist.

“(Electronic pop) is more widely available now; there’s the Chainsmokers, for instance, so it’s not that hard to explain these days,” said Eng, who admits that a glass of wine during her writing phases aids the artistic flow.

And her inspiration? Easy – Juno-winning Canadian singer/songwriter/cartoonist by the name of Lights.

“I discovered her in Grade 11. She wasn’t even ‘discovered’ yet. I contacted her and we stay in touch. She tells me to go for my dreams. I’ve seen her 30 times in concert,” said Eng. “She inspires me to just share my music, emotions and feelings with people and hope they can relate to it.”

Grannies not for stopping at 10 years Graeme Wood

here should be no stopping the Richmond Gogos in the New Year as they mark their 10th anniversary in assisting the global AIDS pandemic, via the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

The Richmond-based Gogos chapter is one of close to 250 across Canada that participates in the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign in the 15 sub-Saharan African countries most afflicted by AIDS. Their job, explained founder Jean Way, is to empower older, African women, grandmothers who are referred to as “Gogos” in Zulu culture, who are raising their grandchildren because the parents — their adult children — have died of AIDS. “It’s a really different model, it’s not a charity model,” said Way. “That’s not a word used with this campaign. It’s a solidarity model, working with them, not giving to them. We hear from them what they need. We’re not saying you need water; you need a house; you need healthcare. We hear from them and they send a proposal to the Stephen Lewis Foundation.”

“It’s a huge job for the grandmothers to

raise a generation, a generation later than they raised their own children.”

The foundation tends to focus on providing gogos with assistance in education and health care. It also endeavours to help them build community networks.

Friday marked the 10th World AIDS Day the Richmond Gogos participated in, here in Richmond. Presently, their goal is to recruit new members.

“We all got into this when we were in our sixties and now we’re in our seventies and things are happening in people’s lives,” said Way, whose son died of AIDS in 1990 at the age of 35.

“There may not be the energy as there used to so we’re looking for new people.”

“I just wanted to do anything I could to make that death not in vain,” she explained.

Fellow co-founder Leah Levitt said the Gogos have helped ground her.

“When I heard about it, I certainly thought it was important,” said Levitt.

“I had heard of Stephen Lewis’ work and I certainly want to eradicate AIDS in someone’s lifetime, maybe not ours. And these grandmothers with grandchildren have such a job to do. We’re so fortunate, so I want to make a

difference.”

Together and with about 40 other members, Levitt and Way participate in community events and hold marketplaces for fundraising. Right now, they’re selling handmade bags with African designs.

The money goes to a cause that remains as important as ever but one that has also lost some spark in the past decade.

“Some of the funding has been pulled away because they (the international community) don’t think it’s an important issue anymore; it’s gone way under the radar,” explained Way. “They think now that there are drugs available — and the drugs mind you are only available to about half the people in Africa —

that that solves all the problems.”

The World Health Organization estimates there are 36.7 million people living with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. In 2016, one million people died from HIV-related causes.

VCH: Get flu shot or wear mask

I

f you’re either planning to go to Richmond Hospital or any, local health care facility between now and March 31, you need to have had a flu shot or wear a mask.

As of last Friday, visitors to Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) facilities are being asked to wear a surgical mask if they haven’t received their annual flu

shot.

The policy is part of the province’s strategy to prevent the spread of flu and protect already vulnerable patients from a potentially fatal infection.

The policy is applicable to all patient care areas in VCH hospitals, residential care homes and other health facilities between Dec. 1 and March 31, 2018.

Flu shots for visitors are free and can be obtained at your family doctor, walkin clinics or pharmacies.

The ImmunizeBC website lists all clinics across B.C. at ImmunizeBC.ca.

People who have not had a flu shot can obtain a mask at a nursing station or outpatient reception desk.

ocal artists Glen Andersen and Marina Szijarto are presenting a Richmonditegenerated, three-dimensional documentary that takes you on a tour of the “lifeblood” of Richmond — the Fraser River.

On Thursday, at the Richmond Cultural Centre, the public can walk around a number of screens that project roughly 200, 15-second video clips of the Fraser River from 35 participants, plus Andersen and Szijarto’s contributions.

The screening begins at 6:30 p.m. and repeats until 8:30 p.m. with live music in between. There is no specific time you need to show up, said Andersen, as the 50-minute film is said not to have a beginning or end.

Andersen said the “crowd-sourced community montage” is named The Voice of the River and it was intended to allow the public to share what they felt was important to them vis-à-vis the Fraser River.

“The theme was what you like about the

Fraser, because we wanted people to think if they want to see the Fraser sustainable in the decades to come, then the best way is to express what you love about it,” said Andersen.

“It tends to be ecological, but it covers other beneficial aspects like farming. There are shots of tugboats because people are into boats. And there are some historical clips as well,” added Andersen.

Last week, Andersen and Szijarto wrote on the project website about why generating video clips, shot on smartphones, was important: “Richmond would not exist if not for the river and all the sediments carried from its interior valleys for tens of thousands of years. The life in and along the river, especially the health of the Lower Fraser estuary, has been under threat from industry and development for decades. But if we can’t identify what we love about it, how can we be motivated to preserve it?

“This project takes advantage of the fact that almost everyone carries a camera these days and can shoot and post a movie in minutes. The intent is to harness and focus all of that visual creative capacity in the ser-

Q: How can I make my hearing aid battery last longer?

Hearing aids use Zinc Air batteries which come in several sizes: 10, 13, 312, and 675 and are coded with different colors. Hearing aid batteries typically last between 3 and 30 days, depending on size and usage time. There is some important information the users should know in order to make their batteries last a little bit longer.

Zink Air batteries gain energy through exposure to oxygen. Therefore, to activate a hearing aid battery, users need to remove the sticker from the battery top allowing oxygen to mix with zinc-oxide inside the battery. Waiting a little longer before putting the battery into the device makes a difference. A recent study shows if users wait 5 minutes after pulling off the sticker, the battery will last 2-3 days longer.

Users can boost their battery’s life in some other ways: • Do not place hearing aids and batteries in extreme hot or cold places • Turn the hearing aids off when they are not used • Try not to be around too much loud noise • Wait enough amount of time before putting the battery in hearing aids after the sticker is peeled off • Keep the sticker on the hearing aid battery until you are ready to use them

I have heard there is a new vaccine available against pneumonia. How do I decide which one I should get?

Pneumonia is a serious lung infection with potentially dire consequences. Most people recover on their own at home, but others who are at higher risk, such as the old and the young, and people with low immunity or other diseases may require treatment in hospital. We definitely want to do what we can to prevent contraction of the infection as well as prevent the escalation of pneumonia.

The best way to prepare your immunity for a pneumonia infiltration is by getting the recommended series of pneumonia vaccines. There are currently two kinds of vaccines available: a sugar-, or “polysaccharide”-based vaccine called PNEUMOVAX 23™, and a newer protein-based vaccine, a “conjugate” vaccine called PREVNAR 13™. To elicit the strongest and most long-lasting, effective immune response, PREVNAR 13™ should be given first, followed by PNEUMOVAX 23™ given at least 8 weeks later (but preferably a year apart).

This is because PREVNAR 13™ can stimulate the memory cells in the immune system, so, when given first, this vaccine activates the memory portion of the immune system towards pneumonia. This process must be given adequate time to develop, hence a minimum of 8 weeks is required before you get the PNEUMOVAX 23™ shot to “boost” the response and memory for pneumonia protection. If you received a PNEUMOVAX 23™ shot before you turned 65 years old and 5 years has passed, then you should be getting one more dose of it when possible. Note that anyone who is allergic to diphtheriacontaining vaccines should not get a PREVNAR 13™ shot because it is attached to a diphtheria protein.

Your physician can best assess which vaccinations you require based on your history and current needs, and (s)he is the person you must seek for a proper diagnosis should you develop symptoms. No. Aside from the inherent risks of having your data on someone else’s computer, and that includes backup services, cloud based file sharing applications can also be malware delivery systems.We have on hand assorted malware items for testing and analysis purposes. I took a dozen of the newest ones and uploaded them to the usual cloud file storage services such as Google Drive and Dropbox. Most them transferred quite happily without so much as a bleep. No signature based antivirus products work that well so no surprise, but it underlines the fact that cloud based storage systems are not a solution to every malware or security issue – and indeed can become an issue in themselves.

There are now firewalls and anti-virus products on the market that you can buy to protect yourself from malware on your cloud storage systems, and any attacks from your cloud storage system vendors too.

Are the Wildcats suddenly the team to beat in B.C.?

“Who knows where we will be in the next three months but what a great kickoff and great for them to know (of their potential),” added Kennedy. “They really didn’t think they were in that top group with three or four others teams but now they know they can play with them.

“Even when we had to sit Martha and Liz for a bit (with foul trouble in the third quarter) we kind of kept even with them and that was great to see. They are a much bigger team but we did a great job on the boards.”

he girls high school basketball season is only a week old and it’s hard to imagine the McMath Wildcats being any better than they were on Friday night.

A 29-point opening quarter and a sizzling 40 percent from threepoint range powered McMath to a stunning 82-67 home floor exhibition victory over the No. 1 ranked Abbotsford Panthers. The Wildcats received honourable mention status in the pre-season “AAA” poll thanks to returning the majority of players from last year’s team that was 12th at provincials.

The group is led by fourth-year member Abby Zawada who has established herself as one of the top shooting guards in B.C. She was at it again with 23 points and 14 rebounds against the Panthers but it was the additional support that was equally impressive.

Coming off a solid Grade 11 season, Martha Melaku is poised to do even more at the offensive end of the floor. She poured in 22 points on nine of 16 shooting. The Wildcats also got a big outing of Liz Kennedy — the Grade 10 forward who is already in her third-year at the senior level. She added 19 points.

“We shot the ball well and it was multiple people doing it,” said Wildcats coach Chris Kennedy who is once again sharing the reigns with Anne Gillrie-Carre and Steve Flynn.

If we have more than one player scoring for us it’s such a key. It’s not all on Abby and team’s can’t key on one player.”

The Wildcats are not blessed with a lot of size.

If their offensive game was going to evolve it was going to take work beyond the usual practice time during the season. Liz Kennedy was most noted for her work in the paint last season as a rebounder and she usually had to defend larger and older post players. She was

The 20-year-old Richmond native and captain of the Swift Current Broncos is third in Western Hockey League scoring with 53 points, including 23 goals, in just 27 games. Gawdin is only six points shy of matching his career best of 59 which was established a year ago in 52 games.

Much of his damage has been done playing on

a line with Finnish import Aleski Heponiemi and Tyler Steenbergen. They have compiled 66 and 61 points respectively, giving the Broncos the top three scorers in the league.

Gawdin also recently signed a three-year entry level deal with the Calgary Flames.

Initially selected in the fourth round (116th) by St. Louis in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, Gawdin was unsigned by the Blues but was invited as a

free agent to Calgary’s training camp and made an impression at the Young Stars Classic tournament in Penticton.

The McRoberts graduate grew up through Richmond Minor’s hockey programs before shifting over to Seafair’s top Bantam team where some impressive numbers led to being selected fifth overall by the Broncos’ in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft.

he Richmond Sockeyes are riding a fivegame win streak into the next round of their Tunnel Cup rivalry series with the Delta Ice Hawks and not standing pat either.

The Sockeyes (15-5-1-2) have not only won four straight since handing the Pacific Junior Hockey League leading Ice Hawks (22-2-0) a 3-0 defeat back on Nov. 14, they made several player moves prior to the league-imposed Dec. 1 roster cutdown date.

The club has welcomed forwards Mitch Newsome (20) and Calder Newson (18), along with defenceman Kyle Dion (20) and goaltender Jason Mailhiot (19). To free up spots, forwards Austin Cook, Brendan Marfleet were traded to Aldergrove, while Seamus Collins has joined Chase of the Kootenay league. All three 18-year-olds will benefit from more ice time.

Mailhiot was acquired with Jacob Latrace still on the long road to recovery from a high ankle sprain. The Richmond native has been sidelined since Sept. 28 and has only begun light skating this week.

“We took Jacob off of (a player’s) card because we know each other well enough,” explained Sockeyes head coach Steve Robinson. “He is walking a tightrope as far as time goes and that injury can be tricky. From a personal side, I am cheering for him and we will see how it goes.

“I feel sad for the other guys because

they wanted to be here but under the same token there is the crunch for numbers and everybody has expectations of being the team that can compete with Delta and for the Cyclone. That’s the methodology we are going with.”

Newsome has spent the past three seasons playing in the B.C. Hockey League including most recently with Coquitlam where he had nine points in 15 games.

When his rights were traded to Humboldt he wished to stay in B.C. and was headed to junior “B” in Campbell River when the Sockeyes swooped in. Newson began the season in Weyburn, while Dion has been out of hockey the past two years after playing with Richmond.

“He has a natural knack for the game. You could just see his progression over the three practices he skated with us,” continued Robinson. “You could also see he was a gamer who could play.”

Thursday’s game (7 p.m. at Minoru) is the first of three in four nights with Richmond also heading to Abbotsford Friday and Grandview on Sunday. The season series with Delta stands at 1-1 with two games left to play.

“You know they are going to come out swinging after that loss and it will bring out the best in our guys. No matter what happens and I’m sure it will be a great game.”

CUNNINGHAM, Brandon Devon January 29, 1990 - November 28, 2017 It is with great sadness to announce the sudden passing of Brandon, a beloved son and a father.

Brandon is survived by his mother, Sandra Stallwood; son Troy Uher; siblings, Nakita, Ryan, Joseph, Nicholas, Marina Weis, and Josh Hall; his grandmothers, Sharon Johnson and Shirley Stallwood; and many cousins, uncles and aunts. He was predeceased by his father, Gregory Cunningham; grandfathers, Arlen Johnson and George Stallwood.

Brandon attended school in Richmond and was an active volunteer of organizations to do with less fortunate and homeless people, including Gilmore United Church. Brandon enjoyed music, art and was very creative. He will be remembered for his kind heart and compassionate ways.

There will be a Memorial Service on Thursday, December 7 at 2:00 p.m. at Ladner United Church, 4960 48 A Street, Ladner, B.C. In lieu of flowers, donations to Union Gospel Mission, 601 East Hastings Street, Vancouver, B.C; or Covenant House, 326 W Pender Street, Vancouver, B.C.
