Tonight’s Lead Patron

Dominion [NYSE:D] is a home-grown Richmond company with roots extending back to the Colonial era. By the early 1900s, the company began operating as an electric and gas utility under the name Virginia Electric & Power Co. That utility is now known as Dominion Virginia Power, and it is in its second century as a provider of electric service to the citizens of Virginia. With about 4,300 employees in the Richmond area and more than 9,000 throughout the Commonwealth, today’s Dominion plays a vital role in supporting the state’s economy. Along with helping to meet Virginia’s energy needs, Dominion is a leading provider of energy and related services in the Midwest, mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions of the U.S.—a market of 60 million homes and businesses where 40 percent of the nation’s energy is consumed. Dominion now serves more than 5 million utility and retail energy customers in 13 states.

Good corporate citizenship and responsible environmental stewardship are integral to Dominion’s business mission. The company’s philanthropic arm, the Dominion Foundation, provides financial support to qualified nonprofit organizations in communities where the company does business. In addition, employees contribute more than 100,000 hours of volunteer service to their communities each year. Among Dominion’s leading outreach programs are EnergyShare, which provides financial assistance to customers who need help paying their energy bills; Project Plant It!, which distributes tree seedlings to thousands of elementary students to help them learn about the environment; and Strong Men and Women in Virginia History, an educational partnership program that provides young people with role models of accomplished African-Americans. THE SOUNDTRACK OF LIFE IS ELECTRIC There is a soundtrack that accompanies your every day – whether it’s the rolling tumble of the dryer or the coffee pot dripping with your morning cup. But what we often consider background noise is actually an electric score that accompanies our lives. It’s a rich symphony of cadences and clicks, buzzes, bells, whistles and whirs, and it’s there all the time.

Born in New York City in 1936, Alan Alda spent his early years traveling by train to theaters across the country with his father, Robert, a performer in vaudeville and burlesque shows. In fact, Alda first appeared on stage as a baby in burlesque sketches. After graduating from Fordham University, Alda made his Broadway debut in 1959 and received his first Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in the musical The Apple Tree in 1966. Alda’s film career took flight following his portrayal of writer George Plimpton in the 1968 football comedy Paper Lion. His articulate and intelligent style led to appearances as a panelist on TV programs such as What’s My Line? and I’ve Got a Secret in the early 1970s. In 1972, Alda auditioned for the role of Hawkeye Pierce in the TV adaptation of the 1970 film M*A*S*H. His portrayal of the irreverent and quick-witted battlefield surgeon earned Alda five Emmy Awards and 21 nominations. The beloved series’ 1983 finale still stands as the most-watched episode of any broadcast television series in history. He remains the only person to receive Emmys for acting, writing, and directing for the same series and was inducted

into the Television Hall of Fame in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the medium. While working on M*A*S*H, Alda also appeared in a number of well-known films, including Neil Simon’s California Suite (1978) and The Seduction of Joe Tynan (1979). After M*A*S*H, Alda focused almost exclusively on movie roles, appearing in comedies such as Sweet Liberty (1986), the Woody Allen films Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989) and Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993), and the new Steven Spielbergdirected film, Bridge of Spies (2015). Already an accomplished screenwriter, Alda published his first memoir, Never Have Your Dog Stuffed: And Other Things I’ve Learned, in 2005. He holds the distinction of being nominated for an Oscar (for The Aviator), a Tony (for Glengarry Glen Ross), an Emmy (for The West Wing), and becoming a bestselling author all in the same year. In 2007, he released his second book, Things I Overheard While Talking to Myself. For most, this would be an exceptionally full career. But for more than 20 years, Alan Alda has also worked to help broaden the public’s understanding of science. He hosted the awardwinning PBS series Scientific American Frontiers for 11 years, interviewing hundreds of scientists around the world, and in 2006, he received the National Science Board’s Public Service Award. In 2009, he helped found the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University in New York, where as a visiting professor, he leads workshops training scientists to communicate more effectively. The Center has grown to include affiliated programs at ten other universities across the country. The very model of a Renaissance man, the inimitable Alan Alda says, “I’ll continue to work until well after I’m dead.”

In 1991, The Butterbean Jazz Quartet was formed by Zip Irvin, John Winn, and Jim Dudley. They began a weekly Sunday evening gig at Bottoms Up Pizza; that gig has become a mainstay in Richmond’s historic Shockoe Bottom. Over the years, members of the quartet have changed. The current lineup is Lee Covington (piano), Terri Simpson (vocals), Rusty Farmer (acoustic bass), and Keith Willingham (drums). Sitting in tonight for Rusty Farmer is Brian Cruse. The Butterbean Jazz Quartet specializes in

traditional jazz vocal standards as well as more contemporary pop hits of the last 20 years. All members have contributed musical arrangements that have helped the group develop a unique and intimate sound. The quartet members met during their undergraduate studies at VCU. Since then, they’ve performed extensively throughout Virginia, including a recent performance for the Richmond Jazz Society’s Guest Educators Series. In 2008, Terri Simpson received Richmond Magazine’s prestigious Theresa Pollak Prize for Excellence in the Arts. In 2009, the quartet released their debut album through Courthouse Records; the album can be found at cdbaby.com.

Our 2015–2016 Richmond Forum Scholars Engaging students from the region’s public and independent schools in our programs has always been an important aspect of fulfilling the mission of The Richmond Forum. This season, 50 students are participating in our page program, seating patrons and collecting questions during intermission. Another 500 students will attend our sold-out programs in our Student Viewing Room, where they will also have the unique opportunity to interact directly with our speakers, and 550 students will hear a keynote from former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard when the Governor’s School Model United Nations convenes in March. In another very successful student program, now in its third season, five of the region’s highest achieving and most impressive high school juniors have been selected to serve as Richmond Forum Scholars. Students from around the region submitted applications, essays, and letters of recommendation, hoping to be selected for this honor. All of the applicants were remarkable in their academic standing and impressive extra-curricular activities. Twenty

students were chosen for personal interviews, and five outstanding students were ultimately selected as our 2015–2016 Richmond Forum Scholars. They are: Peyton Badura – James River High School Frederick Hayton – James River High School Nadine Lin – Douglas Freeman High School Matty Pahren – Collegiate School Dharaa Rathi – Maggie L. Political philosopher Michael Sandel (above and right) challenged the audience to engage in the civil debate of principles and question what is fair, what is right, and what is moral.

Charlie Vaughters, Senior Commercial Banking Relationship Manager, First Tennessee Bank, a Producer Patron for the evening, was an eager participant in engaging with Professor Sandel, as were students, a music teacher, and a “central banker.” Jeffrey Lacker, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond weighed into the debate (lower right).

“I enjoyed the format of his presentation. Engaging the audience to help shape the conversation made the topic come to life. I’m a very black & white thinker— very little gray—however, he had me questioning myself in a couple of scenarios.” Subscriber survey comment

We believe in the ripple effect Just like a single stone tossed into a body of water, a single interaction can have a ripple effect in someone’s day. So many of our interactions each day are with companies, so shouldn’t we make them great ones? If someone walks away from an experience with your business with a smile on their face, you can change their day. If you change enough days, you change the world.

James Balog Eyewitness to a Changing World February 13, 2016

For more than 30 years, photographer James Balog has broken new ground by integrating art and science to document changes to our planet’s natural systems. In 2007, Balog founded the Extreme Ice Survey, the most wide-ranging, ground-based, photographic study of glaciers ever conducted. The Emmy Award-winning documentary Chasing Ice was based on his work. In February, Balog, who holds a graduate degree in geography and geomorphology, will bring his stunning, eyewitness views of the world’s most rapidly changing landscapes to The Richmond Forum.

Makelaug hterreal. My dream job is to be like Tina Fey — write, act, produce and have my hand in everything, as long as it’s comedy. The classes I’ve taken focus on honing your genre and making sure you are making quality work. VCU has definitely inspired me to be more creative in everything I do. And that’s no joke.
