The company has deep roots in the Commonwealth of Virginia, dating back to 1787 when it was founded to improve river navigation and canal transportation. We power the companies that power our economy. It takes 16,000 Dominion Energy employees, from the linemen you see maintaining the grid every day, to biologists and engineers, arborists, electricians and mechanics — all of us working together to deliver the reliable, affordable, cleaner energy that keeps the wheels of commerce moving. And a $15 billion investment in our electric and natural gas infrastructure will ensure Virginia’s growing economy has the resources to grow even more. Dominion Energy. Always On.

Actress Glenn Close is a beloved and acclaimed performer whose powerful portrayals have graced the stage, screen, and television for four decades. From her Broadway beginnings in Barnum, to critically acclaimed performances in Fatal Attraction, FX’s Damages, and the Tony Award-winning musical Sunset Boulevard, Close enthralls audiences with very human characters that reflect the best and worst in all of us. Close received three Tony awards for her performances in The Real Thing, Death and the Maiden, and Sunset Boulevard. She recently reprised her Boulevard role as fading film star Norma Desmond for London’s West End in 2016 and on Broadway in 2017. Close made her film debut in The World According to Garp in 1982, receiving an Academy Award nomination for her performance. She went on to receive five additional Oscar nods for performances in The Big Chill, The Natural, Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liaisons, and Albert Nobbs. Other popular films that she has appeared in include Jagged Edge, Reversal of Fortune, Air Force One, 101 Dalmatians, and Guardians of the Galaxy. Her performance in Fatal Attraction was ranked 36th on Premiere’s list of the 100 greatest movie characters of all time. Some of her recent projects include Father Figures, starring Owen Wilson and Ed Helms, Netflix’s What Happened to Monday, The Girl with All the Gifts, The Wife, and Amazon’s Sea Oak. For her television work, Close won an Emmy Award for the TV film Serving in Silence, plus a SAG Award and a Golden Globe for her performance in Showtime’s The Lion in Winter. She won a Golden Globe and an Emmy for her role as Patty Hewes in the FX drama series Damages. The Los Angeles Times said, “Close’s performance illuminates rather than outshines
with its high wattage.” Airing for five seasons, the show garnered over 50 nominations and won 11 awards, including 4 Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and a SAG Award. Close was born and raised in Greenwich, Connecticut, to socialite Bettine Moore Close and doctor William Taliaferro Close. When Close was seven, her father brought the family into a religious group known as Moral ReArmament (MRA) that dictated their beliefs and way of life. It took Close 15 years to find a way to leave the group, which she did by enrolling at the College of William & Mary (Class of 1974) to study theatre and anthropology. In 2009, in response to her sister Jessie’s diagnosis with bipolar disorder, Close founded Bring Change to Mind, a charity whose mission is to fight the stigma that surrounds mental illness. The two sisters and Jessie’s son, Calen Pick, act as ambassadors for the organization and use Close’s celebrity to promote mental health awareness. Close is a trustee emerita of Sundance Institute and a trustee of the Wildlife Conservation Society.

LOVING, filmed in Virginia
Mountain Lake in Dirty Dancing. Richmond’s beautiful State Capitol in Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln. The cobbled streets of Petersburg in PBS’ hit series Mercy Street and AMC’s TURN: Washington’s Spies. Small-town magic in Big Stone Gap. Rolling country fields in Loving and Lassie. And now, bustling city streets in Showtime’s Homeland. Filmmakers always find a perfect palette in Virginia. Virginia offers the picturesque setting, but it is the monumental talent of artists such as this evening’s honoree that brings these locations to life and helps them live on in the audience’s memories. Creativity and the arts are fundamental ingredients needed to build a strong, well-rounded community. In Virginia, the film industry not only helps foster talent and tell meaningful stories; it is a significant contributor to the economy, employing 4,000 Virginians and contributing around $600M in total economic impact annually. Filmmaking, storytelling, and the art and business of cinema have had an important impact on Virginia, and we thank industry leaders like tonight’s guest for the wonderful contributions they have made to this celebrated craft.
Tonight, we join our colleagues in welcoming the immensely talented Glenn Close, whose iconic roles and acclaimed performances throughout her renowned career have helped build the art form into what it is today. She has also shown a keen understanding of how the power of film can inspire positive change. We offer our warmest welcome and thanks to Ms. Close for all she has done for the industry, and our sincerest congratulations to the talented team of the Richmond Forum for bringing together this unparalleled evening of arts, culture and continued learning for the Richmond community. Welcome back to Virginia, Ms. Close!

Norma Desmond from Sunset Boulevard (1993 Los Angeles, 1994 Broadway, 2016 West End, 2017 Broadway) In the musical adaptation of the 1950 film, Sunset Boulevard’s Norma Desmond is an aging silent film star who lives a Havisham-esque life consumed by her former glory in an old Sunset Boulevard mansion. Desmond’s butler, Max, protects her selfindulgent delusions of grandeur and limelight by writing letters from supposed fans. When a struggling screenwriter, Joe Gillis, comes into her life, she seizes an opportunity to return to the silver screen. Desmond is forced to confront the realities of her faded stardom, and the truth sends her spiraling out of control. Alex Forrest from Fatal Attraction (1987 film) Alexandra ‘Alex’ Forrest is an editor for a publishing company who has an affair with Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas). She becomes obsessed with him, even when he tries to tell her he can no longer see her. Alex attempts suicide by cutting her wrists, she stalks Dan at his workplace, tries to buy his family’s home when it goes up for sale, pours acid on his car, and kills a beloved family pet. Close received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for the role, which has been called one of the greatest movie characters of all time. Patty Hewes from Damages (2007-2012 TV series on FX/DirecTV) Patty Hewes is a powerful lawyer who manages the successful New York City law firm Hewes & Associates. Hewes has a reputation for being ruthless, yet brilliant. Her no-nonsense attitude garners respect from her colleagues and subordinates—and a healthy amount of fear.

The complexity of the character shines through her maternal relationship with new associate Ellen Parsons, her multi-faceted approach to her clients and opponents, and her strained relationship with her father. Close’s performance is at one moment heartless then overwhelmingly compassionate, creating the compelling character that earned Close two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Margarethe Cammermeyer from Serving in Silence (1995 TV film) Based on Margarethe Cammermeyer’s autobiography, Serving in Silence follows the true story of Colonel Cammermeyer’s fight against being discharged from the Washington National Guard for her sexuality during the era of “don’t ask, don’t tell.” NBC’s made-for-television docudrama, executive produced by Close, received six Emmy Award nominations and won three. The film also received a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding TV Film. Albert Nobbs from The Singular Life of Albert Nobbs (1982 Off-Broadway) and Albert Nobbs (2011 film) Albert Nobbs is the titular character of the 1977 play by Juliet Berto and the 2011 film produced by and starring Glenn Close, who also starred in the 1982 Off-Broadway production of The Singular Life of Albert Nobbs. In addition to her roles as producer and star, Close co-wrote the screenplay and wrote the lyrics for the theme song of the film, “Lay Your Head Down,” composed by David Byrne and performed by Sinéad O’Connor. living rarely afforded to women. When the hotel hires Hubert Page to paint a room in the hotel, Nobbs finds in Page not only a lover, but a kindred spirit and a model for his life.
It began with a surprising revelation from Glenn Close’s sister, Jessie, in 2004: She wanted to kill herself. Jessie Close was then hospitalized and diagnosed with bipolar disorder at –Glenn Close the age of 45. Glenn was shocked. She had no idea about her sister’s disease, let alone how unbearable the struggle had become. Close realized how little she understood about mental illness. Jessie’s son, Calen, was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder soon after. Jessie urged Glenn to “help battle the stigma and misunderstanding of mental illness.” She couldn’t bear Calen losing all of his friends and being unable to find resources to help him; she felt powerless. In 2009, Glenn Close founded Bring Change to Mind, a non-profit organization dedicated to ending the stigma and discrimination surrounding mental illness, in response to her family’s experience. Glenn and Jessie Close and Calen Pick act as ambassadors for the organization and use Glenn’s celebrity to advocate for mental health awareness.
One day my sister—we were visiting my parents—my sister came up to me, and she said ‘I need help. I can’t stop thinking about killing myself.’ And that pulverized me.

President Bar ack Obam a An Evening with the 44th President of the United States In November, President Barack Obama followed Presidents George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush in addressing The Richmond Forum. The evening was the largest in Richmond Forum history—over 6,500 people attended the program, including 2,000 watching via satellite at the Carpenter Theatre.
“Congratulations to The Forum for landing one of the most sought after speakers in years. And I was super proud of the audience for treating him with the dignity and respect that he and his former office deserve. Clearly not everyone in the audience was a Democrat, but everyone was a class act and for that RVA can be proud. Who says there’s no civility anymore?” Subscriber comment
Aaron M. Reid, a senior at Lloyd C. Bird High School introduced President Obama. In 2009, when he was just nine years old, Reid memorized Barack Obama’s 2008 victory speech and recited an excerpt at The Forum. Following Reid’s introduction, Mr. Obama said that Aaron “might have done that speech better than I did.”
Bill Chapman greeted Carroll D. Swenson, Richmond Area Market President, Wells Fargo, the Lead Patron for the evening, and his daughter before the program.

No one ever plans on losing their job, their home, their family. Our journey together started long ago. Our commitment to community has been our mission since day one. Planning for and supporting the well-being of all we serve is part of our DNA. Caring for everyone, no matter what, is our responsibility. Our passion. Every single thing we do is to make sure everyone in Virginia is headed for a healthier tomorrow.
Making life better, by design.

Dancing together A dance between a 91-year-old and a 26-year-old is not something you see every day. The PALETTE program aims to change that in the name of transcending the generational divide. By connecting health professions students and senior adults through art, participants create meaningful relationships that redefine the way clinicians and patients interact, ultimately improving the level of care. The Pollak Society supports initiatives like PALETTE in the School of the Arts, enabling VCU students to challenge the norm. That’s how they make it real.
