The world around us is evolving rapidly. Dominion Energy is determined not only to respond to that evolution, but to drive it forward. More and more our customers rely on electricity to power their lives. At home, at school, at work and increasingly on our roads, electricity is critical to nearly every part of our day. We have 9,000 employees throughout Virginia—with about half of that number in the Richmond area—dedicated to ensuring you can rely on electricity to power your life. Plus, we’re investing in a smarter grid to minimize outages and speed restoration. Our customers are also looking for clean energy. We’re committed to having 3,000 megawatts of solar and wind power in operation or under development across the Commonwealth by 2022—enough to power 750,000 homes. Plus, we’re now building the first offshore wind project in the mid-Atlantic, 27 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach, to

bring a new renewable resource to our customers for the first time. Our customers want to minimize their impact on the planet. We’re committed to helping them by lowering carbon emissions by 80% by 2050. Plus, we’re providing innovative solutions like autonomous shuttles and electric school buses in Virginia, to help reduce emission from the transportation sector, which is the largest source of emissions nationwide. Our customers want to know we’re giving back, as well. We’ve received national recognition for environmental stewardship, educational initiatives, and support for military veterans and their families. Plus, our dedicated employee volunteers perform more than 126,000 hours of community service each year, and Dominion Energy plans to contribute more than $40 million to community causes in 2019. We invite you to learn more at dominionenergy.com.

He won’t forget his family when he deploys. And neither will we. Veterans who work at Dominion Energy are in good company: 1 in 5 new hires has served in the military. And should they be deployed while on the job, we’ll proudly continue their family’s benefits for up to five years and cover the difference between their current salary and military pay. Because family watches out for family, and they’ll always be a part of ours.

Named “National Sportscaster of the Year” an unprecedented eight times, Bob Costas has been a prominent player in the coverage of every major sport and 12 Olympic Games over the past four decades. His thoughtful commentary on a variety of issues, including traumatic brain injuries in football, has made him a distinctive voice of his generation. Bob Costas holds 28 Emmy Awards—the most of any sports broadcaster—and is the only person to have won in each of three categories: sports, entertainment, and news. In addition to 26 sports reporting awards, Costas won an Emmy for his talk show Later with Bob Costas (1988–1994), and another for his 2011 postscandal interview with Jerry Sandusky. A native New Yorker, Costas began his career by announcing games for a local TV and radio station while studying communications at Syracuse University. Before completing a degree, he left Syracuse for a local sportscasting role in St. Louis and a three-year stint at CBS before joining NBC in 1980. Costas became a major figure in sports broadcasts over his 40 years at the network. During his tenure, he regularly called baseball games—his well-documented favorite sport— for Game of the Week, and covered a total of 12 Olympic Games, seven Super Bowls, seven World Series tournaments, ten NBA Finals, 18 runnings of the Kentucky Derby, and 12 U.S. Open golf tournaments. Costas also has become known over his career as one of the best interviewers in sports. In addition to his award-winning work on NBC’s Later, he was the host of HBO’s On The Record interview show, and the popular, nationally-syndicated sports radio talk shows Costas Coast to Coast (1986–1996) and Costas on

the Radio (2006–2009). Following the 2016 NFL season, Costas announced that he would stop hosting NBC’s Sunday Night Football, and would conclude his quarter-century run as host of the network’s Olympics coverage. He officially left NBC in January 2019. He has since joined the Major League Baseball Network, contributing interviews, commentary, and play-by-play as the host of Studio 42 with Bob Costas and in regular appearances on MLB Tonight and the network’s special event coverage. Costas received the 2018 Ford C. Frick Award for major contributions to baseball at the National Baseball Hall of Fame, awarded by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. He is also the New York Times bestselling author of Fair Ball: A Fan’s Case for Baseball (2000). Proceeds from the book were donated to Baseball Assistance Team (B.A.T.), a charity that provides financial assistance to those in need in the baseball family. Costas lives in New York City with his wife, Jill Sutton.

Tonight, longtime NBC12 sports director Ben Hamlin will pose your questions to Bob Costas during our audience Q&A. He last appeared at The Forum in 2009 to moderate a memorable conversation with legendary athletes Terry Bradshaw and Howie Long. A well-known face to Richmond sports fans, Hamlin worked in local television for 30 years at WWBT-12. He began his career at the station in 1978 while enrolled at Virginia Commonwealth University. Hamlin worked as a news photographer, sports reporter, and weekend sports anchor before stepping into his 22-year role as sports director. He covered local sports, college football bowl games, NCAA basketball tournaments, NASCAR races, two Super Bowls, and the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Hamlin participated in the Olympic torch relay in 1996, running a stretch of Franklin Street. A native of Portsmouth, Virginia, Hamlin moved to Richmond in 1977 after a three-year stint in the U.S. Army. He attended John Tyler Community College before transferring to VCU and graduating in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science in mass communications. Hamlin lives in Richmond with his wife, Hattie. They have two adult children, Kelly and Ben, Jr., and are the proud grandparents of Audrey and Ben III.

Organist Tedde Gibson is one of a few musicians comfortable with playing jazz, gospel, and classical music on the pipe organ. A native of Tacoma, Washington, Gibson began his piano training at age four and has since studied pipe organ, classical organ, classical improvisation, theatre organ, and voice. He cut his teeth performing on the premier classical and theatre organs of his home state before moving to Washington, D.C., in 2003. A versatile performer, Gibson is also a sought-after silent film accompanist who performs around the country, as well as a gospel and jazz organist. He has released two albums of organ music, At Last (2011) and Let There Be Praise, Vol. I (2011), performed on a restored Wurlitzer theatre organ. Gibson is the organist at several churches in the D.C. metropolitan area and teaches general music at Highland Park Christian Academy in Maryland. He serves as Vice Chairman of the American Theatre Organ Society. Tonight, Gibson will perform sports-inspired music on a Hammond B3 organ—a staple of 20th century ballparks—including his rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.” Listen at teddegibson.com.

Should College Student-Athletes Be Paid? According to the NCAA, more than 460,000 studentathletes are enrolled at colleges and universities around the United States. Schools award $3.5+ billion in annual athletic scholarships to 180,000 of those students each year. Currently, those student-athletes cannot be compensated for their efforts on the court or field. A California law passed in late September 2019 will allow players to sign endorsement deals and otherwise profit from their image and likeness beginning in 2023. It will not allow for salaries. The law reignited the debate over whether or not collegiate athletes should be allowed to profit from their sport.

Yes Proponents argue that players deserve some of the $14 billion generated annually by college athletics and shared among schools and the NCAA. No Opponents argue that students are not professional athletes and should prioritize learning, and that many already receive sports scholarships.

The Future of Sports Gambling In May 2018, the Supreme Court overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), clearing the way for states to decide whether or not to legalize sports gambling. Now it is up to state lawmakers. Virginia legislators are waiting to review a study that is due on December 1 before debating the issue in legislative sessions in 2020 and beyond. Outside of state congresses, further debate continues over whether and how legalized gambling might affect the experience of fans. The potential financial opportunity for industry stakeholders could change the way fans watch their favorite games. The NBA, for example, is now offering paid, time-specific streaming options for fans to watch only the fourth quarter—or any other bet-upon period.

What About eSports? eSports is organized competitive video gaming, often at tournaments or other competitions. The activity traces its origins back to arcade game competitions in the 1980s, but participation has grown exponentially in the past few years after the introduction of popular online games like Fortnite and new editions of Madden football and League of Legends. Sports industry analysts project that eSports will grow into a multi-billion dollar industry. Like in its real-life counterpart, players in the virtual sports world can net millions of dollars from winnings and endorsement deals. Fans of eSports watch their favorite players at live competitions and by streaming at home through video game screen-sharing platforms like Twitch.

The Fan Experience Factor After all of the practice and preparation by athletes and coaches to get each team to game day, there is a critical final ingredient: the fans. Even before kickoff or the opening pitch, fans gather to celebrate game day: they tailgate at the stadium, throw a cookout at home, or head out to their favorite bar. Their excitement drives the energy of the game. As they file into the bleachers, team mascots and cheerleaders rev up the crowds, a marching band or piped-in music plays through the stadium, and the smell of popcorn and beer permeate the air. The entire sports experience has created generations of tradition, nostalgia, and dedicated sports fans; it has solidified sports as a permanent part of American culture.

While accepting the Ford C. Frick Award I enjoy broadcasting baseball from his fellow baseball journalists at the more than anything I do. I still National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2018, feel more connected to baseball Bob Costas spoke about his love of the than any other game. –Bob Costas longest-running professional sport in America—our national pastime. Costas told of the times when he was 12 years old, sneaking into his dad’s car at night to tune in to the evening’s game on the radio, “calibrating that dial like a safecracker.” He listened to his favorite broadcasters—whose ranks he now has joined—capture the energy and excitement of being at the ballpark. “Baseball broadcasters,” Costas said, “are inseparable from the game itself.” A Fan’s Case for Baseball Excerpt from Fair Ball (2000)

Bob Costas poses for the cover of Fair Ball: A Fan’s Case for Baseball (2000). Photo: Suzy Gorman.

I do believe there’s a beauty and a certain romance to the game, a richness of history that other sports cannot match. But one can appreciate those things without drowning in sentimentality, or viewing the sport as a sacred institution that should be worshipped rather than watched. This hushed, reverent, emerald greensward view of baseball is fine, in small doses, but for the most part it wasn’t the way I was raised with the game, and isn’t how I view it today… This isn’t a commentator’s diatribe against the sport, but rather a fan’s case for baseball. What do I want? I think the same thing most baseball fans want: To see the game prove worthy of our devotion. To watch it move forward into the next century, while retaining the essence of what made it so worthwhile in the last one. And, in a word, to see baseball become fun again.

“Mickey Mantle was Baseball” Baseball is Costas’ favorite game; Mickey Mantle was his favorite player. Costas has long been known to carry a 1958 card of the Yankees center fielder in his wallet. Having had the opportunity to interview his hero in 1988, Costas also eulogized him in 1995: “I’m here not so much to speak for myself as to simply represent the millions of baseball-loving kids who grew up in the ’50s and ’60s and for whom Mickey Mantle was baseball.”

Richmond Region Speech & Debate Initiative In the time since we published our first annual Student Program Report in April, we have been busy preparing for the second year of the Richmond Region Speech & Debate Initiative (RRSDI). We are proud to present these updates about the Initiative:

From left to right: Siri Wiggins, Forum Education Committee Chair; Darrell Wilson, Assistant Director of Student Activities at the Virginia High School League; Sandra Wheeler, Forum Director of Student Programs; Mike Taylor, Executive Director of the Henrico Education Foundation; Jerrine Lee, Sports Development Manager for Richmond Region Tourism; and Bill Chapman, Forum Executive Director attend the 2019 NSDA Tournament in Dallas, Texas, in June.

2019 National Speech & Debate Association Tournament The highlight of our summer was sending a delegation from Richmond to Dallas, Texas, for the National Speech & Debate Association’s (NSDA) annual tournament in June. Each year, the tournament draws nearly 5,000 students from around the country to compete in various speech and debate events from dramatic interpretation and extemporaneous speaking to debating the issues of the day. Our Executive Director Bill Chapman and Director of Student Programs Sandra Wheeler were honored to serve as finals judges and the delegation learned the inner workings of running a tournament of this size and scope with the hope to host the national tournament in Richmond in the future.

Community and Curriculum Development In May, NSDA Executive Director Scott Wunn joined The Richmond Forum and local speech and debate educators and stakeholders for the official launch of the RRSDI. During his visit, he also met with local public school administrators to discuss how to leverage NSDA expertise to embed speech and debate components into high school English Language Arts curriculum. Through this close partnership with the NSDA, we will bring best practices from the nation’s top coaches and teachers to our schools and put the Richmond region at the forefront Mr. Wunn addresses local educators at the official launch of the Initiative on May 15, 2019. of speech and debate education.

“Dr. Temple Grandin guided me to a deeper understanding of what it means to be different and how incredibly hard it is to be extraordinary among ordinary people. May her visual thinking continue to lead us all toward greater compassion and acceptance of one another.” Subscriber comment

Lee Chapman introduced Dr. Temple Grandin to the Richmond Forum audience on behalf of Davenport & Company.

We welcomed pianist Matt Savage, who also lives with autism, to the Forum stage from Boston.

Peter Marcia of YouDecide conversed with Dr. Grandin at a reception before the evening’s program.

“The sensitivity the Forum evidenced in preparing the format, selection of John Donvan as interviewer and moderator, and selection of Matt Savage as soloist embraced Dr. Grandin’s unique message and allowed her to shine far past any presentation I’ve seen her give previously. Kudos to you for setting the stage so that we could fully appreciate Dr. Grandin’s wonderful personality. I was blown away!” Subscriber comment

Dr. Grandin and moderator John Donvan addressed audience questions during the Q&A.

Richmond-area students, our Richmond Forum Scholars, and audience members alike spent their evenings enjoying Dr. Grandin’s humor, stories, and unique way of seeing the world.

Dave Isay, Catherine Burns & Br andon Stanton How Our Stories Connect Us

Dave Isay (StoryCorps), Catherine Burns (The Moth), and Brandon Stanton (Humans of New York) each have gained millions of followers by sharing authentic and powerful stories from ordinary people—around a microphone, in front of a live audience, or with a camera and a question. At The Richmond Forum, these panelists will share samples of their work and lessons learned about how our stories connect us in today’s increasingly divided and digital world. Along with moderator John Donvan, they will explore the ways that we can connect more deeply with the people around us—whether across the dinner table, the street, the community, or the political divide.
