Altria’s companies have a strong American heritage stretching back 200 years. Our companies include some of the most enduring names in American business: Philip Morris USA, the maker of Marlboro cigarettes, and U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company, the maker of Copenhagen and Skoal moist smokeless tobacco, as well as John Middleton, manufacturer of Black & Mild cigars. We are guided by our Vision—to responsibly lead the transition of adult smokers to a smoke-free future—and we must be as intentional about supporting positive change in our communities as we are inside our walls. Altria is Moving Beyond Smoking™, leading the way in moving adult smokers away from cigarettes by taking action to transition millions to potentially less harmful choices—believing it is a substantial opportunity for adult tobacco consumers, our businesses and society. Altria’s smoke-free portfolio includes ownership of Helix Innovations, the maker of on! oral nicotine pouches, and an equity investment in JUUL Labs. We also hold a significant equity investment in AnheuserBusch InBev, the world’s largest brewer and a stake in Cronos Group, a leading Canadian cannabinoid company.

In addition to supporting responsible approaches to address tough industry issues, like reducing the health effects of tobacco products and preventing underage use, our companies are committed to strengthening the communities where we live and work. This includes focusing on our employees and suppliers, retailers across the U.S., and nonprofits to help our communities thrive. Our community giving priorities reflect the interests of our businesses, employees and communities, focused in a few areas: education and youth development, equitable & vibrant communities, workforce & economic equity, and protecting the environment. Our commitment to advancing racial, economic and social equity is embedded across these portfolio areas. By investing in these areas, we are working to make ongoing positive impact that responds to changes in our communities. Altria’s support for The Richmond Forum’s 2021-2022 season is part of our focus on equitable & vibrant communities, which supports high-quality cultural and social programs that help make opportunity more inclusive and attract diverse talent to Central Virginia. Despite losing his vision at age 14, Erik Weihenmayer is an accomplished climber, paraglider, skier, and kayaker who never allows blindness to interfere with his passion for pursuing an exhilarating and fulfilling life. Since his 2001 summit of Mount Everest, he has become one of the most sought-after speakers in the world, and tonight, he brings his powerful story to Richmond. Following his 2008 completion of the “Seven Summits”—climbing to the seven highest peaks of the world—word spread about Weihenmayer’s remarkable achievements. After his summit of Everest, he was honored with a TIME cover story detailing his conquest of the world’s highest peak. Since then, he has authored multiple books, including his memoir, Touch the Top of the World. For those who had known Weihenmayer, his propensity for taking on the loftiest of challenges came as no surprise. Even as the rare condition of retinoschisis began to rob him of his vision by age 14, he resisted the idea that blindness would sweep him to the sidelines of life. Weihenmayer established himself as a formidable varsity wrestler and a talented teenage rock climber. After graduating with a double major from Boston College, Erik Weihenmayer became a

middle school teacher and wrestling coach. It was atop the highest point in North America on Denali’s mountaintop, where his quest for adventure began to take shape. Erik’s triumphs over some of the world’s most intimidating mountains were fueling a growing aspiration to take the lessons he learned to help others shatter barriers in their own lives. To bring his ideas to life, Weihenmayer co-founded the No Barriers movement. Their mission is to help people with challenges (everyone, to some extent) face barriers head on with a pioneering spirit and foster communities that support a rich and meaningful life. To this aim, Weihenmayer continues to challenge himself to live a life without barriers. In 2014, he kayaked the entirety of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. Erik Weihenmayer’s presentations engage and inspire audiences by capturing lessons from his life and adventures. Through his ground breaking lifestyle, he has explored and defined what it means to live a No Barriers Life. Central to this journey is a mindset to continually challenge ourselves to grow and evolve—in Weihenmayer’s own words, to “climb” while others “camp.” As a blind adventurer, he understands better than most that barriers are real, not merely perceived, and that obstacles encountered can either stop us in our tracks, or we can figure out a way to propel ourselves to new places. This evening, Erik Weihenmayer will take us on a journey to discover the tools and insights to develop what he calls the “No Barriers Mindset,” sharing what it takes for individuals and groups to turn into the storm, convert challenges into greatness, and reach for seemingly impossible goals.

This evening our audience Q&A will be moderated by Jon Lugbill. For the past 29 years, Lugbill has been the executive director of Sports Backers, a nonprofit group that inspires active living in all corners of the Richmond region. The organization hosts many events that provide a celebration of this active lifestyle including the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k, organizes some of the nation’s largest training teams, works with a kids running program with tens of thousands of participants, offers dozens of free fitness classes every week in challenged communities, and actively advocates for infrastructure to make the region more bike and pedestrian friendly. In 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2016 the Sports Backers were voted America’s Best Sports Commission by the National Association of Sports Commissions. As an athlete, Jon won five individual and seven team world championship titles in whitewater canoe slalom and was 4th in the 1992 Olympic Games. He has been elected to the International Whitewater Hall of Fame and the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.

We help ambitious companies make waves. Like stones being tossed into water, human interactions have the power to make waves. For over 20 years, we’ve elevated the human experience in consulting because it’s great for people and great for business. And, like waves on the water’s surface, those results expand and spread. We’re proud to support The Richmond Forum and the inspirational Erik Weihenmayer.

This Richmond based band has been blazing a trail around the country for the past 15 years. A five-piece string band, The Whiskey Rebellion plays an original blend of high-energy acoustic music that is rooted in folk, but rounded out with an eclectic mix of styles that contribute to an original, rich, and rustic sound. The music itself is dynamic and complex, from the delicate sounds of a trickling mandolin on a moonlit Blue Ridge hilltop, to the sounds of an apocalyptic jam that could be the haunting soundtrack of fire falling from the sky. Nothing is off limits and these pickers are not afraid to push the boundaries of what it means to be a string band. They are informed by gleaming Psychedelic Rock and Roll, just as much as they are by dusty traditional Bluegrass. The Whiskey Rebellion was born in the shadows of the VCU campus when singer and

guitar player Ryan Phillips heard the sounds of a banjo while walking down Floyd Avenue. The sound led him to a front porch where he met Roy Myers. These two VCU students quickly formed the basis for what would become The Whiskey Rebellion. With the help of Tim Deibler on bass, Rudy Bzdyk on violin, and Garrett Wrenn on mandolin, this band has become what Richmond.com boldly referred to as, “the best thing to happen to Americana since 1776.”

PASSIONATELY SHAPING TOMORROW, TODAY. We’re proud to support The Richmond Forum as they bring new thoughts and perspectives that enhance our community and advance our world.

As Erik Weihenmayer defied any expectations placed upon a blind person and made his way to the summit of Denali in 1995, he was doing more than climbing. He was dreaming. Through strength, perseverance, and support, Weihenmayer was leading a life of adventure and he knew that his story could inspire others. In 2005,Weihenmayer joined forces with Global Explorers to create programs that impact children and adults through transformative experiences, tools, and inspiration. With the aim of people tapping into their inner hope, optimism, and resilience, the No Barriers mindset fosters a community of explorers who are determined to live life without barriers. Many of the programs No Barriers offers are in-person transformative experiences that challenge people of all ages and walks of life to embrace the No Barriers Life elements. Now more than ever, there are barriers that we all face as individuals and communities. It is true that humans are resilient, adaptive, and can overcome most any struggle. Despite barriers— both big and small—that each of us face, we can learn to push past them, reconnect with our purpose, and unleash the best in ourselves and others.

How can you embrace a life without barriers? Start with the elements. Vision creates a purpose that inspires you to give your best back to the world. Like a map that guides us to where we want to be in life, it is your purpose. Reach motivates you to move beyond your comfort zone. It acts as a call to challenge yourself, to push further than you ever have so that you can grow as a person. Pioneer through challenges by employing creative thinking and problem solving in order to overcome your barriers. The Rope Team is your support network, a team of people that you can collaborate and connect with to build community.

Alchemy encourages participants to take their life experiences and turn them into something positive by cultivating optimism and resiliency in the face of difficult challenges. Summits are gifts that we earn through perseverance; acknowledging the work and struggle behind our achievements and victories. Elevate your life by becoming a leader in your own communities. By sharing your experiences and what you have learned along the way, you can elevate yourself and others. Learn More about No Barriers: www.nobarriersusa.org

The Seven Continental Summits The Seven Summits are a feat of endurance, risk, and determination. These are the highest mountains of each of the seven traditional continents, listed in order of Weihenmayer’s ascents.

Aconcagua

Denali

Location: Alaska; North America Weihenmayer’s Climb: 1995

Denali means “the great one” in the native Athabascan language. The mountain rises steeply with an elevation gain greater than Mt. Everest. Weihenmayer remembers struggling to find his rhythm after hitting 14,000 feet, and though he struggled, he learned that some limits are real—“like the inability to climb a twenty-thousand-foot peak before acclimatizing to the thin oxygen. But many more limits were conceived and imposed in my mind, and there was a torturous beauty in crossing through them.”

Kilimanjaro

Location: Tanzania; Africa Weihenmayer’s Climbs: 1997, 2005

Formed by a massive volcanic event, the dormant stratovolcano Kilimanjaro has a snow capped peak that protrudes from the flat African savannah. On his first expedition in 1997, Weihenmayer married his wife, Ellie, at 13,000 feet on the Shira plateau. Weihenmayer climbed Kilimanjaro for a second expedition in 2005, accompanied by a fellow blind African mountaineer.

Location: Andes Mountain Range; Argentina and Chile; South America Weihenmayer’s Climb: After a failed 1997 climb, he succeeded in 1999.

Aconcagua is the highest point in the southern hemisphere, the highest point in the Americas, and the highest point outside of Asia. Many mountaineers refer to the peak as the “Slag Heap,” due to the fact that much of the mountain is covered by tumbling rocks. Aconcagua is also known for its relentless winds. During Weihenmayer’s first attempt, when he was just 1,800 feet from the top, the gale-force winds knocked their team back so much that they made the difficult decision to dismount. A year later, Weihenmayer’s team tried to conquer Aconcagua once more, and succeeded.

Vinson Massif

Location: Sentinel Range Mountains; Antarctica Weihenmayer’s Climb: 2000

of

the

Ellsworth

After a grueling air and land expedition from the tip of South America to subzero Antarctic camps, Weihenmayer’s team conquered the peak of Antarctica at -50° Fahrenheit, which only around 1,200 people have accomplished since 1966.

– Erik Weihenmayer, Touch The Top of The World

Mount Everest

Mount Elbrus

Since he began climbing, Erik Weihenmayer dreamt of Everest. The planning and training took three years total and he had been practicing the necessary skills with the four summits he had reached prior. For Everest expeditions in particular, Sherpas (experienced locals who are acclimated to the high altitudes) are indispensable for climbers to add to their teams. Some Sherpas balked at the perceived risk of a blind mountaineer, but once Nepalese Sherpas saw Weihenmayer’s ease of navigating, they agreed to ascend with him. After months spent patiently preparing and waiting to leave base camp to climb to the summit, their team endured extreme icefalls, high altitudes, and gusty winds to reach the top of the world. Weihenmayer still regards this team as one of his very best. On the 10th anniversary of the climb, the team celebrated by taking a group of injured veterans on a climb to a peak near Mt. Everest. The essence of this mission lives on in the No Barriers Warriors programs, formed to serve veterans.

In the war-torn boundary between Georgia and Russia stands Mt. Elbrus, at the crest of the Caucasus Mountains. Known for its ferocious weather and howling winds, shelter is available in old Soviet style ski resorts. Once he reached the summit, Weihenmayer skied down the mountain. “It’s essentially a 10,000-foot run...There’s nothing you can run into. You can turn anywhere you want...like flying through a cloud.”

Location: Himalayas; Nepal, Tibet, and China; Asia Weihenmayer’s Climb: 2001

Due to tectonic plate shifts, Mount Everest changes and grows in height! First surveyed at 29,002 ft in 1856, it was re-measured in 2020 in a joint venture between China and Nepal.

#5: Mount Everest Elevation : 29,031 ft Continent: Asia

#6: Mount Elbrus Elevation : 18,510 ft Continent: Europe

Location: Caucasus Mountains; Russia; Europe Weihenmayer’s Climb: 2002

Mount Kosciuszko

Location: Great Dividing Range; New South Wales, Australia Weihenmayer’s Climb: 2002

Mt. Kosciuszko is a day hike and, by far, the least difficult of the traditional Seven Summits. In fact, it’s climbed by thousands of tourists a year.

Carstensz Pyramid

Location: Sudirman Range; West Papua Province, Indonesia Weihenmayer’s Climb: 2008

Because of its remoteness in Oceania and the difficult technical climbing, some see Carstensz as the true Seventh Summit. Weihenmayer’s team climbed and crawled to the peak of the pyramid to complete a version of the seven summits that fewer than 100 mountaineers have accomplished.

#7: Mount Kosciuszko #8: Carstensz Pyramid Elevation : 7,310 ft Elevation : 16,024 ft Continent: Australia Continent: Oceania

A summit isn’t just a place on a mountain. A summit exists in our heart and minds. It is a tiny scrap of a dream made real, indisputable proof that our lives have meaning. A summit is a symbol that with the force of our will and the power of our legs, our backs, our two hands, we can transform our lives into whatever we choose them to be, whatever our hands are strong enough to create.

Gloria Steinem glor i a steinem w ith z a ina b sa lbi

February 19, 2022

Last month, iconic feminist Gloria Steinem took the stage with fellow activist, author, and friend Zainab Salbi to discuss the history and present challenges of the feminist movement. Steinem knows the importance of speaking and sharing with others, and in part credits her writing career to not wanting to have to talk so much. “Things happen when we are physically together that can’t happen on the written page.” When she first began presenting, Steinem was terrified of public speaking. She gave credit to sharing the stage with Salbi and other passionate activists during her career—including Alice Walker, Florence Kennedy, bell hooks, and others —creating a chosen family along the way. Steinem’s passion for women began at a meeting in a church basement in New York City, where she first heard other women speak about their abortions. Having her own abortion was something Steinem had kept secret for years, but when she realized 1 in 3 American women will seek out abortive services in their lifetime, a young Steinem began asking questions as to why

governments could control bodies with wombs. This brought about an interesting discussion reflecting on Salbi’s experience dealing with wartorn countries. Salbi remarked that based on her travels, you could tell a government’s political and socioeconomic trajectory based on how they treat the women of their society. While discussing the struggle for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), Steinem was critical of the American Constitution that was written “by guys for guys— white guys,” calling special attention to Virginia’s importance in this legal battle for women. As the evening ended, Steinem was asked about one of her most famous quotes. “Without leaps of imagination, or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreaming, after all, is a form of planning.” When asked about what she’s dreaming about these days, Steinem candidly joked that both she and her publisher are dreaming of finishing her next book. Thank you for joining us for a special evening with an icon, and we’ll let you know when that book comes into the world.

Subscriber Survey Comments:

Steinem seems to have lost some of her “fire.” I found her responses to be too succinct; I wanted elaboration. Salbi helped when she described experiences or scenarios that helped me understand Steinem’s responses.

Zainab Salbi may be worth having her own forum. What an incredible story and impact she has had.

I hope I can be half as articulate when (or if) I am 87! I did not know if I would like what Gloria had to say. As a young man, I grew up with a bias against what she stood for, although I did not know the “why” of her positions. After listening to her, I was impressed with her stances on issues and leadership. I very much enjoyed listening to her.

During the Student Room portion of the evening’s program, Ms. Steinem visited 81 local students and teachers and answered questions about her pioneering attitude.

At the VIP reception, Ms. Steinem was very gracious in meeting with Richmonders like Helen Anne Hodges, a local student who sees Ms. Steinem as a role model.

At the end of the February program, Ms. Steinem encouraged attendees to branch out and exchange ideas with those sitting next to them. We encourage you to remember her wise words this evening and bring them to life!

Steinem partially credits her health at the age of 87 to choosing what felt best for her, a life with no children, doing what she loves with people she truly loves.

Intelligence Squared U.S. Debates

Can Humans Adapt To Climate Change?

With a mission to restore critical thinking, facts, reason, and civility to American public discourse, Intelligence Squared U.S. (IQ2US) has presented nearly 200 Oxford-style debates since 2006 on the most critical issues of the day. Moderated by friend of The Forum John Donvan, IQ2US debates are heard by public radio and podcast listeners and seen on Bloomberg Television as “That’s Debatable.” In response to our survey of Forum subscribers for requested program topics, we are pleased to partner with IQ2US to present an exclusive debate focused on climate change.

The Debate Motion: Humans Can Adapt to Climate Change The dangers of climate change are “no longer over the horizon.” Humanity may soon pass the “point of no return.” These are the phrases U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres used to describe what he called an “utterly inadequate” global response to rising temperatures. In fact, world leaders and environmental advocates have long demanded structural overhauls to the way we consume and produce. Standing in the way, Guterres noted, is a sheer lack of will. But if we were to decisively act, and restructure our global economy with the climate in mind, who would shoulder the burden? Is it actually feasible? Assuming finite resources, where does climate change rank in the pecking order of global problems? Or should our collective focus orient more toward humans’ capacity for adaptation?

Visit www.richmondforum.org/iq2us to learn about our debaters.

About Intelligence Squared U.S. Debates Intelligence Squared U.S. is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization working to address a fundamental problem in America: The extreme polarization of our nation and its politics. Considered the debate platform of record, it is widely distributed as a public radio program, podcast, online broadcast, television, and digital video series. Their debates focus across a gamut of topics that range from science, technology, and politics, to foreign policy, culture and the arts. Noted as Adweek ’s Podcast of the Year (2021) for “Best Podcast Event,” Intelligence Squared has recently racked up a bevy of accolades from the Telly awards, Clarion awards, and many more international festivals. The Oxford-style format is broken down into four sections: Opening remarks, a discussion, question-and-answers, and finally closing remarks. Two teams of experts engage in an Oxford-style debate. The audience votes twice; once before the debate, once afterwards. The side that changes the most minds is declared the winner.
