In June 2010, Julia Eileen Gillard was sworn in as the 27th Prime Minister of Australia after serving as the country’s Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the Australian Labor Party. She was the first woman to hold each of these positions. Her three years as Australia’s leader were electrifying and transformative, defined by policies focused on reforming her nation’s social priorities and its competitive position in a changing world economy. Gillard’s journey to become one of the most influential leaders in the world began in Barry, Wales, where she was born in 1961. Her family moved to Australia in 1966 and settled in Adelaide. She became an Australian citizen in 1974 and attended the University of Adelaide, where she was a leader in the student government. After earning degrees in law and arts from the University of Melbourne in 1986, she joined a private law firm and was made a partner in 1990, specializing in industrial law. Active in Labor Party politics since college, Gillard was first elected to Australia’s House of Representatives in 1998 and rose through key positions to become Deputy Prime Minister in 2007. In this role and as Prime Minster, she was central to the successful management of Australia’s

economy through the global economic crisis. In 2012, Gillard presented a policy white paper entitled Australia in the Asian Century, a comprehensive roadmap for positioning the country to take full advantage of Asia’s social and economic ascendance. The plan outlined 25 objectives for Australia to achieve by 2025, including a central goal that every Australian child learn an Asian language—in particular Mandarin, Japanese, Indonesian, or Hindi—and that they leave school having studied Asian culture. Gillard’s administration also pioneered new policies to restructure Australia’s public education system from early childhood through college, to improve the nation’s health care and disabilities programs, and to develop Australia’s first national broadband network. She strengthened the country’s alliance with the U.S. and built a new relationship architecture with China. Under her leadership, Australia was selected to host the 2014 G20 summit and was elected to the United Nations Security Council. In October 2012, Prime Minister Gillard received worldwide attention for delivering a powerful and impassioned speech in the Australian Parliament about the treatment of women in contemporary professional and public life. Through broadcast, print, and social media, the “Misogyny Speech” has been seen by millions and stands as a pivotal event in influencing international attitudes towards women in power. Following her tenure as Prime Minster, Gillard was appointed a non-resident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., working with the Center for Universal Education. In 2014, she was appointed Chair of the Board of the Global Partnership for Education and published her memoir, My Story.

Didge Evolution is a musical project created by master didgeridoo players Rob Thomas and Tanya Gerard. Didge Evolution takes the audience on a musical journey to the Australian Outback, coastal rainforests, Great Barrier Reef, and beyond. The didgeridoo, usually a hollowed-out tree trunk, has been played by Aboriginal people for at least 1,500 years and is known for its otherworldly sound. Didge Evolution plays a modern style, mixing fastpaced rhythms with relaxing soundscapes and organic sound effects. Rob and Tanya are true didgeridoo pioneers in the U.S., having played and made didges for more than 20 years. They’ve performed throughout the country, have recorded several CDs, and have produced music for numerous films, including the IMAX movie

Sacred Planet. They are founding members of the legendary tribal-trance project Inlakesh, and their breakthrough album, The Gathering, inspired a generation of didgeridoo enthusiasts. Tanya grew up in Australia. She and Rob live in North Carolina and perform year-round at K-12 schools, colleges, theaters, festivals, and other venues throughout the U.S. Find more info at www.didgrevolution.com

The Commonwealth of Australia comprises the mainland of the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania, and numerous surrounding islands. It’s the world’s sixth-largest country by total area. After the European discovery of the continent by Dutch explorers in 1606, Australia’s eastern half was claimed by Great Britain in 1770 and settled by importing convicted British felons to the colony of New South Wales, beginning in 1788. The population grew steadily in subsequent decades. An additional five self-governing crown colonies were established, and in 1901, the six colonies federated, forming the Commonwealth of Australia. Great Britain’s Statute of Westminster formally ended many of the constitutional links between Australia and Britain in 1931. Australia’s capital is Canberra; its largest cities are Sydney and Melbourne. The six continental states are: Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, and Western Australia. Its two state-like territories are Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory. Since federation, Australia has maintained a stable, liberal, democratic political system that functions as a federal parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy. The form of government corresponds largely with the British democratic tradition, yet is a unique mixture of the Westminster and United States systems. By the Constitution, the executive power of the Commonwealth is vested in a GovernorGeneral—a representative head of state appointed by the British sovereign, Queen Elizabeth II. In practice, the executive power is possessed by the Prime Minister and Cabinet (senior Ministers).

The Australian Parliament consists of two Houses: the Senate, of which 76 members are elected to six- or three-year terms, depending on whether they represent a state or territory; and the House of Representatives, with 150 members elected to three-year terms. There are four main political parties: Liberal, Labor, National, and Democratic. The Liberal and National Parties comprise the moderate-conservative “Coalition.” The party with majority support in the House of Representatives forms the government, and its leader becomes Prime Minister. Julia Gillard of the Labor Party became Australia’s first female Prime Minister in June 2010. The most recent federal election was held on September 7, 2013 and resulted in a majority government for the Coalition, after which Liberal Party leader Tony Abbott was sworn into office as Prime Minister. Malcolm Turnbull successfully challenged Abbott for leadership of the Coalition and was sworn in as Prime Minister on September 15, 2015. The distribution of federal and state powers is roughly similar to that of the United States.

Parliament House in Canberra was opened in 1988. Its design is based on the shape of two boomerangs and contains 4,500 rooms.

THE SOUNDTRACK OF LIFE IS ELECTRIC There is a soundtrack that accompanies your every day – whether it’s the rolling tumble of the dryer or the coffee pot dripping with your morning cup. But what we often consider background noise is actually an electric score that accompanies our lives. It’s a rich symphony of cadences and clicks, buzzes, bells, whistles and whirs, and it’s there all the time.

Important 2016–2017 Inform

Good Things Come So, For Our April 2017 Prog We’ll be announcing four amazing programs next month. And the fifth much later.

Every fall, we ask whom you would like to see speak at The Richmond Forum in the following season, and you always respond with some really incredible people. Unfortunately, some of those people we are simply not able to present due to our booking schedule. Our standard practice is to line up our speakers 12 to 18 months in advance of their program dates so that we can unveil our full season lineup to you in the spring—nearly eight months before the season begins. That model makes things neat and tidy for us and our subscribers, but doesn’t work for every speaker, including some of the biggest names that you ask us to bring to The Forum. There are many “A-list” names that simply can’t commit to an event over a year away—mostly those with quite busy “day jobs.” If we were to invite them much closer to our program date, however, we would have a real chance; they’ve told us this over and over. That’s why this January, The Richmond Forum board of directors approved a recommendation from our executive director to hold open our April 22, 2017 program date to be booked and announced later, and to hold back a large share of our speaker budget with the intent of booking a bigname speaker on that date. At this time, we don’t know whom that speaker will be, but we are excited by the potential names that this change in approach could bring to our stage.

Online Supscription Renewal: Les 2016–2017 Season Renewals

Last year, nearly 80% of our subscribers renewed their season subscriptions via our website and nearly one-quarter renewed before receiving our renewal packet in the mail. Given that, it makes sense for us to dramatically reduce the amount of paper that we generate at renewal time. Immediately following our season announcement at the April program, we will send our usual renewal e-mail to the primary e-mail address for each subscriber. As in past years, this e-mail will include your customer number and a PIN that will allow you to renew your subscription securely online, request seat upgrades, and update your contact information.

mation for Our Subscribers

to Those Who Wait. gram, We’re Going to Wait. When will the April 22, 2017 speaker be announced? Our plan is to announce this speaker

at our March 2017 program. It could be earlier. How can I renew if I don’t know all of the speakers? We hope that over the years The

Richmond Forum has earned your trust. We’ve made this decision to address a challenge in the way we book speakers so that we can bring you the best possible 2016-2017 season. If you’ve been with us for a few years, you will remember that our subscribers were asked to renew for the 20112012 season without knowing whom the January speaker would be. A few months later, we announced that speaker to be Robert Gates, who turned out to be the highest-rated speaker of the last eight seasons. This will be a similar situation, except the announcement will come much later.

-2017

nouncement

When will I receive my ticket for this program? You will receive all

of your tickets in October, as usual. On the April ticket, the speaker will simply be indicated as “TBA.” Is this going to be a new practice every season? Probably not; we’re

not sure we could handle the suspense every season! If this proves to be a well-received strategy, we may employ it from time to time as a means of securing amazing speakers we could not otherwise bring to our stage.

ss PAper. Less Postage. Less Delay. Because we know that it helps to have a physical reminder in your bills-to-pay stack, we will mail a greatly streamlined renewal announcement that will also contain the information that you need to log into the online renewal site. Don’t use e-mail, or prefer to pay by check?

We do have some wonderful longtime subscribers who don’t use e-mail. Don’t worry! We know who you are, and we will mail you a renewal packet as in previous years. If you do use e-mail but would still prefer to renew by mail so you can pay by check, just let us know and we’ll send you a form.

Makeconfide nc ereal. My experience gave me the confidence to always raise my hand, say yes to a task and dive into male-dominated fields like politics and banking. I went from intern to staffer for the Virginia Legislature tackling key policy issues; now I’m in government affairs at one of the world’s largest banks. Thanks to VCU, I don’t wait to be asked to sit at the table. I’m the one pulling up a chair.
