In the summer of 1960, 26-year-old Jane Goodall traveled from England to the shores of Lake Tanganyika—in what is now called Tanzania— to study the area’s chimpanzee population. Although it was unheard of for a woman to venture into the wild African forest, the journey meant the fulfillment of her childhood dreams. Equipped with nothing more than a notebook and binoculars as she first surveyed the mountains and forests of the Gombe, she had no idea her efforts would redefine the relationship between humans and animals. In the more than 50 years to follow, the renowned primatologist and conservationist has become a globe-trotting international icon, a U.N. Messenger of Peace, a Dame of the British Empire, and the subject of countless articles, books, and television programs around the world. Today, Dr. Goodall’s work centers on inspiring action on behalf of endangered species and encouraging people to do their part to make the world a better place for people, animals, and the environment we all share. An iconoclast from the start, Dr. Goodall defied scientific convention by giving her chimpanzees names instead of numbers and insisted on the validity of her observation that chimps possessed distinct personalities and emotions. She also wrote of lasting chimpanzee family bonds and detailed how they engaged in organized warfare. One of Dr. Goodall’s most significant discoveries came when she saw chimps stripping leaves off stems to make instruments for extracting termites from earthen mounds. Subsequent observations of chimps making and using other tools forced scientists to rethink “man the toolmaker,” the fundamental distinction that had, before Dr. Goodall’s discovery, separated man from other animals.
Only four years after arriving in Africa, Dr. Goodall established the Gombe Stream Research Center. Under the stewardship of Tanzanian staff and other researchers, it continues Dr. Goodall’s work to this day, making it one of the longest uninterrupted wildlife studies in existence. In 1977, Dr. Goodall founded the Jane Goodall Institute for Wildlife Research, Education and Conservation to provide ongoing support for field research on wild chimpanzees. The Institute’s mission is to advance the power of individuals to take informed and compassionate action to improve the environment for all living things. Her Roots and Shoots program, which Goodall started with Tanzanian students in 1991, is today the Institute’s global environmental and humanitarian education initiative for students from preschool through college, with nearly 150,000 members in more than 120 countries. Dr. Goodall’s list of authored publications is extensive, including two autobiographies and numerous children’s books. Goodall’s book, The Chimpanzees of Gombe: Patterns of Behavior, published in 1986, is recognized as the definitive work on chimpanzees.

STABILITY:
We work really hard to be this boring. Stability is often viewed as unexciting. Yet, by focusing our decisions based on their long-term viability, we are able to maintain our financial strength on your behalf. We are careful not to risk too much, and not to research too little. The truth is, it takes an awful lot of effort to stay reliable. And we’ve put that work in daily since 1863.

Founded in 1977, the Jane Goodall Institute is a nonprofit organization that continues Dr. Goodall’s pioneering research on chimpanzee behavior—research that continues to transform scientific perceptions of the relationship between humans and animals. Yet research is merely one of the Institute’s ambitious, global objectives. The Institute’s mission is to: • Improve worldwide understanding and treatment of great apes through research, public education, and advocacy; • Contribute to the preservation of great apes and their habitats by combining conservation with education and promotion of sustainable livelihoods in local communities; • Create an international network of young people who have learned to care deeply for their human community, for all animals, and for the environment, and who will take responsible action to care for each. In the 1980s, the effects of rampant deforestation, illegal poaching, exotic pet trades, and infectious disease compelled Goodall to shift her focus from research to conservation. She began traveling the world, educating the public and policymakers about the interconnection between people, animals, and the environment.
For example, while flying over the Kigoma region outside the Institute’s Gombe Stream Research Center in Tanzania, Goodall saw tropical hillsides denuded in every direction, right up to the park boundary. She realized that a broad vision for species conservation had to address the needs of the human population in the surrounding habitat. As a result, the Institute started the TACARE (Take Care) program, a communitycentered conservation and development initiative that partners with local leaders to create sustainable livelihoods for families while promoting conservation goals. Such projects now cover nearly six million sub-Saharan acres, and 60 million more are targeted. Recently, in conjunction with the United Nations, the Institute launched pilot projects, totaling $3.7 million, aimed at reducing carbon emissions from deforestation and forest degradation. Under Goodall’s direction, the Institute focused international attention on individual chimpanzees in need, many of whom were infants orphaned by “bushmeat hunters” and then sold on the black market or kept imprisoned as pets. In response to these threats, the Institute’s sanctuary program was born and is now the largest chimpanzee sanctuary in Africa. Whether renovating health care clinics in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, improving and protecting sources of drinking water in remote villages, delivering seedlings for planting to reduce deforestation, or presenting breakthrough research on human aging, the Jane Goodall Institute has become a powerful yet profoundly human instrument for conservation and preservation. roots & shoots
Roots & Shoots Roots creep underground everywhere and make a firm foundation. Shoots seem very weak, but to reach the light, they can break open brick walls. Imagine the walls as all the problems we have inflicted on our planet. Hundreds of thousands of roots and shoots, hundreds of thousands of young people around the world, can break through those walls. —Dr. Jane Goodall Roots & Shoots is a program of the Jane Goodall Institute and is guided by Dr. Goodall’s founding principles and extraordinary vision. The program is about making positive change happen—for people, animals, and the environment. With tens of thousands of members in more than 120 countries, the Roots & Shoots network connects youth of all ages who share a desire to create a better world. This network enables young people to identify problems in their communities and to take action in a collaborative manner. Through service projects, youth-led campaigns, and an interactive website, Roots & Shoots is making a difference across the globe. Dr. Goodall’s firm belief is that young people, when informed and empowered, can indeed change the world. The Roots & Shoots program is dedicated to inspiring tomorrow’s leaders and motivates young people to learn about important issues facing our local and global communities. It helps them design, lead,
and implement their own projects as a means of addressing those issues—and the possibilities are as unlimited as young people’s imaginations. Roots & Shoots members take action around the world, wherever people come together with a common desire to make a difference—in classrooms, home schools, nature centers, neighborhoods, zoos, Scout troops, and beyond. This robust, youth-driven network fosters a fun, flexible, and supportive environment where young and old alike come together to share ideas and inspiration, implement successful community service projects, and participate in special events and global campaigns. The program provides extensive resources and networking opportunities for kids, teens, parents, educators, college students, group leaders, and supporters alike. It is uniquely designed to connect people of every age, race, culture, religion, or economic background in a vibrant network through which they learn, share, inspire, and enrich the world. quick chimpanzee facts
Quick Chimpanzee Facts Humans and chimpanzees share 95-98 percent of the same DNA.
Each night, chimpanzees make “nests to sleep in, and they never sleep in the same nest twice.
Chimpanzees make and use more tools than any other creature except human beings.
Chimpanzees are knuckle walkers, which means they walk on all fours, using their knuckles for support.
They communicate through sounds and calls, as well as through touch, facial expressions, and body language.
They have opposable thumbs and big toes, enabling them to have a precision grip on just about anything.
In captivity, they can be taught human sign language such as ASL (American Sign Language).
Chimpanzees are susceptible to a number of human diseases.
Chimpanzees are omnivores, which means they primarily eat fruits, nuts, seeds, blossoms, leaves, and insects, but they will also catch and eat small animals.
In 1900, chimpanzees numbered between one and two million. Now there are estimated to be fewer than 300,000 chimpanzees remaining in the wild.

Participants in the Student Viewing Room gave Mark Kelly and Gabby Giffords a standing ovation.
Colin Goddard, a survivor of the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre, moderated the audience Q&A.
Inspirational, amazing, and memorable. Captain Mark Kelly was so interesting. And Rep. Giffords is so courageous and optimistic. A Forum event that we will remember for a long time.
We hosted a Sunday brunch for friends, all of whom had attended the Forum the night before, and it was the topic of conversation. Talk of background checks and compromise was most productive.

A smile on the face is a sign that the heart is at home . Since 1984, we’ve been “a place to call home” for over 130,000 out of town patients and family members while they receive critical medical care at Richmond-area hospitals. As the premier area provider of lodging and non-medical services, our mission is to serve referred families in a home-like environment with dignity and integrity and without regard to financial resources.
