Robert A. Iger served as Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company for 15 years, from 2005 to 2020, ushering the beloved brand into a newly demanding world market. He then served as Executive Chairman and Chairman of the Board of Directors until his retirement at the end of 2021, directing the company’s creative endeavors, and leading the board while providing the full benefit of his experience, leadership, and guidance. While identified by its generations of iconic family films, The Walt Disney Company is a multinational business with an expansive fleet of divisions and brands in film production, streaming media, music, theme park resorts, television, theater, consumer products, and publishing; and is one of the 30 prominent and influential companies that comprise the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Tonight, in this exclusive Richmond Forum conversation, Iger will bring to life the principles that guided him to reinvent one of the world’s most well-known companies during an era of unprecedented change in culture, media, and technology. Widely recognized as one of the most successful chief executives in history, Iger began his career at ABC Television in 1974, rising to President in 1994. Following its acquisition of ABC, Iger was named Disney’s President/COO in 2000, moving to the position of CEO in 2005. During his tenure as CEO, Bob Iger built Disney into one of the world’s largest and most admired companies, all while focusing on the three fundamental pillars of his strategic vision: generating the best content possible, fostering innovation while utilizing technology, and expanding into new global markets. Disney’s rich legacy of unforgettable storytelling and movie franchises expanded with Iger’s acquisitions of Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and 21st Century Fox; as well as the landmark 2016 opening of Disney’s first theme park and resort in Mainland China.
Always one to embrace new technology, Iger made Disney an industry leader by expanding and coordinating its creative content offerings across media platforms, most recently leveraging cutting edge direct-to-consumer technology with the highly successful launch of the Disney+ streaming service in 2019 and ESPN+ in 2018. As of the fourth fiscal quarter of 2021, Disney+ had amassed 118.1 million subscribers worldwide and premiered exclusive titles in movies, television shows, and documentaries. Under Iger’s leadership, The Walt Disney Company has been named one of the world’s most reputable, respected, and admired companies by Forbes, Fortune, Barron’s, and other prestigious publications. Iger was named TIME’s 2019 Businessperson of the Year and one of the World’s Most Powerful People by Forbes in 2018. He was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 2020 and the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame in 2015. Iger is the author of the New York Times Best Seller “The Ride of a Lifetime: Lessons Learned from 15 Years as CEO of The Walt Disney Company.” This exclusive Forum conversation will illuminate how to lead a legacy brand authentically into a modern economy, society, and dynamic landscape.

Editor-At-Large of Recode, host of the Recode Decode, Sway, and Pivot podcasts, weekly contributing Opinion writer for the New York Times and executive producer of the Code conference—Kara Swisher is good at what she does and has the confidence to match. Considered the top reporter in the tech game, Swisher has been reporting on the industry since the early 1990s. She was there when Amazon was looking for its first headquarters in Seattle, when Google was in its garage and when Netflix was just a startup. Once called Silicon Valley’s most feared but revered journalist by New York Magazine, Swisher has established herself as the oracle of the tech world with unrivaled access to the industry’s most significant leaders. Swisher wanted to be a spy when she was younger. However, her ability to disarm the subject, dissect the truth, and deliver judgment was not wasted when she became a journalist. Swisher’s reporting style is both strategic and revealing. As the host of her award-winning podcast shows, Swisher interviews tech executives, politicians, and celebrities about their big ideas and how they’re changing our world. Through enlightening conversations with people like Tesla CEO Elon Musk, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and many more, she uncovers and explains how our digital world is changing and how it changes us.

Andrew McEvoy is pleased to feature arrangements of Disney music made by his colleague and friend Nathan Mills of “Beyond the Guitar.” They present this music to The Richmond Forum to honor the accomplishments of Bob Iger and his work in leading the Disney corporation. Andrew McEvoy is a classical guitarist and event professional living in Richmond, Virginia. Since his teenage debuts at the Smithsonian Institution (2002) and as soloist with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra (2004), he has remained a fixture in the Commonwealth’s musical tapestry, playing regular concerts and events for distinguished venues in nearly every corner of the region. BUILDING THRIVING COMMUNITIES, INSPIRED BY cap one boi OUR PARTNER IN IMPACT: THE RICHMOND FORUM See how we’re helping our communities thrive at capitalone.com/about
Welcome to The Big Return!
It is a great honor to have you with us this evening for my first Forum as your new Executive Director. This is our 36th season, and I’m stepping into a tremendous legacy of stewarding conversations that matter to our community, country, and world. The Richmond Forum is special, and being entrusted to lead it gives me great pride. The Board of Directors and staff that lead The Forum are exceptional. They are committed to excellence, deeply thoughtful, and imminently flexible. In the last year they developed a new mission statement: To present powerful speakers so Richmond can learn. To empower local voices so Richmond can lead. I find the dual nature of this mission inspiring and authentic to the history of The Forum. The mission embodies the importance of what we do at the theater as well as developing new leaders locally through our Speech & Debate Initative. The Board and staff also worked tirelessly to develop an online format during the pandemic to keep us all learning and connected. Because of this work The Forum was named “The Best Local Event Pivot to Virtual” in Style Weekly’s “Best of Richmond 2021.” I recognize that inheriting The Forum’s history of distinction comes with the very high expectations of our subscribers and sponsors that we realize the new mission fully. We expect The Forum to elevate public discourse through the region, making our community a better place for all our residents, and a model for the nation. Together we will continue to do this through civil discourse, inclusivity, courage, balance, and creativity. We’re also happy to have people across Central Virginia join us virtually this season. This is an innovation The Forum has wanted to embark on for years. Streaming our programming extends the reach of the conversations started at The Forum, and virtual subscriptions will be a permanent feature going forward. Seats that open up at the theater will first be made available to online subscribers, so be sure your friends and family know that their first step to joining us here in person is to join us from home. I’m so glad to be with you; have a wonderful evening. Heather Mullins Crislip Executive Director The Richmond Forum

2020–2021 Progress Report During the all-virtual school year, The Richmond Forum ensured that students did not miss out on opportunities to hone their speech and debate skills. By hosting and partnering with virtual tournaments and scrimmages, our Speech & Debate Initiative thrived during a difficult time that was also ripe for discussion, insight, and at-home learning. The 2020-2021 school year was incredibly hard for educators and students, and we all had to find new ways to connect and build our skills. The Richmond Forum is proud to report that, despite the adjustments and setbacks of the virtual environment, we are still progressing toward our goal of having high-performing speech and debate activities in every public middle and high school in the Richmond region by 2025, the 250th anniversary of Patrick Henry’s historic speech.
In 2020 & 2021... • • • • •
The Forum maintained 17 of our 21 teams during the all-virtual school year. Volunteer judges increased by 100%. The Forum ran 13 virtual tournaments for local students to compete. More than 30 students qualified for national level competitions—up from only 8 the previous year! In partnership with the Richmond Debate Institute, we sent a total of 60 students to virtual summer camps and offered a free Sunday virtual league.
Without the support of The Forum’s Initiative, speech and debate programs likely would have laid fallow last year. Instead, we crafted the groundwork to continue to build student success within local public middle and high schools and fostered a vibrant speech and debate circuit. Interested in Volunteering? Finding an adequate number of experienced judges available during tournaments and scrimmages can be a challenge for both speech and debate teams and tournament hosts. To support our local teams, we have built a volunteer Judges Bank by engaging Forum subscribers and interested community members. We provide online training to prepare each and every volunteer to help students get the best feedback possible so they can advance as a speaker, debater, and thinker—therefore bettering the young minds of our region. Every single day, no matter where he is in the world, Bob Iger wakes up at 4:15 AM. Starting before most, Iger honors the serenity of these morning hours and is vigilant about guarding this time for himself. In 2018, Iger told Vanity Fair, “I create a firewall with technology...I try to exercise and think before I read.” Many people tend to look at their phone first thing in the morning, but Iger does things differently.“If I read, it throws me off, it’s distracting. I’m immediately thinking about usually someone else’s thoughts instead of my own. I like being alone with my own thoughts, and it gives me an opportunity to not just replenish but to organize, and it’s important.” But how does a man like Iger get his brain going if he’s not diving into his inbox first thing? Exercise. Six days a week, two of which he focuses on strength, Iger is in the gym to start the day. He regards music as a type of meditation for this time, and as a known classic rock fan, we might imagine the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtracks playing through his headphones. After the warm up, Iger is ready to go. Coffee sipped, newspaper read, and mentally balanced, he usually makes it into the office before 7 AM. “I don’t like to walk into the office, get to work, and immediately be bombarded by external forces. I like easing into my day a little bit more. It’s just what has worked for me, whether it’s psychological or physiological. The saying, ‘The early bird catches the worm,’ is one of the oldest cliches in the books, but there happens to be a lot of truth to that.” Although this now former CEO doesn’t always have a typical day in the office, this routine helped him to find great clarity as he led one of the world’s largest companies into a new era—one that is always online—despite the intentional time he takes to reset, rest, and be offline. Iger is not alone in the leagues of leaders who rise before the crack of dawn. Tim Cook, Apple CEO and friend of Iger’s, reportedly has his alarm go off at 3:45 AM, starting his day with e-mails. Upcoming Forum special speaker former First Lady Michelle Obama once told Oprah she is up by 4:30 AM and begins her day with fitness. It’s no wonder those who are charged with making important, focused decisions attempt to make the most of their mornings. Balance and intention are key for leaders starting the day right. After the release of his bestselling book, Iger told The Brunswick Group about why it’s so important for him to strive for balance. Iger noted that there needs to be “balance between operational excellence and long-term strategy. You have to have a foot planted firmly in the present that’s operating your business for today, and you have to have a foot in the future trying to figure out, Where might the business go?” Starting his day in a peaceful place where he can concentrate creates an internal optimization of thought, and by the time he gets moving and gets into his work day, the strategic vision is ready to roll.

Classics, Rem astered There’s something decidedly magical about the legacy of Disney, and it’s not just the pixie dust. It’s more than the beloved characters and singular stories that make us smile or even shed a tear. The way that characters, stories, and entire universes are managed and brought to life over many iterations throughout a seemingly never ending canon of media is the formula to how Disney has remained an extraordinary brand for nearly a century. During Iger’s tenure, this legacy was deepened and built upon by developing stories that resonated with modern audiences while also emphasizing and renewing the classic characters that we have grown to love throughout lifetimes. The Force of Creativity: Star Wars When Bob Iger originally contemplated making a deal with Lucasfilm, it was at the suggestion of his friend Steve Jobs. Exploring an acquisition for a universe as vast as the one of Star Wars was no small feat, and Iger heavily relied on his respect for creativity and long running relationship with the creator himself to persuade George Lucas to come to the table. When Disney began working with the Star Wars Star Wars-themed land Disney Parks Concept Art, © Disney/LucasFilm title, there hadn’t been a release from the franchise since 2005’s Revenge of the Sith. Disney’s first venture into a galaxy “far, far away” without major involvement from Lucas and 20th Century Fox paid off with their release of 2015’s The Force Awakens. This release alone generated over $2 billion in box office revenue, earning the title of 4th highest grossing movie of all time. Marvel As Iger became CEO, he made it his highest priority to revive Disney Animation and reclaim their legacy of being the best in animated media. After some internal movement and the Pixar deal, Iger felt relief in that area of the business and readied to make a leap into a new universe—one full of risks and complex characters—the Marvel Cinematic Universe, affectionately known to fans as the MCU. Black Panther movie poster, courtesy Disney+ When Iger was initially presenting the idea of acquiring Marvel to former Apple CEO and Disney board member Steve Jobs, he brought along an encyclopedia of Marvel characters—there were so many that they filled an entire hardback book. Since the purchase in 2009, Disney has released four phases of MCU movies, exposing the world to well known comic icons like Captain America and historically less emphasized characters like Black Widow, Captain Marvel, and Black Panther. These characters and others add to the full value of the MCU, capturing audiences from sold out theaters on opening weekends to their own homes, where Disney+ streams original, award-winning Marvel content.
Both with star-studded casts, The Lion
King was originally released in 1994, and a heavily animated live-action version was released in 2019. Beauty and The Beast and The Lion King movie posters, courtesy Disney+
Animated to Live Action The legacy of Disney stands on a foundation of animation, including films as early as Snow White and the Seven Dwarves (1937) which references a classic Grimms’ Fairy Tale, adapting it into a then more modern version. Disney Renaissance era blockbusters like The Lion King (1994) and Beauty and the Beast (1991) solidified their mastery of animation, but The Walt Disney Company did not stop there. Recent live-action adaptations bring these titles and more to life in new ways, replacing the pencils of the animation room with cutting-edge photorealistic computer generated imagery (CGI). Even with the technology advancements and updated stories being told through the eyes of classic characters, the magical roots of the Disney brand shine through these movies, which play on viewers’ nostalgic expectations and raise them thanks to film production advancements.
