Since 1775, Richmonders have understood the power of speech and debate.

The Richmond Forum is proud to announce the creation of a regional initiative to bring speech and debate programs to all of our public schools. From Patrick Henry’s historic and game-changing speech to America’s largest and most respected non-profit public forum, Richmonders have long understood that the ability to civilly articulate and debate ideas and points of view is critical to a functioning democracy. In that local tradition, we believe our region’s students should have access to strong speech and debate programs in our public schools. These programs teach research, critical thinking, construction of logical arguments, assessment of audience, self esteem, and engagement in world events—skills which build better students, better college candidates, better employees, and better citizens. Thanks to our subscribers’ generous support of the Ralph Krueger Memorial Fund, The Richmond Forum has provided a grant to Chesterfield County Public Schools to enable all eleven high schools to be able to offer speech and debate programs this school year. The grant will fund training for coaches, and entry fees and travel costs for tournaments. And this is just the beginning. This grant represents the first step of a longterm initiative to help grow and strengthen these programs in the public high schools and middle

schools where they already exist, as well as to launch and support them where they do not. In the coming months, we will be working with local businesses, individuals, community partners, and the National Speech & Debate Association—and in partnership with the region’s school systems—to build the Richmond Region Speech & Debate Initiative and to foster powerful, empowered, and informed student voices. To show your support for this initiative and our other Richmond Forum student programs, please consider making a Giving Tuesday (November 27th) or year-end gift to the Ralph Krueger Memorial Fund at the address below. Captain Scott Kelly captivated the world during his record-breaking year aboard the International Space Station (ISS). A former military fighter pilot, test pilot, engineer, and a retired U.S. Navy captain, Kelly completed four consecutive expeditions aboard the station during NASA’s “One-Year Mission,” helping to lay the groundwork for the future of space travel and exploration. Kelly was a flight engineer for expeditions 43 and 44 of the mission, and commander of the ISS for expeditions 45 and 46. His flight included 5,440 orbits around Earth and three spacewalks before returning home after 340 continuous days in space. Captain Kelly also broke the record for most cumulative days living and working in space by a NASA astronaut: 520 days. (The record is now held by Peggy Whitson, who has spent 665 days in space.) A major scientific goal of the mission was to better understand how the human body reacts and adapts to the harsh environment of space. During the flight, over 400 experiments were conducted on the station. Data from the expedition will be used to reduce risks to the health of future crew members as NASA prepares to advance space travel beyond low Earth orbit, ultimately to Mars. In space and since his return, Kelly and his identical twin brother, Captain Mark Kelly (The Richmond Forum, 2013), have been the subjects of NASA’s Twins Study, which is designed to provide broader insight into the subtle effects and changes that may occur in spaceflight by studying two individuals who have the same genes, but have lived in different environments for one year. NASA published preliminary findings in early 2018, saying that

the Twins Study will “continue to inform NASA’s Human Research Program studies for years to come.” Captain Kelly retired from NASA in 2016. In November 2016, Kelly was appointed to a two-year term as United Nations “Champion for Space” by the U.N. Office for Outer Space Affairs to promote space as a tool for reaching sustainable development goals. He gave the keynote address at the organization’s UNISPACE+50 symposium in June 2018. Kelly is the New York Times bestselling author of Endurance: My Year in Space, a Lifetime of Discovery, a memoir of his life, career, and time aboard the ISS. Sony Pictures has optioned the rights to the book and is developing a film adaptation with Scott and Mark Kelly on board as co-executive producers. Kelly holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the State University of New York Maritime College and a Master’s in Aviation Systems from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Today, Kelly is “location independent,” traveling the world with his wife, Amiko.

2015–2016: A Year in Space From March 2015 to March 2016, Captain Kelly spent 340 days aboard the International Space Station (ISS), breaking the U.S. record for the most consecutive days in space.

1996–2012 Kelly began his career with NASA in 1996, flying four flights aboard the space shuttles Discovery and Endeavour, and on Russian Soyuz rockets. He retired from the Navy with the rank of captain in 2012, and was selected for the year-long mission to the ISS that November. 1993–1996 After completing U.S. Naval Test Pilot School, just like the Right Stuff pilots, Kelly tested F-14, F/A-18, and KC130F aircraft for the Navy.

1989–1993 Kelly served aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Dwight D. Eisenhower on deployments to the North Atlantic, the Mediterranean and Red Seas, and the Persian Gulf. 1982–1989 Moved into action by the words of Tom Wolfe, Kelly worked hard through college at SUNY Maritime and through Naval flight training, earning his aviator wings in 1989.

[The Right Stuff] wasn’t just an exciting adventure story. This was something more like a life plan...It was the idea of doing something immensely difficult, risking your life for it, and surviving. –Scott Kelly

1963–1982 Growing up in New Jersey, Scott Kelly had trouble focusing in school; today, he says that it was likely undiagnosed ADHD. His high school job as an EMT was the first interest to engage him for any length of time, until he read The Right Stuff by Richmond native and Forum alum Tom Wolfe and was inspired to become a pilot.

Though there are many reasons for NASA to undertake the massive effort to launch spacecraft and astronauts into orbit, a primary motivation is the opportunity to conduct scientific experiments in microgravity to better understand the environment of space and to improve understanding of the same processes here on Earth. A lot of people assumed I During the time that Scott Kelly was was chosen because I have preparing for his year-long expedition to the ISS, an identical twin, but that it occurred to him that the mission presented a was just serendipitous. unique opportunity for scientific research since –Scott Kelly he had an identical twin brother, Mark. He shared his idea with his superiors at NASA, and with his brother, and everyone agreed. As their employer, it would have been illegal for NASA to ask, but luckily Scott brought it up on his own accord and the Twins Study was born. The study comprises ten areas of investigation (see below) and was designed to compare the genetic and biological changes that occur during spaceflight by observing and comparing Scott and Mark Kelly before, during, and after Scott’s year in space. NASA released its preliminary findings from these investigations in March 2018, with an integrated paper to come.

Highlights of the NASA Twins Study Preliminary Findings Telomeres: Significantly increased in average length for Scott Biochemical profile: Scott’s body mass dropped during flight and levels of folic acid increased. Cognition: No significant changes Immunological responses: Immune responses to a flu vaccine were similar. Multi-omics: Higher levels of inflammation in Scott indicated by lipid and cytokine levels that remained elevated post-return

Mark and Scott Kelly before the year-long mission to the ISS. January 19, 2015. Photo: NASA.

Microbiome: Differences in the gastrointestinal microbiome were “pronounced at all timepoints,” but “were not greater than what might occur in one […] who makes changes to their diet or is exposed to illness.” Gene expression: Changes in the activation of “space genes” due to the stresses of space travel. 93% returned to normal post-return, but a subset remained “disrupted” in Scott. Epigenomics: Chemical modifications in Scott’s white blood cell populations during flight that returned to baseline back on Earth Cardiovascular system: Thickening of carotid artery wall in Scott during and post-flight

Urine proteomics: Observed changes in protein pathways and absorption in Scott during flight

The Anatomy of a Year in Space

“Space Brain” The fluid in the body shifts to the head and can cause confusion and difficulty focusing on tasks. It takes a while to adjust to functioning clearly in space. There’s also a learning curve for new arrivals to the station who are trying to navigate in microgravity through the ISS modules. Daily Life The Onboard Short Term Plan Viewer (OSTPV) is NASA’s scheduling system that rules astronaut’s lives during their time aboard the station. They are responsible for the operations and maintenance of the station, which takes up a majority of their time. On top of that, the sun rises and sets every 90 minutes, so astronauts rely on watches in order to have any sense of how much time has elapsed. The whole day could be affected by a task that runs too long or a public affairs event scheduled last minute, and usually that means losing personal time or critical time for sleep.

Atmospheric Systems Being in the vacuum of space requires creating a pressurized, breathable atmosphere aboard the ISS. One aspect of the system that caused Scott Kelly headaches in space was the pair of Carbon Dioxide Removal Assemblies (CDRA), the station’s air regulation units. When those malfunctioned, which happened frequently, the crew had to work quickly to repair them or risk feeling the dizzying and sometimes painful effects of too much carbon dioxide. Always Being “On” Crew members on the ISS need to be ready at a moment’s notice to address a problem indicated by an alarm or emergency message from Earth. They are also often being streamed on NASA TV, so they need to be aware of what they’re saying and doing at all times—the whole world could be watching. Kelly also noted that living aboard the station attuned his senses to every hum, beep, and vibration, even down to identifying subtle shifts in CO2 levels.

239.4 ft 357.5 ft

Science Experiments The other major piece of their responsibilities in space besides operations and maintenance is to conduct experiments, including on live animals and plants, in collaboration with scientists on Earth via video conference. For Scott Kelly, he also needed to take regular blood, urine, and fecal samples for use in the Twins Study. Cooperation Being in such close quarters (about the total volume of space occupied by our guest on stage), interpersonal relationships can make or break the mission. Connecting with Home Astronauts have to watch their loved ones and news from home from a distance. They are able to make phone calls and have video chats via communications satellite, as long as the satellite properly aligns with the station. Kelly watched his daughters grow up a lot while he was in space, and watched his partner,

Amiko, functioning as a single parent. He was also in space on a previous mission when his sister-in-law Gabby Giffords (The Richmond Forum, 2013) was shot in 2011. The Risks On top of everything else an astronaut has to do, events like a PDAM (predetermined debris avoidance maneuver) are a regular occurrence in space. The smallest piece of debris or space rock has the potential to tear a hole in the station and kill everyone inside instantly from depressurization. Because of that, jobs like spacewalks take hours of intense preparation for crew to properly suit up, check for leaks, and move through the station’s airlocks. A New Perspective During his year in space, Scott Kelly spent hours in the station’s domed Cupola observation module watching the Earth. He took many photographs and gained new perspective on the world and his role in it.

For the past 60 years, NASA and its international equivalents have been the primary drivers of space travel and exploration. In the U.S., NASA remains the leading force but the private sector is quickly catching up. In 2012, Elon Musk’s SpaceX became the first private company to send a spacecraft to the International Space Station when its Dragon cargo capsule resupplied the station. Other companies like Sierra Nevada Corporation, Boeing, and Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin are following suit with cargo and crew transport vehicles being tested, operated, or developed to further exploration into space. Visionaries like Peter Diamandis (The Richmond Forum, 2018) and his XPRIZE Foundation look to space travel as the next area of opportunity for innovation and technical achievement in the private sector. Intergovernmental agencies like the U.N. What’s Next? Office for Outer Space Affairs see possibilities for A sample of planned space using space technologies to reach its sustainable exploration & discovery development goals, like ending hunger and NASA improving communications. Joe Scarborough & Newt Gingrich Perspectives on the Party in Power

In April, two bastions of American conservative politics—former Representative Joe Scarborough and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich—reflected on the Grand Old Party with political analyst Mara Liasson.

Jim Dillard welcomed guests to Altria Theater on behalf of Altria Group, the Lead Patron for the evening.

Mark Hourigan (center), CEO of Hourigan, the Host Patron for the evening, and guest Tommy Pruitt shared a moment with Mr. Gingrich at dinner before the program.

The Bob Blagg Trio entertained with selections from the Great American Songbook as the theater filled.

“With all the back and forth between Joe and Newt in recent weeks, I wasn’t sure how this event would compare to when Tim Russert moderated Newt and James Carville. It was nice to again see a very reasoned discussion, which is one of the reasons I enjoy The Forum so much. As has been the case before, seeing and hearing high-profile individuals in this setting provides a lot of perspective and a fuller understanding of the person, whether you agree with their opinions or not.” Subscriber comment

Moderator Mara Liasson, Forum director Bill Chapman, and volunteers sorted audience questions backstage during intermission.

The pair shared their perspectives with Richmond area students in our student room.

“I appreciated the respectful nature of the discussions in spite of philosophical differences. I was surprised, in a good way, at the values-based discussion that showed more general alignment than vast differences. I really appreciated the insight into the challenges facing the GOP as an institution and those who hold a conservative worldview. Subscriber comment

Mr. Scarborough and Mr. Gingrich have differing opinions of and visions for the party they have each called their own, but they have the same hope for success for the country.

Moments of contention on the issues were balanced with sharp wit and humor throughout the evening.

Tina Fey

Funny You Should Ask: A Conversation with Tina Fey Tina Fey rarely stands still, much less sits down. But in January, the acclaimed actress, comedian, screenwriter, playwright, producer, author, and mom will sit down at The Richmond Forum for a rare live conversation about her life, career, and funny way of seeing the world. From UVA dramas to Second City to Saturday Night Live to 30 Rock to the 2018 premiere of Mean Girls on Broadway, Fey is one of America’s most accomplished and beloved entertainers. The youngest-ever recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, Fey is also the author of a bestselling memoir, Bossypants.

Medical mission

I’m going to change a world — whether it’s Earth or Mars is just a matter of time. VCU was a great place to combine my childhood loves of space and medicine. A clerkship at NASA helped me find a way to fuse the two, and now I hope to specialize in fertility medicine as it relates to astronauts. My name is Brent Monseur, and thinking beyond the stratosphere is how I challenge the norm. VCU is where I make it real. an equal opportunity/affirmative action university
