For neuroscientist and best-selling author Dr. Daniel J. Levitin, an interest in music began at age four when he was given a reelto-reel tape machine, which he used to make clandestine recordings of his parent’s conversations and to experiment with musical recordings. The machine only lasted one year before breaking, but Levitin’s interest in music has lasted a lifetime. Levitin’s career began with ten years as a session musician, commercial recording engineer, live sound engineer, and record producer, including serving as Director of A&R for 415/Columbia Records. As a producer and consultant, he worked on records by Blue Öyster Cult, Santana, and Steely Dan. For his work in the music industry, Levitin has been awarded 17 gold and platinum records. Since that time, he has played saxophone or guitar with David Byrne, Sting, Bobby McFerrin, and tonight’s co-presenter, Rosanne Cash. Levitin returned to college in 1990 to earn his B.A. in Cognitive Psychology and Cognitive Science at Stanford University, then his Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of

Oregon, where he researched absolute pitch in expert and non-expert populations. In 2000, Dr. Levitin joined McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and is now the Director of the University’s Laboratory for Music Cognition, Perception, and Expertise. He also serves as the Dean of Arts and Humanities at the Minerva Schools at the Keck Graduate Institute. In 2006, he received the Principal’s Teaching Prize at McGill, the University’s highest teaching honor. Dr. Levitin has written over 400 scientific and popular articles on music and neuroscience, appearing in The New York Times, The Atlantic, and Rolling Stone, and interviewed numerous artists, including Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell, and Paul Simon. He has also published more than 100 articles in leading scientific journals and is credited with fundamental discoveries about the nature of musical memory and absolute pitch, the neural correlates of musical structure, and the role of the cerebellum in mediating musical emotion. His 1994 article on memory for music, published in Perception & Psychophysics, was listed by the Millenium Project as one of the top 100 cognitive science papers of all time. Dr. Levitin is one of the best-selling scientist-writers of the last ten years. His 2006 book, This Is Your Brain on Music: The Science of a Human Obsession, spent more than one year on The New York Times best seller list and is the basis for two award-winning documentaries: The Music Instinct, co-starring Levitin and Bobby McFerrin; and The Musical Brain, co-starring Levitin and Sting. In his latest best seller, The Organized Mind, Dr. Levitin discusses how cognitive neuroscience of attention and memory help us to navigate the flood of information in the twenty-first century.

In 2007, Rosanne Cash, one of America’s leading singer/songwriters, was diagnosed with a rare brain disorder known as Chiari Malformation Type 1, a congenital malformation of the skull that affects the brain and spinal cord. She underwent brain surgery as treatment, and many people, including Cash, wondered if her musical career might be over. Her road to recovery was difficult but successful, and today Cash’s career continues, spanning 40 years, 15 albums, four Grammy Awards, 21 Top 40 hits, and 11 #1 singles. When Cash received her fourth Grammy in February, she quoted Ray Charles saying, “You’re a better singer at 50 than you are at 30, because your whole life shows up in your voice.” Born in 1955 in Memphis, Tennessee, Cash was raised in southern California. This long distance from Nashville allowed Cash to absorb the influence of West Coast artists like Buffalo Springfield; Crosby, Stills and Nash; and Joni Mitchell. She began her career by writing poetry, some of which found its way into hit songs for other artists. In 1978, she cut her debut self-titled album in Munich, Germany, before moving to Nashville and landing a recording contract with Columbia records. In the 1980s, Cash released several albums and earned 11 #1 hits on the Billboard country charts. Her 1985 album, Rhythm and Romance, included the hit song I Don’t Know Why You Don’t Want Me, which earned Cash her first Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. In the early 1990s, Cash moved to New York City and continued to release albums that focused on her personal experiences, including Interiors, an album largely based on the breakup of her first marriage.

A prolific writer, Cash has written essays about her life, health, and other topics; her essays have appeared in The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Oxford American, The Nation, and many other publications. Her best-selling memoir, Composed (2010), was described by Chicago Tribune as “one of the best accounts of an American life you will likely ever read.” Cash headlined the Richmond Folk Festival in 2012, completed a three-day residency at the Library of Congress in December 2013, and was selected by Carnegie Hall for its 2015-2016 Perspectives series. Her latest album, The River & the Thread, is a stunning exploration of the American South. Earlier this year, the album earned three Grammy Awards: Best Americana Album, Best American Roots Performance, and Best American Roots Song, for A Feather’s Not a Bird. The triple win puts her in an elite class of artists who have taken home so many honors in a single night. Cash currently lives in New York City with her husband, record producer John Leventhal, and has five children.

BY SAVING THE PERFORMING ARTIST. When Ellie Whelan stood up to perform in front of her school, she collapsed – but it wasn’t part of the act. Ellie had just suffered massive cardiac arrest. After being airlifted to the VCU Pauley Heart Center, Ellie underwent ARCTIC therapy, a process that lowers body temperature to induce hypothermia and help minimize brain damage. It saved her life. And now, Ellie’s back on stage performing. How’s that for an encore? For more success stories, go to vcuhealth.org

From Dr. Daniel J. Levitin

From Rosanne Cash

Musical novelty attracts attention and overcomes boredom, increasing memorability.

We all need art and music like we need blood and oxygen.

As a tool for the activation of specific thoughts, music is as good as language. The combination of the two—as best exemplified in the love song—is the best courtship of all.

Even though I was young and inexperienced, I had intuitive but very definite ideas about how I wanted to sound and what songs were right for me.

It is only in the last five hundred years that music has become a spectator activity.... And it has only been in the last hundred years or so that the ties between musical sound and human movement have been minimized. – This Is Your Brain on Music

I listened to classical music in those first few months [after brain surgery], and nothing else. Mostly I wanted silence.

We may have had music before we had a word for it. Both poetry and lyrics and all visual arts draw their power from their ability to express abstractions of reality. ...that is a feature of the musical brain. – The World in Six Songs

Musicality presents as both productive and receptive ability, and skill can manifest itself as primarily technical, cognitive, intuitive, or emotional, or in various combinations. – What Does It Mean to Be Musical?

These four records [Bob Dylan’s Desire, Tammy Wynette and David Houston’s album of duets, James Taylor’s Gorilla, and Janis Ian’s Society’s Child] wore grooves in my personality, I listened to them so much. – Composed: A Memoir

...the lyrical content of songs is, by definition, wholly entwined with melody, rhythm, tone and possibly a backbeat, and these carry their own authority. – The Ear of the Beholder

Since I was a kid, I’ve loved story songs, history ballads, and concept albums. Songs with welldrawn characters, a strong sense of time and place, a narrative arc and cinematic quality are endlessly fascinating. – Time Travel and the Ballad Tradition

A Student Essay by Michelle Marquez I remember the sound of the crickets chirping, the birds singing, and the crunch of the dry leaves under my feet as I leapt from one pile to another in my favorite pink boots. This was a lucky outing, because the entire family had come along: My mom, my older sister Samantha, my dad by her side, hand in hand, and me. To me, this park was filled with questions, mystery, and beauty—specifically an endless string of what-how-why questions. “Why is the sky blue?” I asked. My father looked at me and, with a laugh, answered: “Light scattering,” before lecturing to me as if I were a college student. Of course, I never understood a word he said, but I led the way to the park’s pond, looking at that deep blue sky, mesmerized by its beauty. Nature provided the quarters, nickels, and dimes to my question machine, with each answer replenishing my endless curiosity. Ten years later, I find it fascinating that we know more about the origin of the universe than the organ that is responsible for understanding such complex concepts, the brain. We still do not understand how dreams, emotions, and memories play essential roles in the process of creativity in science and art. Neuroscience is opening the doors to better comprehend both our perceptions and our sense of humanity. I have been inspired by pioneers such as tonight’s speaker, Dr. Daniel J. Levitin, to be a part of this journey of exploration. Over the last four years, I have developed a passion for understanding human perceptions of art using scientific correlations. I have explored the deeply rooted biological connection that the human brain forms with complex images, sounds, and music, using a mathematical parameter called fractal

dimension. This research provides a new foundation for how music therapy can work in treating symptoms of mood, neurological, and anxiety disorders. In my journey to break down the barrier between science and art, I have been honored to win First Place and Best of Category in Behavioral Science at the International Science and Engineering Fair in 2014. I was also interviewed by Dr. Sanjay Gupta on CNN’s Vital Signs, and MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory recently named a newly discovered asteroid after me. My experience has led me to consider the powerful role that science and art can play in enhancing people’s lives. Science provides one piece of the puzzle; science’s integration with the arts has the power to go further and create social innovation. It is my dream to explore and promote a multi-disciplinary blend of arts and STEM fields, finding a place where science meets art. We are pleased to have Michelle Marquez with us as our guest this evening. Michelle is a sophomore at the Math & Science High School at Clover Hill.

We’re pairing students from graphic design and environmental studies in a new info graphics course. Knowing how to make data talk to people, figuring out how to tell one message and tell it well — that’s what we’re after.” – Daniel McGarvey, Ph.D. VCU Life Sciences
