JOHN LITHGOW
ABOUT TONIGHT’S SPEAKER
JOHN LITHGOW IS A RACONTEUR with a wide-ranging and towering talent. Lithgow has made an indelible impression on audiences through his work in film, television, and theater, and has advocated tirelessly for the creative arts. He is the winner of two Tony Awards, six Emmys, and three SAG Awards, and has twice been nominated for an Oscar.
Audiences from Richmond and beyond know Lithgow from his delightful performances across stage and screen. He has appeared in countless critically acclaimed films, such as “All That Jazz,” “The World According to Garp,” “Terms of Endearment,” and “Bombshell.” This past February, he co-starred with Julianne Moore in the AppleTV+ psychological thriller, “Sharper.” Lithgow is also among the star-studded cast of Martin Scorsese’s upcoming “Killers of the Flower Moon,” set for release later this year.
Lithgow has starred in the hit television shows “3rd Rock from the Sun,” “Dexter,” “The Crown,” and “Perry Mason.” He currently stars alongside Jeff Bridges in “The Old Man” on FX and Hulu. He has appeared on Broadway 25 times, including “The Changing Room,” “M. Butterfly,” “Requiem for a Heavyweight,” “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” and “The Sweet Smell of Success.”
Lithgow’s creative work extends beyond his acting chops. He has written several best-selling children’s picture books, as well as a 2011 memoir “Drama: An Actor’s Education.” Since 2019, he has written and illustrated the political satire “Dumpty Trilogy,” which landed Lithgow on The New York Times Nonfiction Best Seller list for three consecutive years.
Having recently completed his term as co-chair of the Commission on the Arts of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Lithgow continues to advocate on behalf of arts in education and the livelihood of America’s creative workforce.
Tonight, Lithgow will reflect on the iconic roles that comprise his decades-long career, and will undoubtedly treat us to an original limerick or two.
“PEOPLE HAVE EXPECTATIONS FROM YOU—AND THE WHOLE FUN OF ACTING IS TAKING EXPECTATIONS AND COMPLETELY UPENDING THEM.”
This isn’t business as usual. It’s creativity at work. Our unique mix of strong business foundations and creative problem solving prepares our students to lead industries. Or disrupt them. And that’s what makes us unlike any business school you’ve ever seen.
Welcome to VCU. A world UNLIKE any other.

BEYOND THE STAGE & SCREEN
ALTHOUGH HE IS BEST KNOWN for his prolific acting career, John Lithgow is also a marked wordsmith and illustrator. His poetry and drawings reflect his broad creative range and imagination.
Author of 11 children’s books and three installments of a political humor series, Lithgow has brought to life countless whimsical characters—both real and make-believe—who brim with personality and charm. His illustrations have been praised for their warmth, humor, and attention to detail. Lithgow’s artistic talents have been exhibited in galleries around the world and featured in various publications, including The New Yorker. He has also been known to commemorate the conclusion of an acting project by sketching an illustration of the project’s cast.
To commemorate his time with us this evening, Lithgow produced this original work, which will be auctioned at a later time to support the Richmond Forum Speech & Debate Initiative.
SPEECH & DEBATE STUDENTS
MORE THAN 600 RICHMOND-AREA STUDENTS have participated so far in the 2022 - 2023 competitive speech & debate season. Because of their involvement in these programs, they have gained self-confidence, built meaningful relationships, and developed critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity skills.
Below, meet two local high school competitors, and a notable forensics alumnus who have seen the impact that speech & debate can make in their lives.
Miangel Brown Petersburg High School
Miangel Brown is a sophomore at Petersburg High School, where she is a member of the Crimson Wave Forensics team. She says she joined the team because she likes to talk and can be very opinionated and outspoken. In her experience, forensics goes hand-in-hand with becoming a better speaker.
“I really enjoy the competition. I like that I have the one chance to get it right. The fear and excitement move me … I also love to act, so dramatic interpretation seemed right for me and lets me explore different characters. I hope to keep improving. I want my voice to be known and to win awards for Petersburg High School.”
Elise Massey Manchester High School
Elise Massey is a senior at Manchester High School and the captain of the debate team. Elise, who plans to go into business, says that she knew she needed to be a confident and persuasive speaker in order to do so. She joined the debate team as a sophomore.
“I have personally benefited from debate by gaining the skills of public speaking and critical thinking. It has also leveraged professional connections and good friendships. Academically, I’m able to process information and concepts more quickly with a wider perspective than before debate.”
For Elise, debate is an outlet where she gets to find her voice, share her voice, and become more confident as a whole.
John Lithgow Buchtel High School
From John Lithgow’s 2011 memoir “Drama: An Actor’s Education”:
“In tenth grade, the following year, I dusted off Twelfth Night once again. I reprised the entire gulling scene, this time playing all five parts. I performed it as a monologue in the category of ‘Humorous Declamation,’ for Buchtel High’s National Forensic League team. On Saturdays, I would travel with a bus-load of brainy debaters to tournaments held in empty high schools all over north-central Ohio. The others would debate and I would perform, competing with teams from all over the region.”

ELLA AL-SHAMAHI
AT THE RICHMOND FORUM
ELLA AL-SHAMAHI HAS A PROPENSITY FOR COMPELLING JOURNEYS. The paleoanthropologist and stand-up comedian’s arrival at The Richmond Forum for “An Evening With Neanderthals” came mere days after having completed a bucket-list scouting expedition in the Republic of Somaliland. But, perhaps an even more compelling journey was the one which led to her accomplished career in the first place. “I went to university to study evolution as a creationist because I thought I could destroy it,” Al-Shamahi shared. “And it should come as some sort of hope that I stand in front of you today an evolutionary biologist.”
According to Al-Shamahi, there is a lot we get wrong about scientific exploration. For example, archeologists in the 21st century aren’t sporting hats and whips like Indiana Jones, but are donning hazmat suits instead. The key to unlocking new discoveries about who our Neanderthal ancestors were, and how they lived, is DNA. Today, scientists take precautionary measures—like wearing protective clothing—so that they can carefully test soil, bones, stone tools, and cave art for traces of genetic material.
“I describe caves as the original prime real estate,” said Al-Shamahi. Advantageous positioning, cool climates, and stable living conditions made caves optimal dwellings for Neanderthals, and, therefore, the perfect archaeological sites for scientists to survey.
Al-Shamahi stated that there is plenty of evidence to indicate that Neanderthals may have been far more “human” than we once imagined. In fact, the first skeleton discovered in Iraq’s Shanidar Cave was that of an elderly male with numerous physical disabilities. “He probably didn’t have sight in one eye, he had hearing issues, he had a little bit of a limp, [and] he had a withered right arm,” Al-Shamahi explained. “If Neanderthals were knuckle-dragging ape-men, then how was this guy able to survive? This tells us that for at least this population of Neanderthals, in this time, they [had] care in the community.”
So, what exactly happened to the Neanderthal species? That is the mystery that Al-Shamahi and her colleagues are trying to solve. Even though the average modern human shares two percent of their DNA with these early ancestors, there is still so much we do not know about them.
Al-Shamahi advised that the biggest modern challenge to the field of science is that it has a geography problem. “Scientists don’t typically work in politically hostile, unstable, or disputed territories, not necessarily because they don’t want to … but because it is very difficult to get your university or your funding body to approve any work in politically unstable places.”
The map of the human journey from Africa, through the Middle East and into Western and South Asia, largely overlaps with the map of places which the British Foreign Office has declared to contain “red” or “orange” zones. “It is a tragedy for science that we are not doing work in these places, because we are essentially biasing our data.”
-ForumSubscriberIn a tale that was both humorous and harrowing, AlShamahi described her journey to Socotra, a densely biodiverse archipelago off the coast of Yemen. With only limited and potentially hazardous options of getting to Socotra, Al-Shamahi and her team boarded a cement cargo ship and sailed through pirate waters. Despite a treacherous voyage involving cockroaches and poorly welded toilets, “it was so worth it.” She stunned the audience with video footage from the expedition, showcasing other-worldly dragon’s blood trees and island inhabitants who continue to live in cave dwellings, much like the early human ancestors who came before them.
“We cannot predict where the next big scientific discovery will come from,” said Al-Shamahi, but she believes that by bringing all parts of the world into the fold and by collaborating across community divides, we can fuel ground-breaking exploration. She left the Forum with one final thought: “Science belongs to every single one of us. Everybody has to be at the table. It’s not going to work if we’re not all there.”

DR. CORNEL WEST & THOMAS CHATTERTON WILLIAMS
THE ABSOLUTE CONDEMNATION OF NO ONE
Two of the most original and important American philosophical minds of our time, Dr. Cornel West and Thomas Chatterton Williams do not agree on everything, but are committed to the absolute condemnation of no one. Together, they will explore whether we can cultivate a redemptive culture that transcends polarization, how institutions can be tolerant and open cultural spaces while being less captive to fleeting outbursts on transgressions, and how we can outgrow the reflexive reactions of people believing they know the “correct” political opinions. Issues of race, cancel culture, philosophy, and art are sure to be woven together in a wide-ranging intellectual reflection on this cultural moment. (Conversation with Q&A)
