WELCOME BACK TO THE THEATER!
We are very excited to be hosting five renowned, eclectic, and distinct programs for you in 20222023. A new season is an opportunity to open our minds and add dimension to what we think we know. At The Richmond Forum, we are united in the belief that by speaking, listening, learning, and honestly engaging, we can make our community and the world a better place.
We value and explore viewpoint diversity. The simple insight behind our conviction is our belief that civil conversations about the significant issues facing our world can lead to change. Or, as James Baldwin put it: “The world changes according to the way people see it, and if you alter, even by a millimeter, the way a person looks at reality, then you can change it.”
I hope each program invites you to think differently, even if it is just by a millimeter. This season, we have a fresh look and a new introductory video. We’re also experimenting with stage design and other elements to make our time together at the theater memorable and exciting. There are more surprises ahead!
We are really glad that you are here with us.

Davenport & Company is an independent, employee-owned firm, founded in Richmond, Virginia in 1863. We know there is more to our business than delivering high-quality financial services; it is about building meaningful relationships.
LT. GEN. H.R. McMASTER
RENOWNED AS A “WARRIOR-INTELLECTUAL,” Lieutenant General H.R. McMaster is a preeminent voice on leadership, global security, and international affairs. McMaster served as the assistant to the president for national security affairs from 2017 to 2018 and is recognized for his leadership in the Gulf War, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
McMaster is the author of two New York Times bestselling books on national security: “Battlegrounds: The Fight to Defend the Free World” (2020) and “Dereliction of Duty” (1998). He has been named one of TIME’s “100 Most Influential People in the World” and Fortune’s “World’s 50 Greatest Leaders.”
Upon graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1984, McMaster was commissioned in the United States Army. He has served numerous commands over the course of his 34-year military career, earning him the nickname of “The Iconoclast General.” Throughout his career, he has grounded his perspectives in research, having served as an assistant professor of history at West Point and a senior consulting fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies. He received his Ph.D. in American history from UNC Chapel Hill and currently operates out of The Hoover Institution on War, Revolution, and Peace at Stanford University.
McMaster has published scores of essays, articles, and book reviews on leadership, history, and the future of warfare in many publications including Foreign Affairs, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times. He serves on the advisory boards of Spirit of America, Edgybees, C3 AI, and Strider Technologies; and, is a board member of Zoom Video Communications and the Atlantic Council.
Tonight, McMaster will impart his views on the state of the world today and what we can expect from the future. We are ensured a refreshingly candid analysis of the key issues and players shaping the geopolitical landscape.
EXEMPLARY LEADERSHIP IN ACTION

Celebrating the spirit of inspiration
Inspiration allows us to dream bigger and view challenges from a new perspective. It means looking beyond. Seeking bold ideas. Tackling problems that most others think are impossible. The result is innovation that can make an impact on our community.
Deloitte is proud to work with The Richmond Forum.
THE STATE OF THE WORLD, ACCORDING TO McMASTER
UNITED STATES
“As our foreign policies swung from over-optimism to resignation, identity politics interacted with new forms of populism. That interaction divided us and diminished confidence in our democratic principles, institutions, and processes. We might apply empathy to ourselves as well as to the other and, as we discuss the challenges we face, seek a common understanding, and work together to secure freedom and prosperity for future generations.”
Battlegrounds, Sept. 2020
UKRAINE
RUSSIA
“I don’t think a nuclear weapon is usable [in Ukraine]. I think that we ought to take it seriously—we have to—but we ought to not allow this to cow us in terms of the support for the Ukrainians.”
CBS News, Oct. 2022
CBS News, Feb. 2022
“As ugly as democracy is, democracies are actually pretty darn resilient and you see that with Ukrainians. I hope Ukrainians inspire confidence in all of us across the free world.”
IRAN AFGHANISTAN
“What has been different about [the wave of civil unrest after the death of Mahsa Amini] is that it is being sustained over multiple days, it’s national and it’s widespread. So far, the IRGC and the Basij...have been unable to stop it...I think stability in Iran is a myth and I think [the new wave of civil unrest] could be the beginning of the end.”
Hoover Institution, Sept. 2022
"We talked ourselves into defeat in Afghanistan. We had a sustainable commitment and we were engaged in a righteous and worthwhile mission…a mission that was grounded in our interests and in the interests of all humanity...We are facing the growth, now, of a multigenerational problem of jihadist terrorism, and disengaging from it is not the answer because it seeds the initiative and resources to our determined, brutal, murderous enemies.”
Wilson Center, Aug. 2021
CHINA
“[Our previous approach] was still based on this assumption that we were going to change China — that our international approach would essentially moderate China’s behavior and the Chinese Communist Party would eventually see the tremendous benefit of playing by the rules. I think we have to take a different approach at this point. I think we have to recognize that the party is what the party is — especially under Xi Jinping, who has extended his rule already once and will do so again, almost certainly...I think it’s really important for us to recognize the need for multilateral cooperation.”
NPR, April 2021
NORTH KOREA
“If North Korea’s ultimate goal is a ‘final victory,’ defined by a unified Korea, acknowledging North Korea as a limited nuclear power and pursuing a strategy of containment is not acceptable. It seems clear that U.S. strategy should be to sustain international support behind a strategy of maximum pressure to test the thesis that Kim Jong Un can be convinced that his regime is safer without nuclear weapons than it is with them.”
Institution, March 2021 HooverFor your strong leadership, thank you, H. R. McMaster. Your astounding achievements prove that with resilience, courage, and determination, we can stand firm in our convictions and conquer any challenge that may rise in our path with grace. www.vacancer.com

THE DECORATIONS OF AN “ICONOCLAST GENERAL”
FROM EARNING A SILVER STAR for his command of the Eagle Troop of the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment at the Battle of 73 Easting in the Gulf War, to receiving his third award of the Army Distinguished Service Medal upon his retirement in 2018, H.R. McMaster has collected near countless military decorations. Get an inside look at his celebrated career through a selection of these awards below, listed in order of precedence, and see if you can spot them on the cover.
The Army Distinguished Service Medal is presented to soldiers who have distinguished themselves by exceptionally meritorious service to the government in a duty of great responsibility.
The Silver Star is the United States Armed Forces’ third-highest military decoration for valor in combat. It is awarded primarily for gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States.
The Defense Superior Service Medal is bestowed by the Department of Defense upon service members who perform superior meritorious service in a position of significant responsibility.
The Legion of Merit is given for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements and is typically reserved for senior officers at O-6 level and above.
The Bronze Star is awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces who have distinguished themselves by heroic or meritorious achievement or service.
The Purple Heart is awarded in the name of the president to those wounded or killed while serving. The Purple Heart is the oldest military award still given to U.S. military members.
The Valorous Unit Award is the second highest United States Army unit decoration. It is awarded to units which display extraordinary heroism in action against an armed enemy of the United States.
The Humanitarian Service Medal is awarded for meritorious participation in humanitarian military acts or operations, such as natural disaster relief, evacuation of non-combatants from a hostile area, or support to refugees.

RHIANNON GIDDENS
AT THE RICHMOND FORUM MAY 21, 2022
THE 2022 BIG RETURN OF THE RICHMOND FORUM ENDED ON A HIGH NOTE WITH GRAMMY AWARDWINNER RHIANNON GIDDENS.
As an acclaimed musician, Giddens embraces the historical background of Americana to create new compositions that shine a light on elements that went unseen in the past.
“It’s hard to talk about music, it’s like singing about dance.” Giddens began the evening admitting that although she is no historian, she has used her musical prowess to investigate the past and strung together an evolving understanding of Americana music, starting with the banjo.
The symbol and sound of the banjo have been used in American music since its origins, but when Giddens discovered that the banjo had African roots, it opened up a new understanding of musical universalism. “I love to know more. I love to know I didn’t quite have something right, but now I do.” Her investigation led her to find that the banjo was a key player in creating music that “could create a sense of family and community” among enslaved people by uniting themes of kinship, unity, and resistance in song.
“When you look for African American history, you have to look for details in unexpected places.” Because of the lack of historical documentation from enslaved people, Giddens focused much of her research on slave advertisements, including those for runaway fiddlers
Rhiannon Giddens displayed her musical virtuosity interspersed with a fascinating story of her life and music. Top: Will Hershey, CEO, Davenport & Company, the Lead Patron for the evening, introduced Rhiannon Giddens. Bottom: Kishanti Barmoh, a Richmond Forum Scholar, had the pleasure of ushering Rhiannon Giddens throughout the evening.who played in popular string bands in Virginian and Carolinian ballrooms. In her research, she discovered an advertisement from the 1800’s for an enslaved woman for sale, along with her 9-monthold child to come along “at the purchaser’s option.” She presented her original song inspired by this discovery to the Forum audience with the refrain of “You can take my body, but not my soul.”
Giddens confessed to the crowd, “If I leave nothing else behind in this world, if it’s this one song, I feel like it was a life well lived. It is our responsibility to make sure that the voices of the people who came before us, who didn’t have opportunities to be heard, to do whatever we can to make them heard.”
made the audience fall in love with Giddens’ breezy presence, despite the difficult subjects confronted in her talk like minstrelsy and blackface. She acknowledged that these unpleasant aspects of history are precisely why its importance is brushed under the rug. Despite today’s apt distaste for the negative aspects of minstrelsy, African American string band players had true impact on American—and thereafter, worldwide—musical history.
Rhiannon Giddens explained her journey of falling in love with the banjo and working as a caller for square dancers. She turned that love into her work after her time at the renowned Oberlin Conservatory of Music. This authentic exploration
An artist, creator, and critical thinker, Rhiannon Giddens ended her evening with The Forum by challenging the audience to, when confronted with new information, ask themselves, “Why don’t I know that?” That question truly embodied the spirit of The Richmond Forum and was the perfect send-off for an extraordinary season.
Moderator Valerie Cassel Oliver asked Rhiannon audience questions. Top: Guests of SingleStone, the Host Patron for the evening, enjoyed dinner with Rhiannon Giddens. Bottom: Rhiannon Giddens answered questions in the Student Room.RICHMOND FORUM SPEAKERS

SPEECH & DEBATE INITIATIVE
THE RICHMOND FORUM SPEECH & DEBATE INITIATIVE’S goal is to have competitive speech and debate teams in all of the region’s public middle and high schools by 2025.
Entering its fifth year, and with 29 partner teams established, RFSDI provides:
Team funding for tournament entry fees, travel, and meals, Memberships to the National Speech & Debate Association for coaches and students, Training for coaches paired with an incentive pay program, Speech and debate camp sponsorship for students, and A volunteer judges bank to supply tournament judges.
We are UNRELENTING.
We focus on improving health for all people. Our care for those with sickle cell disease — a painful blood condition mainly affecting Black people — goes beyond pain management and treatments.
It’s about impact. Offering a medical home — a place of comfort and hope that helps them tackle the everyday challenges of the disease. Here, we treat the big things, the little things and everything in between.
Welcome to VCU Health. A world UNLIKE any other.
KendriceMICHELLE OBAMA
FOR THE SECOND TIME IN FORUM HISTORY
—the first being President Barack Obama’s appearance at The Forum in 2017—over 6,000 subscribers, community members, and students attended our special program with former First Lady Michelle Obama, at the Altria Theater and live via satellite at the Dominion Energy Center.
When Mrs. Obama took to the stage, her remarks encouraged young people to seek out change in their daily lives without pressuring themselves too much to check aspirational boxes, as they will have more than enough time in their lives to explore all of their passions with time like she has. She also shared the message with parents that the values of love and family are the most important things to provide in a child’s life. Her message of understanding reached beyond the family as she spoke about how society can move forward to a brighter future through civil discourse.
“You can’t just go to the straight hard issues, first you have to build familiarity and trust. I think that’s work that, in some ways, has been put on hold because of the pandemic. We have lost our muscles for social connection and interaction, and much of that is out of the necessity to stay safe, but that’s important. Before I can talk to somebody about politics, I have to be able to connect to them on a basic level.”
We are so proud to have brought the former first lady to Richmond to connect with our audience. Thanks to ticket sales and donations, we raised more than $180,000 to provide resources to speech and debate students, coaches, and teams in 2022–2023 and beyond.

MARIA RESSA
THE INTEGRITY OF FACTS
Maria Ressa won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021 for her fearless defense of independent journalism and freedom of expression in the Philippines, and particularly for her work exposing the human rights abuses of authoritarian President Rodrigo Duterte. Her remarkable work in the Philippines, including founding and leading digital media company Rappler, led her to important observations on how social media is used to spread fake news, harass opponents, and manipulate public discourse. Ressa’s reflections on the resulting impact on democracy will be incredibly timely. (Format: Speech with Q&A)

UN FLAP PABLE
An iconoclast general with 34 years of military service as a pre-eminent “warrior-intellectual.” An unflappable leader and influencer who challenges the status quo. And what we have in common is uncommon Because just like Lieutenant General H.R. McMaster, we are not looking to conform. We challenge traditional thinking in pursuit of a future built by us.
VCU. A world unlike any other.
