Executive Director Welcome to the 29th season of The Richmond Forum and the beautifully renovated Altria Theater! We are delighted to have you with us tonight and excited for you to see the end result of the final summer of construction here at the theater, from even more new restrooms, to two new elevators, beautiful lounges and concession areas, a new sound system, and the fully restored historic décor throughout. Once again, our community can be proud to have a grand, state-of-the-art theater for events of all kinds, and The Richmond Forum is ensured of a wonderful home for decades to come. Our appreciation goes to Altria, Dominion, the City of Richmond, and a host of other generous donors who have made this possible. Tonight’s speaker is a powerhouse. In July 2012, at nearly 64 years of age, Diana Nyad announced on her blog that she would make an attempt to swim from Havana, Cuba to Key West, Florida. This was not her first attempt; that was 35 years earlier, in 1978. Nor was it her second or even third attempt. This would be Diana Nyad’s fourth attempt to complete her nearly lifelong “extreme dream.” She wrote that many people had been sending her a famous quote from Teddy Roosevelt, “and I read it with pulse pounding these days.” That quote: The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least
fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat. How many of us are actually in the arena, attempting great things? Further, what pushes some people, like tonight’s speaker, to go boldly to the very center of the arena, where the challenges are the most unimaginable and insurmountable and where failure is the most likely, dramatic, and public? It’s no surprise that, in preparing for tonight’s program, I have thought a lot about David Blaine, who appeared on our stage in 2011 to talk about his feats of physical endurance. (I don’t know if they’ve ever met, but Mr. Blaine and Ms. Nyad surely share some common “super endurance” DNA.) I’ve also thought about the others who have been invited to speak here because they, too, have gone to the center of the arena for their chance to “dare greatly,” whether in leadership or science or the arts. We admire these people because they inspire the rest of us to come a little farther into the arena, to be less timid about proclaiming our own dreams, and to boldly pursue them. Diana Nyad did make that fourth attempt in 2012, but she came up short—shorter than ever before, in fact. Of course, that’s not why she’s here tonight. She’s here because she made a fifth attempt. We hope that you enjoy your evening with the amazing Diana Nyad.

Diana Nyad has always had big goals, even as a child. She knew she wanted to be a great athlete and travel the world, and in a fifth-grade essay, she worried, “my 70 years are going to go by too quickly.” Today, she is one of the most famous swimmers in history and holds the record as the first person to successfully swim from Cuba to Key West without a shark tank. Born in New York, Nyad moved to Florida a few years later and by seventh grade was swimming full-time. She continued to swim throughout high school, training at the Pine Crest School under Hall of Famer and former Olympian Jack Nelson. Before graduating, Nyad won three state swimming championships in backstroke and was on course to compete in the 1986 Olympics when she was waylaid with endocarditis for three months. By the time she was back in the water, she had lost some of her speed, as well as the Olympic opportunity. In her twenties, Nyad trained in marathon swimming with Buck Dawson, then-director of the International Swimming Hall of Fame. She began to break records in competitive
racing. She set a new women’s time in the Bay of Naples race, beat a five-decade-old time record for circling Manhattan Island, and then, on her thirtieth birthday, set a world record in a 102-mile swim from the Bahamas to Florida. She swam all over the world, including parts of the Suez Canal in Egypt, the Parana River in Argentina, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, and Lake Ontario, where she swam against the currents from Toronto to New York. While she announced her retirement from swimming in 1979, with her first failed attempt to swim from Cuba to Key West behind her, Nyad remained closely connected to the world of sports. She became a prominent sports broadcaster and journalist, covering the Olympics and world championships for television networks, writing for publications such as Newsweek and The New York Times, and was a frequent contributor to NPR’s All Things Considered and Marketplace. She varied her journalism career by hosting a weekly radio program, The Savvy Traveler, for seven years on Minnesota Public Radio, and authored three books: Other Shores, a 1978 memoir; Basic Training for Women in 1981, and Boss of Me: The Keyshawn Johnson Story,” the 1999 biography of former NFL player Keyshawn Johnson. She is working on a new memoir, expected to be released in the spring of 2015. Nyad was inducted into the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame in 1978 and the United States National Women’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1986. On the heels of her successful swim from Cuba to Key West in 2013, this year has seen her receive multiple awards, including ESPN’s first Sports Science Newton Award in the category of Outstanding New Limit, and the Orden al Mérito Deportivo Award from Cuba.

We are pleased to present Bio Ritmo as our musical guest tonight, in celebration of Diana Nyad’s 2013 swim originating in Cuba (and her stint on Dancing With the Stars). Bio Ritmo is recognized around the world as one of the most intriguing and influential Latin dance bands of the last two decades, performing the Afro-Cuban-rooted 70s Latin sound that came to be known as “salsa.” Based in Richmond, Bio Ritmo has toured across North America and Europe, including the Republic of Georgia. In 2015, the band will make its first appearance in Latin America. In June 2014, the band released its ninth full-length album entitled Puerta Del Sur
(Door to the South) on the veteran Spanish label, Vampisoul Records. The album received global acclaim, ranking on numerous top-ten world and Latin music charts with critics calling the group “Latin music visionaries” and “one of the most innovative salsa bands of the 21st century.” You can catch Bio Ritmo’s most recent feature performance on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts blog.

Defined as the passage that connects the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean, the Florida Straits is a trough that separates the Florida Peninsula from Cuba and the Bahamas. When Diana Nyad completed her record-breaking swim from Cuba to Key West, she wrote herself into the storied annals of the Straits. In recent decades, and throughout the previous centuries, brave souls have taken to these waters in pursuit of freedom, exploration, and riches. While Nyad fought her way across this passage to achieve her very personal extreme dream, Cuban defectors, often called balseros after their precarious handmade boats and rafts, have been attempting the same crossing for decades to reach their dreams of a better life. Seeking freedom from Communism and the Castro regime, hundreds of thousands of Cubans have emigrated illegally to the United States by crossing the Florida Straits, with an estimated 50% of them dying from drowning, sharks, and dehydration along the way. Perhaps the most famous refugee in recent history is Elián Gonzalez, the six-year-old boy who lost his mother and her boyfriend in a 1999 crossing and sparked months of political and social outcry over whether he should be allowed to stay in the United States or return to Cuba with his father.
In 1996, the Cuban Adjustment Act, popularly known as the Wet-Foot/Dry-Foot Act, was passed to address the large influx of refugees (125,000 arriving in 1980, and another 35,000 in 1994) by providing a special procedure to obtain permanent residence in the U.S. The act allows any Cuban automatic asylum if s/he manages to walk onto land anywhere other than an official U.S. port of entry. Refugees intercepted in the water are either returned to Cuba or held in temporary camps where they can apply for asylum. According to an August NPR report, the U.S. Coast Guard had so far intercepted 3,000 refugees in 2014, the highest number in five years. Not everyone who has sailed the Straits has done so for such dramatic reasons. Many explorers have studied her waters. In 1867, Louis F. de Pourtalès began dredging operations to determine the waterway’s depth, discovering the deepest waters in the Straits went to 700 fathoms. This past summer, Robert Ballard explored the Florida Straits, where the deep water still contains some of the greatest species richness in the Atlantic Ocean. Commerce and plunder also factor into the history of the Straits. The same prevailing winds and strong currents that make a Cubato-Florida passage so challenging have long favored the transport of goods by ships that followed the Gulf Stream through the Straits to the East Coast or Europe. In the early 1700s, one of history’s most famous pirates, Blackbeard, worked this busy shipping lane. By using the town of Nassau as their base in the Bahamas, pirates had easy access to jump out quickly and raid merchant vessels as they sailed past. Fort Jefferson, a former U.S. naval base in the Florida Straits. It was used to suppress piracy in the Caribbean.

Garry Trudeau What A Long, Strange Strip It’s Been January 24, 2015 Garry Trudeau’s Doonesbury comic strip launched in 1970, and now appears in nearly 1,400 daily and Sunday newspapers in the U.S. and abroad. In 1975, Trudeau became the first comic strip artist ever to be awarded a Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning for the strip that The New York Times described as a “sprawling masterwork.” Trudeau will discuss the evolution of the strip and his characters’ maturation— from college students to youthful senior citizens—as well as his latest venture as creator and writer of the political comedy Internet series, Alpha House.
