Executive Director Welcome to the 27th season of The Richmond Forum! Ever since we announced this season’s speakers in March, the enthusiasm level has been incredible, reflected by the highest subscriber renewal rate in Forum history and the non-stop ringing of our office phones. We’re thrilled to have you all with us for what is sure to be a very memorable season. Tonight, we kick off this amazing season with Platon, a speaker who will enthrall you with his portraits of world leaders and the powerful stories behind each image—stories that we feel sure you will be sharing with your friends in the weeks to come. The truth is, a great portrait tells its own story for years and generations to come. In January, we’ll be talking about President Abraham Lincoln with Steven Spielberg, Doris Kearns Goodwin, and Tony Kushner. In preparing for both of these programs, I couldn’t help but think about the numerous portraits made of Lincoln by Matthew Brady. The first, shown here, was made in Brady’s New York studio on February 27, 1860, the same day as Lincoln’s now-famous Cooper Union address. Those who have studied the wet-plate negative can tell that Brady’s assistants retouched the image to straighten the presidential candidate’s “roving” left eye and smooth the lines on his face. Lincoln is purported to have said, “Brady and the Cooper Union speech made me president of the United States…[the photograph] dispelled the opposition based on the rumours of my long ungainly figure, large feet, clumsy hands, and long, gaunt head; making me into a man of human aspect and dignified bearing.” Were we able to magically do so, I would love to present a conversation between Matthew
Brady and Platon at The Richmond Forum. Imagine the stories they could share! I am pleased to announce that tonight’s program will be the first-ever Richmond Forum presented in high-definition (HD) video on the big screen in the theater, as well as in the Student Room. While HD is commonplace at home these days, the cameras and projectors needed for a theater environment are still tremendously expensive, so we’re very excited that BVC, our audio visual partner, has worked with us to bring HD to our programs to further enhance your Forum experience. Please enjoy your evening and this entire season at The Richmond Forum! Bill Chapman bill@richmondforum.org

The internationally-acclaimed, award-winning photographer known simply as Platon has created powerful portraits of over 120 heads of state, including Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Tony Blair, Vladimir Putin, Dmitry Medvedev, Muammar al-Gaddafi, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Benjamin Netanyahu, Hugo Chavez, Robert Mugabe, and Silvio Berlusconi. A gifted storyteller, Platon will share the captivating stories behind the portraits and the poignant insights he has gleaned from the international faces of power in front of his lens. Born in London in 1968, Platon Antoniou was raised in the Greek Isles until his family returned to England in the 1970s. He attended St. Martin’s School of Art and, after receiving his B.A. with honors in Graphic Design, he went on to receive an M.A. in Photography and Fine Art at the Royal College of Art. After working for British Vogue for several years, he was invited to New York in 1998 to work for the late John F. Kennedy, Jr. and his political magazine, George. After shooting portraits for a range of international publications, including Rolling Stone, The New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair, Esquire, GQ, and The Sunday Times Magazine, Platon developed a special relationship with TIME magazine, producing over 20 covers. In 2007, Platon photographed Russian President Vladimir Putin for TIME magazine’s Person of the Year cover. This image was awarded first prize at the World Press Photo Contest. Platon has also produced a series of award-winning photo essays for The New Yorker, focused on themes that have included President Obama’s Inauguration, the U.S. Military, portraits of world leaders, and the Civil Rights Movement. In 2009, he teamed up with Human
Rights Watch to help them celebrate those who fight for equality and justice in countries suppressed by political forces. These projects highlighted human rights defenders from Burma (just days after her release from house arrest, Platon photographed Aung San Suu Kyi for the cover of TIME), as well as the leaders of the Egyptian revolution. Platon’s first monograph, Platon’s Republic, was published in 2004 with corresponding exhibitions of his work at the Ex-Saatchi Gallery in London and the Milk Gallery in New York. Power, a collection of Platon’s portraits of over 100 world leaders, was published in 2011. In recent years, Platon has been a keynote speaker at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Yale, the London School of Economics, the National Portrait Gallery in London, and the International Center of Photography in New York. He has also appeared on a range of television programs, including Charlie Rose, Morning Joe, Fareed Zakaria’s GPS, and BBC World News. Platon lives in New York with his wife, daughter, and son.

Since 1984, we’ve been “a place to call home” for over 130,000 out of town patients and family members while they receive critical medical care at Richmond-area hospitals. As the premier area provider of lodging and non-medical services, our mission is to serve referred families in a home-like environment with dignity and integrity and without regard to financial resources.

Steven Spielberg, Doris Kearns Goodwin & Tony Kushner Bringing History to Life on Film January 5, 2013 Steven Spielberg filmed the newly-released Lincoln in our city. In January, he will return for an exclusive Richmond Forum conversation with historian Doris Kearns Goodwin and screenwriter Tony Kushner. The three will take us behind the scenes to explore the process of bringing history to life on film—the critical choices and challenges of achieving historical accuracy within the need for a compelling narrative, and the process that affects everything from script to casting to locations to final print. They will also discuss how Hollywood has embraced historical films throughout its own history and what their impact has been. The screenplay, written by Kushner, is based in part on Goodwin’s book, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln.
