Ambassador Samantha Power is a leading voice for principled American engagement in the world, global cooperation, and human rights. She has a unique perspective, spending half of her career explaining complex geopolitical events and eight years helping to shape them, ultimately as the youngest-ever United States Ambassador to the United Nations. Samantha Power began her career as a war correspondent, reporting from places such as Bosnia, East Timor, Kosovo, Rwanda, Sudan, and Zimbabwe. She was a columnist for TIME and regularly has contributed to The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, and The Atlantic, which published her National Magazine Award-winning article, “Bystanders to Genocide.” Power founded the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School, where she serves as the Anna Lindh Professor of the Practice of Global Leadership and Public Policy. In 2003, her book “A Problem from Hell”: America and the Age of Genocide won the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction. The New Republic praised it as “nothing less than a masterwork of contemporary journalism.” Her public service career began in 2005 when she joined the office of U.S. Senator Barack Obama as foreign policy advisor. From 2009 to 2013, she served on the National Security Council as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights. In 2012, President Obama appointed her to chair the newly created Atrocities Prevention Board to address global human rights abuses. In July 2013, Power was confirmed as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.
Ambassador Power played a significant role in standing up to Russian aggression in Ukraine and Syria, securing the release of political prisoners, and helping mobilize global responses to the North Korean nuclear threat, the massive refugee crisis, and the rise of ISIL. After the end of her term in January 2017, Power returned to teaching at Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Law School. She is writing her forthcoming memoir, The Education of an Idealist, which will chronicle her “transition from critic of U.S. foreign policy to U.S. government official.” Called by Forbes “a powerful crusader for U.S foreign policy as well as human rights and democracy,” Power was named one of Foreign Policy’s “Top 100 Global Thinkers,” and won the 2016 Henry A. Kissinger Prize for “exceptional contributions to trans-Atlantic relations.” With her family, Power immigrated to the United States from Ireland at age nine. She earned a B.A. from Yale University and a J.D. from Harvard Law School. She is married to legal scholar Cass Sunstein, with whom she has two children.

ON U.S. RESPONSE TO GENOCIDE An excerpt from “A Problem from Hell”: America and the Age of Genocide (2003) People have explained U.S. failures to respond to specific genocides by claiming that the United States didn’t know what was happening, that it knew but didn’t care, or that regardless of what it knew, there was nothing useful to be done. I have found that, in fact, U.S. policy makers knew a great deal about the crimes being perpetrated. Some Americans cared and fought for action, making considerable personal and professional sacrifices. And the United States did have countless opportunities to mitigate and prevent slaughter. But time and again, decent men and women chose to look away. We have all been bystanders to genocide. The crucial question is why. ON BOMBINGS AND AIR STRIKES IN ALEPPO, SYRIA Address to the U.N. General Assembly on December 13, 2016 To the Al-Assad regime, Russia, and Iran, I say to you that your forces and proxies are carrying out these crimes [that] have allowed the militias in Aleppo to encircle tens of thousands of civilians in their ever-tightening noose. It is your noose—three Member States of the United Nations—contributing to a noose around civilians. It should shame you. Instead, by all appearances, it is emboldening you; you are plotting your next assault. Are you truly incapable of shame? Is there literally nothing that can shame you? ON THE THREAT OF RUSSIA Final address as U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. on January 17, 2017 At first glance, these interventions by Russia in different parts of the world can appear unrelated. That is because the common thread running through them cannot be found in anything that Russia is for—but rather in what Russia is against. Not in the rules it follows, but in the ones it breaks. Russia’s actions are not standing up a new world order. They are tearing down the one that exists. This is what we are fighting against—having defeated the forces of fascism and communism, we now confront the forces of authoritarianism and nihilism.

An Overview of U.S. Foreign Policy In George Washington’s Farewell Address in 1796, he warned the nation to “steer clear of permanent alliance with any portion of the foreign world.” Some of his successors’ administrations took the message to heart and isolated the United States from global conflicts and interests; others, particularly from the 20th century onward, diverged towards an interventionist approach to world affairs, favoring a strong U.S. presence across the globe. “Europe has a set of primary interests, which to us “With the existing colonies or dependencies of have none, or a very remote relation...Therefore, any European power we have not interfered it must be unwise [for] us to implicate ourselves, and shall not interfere.” by artificial ties, in the ordinary vicissitudes of –James Monroe, 1823 her politics, or the ordinary combinations and Monroe Doctrine collisions of her friendships, or enmities.” –George Washington, 1796 “Chronic wrongdoing, or an impotence which Farewell Address results in a general loosening of the ties of civilized society, may in America...ultimately “Peace, commerce, and honest friendship with require intervention by some civilized nation, all nations, entangling alliances with none...I and in the Western Hemisphere the adherence of deem [one of ] the essential principles of our the United States to the Monroe Doctrine may government, and consequently [one of ] those force the United States, however reluctantly, in which ought to shape its administration.” flagrant cases of such wrongdoing or impotence, –Thomas Jefferson, 1801 to the exercise of an international police power.” –Theodore Roosevelt, 1904 Roosevelt Corollary & “Big Stick” policy

Earlier today, the 21st annual Governor’s School Model United Nations (GSMUN XXI) welcomed Ambassador Samantha Power as our keynote speaker. On behalf of my school, I would like to thank the generous sponsors, subscribers, and staff of The Richmond Forum as well as the supporters of the Ralph Krueger Memorial Fund who made this deeply enriching opportunity possible. Each year, nearly 500 middle and high school students attend GSMUN and debate in studentrun committees, which range from traditional bodies like the U.N. Security Council to innovative ones such as the House of Saud and the Cabinet of Charles de Gaulle. Delegates were able to hear from Ambassador Power on America’s role in global cooperation. Following GSMUN XXI’s theme of “Champion the Change,” the official conference
charity is Love146, an international human rights organization that strives to end child trafficking. Cofounded by Rob Morris, Love146’s efforts take the form of prevention programs and survivor care, which include two rehabilitation homes in the Philippines. For twenty years, GSMUN has sought to instill in each delegate a recognition of the power they hold as the leaders of today—whether in their school or their community— so that they can approach that responsibility with compassion, brilliant ingenuity, and an unfettered determination to champion the change. GSMUN is proud of our ongoing partnership with The Richmond Forum for delivering an unparalleled experience to enthusiastic students. Catherine Y. Qian Secretary-General, GSMUN XXI
About Model U.N. Model United Nations is an academic opportunity for middle school, high school, and college students to engage with the challenging global and diplomatic issues of our time. Student delegates are sorted into committees and each assigned a country—and often a specific real-world delegate—to represent for the conference. They are given a topic in advance to research and be prepared for public speaking and debate with the other delegates on their committee, while maintaining the political position of their U.N. Member State counterpart. This year marks the fifth year that the partnership between GSMUN and The Richmond Forum has provided the opportunity for student delegates to hear a keynote address from a leading global thinker. Past speakers include PM Gordon Brown, former Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, PM Julia Gillard, PM Ehud Barak, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei. This afternoon, Samantha Power became the first U.N. delegate to address GSMUN.

Peter H. Diam andis Future Tech: Exponential Change, Infinite Possibilities
In February, future tech entrepreneur Dr. Peter H. Diamandis delivered a survey of exponential technologies and how they will dramatically change our future—for the better, he believes.
“Bright, articulate, and engaging, Peter Diamandis’ presentation was packed with information to ponder. I woke up this morning still thinking about the possibilities and challenges for our world’s future. This was the most mind-boggling and thought-provoking Forum program that I have ever attended.” Subscriber comment
“Peter Diamandis is one of the most charismatic speakers we’ve seen at The Forum. His intellect and command of subject matter were electrifying.” Subscriber comment
Ambient electronic music from artist Quilla set the stage for an evening about the future.
Through an array of photos, charts, and videos, Dr. Diamandis led attendees through his optimistic view of the future, despite what people may hear in the news. “I’m positive about the future because I don’t watch the news, and I look at the data,” Diamandis explained at The Forum. The data tell a positive story: poverty is the lowest in history, mortality rates are down, life expectancy is up, and we are living in the most peaceful time in human history.
Lynn White, Vice President & Chief of Staff, Genworth Financial, Inc., the Lead Patron for the evening, welcomed Dr. Diamandis to the stage.
“He shined during the Q&A; I wish we had more time.” Subscriber comment
Judy Pahren, Senior Vice President, Human Resources & Central Virginia Market Vice President, Capital One Bank, the Host Patron for the evening, chatted with Anne Krueger, the daughter of Richmond Forum founder Ralph Krueger at a pre-program reception.
“Mind-blowing. One of my favorites so far. This man makes such a positive difference, and how many people have even heard of him? Thank you, Richmond Forum.” Subscriber comment
During the Q&A, many attendees asked what effect advances in AI would have on the future of work, and whether there is a danger in machines becoming too smart. Diamandis discounted the villainous AI sci-fi trope, and instead believes that it is “the greatest tool we will have to solve our problems.”

Ever notice how much hotter it is in a parking lot? All that man-made construction creates an urban heat island that’s as hot as it is unappealing. Plants can help offset some of that heat, so I worked with colleagues and students from across the university to build lowmaintenance green walls that help lower temperatures and beautify the city. My name is Stephen Fong, and taking a stand against climate change by painting the town green is how I challenge the norm. VCU is where I make it real.
