Tonight’s Lead Patron

Dominion [NYSE:D] is a home-grown Richmond company with roots extending back to the Colonial era. By the early 1900s, the company began operating as an electric and gas utility under the name Virginia Electric & Power Co. That utility is now known as Dominion Virginia Power, and it is in its second century as a provider of electric service to the citizens of Virginia. With about 4,000 employees in the Richmond area and more than 9,000 throughout the Commonwealth, today’s Dominion plays a vital role in supporting the state’s economy. Along with helping to meet Virginia’s energy needs, Dominion is a leading provider of energy and related services in the Midwest, mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions of the U.S.—a market of 60 million homes and businesses where 40 percent of the nation’s energy is consumed. Dominion now serves almost 6 million retail electric and natural gas customers in 15 states.

Good corporate citizenship and responsible environmental stewardship are integral to Dominion’s business mission. The company’s philanthropic arm, the Dominion Foundation, provides financial support to qualified nonprofit organizations in communities where the company does business. In addition, employees contribute more than 125,000 hours of volunteer service to their communities each year. Among Dominion’s leading outreach programs are EnergyShare, which provides financial assistance to customers who need help paying their energy bills; Project Plant It!, which distributes tree seedlings to thousands of elementary students to help them learn about the environment; and Strong Men and Women in Virginia History, an educational partnership program that provides young people with role models of accomplished African-Americans. The story of Steve Martin’s journey from working as a teenager at the magic shop in Disneyland to becoming one of America’s most beloved comedians and actors is as entertaining as his many hit films. Born in Waco, Texas and raised in California, Martin studied philosophy at California State University and theater at UCLA. His early acting work and standup routines in local nightclubs merged with his fascination with philosophical theory to produce a uniquely absurdist style of humor. From his instantly recognized exclamation, “Excuuuuuuuse me!”, to his “Wild and crazy guy” character, to his physical comedy and dramatic turns, Martin is one of the most talented and diversified performers in the entertainment industry today. An actor, comedian, author, playwright, producer, and musician, Martin is an iconic figure whose roles are forever ingrained in our popular culture. The Jerk; Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid; ¡Three Amigos!; Roxanne; Planes, Trains & Automobiles; Dirty Rotten Scoundrels; Parenthood; L.A. Story;

Father of the Bride; The Out-of-Towners; Cheaper by The Dozen; The Pink Panther; It’s Complicated… these are but a handful of his blockbuster films. He’s hosted the Oscars three times and Saturday Night Live 15 times. He’s won four Grammy awards, two for comedy and two for his banjo skills, and he keeps busy offstage collecting art, playing the banjo, and writing. His first two novellas, Shopgirl and The Pleasure of My Company, were ranked on bestseller lists around the country, including The New York Times. His other books include his autobiography, Born Standing Up; two children’s books, The Alphabet from A to Y with Bonus Letter Z!, and Late For School; a bestselling collection of comic pieces, Pure Drivel; and his latest adult novel, An Object of Beauty. Martin is also a talented playwright. His first play, the comedy-drama, Picasso at the Lapin Agile, was presented by Chicago’s prestigious Steppenwolf Theatre and received rave reviews. The play continues to be mounted to critical acclaim in productions worldwide. His other plays include WASP and the dark comedy, The Underpants. The recipient of numerous prestigious awards including the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor and the Kennedy Center Honor, Martin recently was presented with an Honorary Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. This Oscar statuette is given “to honor extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, and for outstanding service to the Academy.” Martin’s remarkably wide-ranging and prolific career in stand-up, film, television, music, books, and art has made him one of the most influential entertainers of our time.

He has given life to characters like oddball man-child Ed Grimley, lawyer Nathan Thurm, aging songwriter Irving Cohen, and clueless talk show host Jiminy Glick. His impersonations of Jerry Lewis and Katherine Hepburn are riotous send-ups. He’s portrayed the unluckiest man in the world, a full-grown 10-year-old, an obscenely rich former radio star with a powerful upper torso but no use of his legs, a silent movie star mistaken for a real-life hero by Mexican villagers, and, of course, a wedding planner. As a celebrated comedian and actor, Martin Short has won fans and earned accolades in television, film, and theater since his breakout season on Saturday Night Live 30 years ago. Born and raised in Canada, Short planned to pursue a career in social work, but a role in the 1971 Toronto production of Godspell changed that. Among the members of that production’s cast were Gilda Radner and Eugene Levy, with Paul Shaffer as musical director. Short won his first Emmy in 1982 while working on Canada’s SCTV Comedy Network, earning him an offer to join the cast of NBC’s Saturday Night Live in New York. His breathlessly eccentric stable of characters quickly made him a fan favorite. Short’s comedic appeal easily crossed over into feature films. He made his debut in ¡Three Amigos!, followed by Inner Space, Three Fugitives, Clifford, and Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks. One of his most memorable roles was in the remake of Father of the Bride, as Franck the wedding planner, a role he reprised a few years later in Father of the Bride Part II. An accomplished stage actor, Short won a Tony and an Outer Critics Circle Award for his role in the revival of Little Me. He was nominated again for both awards for his work in

the musical version of Neil Simon’s The Goodbye Girl. Short co-wrote and starred in Fame Becomes Me, prompting The New York Times to describe him as “a natural for live musicals.” Short returned to television in an Emmynominated role in the mini-series Merlin and as host of The Martin Short Show, which earned him seven Emmy nominations. Short also wrote, produced, and starred in three comedy specials, winning two Cable ACE awards and an Emmy. In 2001, he launched the critically acclaimed Primetime Glick, gathering another five Emmy nominations. Short was nominated for his nineteenth Emmy award in 2010 for his work as the lawyer Leonard Winstone on the critically acclaimed FX series Damages. In 2011, Short joined the cast of the CBS hit comedy series How I Met Your Mother in the recurring role of Garrison Cootes. His voice can be heard as the Cat in the celebrated PBS series, The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That. In 1994, Short was awarded the Order of Canada, the Canadian equivalent to British Knighthood.

Steep Canyon Rangers Hailing from Brevard, North Carolina, the Steep Canyon Rangers are quietly becoming the most influential ambassadors of bluegrass music in America. In 2013, the band’s eighth record, Nobody Knows You, won the Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album. The previous year, their collaboration with banjoist Steve Martin, entitled Rare Bird Alert, was nominated for the same award. In 2011, the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) awarded Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers its Entertainer of the Year award. In 2008, the band was nominated for IBMA’s Album and Gospel Performance of the Year Awards. Most discussions about the Steep Canyon Rangers quickly involve mention of Steve Martin. After meeting at a party and immediately finding common ground, Martin invited the band to tour and record with him. They average about 50 dates a year together touring as Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers, most recently with the addition of special guest vocalist Edie Brickell. Collectively, they are proud to expose legions of new fans to the bluegrass genre. The band has appeared on Austin City

Limits, the Late Show with David Letterman, Prairie Home Companion, and The Today Show, and performed at Carnegie Hall, the Grand Ole Opry, MerleFest, Neil Young’s Bridge School Benefit, and in their own Mountain Song Festival and Mountain Song at Sea cruise. With the release of their new album, Tell the Ones I Love, Steep Canyon Ranger Graham Sharp says the band hopes to “be a bridge between the bluegrass crowd and a wider audience that may not be die-hard bluegrass fans.” Early results indicate the band’s success in doing just that. Engine 145, the widely-respected music publication, writes, “In case anyone’s forgotten, Tell the Ones I Love is a musical twoby-four over the head of a reminder that Steep Canyon Rangers are a force, with or without a wild and crazy guy. The Rangers continue pushing their sound forward … unabashedly mixing country, pop, and folk influences.” The Steep Canyon Rangers are (left to right in photo above): Mike Guggino on mandolin, Mike Ashworth on drums, Woody Platt on guitar, Charles Humphrey III on upright bass, Nicky Sanders on fiddle, and Graham Sharp on banjo.

In October, Weldon Bradshaw was told he had 7 days to live. He had a rare disease, PSC, that was shutting down his liver. He needed a miracle. What he got, was even better. A healthy liver. It became available thanks to VCU’s advances in expanding the adult donor pool. Now Weldon can worry about more important things - like having dinner with his wife. Gordon Brown at The Richmond Forum March 15, 2014

Amanda and Glen Kelley, Regional President, Wells Fargo, the Lead Patron for the evening, welcomed Gordon Brown to Richmond.

James and Elizabeth Howell, Client Administration Officer, The Trust Company of Virginia, a Producer Patron for the evening, enjoyed dinner with Wayne and Maryclay Smith.

Earlier in the day, Gordon Brown addressed the 500 student delegates of the Governor’s School Model United Nations and presented Secretary-General Matthew King with a gift from the United Nations in New York. Photo: Xiaoqi Li

The Belle Arte String Quartet performed as guests arrived for the program.

previous program

Gordon Brown serves as the United Nations Special Envoy for Global Education and was delighted to address area high school and college students in our Student Room.

Bobbie & Jim Ukrop enjoyed dinner with Elvira Cashel and her son, Aydin, guests of Williams Mullen, a Producer Patron for the evening, and Owen Ayers, a Richmond Forum Scholar.

Gordon Brown provided an important and timely speech on our future in the changing world. I think his points about focusing on education—especially related to science, technology, math, and engineering (STEM) — were right on. Subscriber survey comment

Questions submitted by the audience expanded on the former UK Prime Minister’s theme of the global trends that will reshape the world in 2025.

Amazing speaker. Truly a ‘citizen of the world.’ Subscriber survey comment

At the dessert reception following the program, Mark Hourigan, President, Hourigan Construction, the Host Patron for the evening, thanked Gordon Brown for coming to The Richmond Forum.
