Tonight’s Lead Patron

Dominion [NYSE:D] is a home-grown Richmond company with roots extending back to the Colonial era. By the early 1900s, the company began operating as an electric and gas utility under the name Virginia Electric & Power Co. That utility is now known as Dominion Virginia Power, and it is in its second century as a provider of electric service to the citizens of Virginia. With about 4,500 employees in the Richmond area and more than 9,500 throughout the Commonwealth, today’s Dominion plays a vital role in supporting the state’s economy. Along with helping to meet Virginia’s energy needs, Dominion is among the nation’s largest producers and transporters of energy, with a portfolio of more than 25,000 megawatts of power generation, 6,500 miles of electric transmission lines, and 12,200 miles of natural gas transmission, gathering and storage pipeline. Dominion also operates one of the nation’s largest natural gas storage systems and

serves more than 5 million utility and retail energy customers in 14 states. Good corporate citizenship and responsible environmental stewardship are integral to Dominion’s business mission. The company’s philanthropic arm, the Dominion Foundation, provides financial support to qualified nonprofit organizations in communities where the company does business. In addition, employees contribute more than 100,000 hours of volunteer service to their communities each year. Among Dominion’s leading outreach programs are EnergyShare, which provides financial assistance to customers who need help paying their energy bills; Project Plant It!, which distributes tree seedlings to thousands of elementary students to help them learn about the environment; and Strong Men and Women in Virginia History, an educational partnership program that provides young people with role models of accomplished African-Americans. WE HAD HIS BACK.

At Dominion, 1 in 5 new hires is a Veteran. And if they are called to duty, it’s our duty to take care of them and their families. That’s why we cover any difference between their military pay and their Dominion salary and continue benefits for them and their families for up to five years. We depend on our servicemen and women, and they can depend on us.

Krista Tippett is a Peabody Award-winning broadcaster and New York Times bestselling author. In 2014, she was awarded the National Humanities Medal at the White House for “thoughtfully delving into the mysteries of human existence.” Presenting the honor, President Obama said, “On the air and in print, Ms. Tippett avoids easy answers, embracing complexity and inviting people of every background to join her conversation about faith, ethics, and moral wisdom.” Krista grew up in Oklahoma, the granddaughter of a Southern Baptist preacher. She studied history at Brown University and went to Bonn, West Germany in 1983 on a Fulbright Scholarship to study politics in Cold War Europe. In her 20s, she ended up in divided Berlin for most of the 1980s, first as a stringer for The New York Times and a freelance correspondent for Newsweek, The International Herald Tribune, the BBC, and Die Zeit. She later became a special assistant to the U.S. Ambassador to West Germany. Krista left Berlin in 1988, the year before the Wall fell. She lived in Spain, England, and Scotland for a time, then pursued a Master of Divinity from Yale. When she graduated in 1994, she saw a black hole where intelligent media coverage of religion should be and began to imagine radio conversations about the spiritual and intellectual content of faith that could open imaginations and enrich public life. The radio show she developed—originally called Speaking of Faith—became a monthly series on Minnesota Public Radio in 2001, and a weekly national program in 2003. Now called On Being and produced and distributed by Krista Tippett Public Productions, a non-profit organization, the program is heard on more

than 440 public radio stations and downloaded by millions as a podcast. On Being opens up the animating questions at the center of human life: What does it mean to be human, and how do we want to live? Wisdom and moral imagination is pursued as much as knowledge; nuance and poetry is esteemed as much as fact. In 2007, Krista published her first book, Speaking of Faith, a memoir of religion in our time. In 2010, she published Einstein’s God, drawn from her interviews at the intersection of science, medicine, and spiritual inquiry. Her most recent book, New York Times bestseller Becoming Wise: An Inquiry into the Mystery and Art of Living confronts the central questions and challenges of this century. Maria Popova calls it “a tremendously vitalizing read—a wellspring of nuance and dimension amid our Flatland of artificial polarities, touching on every significant aspect of human life with great gentleness and a firm grasp of human goodness.” Krista’s two children are at the center of her life. She also loves cooking, radio plays, beautiful writing, great science fiction, cross country skiing, and hot yoga.

The Belle Arte String Quartet was formed in 1984 by members of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra to answer a growing need for premium classical music performances. As a quartet, they have performed all over the Commonwealth of Virginia, including at The Homestead, James River plantations, northern Virginia corporate retreats, universities, and many vineyards across the region. The Belle Arte is proud to have been a part of a Virginia governor’s inaugural reception, a 20thcentury composer symposium at Virginia

Commonwealth University, weddings at nearly every church in the Central Virginia area, and more than a few backyard receptions. The quartet maintains a diversified repertoire of classical music as well as other genres. They enjoy personalizing the music for special events and weddings, and often play special requests for theme music from a particular country, time period, or both. Generous Questions

Last month, we solicited your responses to a query posed by tonight’s speaker. We were overwhelmed by your response, not only in quantity but also thoughtfulness. Below and on the pages that follow, we share as many as space will allow. Thank you for your submissions. Krista Tippett asked: Among its many turns, the past year of politics and culture revealed that American life is almost unrecognizably fractured. To reimagine and remake common life has become an urgent twenty-first century civic calling. Like all meaning ful social change, it will be rooted in human change. We need visionaries and activists but just as importantly we need calmers of fear, nourishers of reflection, and people with everyday courage to reach out to neighbors who have become strangers.

Do you see new possibilities for generative change in the world close to you? What is your human, civic calling in this moment?

We’ve met the enemy…it is us! At a time in history when we have more information than ever at our fingertips, we seem the most ignorant to facts and more susceptible to emotions; we are content with yelling at each other, working so hard to make sure we’re right and others are wrong. In a democracy, education and an informed public are critical to its lasting success; for citizens who want to be solutions oriented and work for the greater, larger good (not political party), the risk is one of walking away in frustration, which further ensures the extreme points of view are what becomes the norm in our representative government. My challenge is to ‘not be that guy’ who thinks he knows all the answers or watches only one cable news network to hear what he wants to hear…rather, my opportunity is to engage in different points of view and assume others have even nuggets of truth that can inform my perspective and help me contribute in more meaningful ways.

This election has inspired me to get involved locally to try to make positive changes in my community, but I’ll confess that I’m at a loss as to how to address the larger problem: that the chasm between the left and the right has grown to the point where I can’t even recognize my friends and family standing on the other side of the divide.

...Sitting on the sidelines is no longer an option. Voting alone is no longer an option. Action has to be the calling for all of us. (Continued)

I’ll be an “up stander” rather than a bystander.

For me, the response to this question is captured in the phrase: “Human Progress is An Inside Job.” However much technology has benefited the human species, and it is significant, the evolving of human beings toward seeing clearly and skillful relationships is essential to moving past how ‘American life is almost unrecognizably fractured.’ This fracturing is not only about politics and policies it is even more about having become disconnected from what we have deep inside each of us that is more common than divisive. Learning how each of us is personally struggling with the realities of life and about our deepest aspirations is our common ground. Internal and introspective practices that enhance our self awareness and kindle our inherent longing to be connected to others are the necessary work. Mindfulness practices such as meditation and being more aware of our experiences in each moment will give us the skills to evolve individually and culturally.

Yes, strangely, I do see a change quite possible. This past year has been so horribly rife with issues of Black Lives Matter, police deaths, and political reversals and surprises that are divisive, that I believe a great many of us have had to stop and think of both sides of the issues at hand, and realize that not everyone thinks as we do. So, in a crazy way, we are being forced to look at “the other side” as the American citizens are so divided but are speaking loudly. I am hoping, just like the end of the 60s, our country will take a look and modify toward the middle, having learned what the shouting was about. Nate Parker challenged me to reconcile my deeply held beliefs with my personal actions (and inactions). If we can all work to close that gap, real, generative change will be the outcome.

If we want a better world it begins with each individual person trying to understand others.

I believe opportunities for generative change will come from removing the middle man from as many aspects of my life as possible. For my information, I seek primary sources, eschewing repeaters, obfuscators, and selective editors. For my opinions and ideas, I will develop my own, refusing to farm out that responsibility to commentators charged with filling the hours and pages. For my good works, I seek to make an impact close to home and in direct connection with those in need—not a world away and not through an intermediary, but eye to eye and hand to hand with neighbors in my community. For my personal relationships, I will remove the screens, keyboards, and character limits that reduce human interactions to a depthless single dimension. For my citizenship, I will not sit back and trust that my elected officials will do the right thing; instead, I will be vigilant, engaged, and visible. For my spirituality, I will go direct.

This is something I am struggling with as we speak. I know my calling involves connection—I need to be a part of something that interacts with others—more than just writing a check or taking a survey. My passion seems to be revealing itself in those who seem to be less heard, particularly children. I also have a passion for rehabilitation and prison reform—working to end the school to prison pipeline that is so prevalent in our world today. Much to reflect upon and sort through.

(Continued)

your voices (cont ’d)

I can see people of all political leanings becoming fed up with partisan, polarized conversations. I believe people are reaching a tipping point of exasperation over the current state of politics and are about ready to put aside ideology for the sake of unity. In the political arena, I’ve always seen my calling to be a voice of reason—facts and history over emotion, ideology, and sensationalism. In this age of Tweets, memes and (basically) anonymous commentary, there is a lot of misinformation and dogma to be had, but very little calm, open-minded reasoning based on measurable facts. I try to stay within the confines of fact and logic, then speak that truth whenever I can.

To continue to find ways to ensure that we progress as a society towards more tolerance and inclusiveness, not go backwards to suspicion, angst, and isolationism.

I am a longtime activist who believes in equality and social justice. The riches of my life are the groups and people I’ve been fortunate to work with toward a shared goal, in my professional life and in my volunteer time. So, my calling is to live my life in a way that reflects my values.

Just as important as what you build, is what you build on.

Success starts with a powerful idea. We’re proud to be part of The Richmond Forum’s efforts to bring new thoughts and perspectives to our community. Building success. One story at a time.

I am an eternal optimist, so, of course, I see great generative potential to rebound from the “disorientation” of 2016 to a more powerful “reorientation” in 2017. I believe 2016 taught us that though we all have access to more “information” and “social media” contact than ever before, we often are more likely than ever to feel “alone” and not part of a “community.” And, as the old saying goes, you have to make community “the old fashioned way…..you EARN it”….i.e. by making the time to break bread and share perspectives with those that are close and far from your personal paradigm so as to build a new and improved sense of WE!

Trinity Episcopal School advocates service to one’s community as an important aspect of individual character development and the creation of a strong community. These Trinity students, selected from the School’s Honor Roll, serve as pages for The Richmond Forum this season. Through their service, the students facilitate an exchange of ideas that broadens our understanding of the trends and issues shaping our lives and our community. Ehud Barak & Mohamed ElBaradei Peace in the Middle East: Prospects & Roadblocks March 25, 2017 Ehud Barak has served as the Prime Minister of Israel and, more recently, as Defense Minister. Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei is a Nobel Peace Prize winner, the former head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and was a leading figure in the 2011 Egyptian Revolution. For the first time anywhere, these two respected voices will sit down together for a discussion of their views on Middle East peace prospects in a conversation moderated by longtime journalist, author, and foreign policy analyst Robin Wright.

The announcement of our April 22nd program will take place tonight!

As a team, we play for the name on the front of our jersey, not the back. And the support we receive from donors, alumni and fans is critical to our success. The new practice facility made me not only a better player, but also a better student. VCU is my shot, not just for basketball, but to open as many doors as I can for myself. My name is Mo Alie-Cox.
