letter from the e xecutive director

letter from the

Executive Director Recently I visited the George W. Bush Presidential Library & Museum on the Southern Methodist University campus in Dallas—the first such library that I’ve ever visited. The other dozen are now on my “bucket list.” The museum, which opened last May, makes use of everything from displays of notes scrawled with a presidential Sharpie to the latest in interactive technologies to recount the story of the eight consequential years of the George W. Bush presidency. After completing an exhibit dedicated to No Child Left Behind, I turned a corner to find myself in a gallery devoted to 9/11. A curved wall of granite chiseled with 2,977 names wrapped itself around the room’s centerpiece, a sculpturally twisted tower of iron I-beams from the World Trade Center. Video walls nearby brought back the sights and sounds of that day and the days that followed. Twelve years later, it doesn’t take much to uncover the feelings of that day anew: horror, disbelief, anger, pain. Standing among strangers in the dimly lit space, it was clear I wasn’t alone in fighting back stillraw emotions as we took in too many names; too many Americans lost in an instant. Several exhibits away I could see sunlight streaming through a doorway. For the moment, I bypassed the rest of the 9/11 exhibit, feeling the need to be in that light. The source turned out to be the windows of an exact replica of the Oval Office. Even as I was still feeling the emotions generated by the 9/11 exhibit, a docent eagerly encouraged me to take a seat behind the reproduction Resolute desk for my souvenir photo. It was immediately overwhelming to be sitting behind that massive desk in that office.

Though the responsibility I felt was imagined, it was ponderously heavy. What would I have done if this truly were my desk, my job, and my responsibility? What decisions would I have made that day, and in the days and years to come? How would history judge my best efforts and intents as President of the United States? Tonight, we take a look at what it means to truly occupy the Oval Office. Welcome. Bill Chapman bill@richmondforum.org

George W. Bush, the 43rd President of the United States, served in the Oval Office for eight of the most consequential years in American history. Faced with challenges from a terrorist attack to a global financial crisis, he made difficult decisions that will shape the nation’s course and world affairs for decades to come. Tonight at the Richmond Forum, President Bush will share candid insights on his time in the White House, his experiences with other world leaders, the nature of public leadership, and decision-making. President Bush was born July 6, 1946 to Barbara and George H.W. Bush—later the 41st President of the United States. He grew up in Texas, received a bachelor’s degree in history from Yale University in 1968, and then served as a pilot in the Texas Air National Guard. He received a master’s degree in business administration from Harvard Business School in 1975. His first initiative as President was the No Child Left Behind Act, a bipartisan measure that raised standards in schools, insisted on accountability in return for federal dollars, and

led to measurable gains in achievement, especially among minority students. Faced with a potential recession when he took office, President Bush cut taxes for every federal income taxpayer, helping lead the U.S. to an unprecedented 52 straight months of job creation. He also modernized Medicare by adding a prescription drug benefit that provided access to needed medicine for 40 million seniors. The most significant event of President Bush’s tenure came on September 11, 2001, when terrorists killed nearly 3,000 people on American soil, including the World Trade Center in New York City. President Bush responded with a comprehensive and ground-breaking strategy to protect the American people. He reformed the intelligence community and established new institutions like the Department of Homeland Security. He built global coalitions to remove violent regimes in Afghanistan and Iraq that threatened America, and provided unprecedented American support for young democracies and dissidents in the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and elsewhere. In the more than seven years President Bush remained in office following September 11, the United States was not attacked again. President Bush is married to Laura Welch Bush. They have twin daughters, Barbara and Jenna; a son-in-law, Henry Hager of Richmond; and a granddaughter, Mila Hager. After his Presidency, George and Laura Bush returned to Texas where he founded the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas, Texas. The Center is home to the Bush Presidential Museum and Library, as well as the George W. Bush Institute, a public policy organization focused on economic growth, education reform, global health, and human freedom. President Bush is also the author of Decision Points, a memoir of his time in office.

The songs of Andy Vaughan & The Driveline reach deep into the roots of country music. They have a sincere appreciation and deep reverence for traditional and classic country, honky tonk, outlaw, country rock, and western swing, and bring together all of these influences for a sound that is familiar, yet unique and refreshing. Since forming in 2010, the band has released two critically acclaimed albums of original music, Long Gone and Searching For The Song, and is currently recording a third. They play regularly in Virginia and North

Carolina, as well as tour stops in Nashville, Texas, Chicago, and New York. Their honest and genuine approach has given Andy Vaughan & The Driveline a well-deserved reputation for being the “real deal”. The band line up consists of Andy Vaughan (lead vocals, acoustic guitar), Slim Stanton (pedal steel guitar, accordion), Ray Fralin (lead guitar, fiddle), Erik Kutzler (bass guitar), and Chip Farnsworth (drums). Though they hail from right here in Richmond, Virginia, their set this evening will focus on the great sounds and songs of Texas, home state of President George W. Bush.

Presidential Libraries are not libraries in the usual sense. They are archives and museums, preserving the written record and physical history of our presidents, while providing special programs and exhibits that serve their communities. These libraries, described by President Reagan as “classrooms of Democracy,” belong to the American people. Beginning a tradition that continues to this day, President Franklin D. Roosevelt raised private funds and built a library, which he gave to the U.S. Government for operation through the National Archives. In 1955, this process became law when the U.S. Congress passed the Presidential Libraries Act. The George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum opened in 2013 and is located on the campus of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, set amidst a beautiful landscape of native Texas trees, grasses, and flowers in a 15-acre urban park. The Library and Museum provides an unmatched resource for the study of the life and career of the nation’s 43rd President, while also promoting a better understanding of the Presidency, American history, and public policy. The Library and Museum features a compelling permanent exhibition that uses artifacts, documents, audiovisual, and interactive components to capture the key decisions and events of the Presidency of George W. Bush. The 14,000-square-foot main gallery is framed

on four principles that are vitally important to President and Mrs. Bush: Freedom, Responsibility, Opportunity, and Compassion. The Museum employs immersive interactive features that tell the story of our nation and our work in an extraordinary time. The exhibition examines the September 11, 2001 attacks and the response of the President and the country in the aftermath. The Decision

Points Theater takes visitors inside the Presidential decision-making process through key events of the Bush Administration. A full-size reproduction of the Oval Office, the Texas Rose Garden, and the “Life in the White House” exhibits allow visitors to experience the public and private areas of the First Family’s home. In the Library’s archives, students and scholars have access to a vast collection of materials detailing a very consequential time in American history. Programs and educational initiatives engage the public and promote a better understanding of the United States government and shared history. Source: www.georgewbushlibrary.smu.edu

about the presidency (continued)

Roosevelt’s declaration that, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself;” and John F. Kennedy’s exhortation to “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.” In the midst of changes in the nation and in the Presidency, the American people have remained fascinated by the office and its occupant. Despite the higher or lower regard the Presidency may command at a particular point in time, there is a sense of celebrity and allure about this uniquely American institution that endure: the President’s family, favorite foods, pastimes, pets, books, style of entertaining, and choices of clothing. Tempered with the majesty inherent in the Presidency is the sobering realization that it truly is the toughest job in the world. Each person who is elected confronts this paradox on the day they take office. The

The Rt. Hon. Gordon Brown 2025: Shaping a New Future March 15, 2014 Since serving as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 2007 to 2010, Gordon Brown has focused his wealth of experience as a world leader on identifying the global forces that will shape our future. In his address to The Richmond Forum, Brown will look ahead to the year 2025 and chart the massive technological, demograpic, social, and political trends—including explosive growth of a global middle class—that will reinvent our world. He will also explore whether and how we can convert a new wave of scientific and medical progress into a more sustainable and widely shared prosperity which ends avoidable poverty.
