Perpetually young, but decades removed from the earnest, rusty-haired sheriff’s son who first skipped stones across a Mayberry pond in 1960, Ron Howard is an Academy Award-winning filmmaker and considered one of Hollywood’s elite directors, producers, writers, and stars. He has created some of the seminal works of his generation, while earning a lifetime reputation as one of the industry’s nicest guys. Born in 1954 in Oklahoma, Howard is the son of actors Rance and Jean Howard. At age five, he appeared in the television series Dennis the Menace and The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis before appearing in 224 episodes of The Andy Griffith Show as Opie, the role that would make him America’s favorite TV son. Meanwhile, he also played Winthrop in the film The Music Man and Eddie in the movie version of The Courtship of Eddie’s Father. For nearly three decades, Ron Howard was one of the most visible young actors on television, appearing in such iconic programs as The Twilight Zone, Gunsmoke, Bonanza, and M*A*S*H, capped off by his role as Richie Cunningham on the hit show Happy Days. His movie credits were equally noteworthy, including George Lucas’ American Graffiti and a leading role alongside James Stewart and Lauren Bacall in John Wayne’s last film, The Shootist, in 1976. At 15, he began directing silent movies with his father’s home-movie camera, casting his younger brother, Clint, and his future wife, actress Cheryl Alley. He directed his first feature film, Grand Theft Auto, in 1977. Since then, and as a partner in Imagine Films Entertainment, Howard has directed such award-winning box office hits as Splash, Cocoon, Parenthood, Backdraft, Apollo 13, A Beautiful
Mind, Cinderella Man, The Da Vinci Code, Frost/ Nixon, Rush, and In the Heart of the Sea. Howard won a Best Director Oscar for A Beautiful Mind, which was named Best Picture of 2001. He also earned Best Director and Best Picture nominations for Frost/Nixon. In 2003, Howard was awarded the National Medal of Arts from the National Endowment of the Arts for his contributions to cinema. Howard and his Imagine partner, Brian Grazer, were honored by the Wiesenthal Center with The Humanitarian Award in 2010. In 2013, Howard was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame. Recently, Howard directed Inferno, the third installment of Dan Brown’s Robert Langdon franchise, and Eight Days A WeekThe Touring Years, a documentary about The Beatles. He is also producing and directing the National Geographic Channel’s ten-part anthology entitled Genius, a series based on the life of Albert Einstein. Married to Cheryl since 1975, the couple has four children, including actresses Bryce Dallas Howard and Paige Carlyle Howard.

Ron Howard Trivia
In 1971, Ron Howard was a contestant on The Dating Game. He chose bachelorette No. 2. In 1961, he famously sang The Wells Fargo Wagon and Gary, Indiana in The Music Man, using an accentuated and loveable lisp. It’s the only movie in which Howard sings. Grand Theft Auto (1977) was Ron Howard’s first full length movie as director. It took only 15 days to shoot with a budget of $602,000 and grossed $15 million. He was 22 years old. It’s the only time he acted in a film he directed. Howard has directed eight different actors in Oscar-nominated performances: Don Ameche (Cocoon), Dianne Wiest (Parenthood), Ed Harris and Kathleen Quinlan (Apollo 13), Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind), Paul Giamatti (Cinderella Man), and Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon). Ameche and Connelly ultimately won the award. Howard and production collaborator Brian Grazer cemented their business relationship in 1986, when they formed Imagine Films Entertainment. The film and television production company promptly went public, initially selling 1.7 million shares at $8 per share, then quickly jumped to $19.25.
A Beautiful Mind and Apollo 13, both directed by Howard, are on the National Film Association’s list of “The 100 Most Inspiring Movies Of All Time.” His brother Clint Howard starred as Mark in the boy-meets-bear TV series Gentle Ben (19671969). Their father, Rance Howard, also had a regular role on the series as friend and neighbor Henry Boomhauer. Howard narrated the Fox comedy series, Arrested Development, for which he would also serve as executive producer and play a semifictionalized version of himself. Howard and wife Cheryl Howard, also an actress, have been married for 42 years. They were high school sweethearts. He has directed his wife Cheryl in 11 films, his father Rance Howard in 15, and his younger brother Clint in 16. Happy Days costar Henry “Fonzie” Winkler is godfather to Ron Howard’s daughter Bryce Dallas Howard, an actress whose movies include Spider-Man 3, Terminator Salvation, Pete’s Dragon and Jurassic World.

The National Geographic’s Global Event TV Series entitled Genius premieres on the Nat Geo Channel this week (April 25th). From Executive Producers Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, the initial season of the network’s first scripted anthology series will focus on Nobel Prizewinning physicist Albert Einstein. Based on Walter Isaacson’s critically acclaimed book, Einstein: His Life and Universe, and adapted by writer Noah Pink, the ten episodes of Genius follow the brilliant scientist through the triumphs and challenges of his life, from failing to get his doctorate to developing the general theory of relativity. “This is about getting underneath how
“genius”
“Genius”
genius works,” Howard, who also directs the first episode, says. “It’s a case study of a complex character. We’ve found that audiences are smarter and far more fascinated by detailed and thoughtful elements in stories than we ever realized early on, and this is what we’re applying to the life of Albert Einstein.” The all-star cast includes Academy Award-winning actor Geoffrey Rush as the elder Einstein, Johnny Flynn as Einstein in his youth, and Emily Watson as the genius’ second wife, and first cousin, Elsa.
Making a difference. Together. Our unique backgrounds, life experiences and passions make us individuals. But when we work together as a diverse group of creative thinkers and doers, we make real-world impact. WestRock is proud to sponsor the 2016-2017 season of The Richmond Forum.

Freedom
we get the most
is how we get the most out of life.
A synapsis fires within the brain. Electricity is sent rushing through our bodies, freeing us to think, feel and move. But when the nervous system is interrupted by movement disorders like Parkinson’s, nerve damage or brain trauma, our lives no longer belong to us. It takes neuroscience medicine and research at VCU Health to look beyond today and find the answers that will free us to be ourselves once again.
Making life better, by design.
