Altria’s companies have a strong American heritage stretching back more than 180 years. Our companies include some of the most enduring names in American business: Philip Morris USA, the maker of Marlboro cigarettes, and U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company, the maker of Copenhagen and Skoal moist smokeless tobacco. We also own John Middleton, manufacturer of Black & Mild cigars, as well as Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, a leading producer and importer of premium wines, and Nu Mark, an innovation company which makes e-vapor products like MarkTen®. Our companies are strengthening the communities where we live and work. This includes focusing on our employees, retailers across the U.S., the farmers who work the fields, and nonprofits to help our communities thrive. We’re also working to enhance economic growth by providing thousands of good-paying jobs. We support approaches to address tough industry issues, like reducing the health effects of tobacco products and reducing underage tobacco use. Our companies talk with stakeholders to get their input on these key

issues. These engagements help us understand society’s expectations and develop responsible business practices. Community nonprofits are important stakeholders. Today, our companies focus their giving in education and youth development, arts and culture, and the environment. By investing in these areas, Altria’s companies are working to find long-lasting solutions to the challenges facing our communities. In 2015, we donated $54.7 million nationally, and our employees contributed over 47,000 hours of community service through volunteer activities. More than 60 executives served on over 100 non-profit boards. Altria’s companies’ support for the visual and performing arts goes back more than 50 years. Today, we continue to champion arts and culture organizations that reflect the qualities we value in our businesses—creativity, diversity, excellence and innovation. Our support for arts and cultural initiatives in Richmond, Va., and Washington D.C., focuses on programs that bring world-class cultural experiences to our communities and increase access to the arts. Presidential historian, Pulitzer Prize-winner, and contributing editor at TIME, Jon Meacham is one of America’s most prominent public intellectuals. A regular guest on Morning Joe, he is known as a skilled raconteur with a depth of knowledge about politics, religion, and current affairs that allows him to keenly analyze how issues and events impact our lives. Likewise, as an historian, his research has a signature depth, enabling him to understand and articulate the unique circumstances of his subjects, while also capturing the heart and humanity of historical leaders within the political reality of their time. His latest Presidential biography, Destiny and Power: The American Odyssey of George Herbert Walker Bush, debuted at #1 on the New York Times Best Sellers list in November 2015. The Times review said his work “reflects the qualities of both subject and biographer: judicious, balanced, deliberative, with a deep appreciation of history and the personalities who shape it.” Meacham’s #1 New York Times bestseller, Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power, was hailed as “masterful and intimate” by Fortune magazine. His other national bestsellers include Franklin and Winston, American Gospel, and American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 2009. Born in Chattanooga in 1969, Meacham graduated from The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, with a degree summa cum laude in English Literature; he was salutatorian and elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He began his career at The Chattanooga Times and later worked as an editor at The Washington Monthly. From 1998 to 2006, he served as the managing editor of Newsweek and as the magazine’s editor from 2006 to 2010. The

New York Times called him “one of the most influential editors in the news magazine business.” Now a contributing editor at TIME, he writes for its Ideas section. Meacham is also Executive Vice President and Executive Editor at the Random House Publishing Group. He has appeared on Meet The Press, The Colbert Report, and Ken Burns’ documentary series The Roosevelts: An Intimate History. Fox News produced an hour-long special about Meacham’s Destiny and Power in November 2015. Named a “Global Leader for Tomorrow” by the World Economic Forum, he is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a fellow of the Society of American Historians, and chairs the National Advisory Board of the John C. Danforth Center on Religion and Politics at Washington University. Meacham is a Distinguished Visiting Professor of History at The University of the South and a Visiting Distinguished Professor at Vanderbilt. Meacham first appeared at The Richmond Forum in 2009 with religious scholar Reza Aslan in a program centered on the role of religion in politics.

One of The Richmond Forum’s most requested and admired speakers, Doris Kearns Goodwin returns tonight for her fourth appearance on our stage, more than any other presenter. A world-renowned presidential historian and a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Goodwin is the author of six critically acclaimed and New York Times bestselling books, including her most recent, The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism. Winner of the Carnegie Medal, The Bully Pulpit is a dynamic history of the first decade of the Progressive Era, a tumultuous time when the nation was coming unseamed and reform was in the air. Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks Studios has acquired the film rights to the book. Spielberg and Goodwin previously worked together on Lincoln, based in part on Goodwin’s award-winning book, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, an epic work that illuminates Lincoln’s political genius as a one-term congressman and prairie lawyer who rose from obscurity to prevail over three gifted rivals to become president. The Spielberg-directed movie based on that work, Lincoln, earned 12 Academy Award nominations. Goodwin was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for History for her 1995 work, No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The Home Front in World War II, and is the author of the bestsellers, Wait Till Next Year, Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream, and The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys, which was adapted into an award-winning five-part TV miniseries. Ms. Goodwin is well known for her appearances and commentary on television, where she is seen frequently on NBC, MSNBC,

CBS, ABC, FOX, CNN, The Charlie Rose Show, and Meet the Press. She has served as a consultant and been interviewed extensively for PBS and the History Channel documentaries on President Lyndon B. Johnson, the Kennedy family, Franklin Roosevelt, Abraham and Mary Lincoln, as well as Ken Burns’ The History of Baseball and The Roosevelts: An Intimate History. Goodwin graduated magna cum laude from Colby College and was a Woodrow Wilson fellow. She earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Government from Harvard University, where she taught Government, including a course on the American Presidency. Goodwin served as an assistant to President Lyndon Johnson in his last year in the White House and later assisted him in the preparation of his memoirs. Among her many honors and awards, Goodwin was awarded the Charles Frankel Prize, given by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Sarah Josepha Hale Medal, the New England Book Award, and, most recently, the Carl Sandburg Literary Award. Ms. Goodwin is currently writing a book on presidential leadership.

Known for probing questions to everyone from presidents to warlords to musicians, Steve Inskeep’s palpable passion for telling stories has made him one of America’s leading journalists. As host of NPR’s Morning Edition, the most widely heard radio news program in the U.S., Inskeep breaks down fast-moving events to make news stories accessible to listeners. He has delivered on-the-ground insight from all over the world, from New Orleans to Tehran, having investigated Iraqi police in Baghdad, traveled 2,700 miles across North Africa in the wake of the Arab Spring, and reported from war-torn Syria. In 2014, he drove 2,428 miles along the entire U.S.-Mexico border; his reporting resulted in the radio series Borderland. Inskeep has earned numerous honors

for his investigative journalism, including an Edward R. Murrow Award, a Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, and an Alfred I. duPont–Columbia University Award. Inskeep is the author of Instant City: Life and Death in Karachi. His newest book, Jacksonland, chronicles the history of President Andrew Jackson’s long-running conflict with John Ross. In 1991, The Butterbean Jazz Quartet was formed by Zip Irvin, John Winn, and Jim Dudley. They began a weekly Sunday evening gig at Bottoms Up Pizza; that gig has become a mainstay in Richmond’s historic Shockoe Bottom. Over the years, members of the quartet have changed. Tonight’s lineup is John Conley (piano and guitar), Terri Simpson (vocals), Rusty Farmer (acoustic bass), and Keith Willingham (drums). The Butterbean Jazz Quartet specializes in traditional jazz vocal standards as well as more

contemporary pop hits of the last 20 years. All members have contributed musical arrangements that have helped the group develop a unique and intimate sound. The quartet members met during their undergraduate studies at VCU. Since then, they’ve performed extensively throughout Virginia, including a recent performance for the Richmond Jazz Society’s Guest Educators Series. In 2008, Terri Simpson received Richmond Magazine’s prestigious Theresa Pollak Prize for Excellence in the Arts. In 2009, the quartet released their debut album through Courthouse Records; the album can be found at cdbaby.com.

inaugural firsts

Inaugural Firsts George Washington (1789-1797) On April 30, 1789, George Washington took the oath as the first President of the United States. The oath was administered by Robert R. Livingston, the Chancellor of New York, on a second-floor balcony of Federal Hall, above a crowd assembled in the streets to witness this historic event. At his second inauguration, in Philadelphia, he delivered what remains the shortest inaugural address at just 135 words. John Adams (1797-1801) John Adams became the first President to receive the oath of office from a Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court (Richmond’s John Marshall). Thomas Jefferson (1801-1809) Thomas Jefferson became the first President to be inaugurated in Washington, DC. The Marine Band played at the inauguration for the first time and has played at every inauguration since. Thomas Jefferson’s second inauguration hosted the first inaugural parade. James Madison (1809-1817) James and Dolly Madison attended the first

inaugural ball held on the same day as the inauguration. Tickets were $4 each. James Monroe (1817-1825) James Monroe was the first President to take the oath of office and deliver the inaugural address outdoors. His second inauguration was to fall on a Sunday. After consulting with Supreme Court justices, Monroe decided to hold the inaugural ceremony on Monday. This tradition has continued whenever Inauguration Day falls on a Sunday.

Andrew Jackson (1829-1837) Andrew Jackson was the first President to take the oath of office on the east front portico of the U.S. Capitol, facing the Library of Congress and Supreme Court.

Let’s talk.

James K. Polk (1845-1849) His was the first inauguration covered by telegraph. Franklin Pierce (1853-1857) On religious grounds, former Senator and Congressman Franklin Pierce chose to “affirm” rather than to “swear” the executive oath of office. He was the only President to use the choice offered by the Constitution. James Buchanan (1857-1861) His was the first inauguration known to have been photographed. (Below)

Abraham Lincoln (1861-1865) Lincoln’s procession to the Capitol was surrounded by heavily armed cavalry and infantry, providing an unprecedented amount of protection for the President-elect as the nation stood on the brink of war. African Americans participated in Lincoln’s second inaugural parade for the first time. James A. Garfield (1881) He was the first President to review the inaugural parade from a stand built in front of the White House. William McKinley (1897-1901) McKinley’s inaugural ceremony was the first to be recorded by a motion picture camera. Theodore Roosevelt (1901-1909) Telephone lines were installed at the U.S. Capitol for his second inauguration.

inaugural firsts (cont ’d)

William H. Harrison (1841) Without a hat, coat, or gloves, and in the midst of a snowstorm, William Henry Harrison delivered the longest inaugural address ever at 10,000 words long. He died one month later from pneumonia.

Herbert C. Hoover (1929-1933) His was the first inaugural ceremony recorded by talking newsreel.

Gerald R. Ford (1974-1977) Upon the resignation of Spiro Agnew as Vice President, Gerald Ford became the first unelected Vice President who then became President after the resignation of Richard M. Nixon.

Franklin D. Roosevelt (1933-1945) The 20th Amendment to the Constitution changed Roosevelt’s second inauguration from March 4th to January 20th. His third inauguration was the first and last time a President was inaugurated for a third term. (The 22nd Amendment limited Presidential terms to two.) Roosevelt was sworn in for a fourth term with a simple ceremony at the White House. At the height of World War II, there was no formal celebration following the event.

Ronald W. Reagan (1981-1989) Ronald Reagan became the first President inaugurated on the West Terrace of the U.S. Capitol, facing the National Mall. The two inaugurations of Ronald Reagan had the distinction of being the warmest (55°F) and coldest (7°F) Inauguration Days.

Harry S. Truman (1945-1953) Truman took the oath of office just two hours after receiving word of President Roosevelt’s death from a cerebral hemorrhage. Truman’s 1949 inauguration was the first to be televised.

Barack H. Obama (2009-2017) Barack Obama’s first inauguration had the largest attendance of any presidential inauguration in U.S. history, and the highest viewership ever of the swearing-in.

William J. Clinton (1993-2001) His was the first inaugural ceremony broadcast live on the Internet.

inaugural firsts (cont ’d)

Lyndon Baines Johnson (1963-1969) Following the assassination of President Kennedy, Johnson was the first and only president to take the oath of office on an airplane. Johnson’s 1965 inauguration was the first time a President rode in a bullet-proof limousine.

Our 2016–2017 Richmond Forum Scholars Engaging students from the region’s public and independent schools in our programs has always been an important aspect of fulfilling the mission of The Richmond Forum. This season, 40 students are participating in our page program, seating patrons and collecting questions during intermission. Another 500 students will attend our sold-out programs in our Student Room, where they will also have the unique opportunity to interact directly with our speakers, and 550 students will hear a keynote from former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei when the Governor’s School Model United Nations convenes in March. In another very successful student program, now in its fourth season, five of the region’s highest achieving and most impressive high school juniors have been selected to serve as Richmond Forum Scholars. Students from around the region submitted applications, essays, and letters of recommendation, hoping to be selected for this honor. All of the applicants were remarkable in their academic standing and

impressive extra-curricular activities. Twenty students were chosen for interviews, and five outstanding students were ultimately selected as our 2016–2017 Richmond Forum Scholars. They are: I ram Amir – The Steward School Morgan Canaan – Douglas S. Freeman HS Pablo Gómez García – James River HS Julia Gibson – Douglas S. Freeman HS Fuller Wise – St. Christopher’s School Beginning at the November program, the Scholars worked closely with Forum staff to ensure a well-run program by serving in important roles behind the scenes, including checking in guests at our sponsor receptions, escorting speakers throughout the evening, introducing speakers in our Student Room, acting as runners backstage, and helping our photo lines run efficiently. Congratulations to the new Richmond Forum Scholars. We’re happy to have you on our team this season!

There’s a beauty to the rhythm of this thing called life. It’s the music within you, the 4/4 beat that keeps you moving. And when that rhythm is interrupted, it’s our leadership at the VCU Health Pauley Heart Center that creates the path to healing and recovery. If we show people how to take care of their hearts through proper diet and exercise, then their hearts will take care of them. This is how we see the future of heart care, with prevention being our specialty.

Krista Tippett Becoming Wise February 18, 2017 Peabody Award-winning broadcaster and 2013 National Humanities Medal recipient Krista Tippett has interviewed the most extraordinary voices of our time for her public radio program and podcast, On Being, thoughtfully delving into the mysteries of human existence. On air and in print, Tippett avoids easy answers, embracing complexity and inviting people of every background to join her conversation about faith, ethics, and moral wisdom—from scientists to theologians to poets and activists. At The Richmond Forum, Tippett will distill the insights gleaned from these conversations about what it means to be human and spiritual.
