In 2003, Dave Isay placed a single microphone in a soundproof “StoryBooth” in Grand Central Station and invited everyday people to record an interview about their lives. This was the humble beginning of StoryCorps and its bold mission to “preserve and share humanity’s stories in order to build connections between people and create a more just and compassionate world.” Since then, over half-a-million people have sat down with someone closest to them—a spouse, a parent, a child, a longtime coworker— to have and record an intimate and revealing conversation. Beyond the impact of these conversations on their participants, all StoryCorps recordings are archived in the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress—the largest single collection of human voices ever gathered. Millions of listeners also experience these stories each Friday on NPR’s Morning Edition and weekly on the StoryCorps podcast. As a longtime radio producer, in 1993, Isay founded his own nonprofit radio company, Sound Portraits Productions, for the purpose of telling the stories of marginalized people who were not often heard over the airwaves. Its award-winning work resulted in Isay earning a “Genius” fellowship in 2000, and spurred the creation of StoryCorps. Isay has earned six Peabody Awards for his work as an independent producer and for his Sound Portraits and StoryCorps projects, including: American Folklife Radio Project (1992), Remorse: The 14 Stories of Eric Morse (1996), Witness to an Execution (2000), the Yiddish Radio Project (2002), for the collective work of StoryCorps (2006), and the StoryCorps 9/11 project (2011).
Isay was awarded the $1 million TED Prize in 2015, which was used to launch the StoryCorps app, an “all-new tool for collecting the wisdom of humanity.” In 2018, Isay and StoryCorps announced their “One Small Step” initiative. The initiative brings together people with different political views, of all backgrounds and beliefs, to record a StoryCorps interview with each other in order to remind us that we have more in common than divides us. Isay is also the bestselling author/editor of numerous essays and books, including five that grew out of his public radio documentary work with StoryCorps: Listening is an Act of Love (2007), Mom: A Celebration of Mothers from StoryCorps (2012), All There Is: Love Stories from StoryCorps (2012), Ties That Bind: Stories of Love and Gratitude from the First Ten Years of StoryCorps (2013), and Callings: The Purpose and Passion of Work (2016). Isay holds a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and chemistry from New York University. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife, Jennifer Gonnerman.

Catherine Burns is the longtime artistic director of The Moth, an award-winning nonprofit organization dedicated to presenting live storytelling. Founded by novelist George Dawes Green, The Moth’s mission is “to promote the art and craft of storytelling and to honor and celebrate the diversity and commonality of human experience.” Green wanted to recreate the feeling of summer evenings in his native Georgia, when moths were attracted to the light over the porch as he and his friends gathered to tell stories. Since 1997, The Moth has presented more than 30,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds around the world. Renowned for the range of human experience they showcase, Moth shows begin with a theme that each storyteller explores, often in unexpected ways. Storytellers come from all walks of life, and develop and shape their stories with the assistance of Moth directors. Burns attended her first Moth back in 2000, fell in love with the show, and was in turn a GrandSLAM contestant and volunteer in the Moth Community Program before joining the staff full time. As a director on the Moth mainstage since 2003, Burns has helped hundreds of people craft their stories, including a retired New York City detective, a jaguar tracker, and an exonerated prisoner. She explains the process in the introduction to Occasional Magic: “We help people identify the most important moments of their lives (as we sometimes put it, ‘the moments when you became you’) so the audience will understand why they mattered so much.” The resulting original, intimate, and revealing shows delight live audiences and
millions of listeners to the Peabody Awardwinning Moth Radio Hour, heard on 500 stations worldwide, and The Moth Podcast, frequently included on lists of top podcasts. Burns co-produces and frequently hosts The Moth Radio Hour, and is the editor of three bestselling Moth anthologies: 50 True Stories (2013), All These Wonders (2017), and Occasional Magic (2019). Beyond its mainstage shows, The Moth also produces community and education programs to promote open-mic storytelling and narrative workshops and to develop and elevate stories around the world. Before joining The Moth, Catherine Burns directed and produced television and independent films, interviewing such diverse talent as Ozzy Osbourne, Martha Stewart, and Howard Stern. Burns has also directed two solo shows featuring Moth storytellers: The Gates, with Adam Gopnik, and Helen & Edgar, with Edgar Oliver. Born and raised in Alabama, Burns lives in Brooklyn with her husband and young son.

Brandon Stanton founded Humans of New York in 2010. From an initial goal of creating a photographic catalog of everyday people on the streets of his city, the project expanded to include Stanton’s conversations with his subjects. Taken together, these portraits and captions have become a global phenomenon. Stanton first took up photography in 2010 while working as a bond trader in Chicago. He spent his weekends photographing cityscapes and people on the street. Later that year, he was laid off and moved to New York City. Humans of New York (HONY) began as Stanton’s idea to use his hobby to chronicle the lives of five or six interesting people each day. He planned to collect 10,000 portraits of strangers throughout New York and chart them on an interactive map of the city. The photo project quickly evolved after he first added a caption to one of the pictures he posted online. It featured a woman with green hair dressed in all green, accompanied by what she told Stanton: “I used to go through different stages. But then I found that I was happiest when I was green, so I’ve been green for 15 years.” That post became one of his most popular, and shifted Stanton’s focus from the portraits themselves to telling the stories of his subjects. Today, Humans of New York has over 28 million followers across its social media platforms, who are drawn to the humanity, power, and simplicity of its storytelling. Stanton was named one of TIME’s “30 Under 30: World Changers” in 2013 for his work capturing these “capsules of a moment in time.” Inspired by his HONY subjects and community, Stanton has used his reach and influence to crowdfund millions of dollars
for charitable causes, including $4 million for childhood cancer research and over $1.2 million to help send impoverished students to college. The latter campaign went viral and sent Stanton and a group of Brooklyn students to the Oval Office to meet—and photograph—President Barack Obama. In 2014, Stanton partnered with the United Nations for a 50-day trip to ten countries— including Iraq, Jordan, South Sudan, and Ukraine—to raise awareness about the U.N.’s efforts to improve living conditions around the world. His 2015 return trip to the Middle East prompted a crowdfunding campaign that raised $2.3 million to help end bonded labor in Pakistan. In 2018, Stanton raised over $2.1 million to help house Rohingya refugees living in Bangladesh. Stanton has published two bestselling collections of portraits, Humans of New York (2013) and Humans of New York: Stories (2015)—with a third book of international portraits planned for release in fall 2020. When not traveling the world, he resides in New York City with his wife.

Fostering Conversations Across Political Divides Over the last 15 years, StoryCorps has perfected a method for helping people feel more connected and for reminding us of the inherent worth of every person and every story. Using StoryCorps tools and questions, people come together to have otherwise impossible conversations. The microphone gives them license to talk about things they otherwise might not discuss. Now, StoryCorps’ “One Small Step” initiative is asking people with different political views to record an interview with each other. Why? To break down boundaries created by politics and remember our shared humanity. To remind us that we have more in common than divides us and that listening and treating those with whom we disagree with decency and respect is essential to a functioning democracy. How does it work? Anyone with a smartphone can record an interview with the StoryCorps App, which is available on iOS, Android devices, and for Kindle. Questions are built into the app to guide a conversation with someone in your life you may want to get to know better, including: Describe an experience that shaped your politics. How did your childhood shape your view of the world today? Can you talk about a time you experienced doubt over your beliefs? Is there someone with whom you disagree but still respect? When you think about the future, what are you most scared of? Source: www.storycorps.org StoryCorps’ mission is to preserve and share humanity’s stories in order to build connections between people and create a more just and compassionate world.

“What concerns me most as a military man is not our external adversaries; it is our internal divisiveness. We are dividing into hostile tribes cheering against each other, fueled by emotion and a mutual disdain that jeopardizes our future, instead of rediscovering our common ground and finding solutions.” – General James Mattis, U.S. Army, Ret.
He won’t forget his family when he deploys. And neither will we. Veterans who work at Dominion Energy are in good company: 1 in 5 new hires has served in the military. And should they be deployed while on the job, we’ll proudly continue their family’s benefits for up to five years and cover the difference between their current salary and military pay. Because family watches out for family, and they’ll always be a part of ours.
Tips for Moth Storytellers Every year, in cities across the world, thousands of people from every walk of life step onto the Moth stage to share their stories—live and without notes. Following is some of the guidance provided to these brave souls. WHAT TO DO
WHAT NOT TO DO
Moth stories are told, not read. We love how the storyteller connects with the audience when there is no PAGE between them! Please know your story “by heart” but not by rote memorization. No notes, paper or cheat sheets allowed on stage.
Steer clear of meandering endings. They kill a story! Your last line should be clear in your head before you start. Yes, bring the audience along with you as you contemplate what transpires in your story, but remember, you are driving the story, and must know the final destination. Keep your hands on the wheel!
Have some stakes. Stakes are essential in live storytelling. What do you stand to gain or lose? Why is what happens in the story important to you? If you can’t answer this, then think of a different story. A story without stakes is an essay and is best experienced on the page, not the stage. Start in the action. Have a great first line that sets up the stakes and grabs attention. Know your story well enough so you can have fun! Watching you panic to think of the next memorized line is harrowing for the audience. Make an outline, memorize your bullet points and play with the details. Enjoy yourself. Imagine you are at a dinner party, not a deposition.
No standup routines please. The Moth loves funny people but requires that all funny people tell funny stories. No rants. Take up this anger issue with your therapist, or skip therapy and shape your anger into a story with some sort of resolution. (Stories = therapy!) No essays. Your eloquent musings are beautiful and look pretty on the page but unless you can make them gripping and set up stakes, they won’t work on stage. No fake accents. If your story doesn’t work in your own voice, or that of your people of origin, please consider another story. In our experience, imitating accents from another culture or race rarely works and often offends. Source: www.themoth.org “The joke is that telling a story on the main stage of The Moth is like ten years of therapy.” – Catherine Burns

Humans of New York
Talking to Str angers By Brandon Stanton, Humans of New York Probably the most eye-opening revelation that I’ve had from eight years of doing Humans of New York is this: You can talk to a stranger about almost anything. How do I get people to open up? The simplest answer is this: ‘I just ask.’ At the beginning of every interview, I give this disclaimer: ‘These questions will be hard. Anything you don’t want to answer, you don’t have to. And anything you don’t want to be published, I won’t share.’ The person is also given the option to be anonymous, which is why there are so many photos of hands and feet. Even after the post has been published, I’ll immediately remove it upon request. For any reason. (Which is why occasionally a post will disappear.) So everyone is given numerous chances not to share. But so many people choose to share anyway. Within minutes of sitting down for an interview, I am usually talking to the person about quite personal things. People very rarely choose to ‘pass’ on a question. Honestly, I think it just feels good to be heard. Especially in the age of social media, people don’t listen to each other much anymore. So when someone is intensely focused on your story—even if that person is a stranger-- it can be an empowering and cathartic experience. I don’t have a list of set questions. I have a handful of starter questions. Usually I will begin with either: ‘What is your greatest
struggle right now?’ or ‘How has your life turned out differently than you expected?’ But these questions are only meant to start a conversation. Once the conversation has begun, my only job is to listen. I’ll ask one hundred more questions, but each of those questions is based on something I’m being told. They’re specific and unique to each interview. I just follow my curiosity. I’m never more present than when I’m conducting an interview. I try to disappear. I try not to insert my opinions or counter with my own experience. My goal is to help that person articulate their experience and worldview as eloquently as possible. And my questions are aimed at getting the information and details that will help them do that. The interviews often go for over an hour. They can get quite emotional. The stories are most powerful when we cover new ground. I want my questions to help the person gain a new perspective or encourage them to think about things for the very first time. When we begin to cover new ground, you can feel it. Things get very quiet and slow. There are long pauses. And it’s a healthy place to be. Both of us are growing from the experience. Both of us are learning new things, and hopefully that discovery can be passed on to the audience. At the end of a successful Humans of New York interview, both the subject and I are extremely grateful to each other.

“Who’s influenced you the most in your life?” “My principal, Ms. Lopez.” “How has she influenced you?” “When we get in trouble, she doesn’t suspend us. She calls us to her office and explains to us how society was built down around us. And she tells us that each time somebody fails out of school, a new jail cell gets built. And one time she made every student stand up, one at a time, and she told each one of us that we matter.”

Richmond Stories
Secretly Y’all is a Richmond-based organization that broadcasts peoples’ true stories to inspire, to create, and to invest in community. Secretly Y’all embodies the belief that the power of a story is more than the sum of its words. Since 2010, Secretly Y’all has organized and presented regular live storytelling events— providing a microphone and a safe space for those who have a true story that wants to be shared, as well as a welcoming space for those who come to listen. Each regular event partners with and promotes a local charity, raising both awareness and donations. Over the past nine years Secretly Y’all has curated and recorded over 65 live storytelling events, archiving more than 600 stories, while raising and channeling over $16,000 directly back into our local community, emphasizing that all of our stories can have broad and significant impact. Every live event has a unique theme and anyone is welcome to submit a story proposal inspired by that theme. The Setlist is the first part of the evening, which is comprised of people who have submitted and been selected to share their story. The story must be true,
told without notes, and under seven minutes in length. For the second part of the evening, everyone has the opportunity to throw their name in “The Hat” and a few more people are randomly selected to share their stories on the same theme. The next Secretly Y’all event is February 10th and the theme is “Twisted Love.” Learn more at www.secretlyall.org.

Our 2019-2020 Richmond Forum Scholars Engaging students from the region’s public and independent schools in our programs has always been an important aspect of fulfilling the mission of The Richmond Forum. This season, 50 students are participating in our page program, seating patrons and collecting questions during intermission. Another 500 students will attend our sold-out programs in our Student Room, where they will have the unique opportunity to interact directly with our speakers, and, thanks to a grant from the Ralph Krueger Memorial Fund, 550 student delegates from around the region will hear a keynote from Middle East policy analyst Karim Sadjadpour when the Governor’s School Model United Nations convenes in March. In another successful program, now in its seventh year, five of the region’s highest achieving and most impressive high school juniors have been selected to serve as Richmond Forum Scholars. Students from schools around the region submitted applications, video essays, and letters of recommendation, hoping to be
selected for this honor. All of the applicants were remarkable in their academic standing and impressive extra-curricular activities. After a week of in-person interviews, five outstanding students were ultimately selected as our 2019– 2020 Richmond Forum Scholars: Amal Ali – Mills E. Godwin High School Ryan Henry – J.R. Tucker High School Quin Smith – Patrick Henry High School Drew Thompson – The Steward School Andrew Van De Putte – Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School Scholars work with Forum staff to ensure a well-run program by serving in important behind-the-scenes roles, including checking in guests at our sponsor receptions, escorting speakers throughout the evening, introducing them in our Student Room, and acting as runners backstage. Congratulations to this season’s Richmond Forum Scholars!

From Patrick Henry’s historic and game-changing speech to America’s largest and most respected non-profit public forum, Richmonders have long understood that the ability to speak with power and confidence and civilly articulate and debate ideas and points of view is critical to a functioning democracy and a successful life. In that local tradition, we believe our region’s students should have access to strong speech and debate programs in our public schools. These programs teach research, critical thinking, construction of logical arguments, assessment of audience, self esteem, poise and presentation, and engagement in world events—skills which build better students, better college candidates, better employees, and better citizens.
Launched in 2018 by The Richmond Forum, the Richmond Region Speech & Debate Initiative provides funding for tournament entry fees and travel, training for coaches, debate camp scholarships for students, and much more. So far this school year, grants have been awarded to 20 high schools in Richmond, Henrico, Chesterfield, and Hanover. The goal of the Initiative is for every public middle and high school in the region to have competitive speech and debate programs by 2025—the 250th anniversary of Patrick Henry’s game-changing speech delivered here in Richmond. Together, we believe we can achieve this goal. THANK YOU TO OUR SUBSCRIBERS, INITIATIVE SPONSORS, AND PARTNERS
Virginia Association of Forensics, Theater & Debate Coaches
WHAT TEACHERS ARE SAYING… Despite years of involvement with Forensics, as an adult and competitor, it wasn’t until our partnership with The Richmond Forum that I felt as though I was connected to the Speech and Debate world outside of Chesterfield County. Thanks to The Forum, my students have been able to twice travel to the George Mason Patriot Games (and succeed!), and I was able to attend the NSDA Coaches Conference this summer. My students’ experience is so much richer with The Richmond Forum in our corner. – Jessica Sanchez, James River High School I am thrilled and elated to serve as the coach of Armstrong High School’s new Speech and Debate team. My hope is that I can excite my students about the art of public speaking and competition the way my high school coach did for me. She was the catalyst for my discovering the true power of words and their ability to change hearts, minds, perspectives—but most importantly, their ability to change the world. My students deserve to know that power. That is the pleasure of my mission! Thanks to the Richmond Region Speech and Debate Initiative and the support they are providing, the mission has become possible! – LaTonia Dean Thomas, Armstrong High School The Richmond Forum’s support is more than a matter of money. While the grant certainly provides our new team with a degree of immediate capacity and flexibility we would not have otherwise, my students and I have already benefited not only from the Forum’s generosity, but also from their trust. It means everything to have the endorsement of an organization of such stature, one widely respected and even admired in our community. It is our sincere hope and expectation that our team’s growth and development will justify the Richmond Forum’s financial and moral investment in us. – Vincent Simone, Richmond Community High School

Within city limits. Without any limits. Virginia Commonwealth University is part of the state’s capital. Our students walk out of class and into the city. And by increasing financial aid funding 45% since 2011, more of them can experience everything our urban environment has to offer. For students, it’s a unique opportunity to start a business, begin a career or have some fun. It’s their chance to write their story.
