society’s expectations and develop responsible business practices. Community nonprofits are important stakeholders. Today, our companies focus their giving in education and youth development, arts and culture, and the environment. By investing in these areas, Altria’s companies are working to find long-lasting solutions to the challenges facing our communities. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Russell Carrington Wilson is the second of three children born into a high-achieving and athletic family. His grandfather, a former president of Norfolk State University, was a two-sport star at Kentucky State, and his father, Harrison Wilson III, was a standout football and baseball player for Dartmouth. Harrison was drafted into the NFL but chose to pursue a law career, graduating from the University of Virginia where he was president of his law class. Russell’s mother, Tammy, is a legal nurse consultant, and his sister, Anna, will be attending Stanford next year on a basketball scholarship. In 2004, Russell Wilson earned the starting quarterback job at Collegiate School in Richmond, where he lead the Cougars to a record three consecutive state championships, while also starting on the school’s baseball and basketball teams. In 2007, he was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles to play baseball, but decided to accept a football scholarship to NC State. As a red-shirt junior for the Wolfpack, Wilson led the ACC in passing yards and total offense. He graduated from NC State in three
years with a B.A. in Communication and, having one year of NCAA eligibility remaining, opted to transfer to the University of Wisconsin for graduate studies and his final year of play. Wilson broke numerous passing records during his 2011 season at Wisconsin and led the Badgers to the Big Ten Championship game. During his college summers, Wilson also played professional baseball for minor league teams in the Colorado Rockies organization. Although relatively small for an NFL quarterback, he was selected by the Seattle Seahawks with the 75th pick in the 2012 draft and immediately became their starter. After shattering NFL rookie records for completions and passer ratings,Wilson was named Rookie of the Year in 2013. The following year, he led the Seahawks to their first Super Bowl victory, defeating the Denver Broncos. He took the team to a second consecutive Super Bowl in 2015, where they lost to the New England Patriots on the final play of the game. In 2016, Wilson was named the Pro Bowl Offensive MVP. By consistently inspiring his teammates to heroic comebacks through gritty resolve and leadership, Wilson is universally considered one of the NFL’s most gifted and inspirational players. A devout Christian, Wilson is heavily involved in charitable activities for the Seattle Children’s Hospital. In the off-season, he hosts the Russell Wilson Passing Academy. Held in several cities, these youth football camps teach the skills of the game while encouraging kids to develop high character and moral standards, a sense of competitiveness and fair play, respect for authority, service to others, and love of God, family, and country. Wilson also founded the Why Not You Foundation to “empower change in the world.”

Dr. Gates is editor in chief of the Oxford African American Studies Center, the first comprehensive scholarly online resource in the field of African American and Africana Studies. In 2013, his six-part PBS documentary series, The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross, which he wrote, executive-produced, and hosted, earned the Emmy Award for Outstanding Historical Program – Long Form, as well as a Peabody Award and the NAACP Image Award. Having written for such leading publications as The New Yorker, The New York Times, and TIME, Gates now serves as editor in chief of TheRoot.com, a daily online magazine. In 2012, The Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Reader, a collection of his writings, was published. Professor Gates’ latest book is Finding Your Roots: The Official Companion to the PBS Series. In 2006, Dr. Gates wrote and produced the PBS documentary African American Lives, the first documentary series to employ genealogy and science to provide an understanding of African American history. Gates also wrote and produced the documentaries Wonders of the African World
and America Beyond the Color Line for PBS and the BBC; he authored the companion books for both series. He has received 54 honorary degrees from institutions including the University of Pennsylvania, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, and Howard University. He was a member of the first class awarded “genius grants” by the MacArthur Foundation in 1981, and in 1998, he became the first African American scholar to be awarded the National Humanities Medal. Gates, known to his friends as “Skip,” was born in 1950 in Keyser, West Virginia. He graduated with a degree in history from Yale University and earned his Ph.D. in English Literature from Cambridge University. In 2006, Dr. Gates was inducted into the Sons of the American Revolution after he traced his lineage back to John Redman, a free Negro who fought in the Revolutionary War. Dr. Gates is widely acknowledged for advancing African American studies onto a scholarly plane that is equivalent with all other academic disciplines.

Only painstaking genealogical and genetic research could reveal that liberal comedian and television host Bill Maher and right-wing conservative firebrand Bill O’Reilly are actually related through common ancestors in the O’Neill dynasty of Ireland. Which means they are both related to tonight’s Forum guest, Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr., who also has an ancestor in that family tree, which dates back to the fifth century. Discoveries like this have made Gates’ television series, Finding Your Roots, one of the most popular series in PBS history. Now in its third season, the program uses both traditional paper trail research and the latest in DNA testing and analysis to reveal the family histories of well-known people who shape our contemporary national identity. Using a team of genealogists to decode chromosomal relationships, and experienced researchers to sift through published and unpublished records left behind by ancestors, Gates constructs what is often a surprising and emotional ancestral narrative of each guest on the program. Guests on the program receive a Book of Life containing all the information discovered about their ancestors: an extensive family tree, copies of historical records used to assemble the tree, photos of newly-found family members, and a DNA profile that reaches back even further to reveal geographic regions of ancestral origin. In addition to well-known personalities,
everyday people are sometimes featured on the program in a parallel story line. In one episode Dr. Gates had his friends at a local barbershop take a DNA test to determine their ethnic and racial makeup, with each friend betting on their own percentage of African, European, and Native American heritage. However, it is witnessing the genuine and powerful impact of the discovery of a previously unknown ancestral story that makes the program so compelling. In this season’s third episode, comedian and actress Maya Rudolph was reduced to tears as she read the nameless entries in a Kentucky plantation ledger representing members of her family in the mid-1800s, including a five-year-old boy. In season two, Gates and Finding Your Roots came under fire when it was revealed that the series had acquiesced to actor Ben Affleck’s request that his slaveholding past be omitted from the program, highlighting the complex mix of conflicts and inspirations that our family legacies can present. According to Dr. Gates, the greatest contribution of the series is exploring how different racial, religious, and ethnic backgrounds challenge many of our long-held national myths. “When you strip away all physical appearances,” he says, “we are primally and fundamentally related at the genetic level. We’re also related through a commonality of human experience. Our dreams, trials, moments of defeat and transcendence. We’re all members of the human community no matter what our physical differences.”

researching african american ancestry in virginia
Researching African American An Researchers have long lamented the lack of primary sources for information about the history and ancestry of African Americans. Documents about people and families, enslaved or free, either do not exist or have been all but inaccessible. Virginia is the home, however, of two important online initiatives that are collecting and organizing such records into searchable digital databases that, for the first time, give researchers and genealogists modern tools to piece together the complex puzzle of African American heritage. The Unknown No Longer project of the Virginia Historical Unknown No Longer - http://unknownnolonger.vahistorical.org Society has researched more than eight million of the Society’s unpublished least part of their lives in Virginia, provides documents, dating back to the 17th century, to unprecedented links to family ancestries hidden gather names and information about Virginians for generations in these documents. At the Library of Virginia, the first of African American descent. Unknown No phase of Virginia Untold: The African American Longer was launched in 2011 through a grant from Dominion Resources. The project’s goal Narrative was recently announced. This new is to study private historical records in hopes of and searchable collection of digital records finding any biographical detail about enslaved illuminates the pre-Civil War experiences Virginians named in the records. In some cases, of African Americans; the information is only a name on a bill of sale may survive. But documented in the Library’s vast primary some documents may provide details of family source materials. Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. has relationships, occupations, dates of birth and referred to the Civil War as “a roadblock for death, names of owners, and properties on many when researching their African American heritage,” as many important details of their which enslaved Virginians toiled. The Historical Society is finding names lives were never documented. Laws forbade in wills, correspondence, inventories, family many slaves to learn to read and write, so they Bibles, and memoirs, among other paperwork. were unable to leave the written materials that The project’s free and public website includes so many families take for granted. The project, also funded by a Dominion high-resolution scans of each page. The database, which contains more than 13,000 Resources grant, began in 2013. It has indexed names of African Americans who lived at more than 100,000 African American names
and created nearly 40,000 digital images that are on the Library of Virginia website. The images include freedom law suits, coroners’ inquisitions, certificates of importation, deeds of emancipation, cohabitation registers, tax lists, and more. Such varied record types often come together to paint historical portraits of individual men and women, including their migrations from one locality to another—freed slaves received a freedom certificate that they registered with locality officials. When the United States banned the importation of slaves after 1807, Virginia became one of the nation’s largest internal sources in the slave trade. At the start of the Civil War in 1861, Virginia was home to more than a half million slaves, the largest enslaved population in the country. As a result, many American families with slave ancestors have roots that can be traced to Virginia. Now these families have two new resources for finding those ancestors.

THE SOUNDTRACK OF LIFE IS ELECTRIC There is a soundtrack that accompanies your every day – whether it’s the rolling tumble of the dryer or the coffee pot dripping with your morning cup. But what we often consider background noise is actually an electric score that accompanies our lives. It’s a rich symphony of cadences and clicks, buzzes, bells, whistles and whirs, and it’s there all the time.

Important 2016–2017 Inform
Good Things Come So, For Our April 2017 Prog We’ll be announcing four amazing programs tonight. And the fifth much later.
Every fall, we ask whom you would like to see speak at The Richmond Forum in the following season, and you always respond with some really incredible people. Unfortunately, some of those people we are simply not able to present due to our booking schedule. Our standard practice is to line up our speakers 12 to 18 months in advance of their program dates so that we can unveil our full season lineup to you in March or April—nearly eight months before the season begins. That model makes things neat and tidy for us and our subscribers, but doesn’t work for every speaker, including some of the biggest names that you ask us to bring to The Forum. There are many “A-list” names that simply can’t commit to an event over a year away—mostly those with quite busy “day jobs.” If we were to invite them much closer to our program date, however, we would have a real chance; they’ve told us this over and over. That’s why this January, The Richmond Forum board of directors approved a recommendation from our executive director to hold open our April 2017 program date to be booked and announced later, and to hold back a large share of our speaker budget with the intent of booking a bigname speaker on that date. At this time, we don’t know whom that speaker will be, but we are excited by the potential names that this change in approach could bring to our stage.

Online Subscription Renewal: Les 2016–2017 Season Renewals
Last year, nearly 80% of our subscribers renewed their season subscriptions via our website and nearly one-quarter renewed before receiving our renewal packet in the mail. Given that, it makes sense for us to dramatically reduce the amount of paper that we generate at renewal time. Tonight, following our season announcement, we will send our usual renewal e-mail to the primary e-mail address for each subscriber. As in past years, this e-mail will include your customer number and a PIN that will allow you to renew your subscription securely online, request seat upgrades, and update your contact information.
mation for Our Subscribers
to Those Who Wait. gram, We’re Going to Wait. When will the April 22, 2017 speaker be announced? Our plan is to announce this speaker
at our March 2017 program. It could be earlier. How can I renew if I don’t know all of the speakers? We hope that over the years The
Richmond Forum has earned your trust. We’ve made this decision to address a challenge in the way we book speakers so that we can bring you the best possible 2016-2017 season. If you’ve been with us for a few years, you will remember that our subscribers were asked to renew for the 20112012 season without knowing whom the January speaker would be. A few months later, we announced that speaker to be Robert Gates, who turned out to be our highest-rated speaker of the last eight seasons. This will be a similar situation, except the announcement will come much later.
-2017
nouncement
When will I receive my ticket for this program? You will receive all
of your tickets in October, as usual. On the April ticket, the speaker will simply be indicated as “TBA.” Is this going to be a new practice every season? Probably not; we’re
not sure we could handle the suspense every season! If this proves to be a well-received strategy, we may employ it from time to time as a means of securing amazing speakers we could not otherwise bring to our stage.
ss PAper. Less Postage. Less Delay. Because we know that it helps to have a physical reminder in your bills-to-pay stack, we will mail a greatly streamlined renewal announcement that will also contain the information that you need to log into the online renewal site. Don’t use e-mail, or prefer to pay by check?
We do have some wonderful longtime subscribers who don’t use e-mail. Don’t worry! We know who you are, and we will mail you a renewal packet on Monday. If you do use e-mail but would still prefer to renew by mail so you can pay by check, just let us know and we’ll gladly send you a form.

JULIA GILLARD at The Richmond Forum MARCH 12, 2016
Julia Gillard, prime minister of Australia from 2010–2013, challenged the audience to define their sense of purpose by deciding what is most important to them.
“She is one of the best speakers to ever present at the Forum. The structure of her speech was perfect, the delivery was clear, concise, organized and humorous. She explained concepts well and presented challenging insights on leadership, but with a light touch. I think she drew the audience in and then took us to a deeper understanding of how we can all learn from one another— including our allies.” Subscriber survey comment Rob Thomas and Tanya Gerard of Didge Evolution performed on a wide assortment of Australian didgeridoos before the program and during intermission.
Before performing the national anthems of Australia and the U.S.A., Susan Greenbaum provided some background on Advance Australia Fair.

We believe in the ripple effect Just like a single stone tossed into a body of water, a single interaction can have a ripple effect in someone’s day. So many of our interactions each day are with companies, so shouldn’t we make them great ones? If someone walks away from an experience with your business with a smile on their face, you can change their day. If you change enough days, you change the world.
