Sixteen York Region residents are among dozens of Canadians who have been infected by an outbreak of an intestinal illness called cyclospora since May, according to the region’s director of infectious disease control. “We don’t know yet what the source is,” Marjolyn Pritchard said. The microscopic parasite passed through people’s feces causes stomach cramps, diarrhea and loss of appetite and is usually contracted through infected water or food, particularly fruits and vegetables. Eleven York residents who picked up the illness had travelled outside of Canada. Five of the cases are not related to travel. Of the one case in May and four cases in June, one person had travelled to another province and the rest had not left Ontario. In a normal year, York would have no more than two domestic cases of cyclospora in the same time frame, Pritchard said. “It is certainly more than we have had reported in the past and the province is seeing the same thing. So, in Ontario, we’re seeing an overall increase,” she said. The source of the illness is not known, so it isn’t possible to say whether the domestic cases were contracted within the region, Pritchard said. “Whenever we get any of these cases, we do the normal follow-up of finding out what people have consumed prior to the period in which they would have become ill or the incubation period,” she said. “So, we do try and understand where people pick up these infections, because it’s not normally something Ontarians should be picking up or York Region residents should be picking up because it’s See WASH, page 22.

Not to mention entreaties from your own children, who know that the only thing worse than heading back to school, is heading back to school with a battered knapsack, tattered binders and broken pens and pencils. For parents of adult children, however, the end of summer and fall’s season of “new beginnings” may bring a different dilemma. Thus I found myself this past weekend, clearing through and trying to organize clutter and old textbooks and school “stuff” of adult children. Some of you may recognize the controversial problem — how long do you leave a bedroom of a departed adult child intact before you re-purpose it to become a guest room, an office or an allpurpose storage room? I hasten to report that my “departed” daughter is alive and well, living with her boyfriend in nearby Peel Region. She only returns home occasionally to grab clothing items. So I asked her delicately and tactfully (as much as possible conveyed via text messages), if I could make her bedroom into a guest bedroom over the next few weeks. “You can always return home any time,” I reassured her, “you are always our daughter”. “Sure, no problem” was the breezy response, nicely letting me know that a better option if they ever had to move was available through bigger lodgings at her boyfriend’s family home in Guelph. So I opened her closet and peered under the bed, to begin my room re-purpose project. Yikes — I won’t describe too much of what I found under the bed, suffice to day that it entailed

Marney Beck at least half a laundry load of clothes. The closet yielded several pairs of shoes and sandals that I bet she’s completely forgotten about, along with numerous pretty dresses that had fallen in a tangle to the floor. However, I did find numerous colourful folders, shiny new binders and colourful notepads, some with price tags still on them. Rooting through several bags and boxes of my son’s college leftovers, which were gathering dust in a different closet, I found similar unused school supplies. I now have a collection of brand new and gently used school supplies to contribute to the Salvation Army school supplies drive in Richmond Hill and Vaughan. If you’ve got a similar collection of items languishing in cupboards or closets at your home, you can also contribute to the regional 360 Kids school supply drive. If you aren’t in my position and your younger children succeed in dragging you back-to-school shopping, every Staples store across York Region is running a Staples for Students School Supply Drive, collecting items required by needy children in your own community. Staples partners with the United Way in York Region and Optimist clubs to ensure the supplies get to less fortunate families. However stretched your school supply budget may be, it’s certain there are families in your community who are finding it tougher and who truly need a little back-toschool help.

Which of our federal candidates and party leaders have integrity? Recent political polls confirm voters’ uncertainty about who to vote for, which politicians are committed to work for us, all of us — not for just “them”. After all, integrity is not just about telling the truth. We need to know — who can we trust to be a team player on behalf of all of us? Why don’t we — local media and citizens — ask candidates about integrity? The Liberal newspaper published an editorial Sept. 25, 2014, applauding such a citizen initiative in the Richmond Hill municipal campaign, when the apparently naive question was put to 52 Richmond Hill federal and municipal candidates with surprising results. The same initiative was used in the Richmond Hill Liberal Party riding nomination process: two signed an integrity pledge; two did not. Interestingly, nearly all municipal candidates last year strongly suspected of not having integrity refused to sign the offered integrity pledge. Some were offended at being asked. But candidates are applying to us, the voters, for jobs. Therefore, we are entitled to ask questions about such critical qualities as integrity. The wording of a national pledge could be as simple as “I pledge that I, my team and my party will act with integrity at all times during the coming election campaign and in office. Integrity means that at all times I will act on behalf of the best interests of all Canadians.” Clearly, those who signed such a pledge would have an advantage over those who do not. Some candidates may be offended, thinking that their integrity, which they take for granted, is being doubted. Not necessarily. As their

potential employers, we have the right to ask all applicant candidates to declare and prove their credentials. Behaving with integrity is critical to their ability to use their other expertise and credentials to create and work to beneficially implement policies and programs and then to supervise and administer them. Before we vote, we must know that our representatives will perform with integrity. Citizens at party or public meetings should ask candidates if they have signed such a pledge, and if not, why not. Copies of signed pledges for both Richmond Hill ridings could be sent to The Liberal newspaper, which could keep a simple record throughout the federal campaign, then identifying those who have signed and those who have not. To find out more about this pledge initiative, go to marrette.cc/integrity-pledge. html

office attire, column by Marney Beck, July 30. I always enjoy reading your columns in the paper. This column reminded me of my own office experience. We were three girls, sharing a freezing corner office in a brand new building. I was the lucky one with the cold air outlet right over my desk. Instead of an old T-shirt, we stuffed several socks into the vent. Our boss next door was not a happy camper when the cold air started to blast down over his desk. :) I couldn’t resist sharing this tidbit with you and your readers.

Union leaders with the Ontario Elementary Catholic Teachers Association will resume labour negotiations with the provincial government this week. Bargaining was to take place Wednesday

and today, Thursday. Catholic teachers have been without a contract for more than a year and will be in a legal strike position Aug. 17. The new round of bargaining comes as the union launches a new website called Teachers Matter, which it said will inform parents about issues that could impact Ontario classrooms. “Parents deserve to know what’s at stake in these negotiations,” union president Ann Hawkins said in a statement. “We hope that teachersmatter.ca will help parents understand that there’s more at stake here than a labour disruption. We all want to reach a deal, but not at any cost to public education.”

‘Lucky’ feeling nets man $100,000 A Richmond Hill resident had a lucky feeling recently and purchased several lottery tickets in Toronto. Then he was pleasantly surprised to realize he’d won $100,000. Thabit Elyas earned the top prize with Instant Crossword Trippler (Game #1810). “I was buying groceries and just felt lucky that day, so purchased some tickets and look what happened,” exclaimed Elyas, while at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto last week, picking up his winnings. “I thought I had won $100, then scanned the ticket again and saw the words ‘top prize’ and a number with many more zeros,” he said. “I was in the right place at exactly the right time.” Elyas is looking forward to spoiling his family. Instant Crossword Tripler is available for $5 a play and the top prize is $100,000. Odds of winning a prize are 1 in 3.70. The winning ticket was purchased at Coppa’s Fresh Market on Dufferin Street in Toronto.

Two charged after car crashes into building BY KIM ZARZOUR

kzarzour@yrmg.com

Five people were arrested — and two males charged — after a vehicle crashed into a building in Richmond Hill Monday afternoon. York Regional Police Constable Laura Nicolle said an officer had observed the vehicle, which appeared to have stolen plates, at 12:40 p.m. The car failed to stop for the officer and fled the scene. The police vehicle did not pursue, and the stolen car later crashed into a steel business located at 105 Industrial Rd., just east of Yonge Street.

The five occupants — two males and three females, all youths — fled on foot, but were quickly apprehended and arrested, Nicolle said. On Tuesday, York Regional Police reported that the two males were charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and flight while pursued by a police officer. The first youth charged is 17 years old from Toronto. The second youth charged is also aged 17, with no fixed address. No one was injured as a result of the incident.

The Ontario Provincial Police have charged 30 per cent more motorists with driving impaired on highways in the Greater Toronto Area this year over the same period last year. “Absolutely, it’s very alarming to see this kind of increase in numbers,” Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said. From Jan. 1 to Aug. 1, the OPP laid 1,020 impaired driving and driving over the legal limit criminal charges against drivers on GTA highways. That compares to 776 charges during the first seven months of 2014. While the numbers aren’t broken down by region, York Region would likely have “an equal number” of percentage of charges laid against motorists driving impaired on highways 400 and 404, Schmidt said. While the number of impaired charges on GTA highways has jumped significantly, the number of alcohol-related charges across the province has decreased by 11 per cent, Schmidt said. Meanwhile, the number of fatalities caused by impaired driving across Ontario has dropped by more than 40 per cent so far this year. There were 19 deaths in the first seven months of this year, compared to 34 during the same period last year. Schmidt didn’t know if the increase in the GTA charges is a result of more impaired drivers being on the road or more being caught. But he credited other motorists for reporting

suspected drunk drivers by calling 911. “The good thing is seeing the overall provincial fatality numbers on the decline. While charges are up (in the GTA), our fatalities, our death rate is down,” Schmidt said. “A lot of that has to do with members of the public calling in with these suspected impaired drivers.” While impaired drivers may escape notice in more remote areas of the province, that’s not the case in the GTA, Schmidt said. “There’s so much traffic out on the highways throughout the Toronto area and GTA that when drivers are impaired, they’re seen by many, many motorists and many of those motorists are calling in to police to report these vehicles,” he said. “When we get a call for that kind of behaviour, we’re going to make a priority to get that vehicle stopped and find out what’s going on and if they’re impaired, take them off the highway. Many of these calls may have saved the lives of many people, because we’ve been able to get into position and get these vehicles stopped before they’re involved in a wreck.” Impaired driving continues to be a leading cause of injury and death on Ontario’s highways, Schmidt said. “We need drivers to understand if you’ve had any amount of alcohol, we don’t want you behind the wheel because your decisions are going to be changed based on the alcohol that’s in your system and those decisions could end in a loss of life,” he said. If you see an impaired driver, call 911.

George Kun was enjoying a paddle in his kayak on Lake Wilcox on July 26, when cries for help interrupted his peaceful summer pastime. The member of the Richmond Hill Canoe Club heard children’s cries, but couldn’t immediately see where the trouble was. He finally saw a tiny inflatable rubber boat with two boys inside, calling out “Sir, sir!” He guessed they were possibly ages 8 and 12, sitting facing each other, holding small plastic single blade paddles. “My heart melted, because they looked so scared and clueless. They were also extremely cute, with big eyes and rich curly hair,” recalls Kun. He later learned they were brothers who had come recently to Canada from Somalia with their parents. “Sir, can you please help us to get to the shore?” asked the older boy. Kun agreed, but told the boys they had to calm down and follow his instructions. “I told them not be scared any

The father thanked him, too, but began lecturing his sons in a loud voice with words that sounded harsh and seemed to upset the boys. “I said I wanted to tell him something, both as a parent and a kayaker. I told him that the boys were too young to be alone in a boat, that they must wear life jackets, and they should learn basic paddling skills before venturing on water.” Kun also pointed out that it was getting dark and that the nice, calm lake can very easily get windy and unfriendly. The man looked distressed at Kun’s lecture, but Kun said after prodding from his wife, the husband thanked him again, both for his help and his advice. “As I was paddling away, the boys suddenly started waving at me with both hands up and yelling again ‘Thank you, Sir’!”

Safety tips for the upcoming school year With the summer break coming to a close, households across the country are getting ready for the drastic changes in schedule and routine. Due to busy work schedules, most parents are still working when their children come home from school. This makes it especially important to have a proper security plan in place for your children. It’s important to establish and practice a set routine with your children to keep them safe during this busy time of year. These steps will then become second nature to them and will help ensure that they are maintaining proper safety habits while you’re out. Here are some tips that you can use to help keep your child safe during the back to school season. • Organize group walks where your children and their friends walk home together. • Ensure they never go off anywhere by themselves and keep an eye out for each other. • Inform them that strangers who take an unusual interest in them should be avoided and let a trusted adult know about the incident.

Become. Go beyond. TMS School goes far beyond the ordinary to help prepare our students to realize their potential as happy and fulfilled individuals in university, career and life.

• Put into place a neighbourhood watch to help keep an eye out for your children and for any suspicious activity. • If your kids come home to find an open door, shattered window, or a torn screen, instruct your kids to walk away from the house to a neighbour’s and contact you immediately. • Once safely in the home, remind them to never let anyone into the house; to keep all doors locked; and set the alarm system if you have one.

Our educational experience integrates challenge and inspiration, seamlessly combining a flagship Montessori program (18 months to Grade 6) and our welcoming International Baccalaureate (IB) program (Grade 7 to 12).

Newcomer orientation programs offered By Teresa Latchford

tlatchford@yrmg.com

The York Catholic District School Board presents a Newcomer Orientation Week program each summer. In partnership with Catholic Community Services of York Region, the York Region District School Board and Citizenship and Immigration Canada, the NOW program and similar Newcomer Orientation Day programs will run at select high schools throughout the region in late August and early September. All newcomer students who arrived in 2014 or 2015 and are entering Grade 9 are encouraged to register. “The newcomer orientation programs provide an informal, fun and informative opportunity for students, who are new to Canada, to adjust to high school life here in York Region, before school begins,” education director Patricia Preston said. “This greatly alleviates some first-dayof-school nervousness that students may have, while also welcoming them to our school communities and helping them

feel at home and become familiar with what is a new environment for them.” The program is designed to help students adjust to high school life in Canada through a series of interactive activities and information sessions. Activities such as school scavenger hunts will help participants learn about key school services. Other activities include a simulated timetable exercise and discussions about graduation requirements, extracurricular activities and supports offered at school. Not only will students have a better understanding of routines and general practices in local high schools, but they will also have the chance to make friends with other participants, meet peer leaders and former newcomer students. Registration is required and can be completed by contacting the settlements worker for the student’s particular school. Those interested in attending and who will be attending a school not hosting the program should contact Catholic Community Services of York Region at 905731-8281.

Man charged with stealing underwear at open house By LAURA FINNEY

lfinney@yrmg.com

A 65-year-old Markham man has been charged with theft after women’s underwear was stolen during an open house. On July 26, police responded to a call in a Markham home in the Major Mackenzie Drive and McCowan Road area. According to York Regional Police, the house was for sale

and the owners were hosting an open house. Surveillance video from the day shows a man stealing women’s underwear from a drawer in the master bedroom. The suspect was identified and a search warrant executed on his home, where more women’s underwear was located. Siu-But Chui is charged

with theft under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime. He will appear in court in Newmarket Aug. 28. Investigators are asking real estate agents and anyone who hosted an open house recently to come forward if they have experienced a similar theft. Call 1-866-8765423 ext. 7541 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

not transmitted person to person and you’re not going to find it here as a normal thing in York Region.” With 83 cases of cyclospora being investigated across Canada, the Public Health Agency of Canada issued a statement Aug. 8 saying the illness has sent two people to hospital, but no deaths have been reported. At 74, Ontario has the vast majority of the cases of people who became sick between May 9 and July 18, the agency said. Three cases are from British Columbia, one is from Alberta and five are from Quebec. “The risk to Canadians is low but people with weakened immune systems, young children and older adults are at increased risk

for developing complications if they get sick,” the agency said. It is investigating the outbreak with officials from provincial public health departments, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Health Canada. While the cause of the outbreak is not known, past outbreaks have been linked to imported produce such as pre-packaged salad mix, basil, cilantro, berries, mesclun lettuce and snow peas, the agency said. You are advised to wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly, not to ingest water from lakes and rivers, wash your hands regularly and clean food preparation and cooking surfaces thoroughly. The mother of the man police have accused of shooting four people, killing two, at Vaughan’s Moka Cafe in June is pleading for him to turn himself in. While Vita Ellis cast doubt on the York Regional Police investigators’ assertion that her son, Jason Hay, was the man responsible for the death of Christopher De Simone and Maria Voci, she insisted he should get himself a lawyer and attend the police station to clear his name. Although she turned down an interview request with yorkregion.com, the Mississauga resident spoke to the CBC, explaining she doesn’t believe her son could have been responsible for the murder and doubting it was him in the surveillance photographs released by police. This despite court documents showing the 27-year-old has been convicted of crimes 50 times and that he had just finished serving a seven-year stint in prison for manslaughter. It was last Wednesday when police released an image of Hay, alleging the muscular suspect was not to be approached as he was considered armed and dangerous. Police believe he entered the Hwy. 7 and Islington Avenue cafe, which doubled as an illegal gambling site after business hours, and shot four people.

Voci, 47, from Vaughan, who was working at the cafe, was shot dead. Also gunned down was De Simone, 24, who was a regular at the cafe. Former mayoral candidate Rocco Di Paola survived. The fourth victim, who fears for his safety, has not been named by police. Although police have acknowledged the crime was targeted, there’s no word on who, if anyone, was the intended target and what was the motive for the shooting. During the interview, Ellis, sitting in her living room, said she thinks her son might be scared and said she talked to him last Thursday, explaining his incredulous reaction to the news that he’s wanted for murder. “I don’t think he had anything at all to do with any shooting,” she said, acknowledging he may have driven the car. “To me, in that picture, that didn’t look like my son.” She then explained the toll the incident has taken on her. “I can’t function normal, I’ve been through it already, but, again, this is worse,” she added. “I would like him to get a lawyer and go with the lawyer.” Ellis also explained that her son had surgery to remove a cyst in July, which would be after the shooting took place. She said in the interview she worried whether the incision was healing or if he needed medical attention.

In addition to the world renowned Toronto International Film Festival every September, TIFF also runs year-round programming. This summer, Thornhill’s Samantha Zanjani is playing a key role as a volunteer in TIFF’s Summer In Italy film series, which runs all summer until Sept. 5. The self-described film enthusiast volunteers as a facilitator for TIFF’s 2015 summer series featuring classic Italian films such as La Dolce Vita, The Fiances, and Big Deal on Madonna Street — with all films being screened at the TIFF Bell Lightbox building downtown on King Street. The Summer In Italy series aims to cel-

ebrate Italian cinema and provides Italian Canadians and lovers of all things Italian with the unique opportunity to travel in back in time and rediscover Italy through the decades. “After the films, a group of us unites in one of the TIFF green rooms and we discuss what we liked about the movie and certain scenes that stick out about the film. My role is to facilitate the discussion,” said the 24-yearold woman. According to TIFF’s communications manager, Lina Rodriguez, the purpose of the post-screening discussions is to connect film lovers and to get them more engaged. “Like a film club, these volunteer-facili-

tated talks offer an opportunity for visitors to share and engage in conversation with fellow film enthusiasts,” explained Rodriguez. “A discussion can really be fun and can open up your perspective on the film you saw. I think every time you watch a film, you can take something away from it.” Having first volunteered with TIFF during its film festival in September of 2012, the recent Ryerson graduate says she is more than happy to take on new roles within the organization. “I started volunteering a few years back during the film festival, but then I realized that they were doing cool stuff like this year ‘round. That’s when I decided to branch out

Zanjani says she’s been actively recommending the Summer in Italy series to her friends and family from the Thornhill area. “These are classic Italian films that you wouldn’t get to see otherwise in mainstream theatres; so if you love film, it’s a great opportunity to see all these classics in a cinema setting.” TIFF is also running a tribute the late Italian director, Vittorio de Sica, featuring his popular films in another series called More Than Life Itself, which also runs all summer until Sept. 6. Our Water: An Epic Journey Where does our water come from and how does it get to our taps? The system that makes it happen is huge, hidden and fascinating. Here’s a glimpse of how it works. York Region provides drinking water to an estimated 1.1 million residents. More than 85 per cent of our water comes from Lake Ontario; the rest, from Lake Simcoe and groundwater. Before it reaches our taps, water is treated to make it safe to drink. Depending on where you live, drinking water might travel more than 80 kilometres to get to you. At the heart of our water distribution system are massive pumps, moving millions of litres of drinking water from treatment plants through watermains and large distribution pipes within the system. Through this vast underground network, water is driven upward over hills into special storage tanks and water towers. Water towers play a vital role in our drinking water system. They equalize pressure, provide large volumes of water for fire-fighting and provide an emergency supply if needed. Water towers hold up to 7,550 cubic metres of water, about as much as three Olympic-size swimming pools. From the lake – to a pumping station – to a water tower – to your taps, our water goes on an epic journey through a complex system that is rarely seen. We’ve taken videos that will open the door to our underground world. We think you’ll be amazed. Visit york.ca/wateris

Harpers pay numerous visits to York By Laura Finney

lfinney@yrmg.com

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has made three visits to York Region since calling an early election — and twice in Markham. On Friday he campaigned in a Richmond Hill back yard, where he spoke about universal childcare benefits. “It was a pleasure to have PM Harper in Richmond Hill to discuss UCCB and how it will benefit every family with children,” tweeted Michael Parsa, the Conservative candidate for the Richmond Hill riding. On Monday, the prime minister visited St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church in Markham, where he was joined by Jobson Easow, Conservative candidate for the MarkhamThornhill riding. Harper spoke about the Conservative Party’s plans to bring 10,000 refugees from Syria and Iraq over the next few years, if his government is re-elected. He also pledged to give $9 million to fund groups working to protect targeted religious areas and artefacts. A notice from the Harper campaign team went out early Monday morning to media about the 10:30 a.m. appearance. He also returned to Markham Tuesday,

with another early morning alert to media, and spoke about plans to strengthen the National Anti-Drug Strategy. His pledges included increasing resources for RCMP clandestine laboratory teams, renewing the mandate of the Mental Health Commission of Canada for 10 years, while updating it to focus on links between substance abuse and mental health, plus creating a national helpline for families. During Tuesday’s press conference at the Hilton Toronto/Markham Suites Conference Centre, he was joined by Conservative candidate for Markham-Stouffville, Paul Calandra; Conservative candidate for Markham-Thornhill, Jobson Easow; and Conservative candidate for Markham-Unionville, Bob Soraya. Harper was questioned about his views on Insite, a supervised injection site in B.C. He was also questioned about marijuana and the Mike Duffy trial. These campaign stops come on the heels of a visit the previous Wednesday by the prime minster’s wife, Laureen Harper, who dropped in on the campaign office of Conservative candidate Costas Menegakis, most recent MP for Richmond Hill, but now running in the new riding of Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill.

Due to unforeseen circumstances we will be postponing this event.

York Dragon Boat club paddles to first-place results mhayakawa@yrmg.com

The York Region Dragon Boat Club made waves at the national championships at the Welland International Flatwater Centre in Welland. The third-year Richmond Hill-based club padded its way to first-place results in the junior mixed 200-metre and 500m distances, and were second in the 2,000m. Based on their results during the three-day competition, which was held under cool and wet conditions, the 10-female, 10-male member entry finished first overall. In the junior open division, the York Region team placed second in the 200m and 500m distances. During the 2,000m race, the boat that was seeded first, the North Lambton Super Strokers, experienced some equipment malfunctions and was unable to finish the race. As a result, the York Region boat was awarded first. As a kind, sportsmanlike gesture at the end of the weekend, the York Region contingent elected to exchange their gold medals with the silver medals originally given to the North Lambton Super Strokers.

Kelly Leong, York Region Dragon Boat Club co-coach, along with Johnny Cheong, was elated with the results their two entries posted. “I’m really proud of how the team performed. The kids toughed out the crummy weather and it was a great team-building experience for them,” she said. “They have improved so much since the beginning of the season, in which they finished seventh at the Pickering Youth Festival in early June to a second-place finish at the Toronto Island Dragon Boat Festival to champions in the junior mixed division at the nationals.”
With paddlers hailing from various high schools in York Region and North York, the female participants included: Brittany Leong, Vanessa Trieu, Julianne Yu, Eryn Um, Allison A-Yeung, Lisa Storey, Cindy Chin, Alexandra Marshall, Amanda Coleman, Marissa Brown and Jolene Zheng. The male paddlers included: Sean Carlin, Christopher Tran, Hayden Gunraj, Nicholas Chi, Andy Zhao, Christopher Shah, Auston Chhor, Christian Strilchuk, Bob Long, Justin Pezzack, Brandon Chang, Leeyan Haw, Brandon Leung and Julian Leung.

Converting garages into livable spaces Many people decide to upgrade from their apartments or condominiums out of a need for more space. But even after moving into a new home, homeowners may soon begin to outgrow the room they have. Rather than looking for a new home, some homeowners consider expansion. Expanding a living space can be expensive, and a more affordable option may be converting existing basement or garage space into something more livable. Garages already are built on a foundation, have four walls and a roof overhead, so a garageconversion project is merely a matter of turning this utilitarian area into a living space. Before beginning the renovation, homeowners should consider the benefits versus the cost

of converting the garage. For those who are planning to grow old in a house, a garage conversion can be a worthy investment. But those who intend to sell their homes rather than retire in them may learn that a converted garage can affect home value and make it less desirable at resale. Compare your home to others in the area and see what your neighbours have done. If converted garages are the norm, your own renovation may fit in with others. Always apply for the proper permits and learn the zoning laws to see if a garage conversion is acceptable in your town or city. It’s best to go by the book so that work can be done in a proper manner and be inspected for safety. Many homeowners hope their garage-conversion projects will make their garages seem like a seamless part of the rest of the house. To do so, you will need to remove evidence the space was once a garage. Slab floor will need to be raised and insulated. Walls also will need to be insulated and finished to improve comfort and soundproofing. Many garages do not have windows, so for the garage to function as a renovated space, windows may need to be added.

One of the biggest transformations will come by way of modifying the garage door entry. Some homeowners prefer to leave the existing door so that the home still has the appearance of a garage from the curb, while others remove the garage door and rebuild the exterior wall so that it has a window or another architectural element. An architect can help suggest design elements that will camouflage the original garage look and make the space seem like it was always part of the main living area of the home.

Landscaping work also can minimize the appearance of an old garage. Spruce up outdoor space before hosting guests Beautiful summer nights make for great opportunities to invite some friends over for a starry soiree under the nighttime sky. Unlike house parties, at which guests will be spending most of their time indoors and in various rooms throughout the house, outdoor parties are often limited to smaller areas, such as patios and backyards. This can make things much less taxing on hosts, who won’t have much prep work to do to get an outdoor hosting area ready for party guests. But even an impromptu party requires planning and a little elbow grease before guests arrive. The following are a few areas to address before guests arrive for your next outdoor get-together.

Clear away debris The walkways and patio may not need too much attention, but give them a once-over with a broom to clear any debris. When clearing the patio of debris, move all furniture, making sure to sweep up any debris, including food, that might have fallen beneath tables and chairs since your most recent party,

or “al fresco” dinner. If the patio is especially dirty, consider power washing it to remove stubborn stains that can rob the area of its aesthetic appeal.

Clean the furniture Whether it’s been months since your last party on the patio or just a few days, the furniture must be cleaned. Unless items have been stored in a garage or shed, patio furnishings are exposed to the elements, and that means dirt, soil, soot or pollen may have accumulated on the furniture. Wipe down all cushions, using a mild detergent when necessary. Cushions may need some time to dry, so make this one of your first tasks, and leave cushions out in the sun so they dry more quickly. Once the cushions have been cleaned, wipe down the furniture with a wet towel to clear them of any dirt or debris.

Clean and inspect the grill The grill is a go-to accessory when hosting an outdoor party, so give the grill a thorough cleaning before the first guests arrive. Nothing brings a party to

a halt like hunger, and guests may begin to grow antsy if they are not served food in a reasonable amount of time. If you are using a propane grill, check to make sure the tanks are full as you clean the grill. Running out of propane is a summer soiree faux pas, so you might want to keep an extra tank handy just to be safe.

Clear the entryway to your home Your guests will likely be using the same entryway over and over again during the party, so focus on cleaning this entryway so guests don’t trip or have to jump over toys on their way to an indoor restroom. Once the entryway has been cleared of potential tripping hazards, make sure the indoor path to the restroom is clear as well. Hosting guests for an outdoor gettogether is one of the highlights of the summer, as the good weather doesn’t always last. A little bit of prep work will leave your guests impressed with your outdoor space.

How to get a designer-inspired home without the designer cost

| The Liberal | Thursday, August 13, 2015

As you flip through the glossy pages of design magazines, there are countless images of expertly-designed homes that are decorated in a way that seems to flow seamlessly from room to room. This is because designers consider each room in terms of its relation to another and choose colours that work together in harmony. This is especially important given the popularity of open concept homes, though not everyone hires a designer or has a knack for design. In most cases, choosing complementary paint colours can be tricky, so most homeowners end up picking one colour for an entire floor. But if you want to bring your walls to life, consider the following when picking colours for your home:

mood. Warm tones create a space that is inviting and gives off a positive energy. Neutrals create a space that is cozy yet balanced as they complement various looks and stay relevant over time. Cool colours create a space that is relaxing and provide styling options for either an urban or coastal feel.

What is your personal sensibility - bold, balanced or subtle?

To create a bold space, combine colours in the same family – such as red and pink – but separate them with a clean and crisp neutral. For a balanced space, create a single accent wall featuring a saturated colour and surround it with more neutral tones. Zhao earns wild card to main draw, but drops first match BY DAVID LI

Stars are proud champions of provincial novice ball hockey tournament.

Stars are novice B ball hockey champs

The Richmond Hill Stars Novice B team were champions at this summer’s OBHF Ball Hockey Provincials. The team was made up with players from the Squirt (2009), Tyke (2007, 2008) and Novice (2005, 2006) divisions in a tournament which consisted of 14 teams. In round robin play, Richmond Hill Stars were 1-1-1, squeaked into the B semi-finals where they met Guelph and won 3-1. In the finals Richmond Hill met Toronto

Withrow and won 4-1. Head coach Charlene Messina and assistant coaches Alfie Messina and Joe Polgar are proud of all team members: Luca Messina, Marco Messina, Carsen Polgar, Adrian Mainolfi, Carson Dulisse, Cohen Dulisse, Connor Mitchell, Jasnor Parmar, Joseph Hinton, Matthew Chang, Michael Gomez, Nicholas Visaticki, Ryan Ghorasy, Zeidan Somani, Stephen Puorro, Joseph Poma and Kaden Pitrie.

Fresh off her gold medal performance at the Pan Am Games, Richmond Hill’s Carol Zhao was back in action at the Aviva Centre this week. Zhao and her Pan Am doubles tennis partner, Gabriela Dombrowski of Ottawa, were both awarded wild cards directly into the singles main draw of the Rogers Cup by tournament organizers. “I obviously love playing in Toronto and the Rogers Cup only happens once every two years in Toronto, so I’m just going to try my best to make the most of this opportunity,” she said. Unfortunately, Zhao didn’t make it past the first round in singles competition, and at press time yesterday was slated to play in doubles competition. The 20-year-old is attending Standford University full-time on a tennis scholarship, where she enjoyed a stellar sophomore year — finishing off the season as the second ranked women’s tennis player in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). “The college season is a long one and to be consistent enough to finish with that ranking is something I’m pretty happy about,” said the science major.

Currently ranked 371st in the world, Zhao knew she would have her hands full against higher ranked opponents at the Rogers Cup. “I’m happy with the way I’ve been playing this summer, so I’m really looking forward to getting out there and just playing my game and really just giving it my best effort,” she said prior to hitting the courts. - David Li is a Thormhill freelance writer.

Ferguson seeks Parapan gold in wheelchair basketball By Michael Hayakawa

mhayakawa@yrmg.com

PHILLIP MACCULLUM PHOTO

Richmond Hill’s Tracey Ferguson (forground) aims for the basket during the 2014 gold-medal game at the women’s world wheelchair basketball championships.

Tracey Ferguson is no stranger to competing for Canada in wheelchair basketball on the international stage, nor is she unfamiliar with reaching the medal podium. A 24-year veteran with the national team, the Richmond Hill native who also resided in Maple and Markham, has been a member of Paralympic gold-medal-winning teams in 1992, 1996 and 2000. She was also part of a bronzemedal winning team for Canada in 2004. Ferguson, 40, is preparing to make her second Parapan Am Games appearance, with semi finals slated for today, Thursday. It’s not every day Ferguson can showcase her skills before family members and friends. “The opportunity to play at home, in front of my family and friends, is a dream come true,” she said. “I think every athlete hopes for this chance, and for me to realize it, is pretty special.” Named to two world all-star teams in 1998 and 2002, Ferguson’s introduction to wheelchair basketball came when she was 12 years old after she incurred spinal surgery that left her legs paralyzed at the age of nine.

Discovering wheelchair athletics through a local fitness centre, which in turn directed her to Variety Village in Scarborough, Ferguson was quick to credit Joe Millage, who at that time served as Variety Village’s director of sport, in helping launch her storied on-court career. “He was the one who introduced me to Variety Village and all the sports they had to offer,” recalled Ferguson. “Joe and Steve Bialowas, who is currently the men’s national team coach, were the coaches of the junior team and they were my first coaches. They created a positive environment for kids to learn the sport, discover who we were and really challenged us to be the best we could be, in a supportive way. I cannot thank these two coaches enough for that. “A few of the players I played with at juniors went on to successful international careers, but many others did not; they just played recreationally... but Steve and Joe treated us all the same, encouraged all of us and taught us that everyone had a role to play and contributed to the team... We were all equal and we all had to push each other to be our personal best, whatever level that may be.” Earning her spot on this year’s national team when a selection camp was conducted last December and

being one of the veterans, Ferguson said she’s more than willing to provide leadership on and off the court. The more leaders there are, she said, the better the atmosphere that can be created. “If there is some advice I can offer or if people have questions, then I am happy to help out,” she said. “I think we create an environment where we all provide different types of leadership and encourage people to lead in their own ways.” Ferguson anticipates it will be a challenge for Canada to win the gold in Toronto. Adding to Canada’s incentive, the Games serve as a 2016 Paralympic qualifier, with the top three countries advancing in addition to Brazil, which gained automatic entry being the host. Citing the United States, Mexico and Peru, which were at the world championships in 2014, as teams that will pose a formidable challenge, Ferguson said Canada can be competitive. The key, she said, will be for Canada to play as a cohesive unit. “It is going to be a tough tournament, but we have a great team and really skilled players,” she said. “If we play like a team and really stick together, I think it will put us where we want to be.”

Aged scotch fitting toast to ‘historic’ life BY SANDRA BOLAN

lzheimer’s stole Marion Lewis’ memories, but her research into Whitchurch-Stouffville’s past will never be forgotten. Lewis, along with Ruth Burkholder, created the historical walking tours of Stouffville back in the early 1990s. “She certainly knew the town, knew the people and we would have not done the walking tours without her,” Burkholder said. History always seemed to be a part of Marion’s life. When she went back to school in 1968 to get her teaching degree, according to her son Rod, students were more interested in hearing what life was like from her, versus learning about it from a textbook.

‘Funeral’ wishes Once Marion received her degree, she spent a couple of years teaching English to new Canadians. She then gave it up to become a stay-at-home mom. But she never lost her interest in learning. When her husband Gary, described as the love of her life, died in 1985, Marion needed something to fill her days. She saw an ad in a Stouffville newspaper for a genealogy class and took it. Among those she helped connect to other family members was Bill van der Zande, a distant cousin by marriage. Marion was a member of the Markham Berczy Settlers Association, which was formed to organize the 200th anniversary of the 67 families from Germany who

settled in Markham. Historian John Lunau organized a women’s committee to research the genealogy of these families. Marion was tasked with researching the genealogy of the Eckhardt and Ulsen/Elsen families, said Lorne Smith, secretary/ treasurer of the organization. Marion went on to become a valued member of the board of directors of the Markham Berczy Settlers Association until she was incapacitated, he said. Marion grew up in a working class family with five siblings. Edna was five years younger and “I was probably the bratty little sister and had to tag along with her friends.” Although Edna hung around Marion when they were kids, the sisters weren’t close. It wasn’t until Edna was 40 and Marion hosted an 80th birthday party for their mother, did the two siblings connect. They went to Florida together and Edna often spent weekends in Stouffville with her sister. “We were the best of friends,” she said. As a child, Edna could not pronounce Marion, so she called her “Mem”. It was one of the many nicknames Marion would earn over the years, including Martha and Leapin’ Lucy. She got that last one from Rod’s high school friends, who would come over and marvel at her zip. “She kind of lived up to that with her energy and whit,” Rod said. Marion’s sense of humour could best be described as “wick-

She was the disciplinarian in the family, but it typically consisted of threatening “wait until your father gets home”, Rod recalled. Gary was the musical one in the

family, something he passed onto their children. But nothing rubbed off onto Marion. “The only thing she could play was the radio,” Rod said with a laugh. She did, however, pass down her sense of humour to him, he said. Cooking may also have not been her forte. Marion was known to cook something the family called “gunge”, which was a stir fry/stew concoction of meat, vegetables and gravy served on rice. “My mother knew how to burn a good piece of meat,” Rod said, adding with a laugh, “I’ve gone to the sushi side.”

Marion met Gary, most likely at high school in Stouffville during the 1940s, according to Rod. Gary was a couple of years younger than Marion. “Lifelong in love, that’s for sure because she never remarried,” Rod said. In the 1960s, they bought a 20-acre piece of land in Mount Albert where Gary built his dream home. “We used to call her a tough old bird,” Rod said of his mother’s feistiness and fierce independence. “She liked her beer now and again. A beer and cigarette was her shtick,” Rod said, adding for reasons only Marion knew, she enjoyed her Molson Export warm from the hall closet. Marion was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2011. It claimed the lives of one of her brothers and a sister. “From an energetic, feisty old bird, she was like the Energizer Bunny but it stole her energy and mind,” according to Rod. Before it stole her mind, Marion made a directive to her family about her funeral. There wasn’t going to be one. Secondly, upon her death, that 1972 bottle of Dewars’ scotch she had in the house was to be “opened and drunk at my demise”. Marion died April 12 from complications of respiratory failure courtesy of Alzheimer’s disease. She was 86. On May 30, about 30 friends and family gathered, informally, to honour Marion, which was when they cracked open the 43-year-old bottle of scotch. “(It) was fine, I might add,” Rod said.
