While family members shop, Pierre Stinson (left) along with Shifu Sun and grandson, Albert Jiao, watch the Rio Olympics 100m heats from the Olympic lounge at Hillcrest Mall Saturday.

Now both Rio Olympians, bronze medalist Andre De Grasse (left) and Richmond Hill’s Bolade Ajomale showed huge talent in 2012 York Region track competitions.

Shoppers cheer on athletes at mall’s Olympic lounge By Michael Hayakawa

How can you bring a country together to celebrate? Hillcrest Mall might have an answer — at least while the 2016 Summer Olympics are going on in Rio de Janeiro. The Richmond Hill mall has set up an Olympic lounge just outside of the Hudson’s Bay store, which is an official retail outlet for Canadian Olympic apparel. Yhe lounge is comprised of four big screen TV monitors utilizing the CBC telecast of the Games around a perimeter with comfortable sofas in the middle. Lisa Resnic, Hillcrest Mall marketing director, noted the Olympic viewing louonge is not only offered at at their shopping centre, but also at other Oxford Properties locations in the province, including Scarborough Town Centre,

Yorkdale Mall and Square One in Mississauga, as examples. While the 2016 Games are just at the midway point, she said the response to the lounge has been positive. “We started when the Opening Ceremonies took place last Friday and there’s been a steady flow of onlookers through the entire week,” she said. “It’s been popular. We’re happy with it and CBC’s mandate in televising the Olympics is to get through to as many viewers as possible and I think we’ve helped.” As part of the Olympic festivities at Hillcrest, Canadian ice dancing competitor and Markham resident Paul Poirier was on hand to sign autographs Saturday. A former competitor at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver when he skated with Aurora resident Vanessa Crone, Poirier is currently skating with Piper Gilles and finished

eighth at this year’s world championships. When he’s not on the ice, Poirier has lent some of his downtime to Can Fund, an organization that assists aspiring Canadian amateur athletes with bursary funding. “I applied for funding before I went to the Vancouver Games and received assistance,” he recalled. “It was a blessing and I’ve become more involved with them by serving as a liaison with other athletes.” Poirier said he’s been watching as much of the 2016 Summer Games as time permits. While his competitive season does not begin until September, he said he and his partner are in training in preparation for the upcoming campaign, one they hope will inch them closer toward being medal contenders when the 2018 Winter Games take place in See ‘WE’RE PROUD’, page 27.

$2.5 M investment helps 50 food projects sprout in York A $2.5-million investment by the federal and provincial governments is helping to sprout 50 food and agricultural-related projects in York Region. The funding, through a program called Growing Forward 2, is aimed at improving innovation, competitiveness and market development in Canada’s agri-food and agriproducts sector.

The Thornhill riding will receive the bulk of the funding, at more than $1.4 million. York-Simcoe is receiving $484,335, Richmond Hill is getting $252,746 and Oak Ridges-Markham’s share will be $132,640. Meanwhile, Newmarket-Aurora is receiving $117,915, Vaughan is getting $79,219 and Markham-Unionville’s share is $77,064. York’s MPPs praised the investment.

“By making strategic investments in food and beverage processing companies in our local communities, we are strengthening our agri-food sector, creating jobs in our communities and growing Ontario’s economy all at once,” Oak Ridges-Markham MPP Helena Jaczek said in a statement. The funding will boost market opportunities in York Region, Richmond Hill MPP Reza

Moridi said. The funding will add jobs and boost a growing industry, Newmarket-Aurora MPP Chris Ballard added. Launched in 2013, the program has seen the federal and provincial governments invest more than $44 million in almost 850 projects across Canada. - Lisa Queen

Rally For The Cure, a unique “wheels and wings” event, is gearing up for the seventh annual fun fundraiser to be held Sept. 11 at Markham’s Buttonville Airport. It’s an air and car rally with an urban treasure hunt theme and there is nothing else like it in Canada open to the public. It’s a fundraiser for those who suffer from Ewing sarcoma, and just as with many Canadians, I had never heard of the aggressive cancer that strikes mostly children and young adults, until it hit my son Reid, just 17. A Richmond Hill student, he endured ankle pain for a number of years plus many doctor visits before the cause was found. The pain worsened over time and eventually tumours were discovered in his ankle, sinus cavity, rib cavity and pelvis. We expected doctors to tell us there would be a cure, but that was not the case. A high school student at Bayview Secondary, Reid had dreamed of becoming a pilot in the Canadian Air Force and was in the application process when he lost his battle with Ewing sarcoma in November of 2007 at the age of 19. Though that dream was not realized, he was able to become a pilot through his

uReport job at Buttonville Municipal Airport on 16th Avenue. With no background in healthcare, I decided to start the Ewing Cancer Foundation of Canada with my son before he died, to both educate Canadians and fundraise for research to help other sufferers. Less than five years later, with more than a quarter million dollars raised, the Ewings Cancer Foundation of Canada is a registered charitable organization and helping to fund research into the cause and treatment of this form of cancer. The foundation is currently funding its third Ewing sarcoma specific research grant. I hope this is an inspiring story not just about a rare cancer, but about a mother’s passion and dedication to her son, leading a large community of survivors and parents who lost their children to work together to effect change. The planes and cars theme brings together Reid’s passion for planes and Breakfast Television’s Frankie Ferragine’s brother’s passion for cars. Tony Ferragine was the brother and best friend of CP 24’s gardening expert,

“Frankie Flowers”. Tony died of Ewing sarcoma at age 22 and Frank has been an honorary board member of the foundation since its inception in 2008. On Sept. 11, cars and planes will start their routes simultaneously – cars from York Region and the Greater Toronto Area start off from Richmond Hill, while planes start from six participating municipal airports in southern Ontario. Teams of a driver and navigator are given instructions and a rally route to follow, finishing the rally at Buttonville Airport, where there is an awards ceremony, silent auction, live music, guest speakers and a barbecue lunch. Luxury and specialty cars are on display, along with unique airplanes. Through the rally I know my son’s legacy lives on and I believe he would be thrilled to know Ewing sarcoma research is helping others now and in the future. More information on Rally For The Cure can be found at www.rallyforthecure.ca - Tina Pernica is the mother of high school student Reid Pernica, who passed away at age 19, and the founder of the Ewing Cancer Foundation of Canada.

Find out about Blue Dot movement at Richmond Hill MPP’s barbecue If you’d like to know more about the Blue Dot environmental organization, head to MPP Reza Moridi’s Summer Barbecue this Sunday. Blue Dot volunteers will have a display at the Richmond Hill MPP’s annual community event at the Richmond Green Sports Complex, 1300 Elgin Mills Rd. E. between noon and 3 p.m. Passionate representatives of Blue Dot will encourage residents to learn more about the current provincial review of the Environmental Bill of Rights and offer their opinions. Currently, the Ontario government is reviewing its Environmental Bill of Rights for the first time in more than 20 years. “Working together we can convince the Ontario government to enact strong legislation to protect the right to a healthy environment and compel our federal government to do the same,” explained Cheryl Lewandowski, York Region Blue Dot volunteer and a resident of Richmond Hill. More than 100 countries around the world

uReport have a right to a healthy environment written in their constitutions, she points out, but Canada does not. “The word ‘environment’ does not appear once in our Constitution. We want to change that!” said Lewandowski. Blue Dot is a grassroots movement that wants to see clean air, clean water, safe food, a healthy climate and a say in the decisions that affect our health and well-being recognized at every level

of government. Inspired by Canadian environmentalist David Suzuki, volunteers across the country are mobilizing to protect the people and places they love, explained Lewandowski, crediting the Town of Richmond Hill for signing a declaration for a healthy environment in March of 2015. For more information, go to http://action2.davidsuzuki. org/ontario-ebr-review or go to www.Bluedot.ca to join the movement. You can also go to Facebook www.facebook.com/ BlueDotRH

Call out superficial remarks about women athletes

Anthem changes a tribute

U

ntil Markham phenomenon Andre De Grasse ran into our TV screens and onto the Olympic podium alongside the world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt, all the medals won by Canadians were earned by women. Over and over again, sportscasters — usually male — referred with admiration, but some amazement, to the fact that all the medal winners until Sunday night’s marquee 100-meter event were female. It made me think of a media campaign, which started in Toronto, New York City and Los Angeles just before the Olympic Games began, to “call out” or shine an unfavourable spotlight on media commentary that judges female athletes on their appearance, rather than on their skills. A Dove #MyBeautyMySay campaign holds the premise that all too often, female athletes are featured in sports magazines and news stories in passive poses, glamourized and sexualized, while male athletes are portrayed in action-oriented ways emphasizing their skills. It further hypothesizes that too often media commentators focus on the looks of female athletes and on appearance rather than achievements. An interactive billboard campaign launched July 26 at YongeDundas Square in Toronto, along with other key U.S. cities, asking people to “call out” or aim negative Tweets at media outlets or commentators which belittle women athletes. Campaign organizers do credit Canadian media with being far more positive in their views and commentary on women athletes, but said such is not always the case with other media globally. As part of their rationale for the campaign, Dove and Unilever pointed out that eight in 10 (81 per cent) of Canadian women wish the media did a better job of portraying women with diverse physical appearance, and of varying ages, races, shapes and sizes. But then came the Olympic

Marney Beck Games in Rio. And onto the world stage burst a group of talented, courageous and skilled athletes — swimmers, such as triple-threat Penny Oleksiak and synchro duo Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion, rowers Lindsay Jennerich and Patricia Obee, our bronze team of women pursuit cyclists, the entire women’s rugby team and — of course — our own golden trampolinist Rosie MacLennan. Who would dare write, or Tweet or Facebook about these medalwinning athletes by focusing only on their appearance, their makeup, or their clothing? Sadly, sometimes media representatives in their articles and more often their readers in social media posts do consider appearance or clothing or other superficial factors. We all know that online commentators, especially, can be cruel and cutting — even vicious. Tessa Virtue, Canadian ice dancing champion, is part of the #MyBeautyMySay campaign. She admits that she’s been the target of mean-spirited comments calling out for her to “be thinner” or “don’t eat” to be the best she can be in a sport that combines artistry with athletic skills. “Let’s face it, all women are judged too often on their looks instead of their accomplishments,” states Virtue. So while it’s hard to imagine that any online discussion about our medal-winning athletes would focus on their physical attributes, their swimsuits, hair or overall looks, if you see any derogatory comments aimed at our women Olympians, you’re invited to call them out at #MyBeautyMySay.

Re: Anthem changes waste, letter by Wally Cheung, Aug. 11. After reading Mr. Cheung’s letter to the editor, I have to say that I am in total agreement with his premise of not modifying a classic piece of poetry, but totally in disagreement with his conclusion that O Canada should be made gender neutral. Why? For the simple reason that the original lyrics (written and first sung in 1908, only the music was written in 1880) used the word “us”. This was changed to “sons” in 1914 to pay homage to soldiers fighting in the First World War. Our recent change back to “us” pays tribute to both of these: a return to an original word, and it still pays homage to our soldiers who are now both women and men. Though, if you want to

www.yorkregion.com

be picky, “in all of us command” should be “thou dost in us command”.

Provide more subway options Re: You can help bring subway to York, July 7. Finally, we’re gaining visibility for the much-needed expansion of the subway into Richmond Hill. However, this is only going to exacerbate the current overcrowding on Line 1: by the time trains arrive at Finch, they will already be full, if not packed. I’d suggest a better approach would be to extend into Richmond Hill AND loop over to join the Downsview subway extension. That way riders can take the appropriate route to downtown destinations. This would ease congestion at the Line 1 and Line 2 intersection (Line 1? Line 2? are yet more examples of

SEND A LETTER: Email your letters to the editor to mbeck@yrmg.com JOIN CONVERSATION: Be the first to comment at yorkregion.com creative thinking in the ivory towers of bureaucracy) and provide options to riders. If the Yonge Street leg of the subway has a problem, riders could use the Spadina/Downsview leg. Back home, the Circle Line on “The Tube” provided just that option, so this is not a new solution, just an old one applied to an existing and growing transportation crisis. Wake up, people! Think long term....

There are still spaces left in next week’s golf tournament to benefit Mothers Against Drunk Driving (madd) Canada’s York Region chapter. The third annual golf tournament, Golf Fore madd, is set for Thursday, Aug. 25. Golf Fore madd is a fun fundraiser to raise money to go directly towards the support of madd’s mission “to stop impaired driving and support victims of this violent crime”. The tourney will be held at Redcrest Golf Course at 17700 Keele St. in King, just west of Newmarket. Groups of four golfers will play 18 holes starting at 8 a.m. on one of Canada’s top golf courses. Each hole is sponsored by a different company with many prizes to be won. Continental breakfast, green fees, shared carts, free use of the driving range, buffet lunch and prizes, will all be included with

registration. Cost for a foursome is $500; an individual can play for $125. A grassroots organization, madd Canada is committed to stopping impaired driving and supporting the victims of violent crime. It includes not only mothers, but fathers, friends, business professionals, experts in the anti-impaired driving field, and concerned citizens who want to make a difference in the fight against impaired driving.

One feature that differentiates Subaru from other manufacturers is that every one of their vehicles, with the exception of the BRZ coupe, comes standard with all-wheel drive. To many buyers, particularly those here in Canada, all-wheel drive is what sells them on a Subaru, that and the safety record that the Japanese firm has earned over the years. These factors have spawned a group of Subaru buyers who have tremendous brand loyalty. So it comes as no surprise that the compact Subaru Impreza is holding its own sales-wise in the face of a dramatic shift away from small cars to crossovers. As an example, the Impreza sold 1,133 units in June of this year, an increase of 8.7 per cent over the same month last year. Other compacts like the Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra and the Nissan Sentra also enjoyed sales increases during the month, but stalwarts such as the Chevrolet Cruze, Ford Focus, Mazda3 and even the Toyota Corolla saw their num-

bers decrease, some dramatically. What is interesting about Subaru is how the Japanese automaker has been able to spin so many models off the same platform. For example, the Impreza is available in both four- and five-door variants and for high-performance fans, WRX and WRX STi models. In addition, the small Crosstrek crossover is also based on the Impreza platform. In short, the Impreza has a model for all needs and tastes. For this test, we sampled the fourdoor Impreza sedan, dressed in a brilliant, rich Dark Blue Pearl paint colour, new for 2016. Ours was a Limited model with Technology Package, the top of four trim levels, and priced at $29,495 plus $1,595 freight and PDI. All Imprezas come with a 2.0-litre Boxer four-cylinder engine making 148 hp and 145 lb/ft of torque, combined with either a five-speed manual transmission or a continuous variable transmission (CVT) automatic.

Road test: 2016 Impreza an impressive vehicle

The Subaru Impreza is the only compact sedan with all-wheel drive as standard fare. All are Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV) rated, meaning they have significant smog-reducing benefits and zero evaporative emissions. The base four-door Impreza is the 2.0i, starting at $19,995 with a five-speed manual transmission (Lineartronic CVT

adds $1,300), 15-inch steel wheels, rearview camera and 6.2-in infotainment system. The 2.0i Touring four-door ($21,695) adds 16-in aluminum alloy wheels, dual front heated seats, auto on-off headlights and windshield wiper de-icer

among other features. Moving up to the Impreza 2.0i Sport ($23,895 or $26,395 with Technology Option) brings 17-in alloys, fog lights, roofline spoiler, power tilt/sliding glass sunroof and aluminum pedals. Continued on page 12

The interior is conservative, yet functional. Shown here is the Limited model with leather upholstery. well finished with decent legroom front and rear and secondrow seats that fold flat. The Impreza may not be as much of a driver’s car as the Mazda3, but standard all-wheel drive is a major selling feature, particularly in areas that experience severe winter weather. Performance with the CVT is average at best with just enough horses under the hood to handle most road situations. The ride and handling is good, although engine noise is a bit raspy on hard acceleration and there is some whine from the transmission until the car reaches cruise speed. Safety is another area where the Impreza excels, particularly with the higher-end models that

feature Subaru’s Eyesight driver assistance package. Those vehicles get a Top Safety Pick + from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the U.S. The standard rear view camera is another welcome safety feature. All in all, the Impreza is a solid choice for buyers in the compact segment. Although priced higher than much of the competition in an extremely competitive part of the market, the Impreza is the only car in its class with standard all-wheel drive. If that’s an important feature for a would-be buyer, then the Impreza should be at the top of the list for consideration.

FOCUS SE The 2017 Mazda3 will come standard with G-Vectoring Control.

2017 Mazda3 fitted with GVectoring Control Mazda has announced the 2017 Mazda3 with notable improvements in refinement, packaging and handling. The 2017 Mazda3’s exterior tweaks are subtle, but effectively elevate the vehicle’s KODO—Soul of Motion design, adding a bolder grille, available LED headlights and tail lights, and a redesigned rear bumper on five-door models that extends an upscale, monochromatic look to the lower valences. The new Mazda3 will come standard with G-Vectoring Control (GVC), an allnew, Mazda-exclusive technology that uses the engine in conjunction with the steering, throttle inputs and suspension to provide sharper chassis control, leading to a need for fewer steering corrections and greater driver- and passengerconfidence. Much as Mazda3’s already engaging steering has improved with GVC, Mazda’s engineers have upped the ante with improved NVH damping, too. The 2017 Mazda3 is a substantial 3dB quieter going 40 km/h over rough roads, thanks to tighter body gaps, improved sound insulation and redesigned weather stripping versus its 2016 predecessor. With the 2017 updates also comes the adoption of available Advanced Blind Spot Monitoring and Traffic Sign Recognition as well as a new, full-colour Active Driving Display. These safety features complement Mazda3’s i-Activsense suite, which includes Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Mazda Radar Cruise Control, Smart City Brake Support and Smart Brake Support for highway speeds. The 2017 Mazda3 arrives in dealers in September, with pricing and packing to be announced closer to its on-sale date.

Neighbour troubled by deteriorating homes By KIM ZARZOUR

kzarzour@yrmg.com

Glen Wedlock watched the rain pour down on his neighbour’s patched roof this week and his heart sank. It sank the same way in 2014, when he heard the porch collapse on the house next door. This is not a third-world community nor a downtrodden ghetto. It is, Wedlock points out, the village of Richmond Hill, in a neighbourhood filled with million-dollar homes. But you wouldn’t know it to look at the houses next door, he says, where the garage and porch deteriorate, and tarps and plastic may be all that’s keeping the family inside dry.

“I’ve been watching the roof on that one for a long while,” Wedlock says, referring to 119 Church St. S. “Two years ago, I contacted the town to complain about holes in the roof. The landlord then put plastic to cover it.” He questioned the town’s approval of plastic patchwork repairs, but it remained in place. With a Special Weather Statement issued Tuesday, warning of torrential rainfall, he felt compelled to do more. Early this week, Wedlock, a resident in a nearby home for the past 26 years, sent an email to town councilors seeking their help. “We are lucky to live in a neighbourhood where the residents help each other in various ways,” he wrote. See TENANT, page 15.

“Unfortunately, on this issue we are powerless and require your help. “This residence is occupied by a multigenerational family who are new to the country. They are friendly and do their best to keep the house maintained. People who live under these circumstances are often afraid to speak up to their landlord.”

‘People who live under these circumstances are often afraid to speak up to their landlord,’ says concerned neighbour. Wedlock says the property — and both neighbouring homes falling into disrepair — are part of a development project approved more than two years ago. A site plan for the so-called Rosetown Suites has not yet been submitted and construction could be years away, he says. The town has turned a blind eye to the matter in the past, he says. “I’m hoping someone who receives this email will stand up for the little guy.” Wedlock wonders how the tenants, who include “grandchildren and grandparents and a nice couple trying to do their best”, are coping with this week’s heavy rains. “This prosperous Richmond Hill developer and his family will go home tonight to a safe, dry home they can be proud of. All I’m asking is that the developer provide the same to his tenants.” That landlord, developer Dean Artenosi, begs to differ. The president of Arten Development Group and vice president of operations at Coldwell Banker says he is the victim here, being harassed by a “spiteful man who has been opposing my development for years”. When he learned that Wedlock had distributed photographs of the roof, he contacted

The Liberal by phone and patched through his tenant — whom he pays to maintain the properties — on a conference call. “You’re happy here, right?” he asked the man who has lived in the home for two years. “Do you have any problems with the place? Did you ever contact the town to complain?” His tenant, Magnolito Cresencia, responded quickly, saying he is indeed happy with the home, has no problems and has never complained to the town. “You see?” Artenosi said. “I have a very, very good relationship with my tenants. We tarped the roof … because next year it [the house] will be torn down. But it does not leak. “That’s the whole point of redevelopment. To actually make an improvement to the community .... He [Wedlock] is a complete bully… calling the bylaw officers weekly, when his own roof shingles have been lifting, and I have never called to complain about him.”

Developer says he is being harassed by ‘spiteful man who has been opposing my development for years’. Artenosi offered to share photos of Wedlock’s roof, but learned the lifting shingles had been repaired a couple of weeks ago. “It was a calculated move on his part,” he added. Ana Bassios, the town’s commissioner of planning and regulatory services, said that until Wedlock’s email was forwarded to the town by members of council Tuesday morning, staff had received no recent complaints about the property standards at the address. “I have asked staff to open a file on this property and initiate an investigation. We shall also reach out to the tenants.” Tom Muench, the local Ward 2 councillor, said he is aware of longstanding issues with the property and that the developer has an application in to the town.

Unionized postal workers fearing lockout stage picket By Lisa Queen

lqueen@yrmg.com

A dozen unionized Canada Post workers held an information picket outside a Richmond Hill post office Friday morning. About a dozen workers wearing T-shirts with slogans such as “Keep calm and support CUPW” and “Keep your hands off the public’s post office” passed out flyers and flew flags at the picket at Yonge Street and Beresford Drive. “We’re here today because Canada Post wants to close down 493 retail counters across the country and we feel this is a target for one of them,” Derek Richmond, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers’ Ontario region coordinator, said. The union and Canada Post had been embroiled in an escalating and public labour battle this year as they attempt to negotiate a

new contract. The issue has slipped off the public’s radar screen in recent weeks as both sides turned down the rhetoric as part of a cooling off period as negotiations continue. But while some minor items have been resolved, overall bargaining does not appear to be proceding well, Mike Duquette, president of the Scarborough union local, which includes York Region, said. He fears Canada Post could lock out unionized workers as soon as the end of August. But Canada Post spokesperson Mouktar Abdillahi remains committed to negotiating a settlement with the union. Meanwhile, York Region’s Liberal MPs will hold a town hall meeting on the future of Canada Post today, Aug. 18 at the regional headquarters in Newmarket at 17250 Yonge at 7 p.m.

Career fair will connect businesses, skilled professionals Do you have a local business with positions to fill? The Town of Richmond Hill is holding a career fair next month to help you attract talented employees who live nearby. The event, set for Sept. 22 at the Richmond Hill Country Club, aims help local businesses fill positions with local talent and help residents find employment close to home. It’s a win-win situation, said Gwen Manderson, the town’s director of strategic initiatives. Manderson said the town

is looking for companies that need to fill positions that have growth and development opportunities. Local businesses will have access to a large number of candidates and be able to connect, network and assess if there is a good fit. “This is a unique opportunity for employers to meet possible candidates who could grow with their company,” she said. “Employers also have an opportunity to increase awareness about their company and brand as well as meet other employers in the community.” Town organizers hope to

have the companies signed up by Aug. 26 in order to promote them and the positions they have available. Companies that have registered so far include emergiTEL, Global Financial, Hibar, Laipac Technology, Living Assistance Services, N-Dimension and Sun Life Financial. The event is free and is set for Thursday, Sept. 22 at the Richmond Hill Country Club, 8905 Bathurst St., from 2 to 8 p.m.

Rare raccoon may have met sad fate Wondering what happened to that rare albino raccoon spotted in Richmond Hill at the end of July? Sadly, animal-lover Paula Gianasi reports that the white raccoon she first spotted in her backyard has most likely met a sad fate. A message on her phone last Friday from a woman she doesn’t know, told her that animal control workers spotted a white raccoon at the end of a driveway — “alive but not moving” — and they picked it up. The message from the woman, who lives on Cooperage Crescent in the same Yonge/Brookside/Elgin Mills Road neighbourhood, noted the caller is an animal lover, “just like me,” commented

uReport Gianasi. “She read The Liberal article and decided to call me to let me know what had happened.” Gianasi said she’s sad that the little raccoon visitor, who she nicknamed “Neige,” has met an early demise. “It’s sad, but I won’t be looking out for him anymore, now that I know,” said Gianasi, although she said she has also been told by another source that the animal collected was actually an opossum, not a white raccoon. After first sending in a photo of her backyard visitor

to The Liberal and mistaking the animal for an opossum, Gianasi learned via social media that it was an albino raccoon. Such raccoons are usually born blind and deaf, so usually don’t live long in the wild. The story was picked up by other media and elicited a great deal of interest online at yorkregion.com.

It’s hard to overestimate the impact police officers can have in their community when they truly know the place and people. Monday night, when one “dialed in” young officer saw something he deemed suspicious, he took a chance and made us all safer in the meanwhile. It was shortly after 11 p.m. when the constable, whose name was not released by the service, was on general patrol near the Richmond Hill Inn, on Yonge Street, just north of Gamble Road. “This officer is very familiar with the community and aware of what’s going on,” said York Regional Police Det. Sgt. Heather McVicar. “He’s very young, but one of the best we have, to be honest with you.” A car driving suspiciously in the parking lot got the attention of the young officer, who’s only been with the force just shy of two years. As the officer approached the vehicle, one of the occupants fled

on foot, while the driver remained inside. Once the investigation was complete, substances believed to be marijuana, cocaine and crack-cocaine were found, along with about $3,500 in cash. What McVicar said made the biggest difference to all of our safety was that a loaded nine millimetre handgun that was located. “Yes, he stood the risk of something going wrong in a situation like that, but he took precautions and is very well trained,” McVicar said of the constable. “You’re in the red-zone and ready for something to go sideways, but this is our job, and as a result of that, everyone is a little safer now.” Jaiden Jackson, 26, of Ajax has been charged with firearm and drug offences. He will attend court on Aug. 18 to face these charges. Anyone with information about the whereabouts of the other man is asked to call police at 1-866-8765423, ext. 7241.

Good hearing but trouble with conversation? This improvement in hearing can be achieved for some clients through the new Phonak Audéo V’s hearing aids. This cutting-edge hearing technology comes in a miniature casing that can significantly enhance the user’s ability to hear speech in company. The hearing aids attune to the person you are speaking to and can also recognize if ambient noise increases in the background.

NS

A lot of people have trouble catching what people say, especially in group situations, despite having good hearing. What a lot of people don’t know is that this may be caused by damage to the so-called motor or amplifier function of special cells in the ear. A new type of hearing aid can help balance this out. A great many people have difficulty hearing others clearly on a daily basis. Bad acoustics, unclear pronunciation, background noise and music often make it challenging to catch what people say. This results in them having to repeatedly ask questions, straining to hear and perhaps increasingly avoiding discussions in large groups. As mentioned earlier, this may be caused by malfunctions in special cells in the ear. According to a theory proposed by hearing researchers, “motor cells” are a type of hair cell responsible for amplifying quiet sounds. They vibrate up to 20,000 times per second. If these hair cells do not work properly then quiet sounds are no longer naturally

Hair cells in the ear move very rapidly and can act as an amplifier or dampener. If these cells are damaged, they can no longer properly amplify speech and dampen loud noises. amplified in the ear and loud sounds no longer dampened. This leads to more difficulty in hearing what is said in a lot of situations. If the hair cells have been damaged by noise or blood circulation problems, hearing aids that amplify quiet speech and dampen loud ambient noise can be a good solution for most people.

Sears Hearing Centre is currently looking to improve hearing for people who experience these challenges and want to try this new technology. We are particularly interested in candidates who have trouble hearing speech in the situations discussed above and can benefit from a trial to see whether they notice an improvement. Interested people can register for a free hearing evaluation and a no obligation trial of the Audéo V hearing aids by calling 1-888-771-7459.

Often touted as Canada’s band, the Tragically Hip will take the stage one last time. The last stop on their farewell tour will be in Kingston, Ont., and the CBC will broadcast the last live performance Aug. 20 starting at 8:30 p.m. With 14 albums and Junos to match, for an entire generation The Hip was part of the soundtrack of life:

1

THE LAST GOAL HE EVER SCORED: Here are some places where you can watch the Tragically Hip: A National Celebration in York Region: The ROC and GEM Theatre in Georgina, Town Park in Aurora, Riverwalk Commons, Newmarket, The Duchess of Markham in Markham, Cosmo Music and Rainbow Cinemas in Richmond Hill, The Lion of Stouffville and the Civic Centre Resource Library in Vaughan.

THE LESS YOU NEED TO KNOW: If staying home to watch the CBC’s presentation of the Tragically Hip: A National Celebration, be sure to serve up some Hip inspired dishes paired with a Fully Completely red or Ahead By a Century white wine. Serve up orzo with mushrooms, onions and Italian sausage – a favourite of brand frontman Gord Downie. Together with Stoney Ridge Estate Winery, the band co-created Fully Completely, a grand reserve 2013 vintage red featuring a replica of the famed album cover as the bottle label. QUICKLY, SOMETHING FAMILIAR: Band frontman Gord Downie played goal for the Amherstview major bantam team. In the provincial championship game, Amherstview was up 5-0 going into the third period. Downie — whose family was at the game — let in six goals in less than 10 minutes. After being pulled from net, the team went on to win the championship 7-6. Downie didn’t play goal again until he was in his 30s.

IT WAS IN BOBCAYGEON: A Museum After Dark is an online directory dedicated to people, places and things found in Tragically Hip songs, with close to 350 lyric references. Some of the places mentioned in Hip lyrics include: Algonquin Park, Antarctica, Berlin, Copenhagen and the Rio Grande River.

Vaughan - According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11

items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That’s why it’s critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre-inspection yourself if you know what you’re looking for, and knowing what you’re looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones.

South Korea. “I’ve been trying to watch as much of the [Rio] Olympics as possible. I’m passionate about the Olympic movement. It’s been cool and I’ve enjoyed the Games so far. I like a lot of the events, especially the artistic sports because it’s similar to what Piper and I do. Poirier said he’s still gets excited watching Canada’s Olympians compete, and an athlete himself, he has an appreciation of what they are going through during the Games. “To see them do what they do is amazing. lot of stuff that goes on behind the scenes,” he said. Resnic hopes another Olympic lounge can be set up at Hillcrest for the 2018 Winter Games to serve as a rallying point and spur on Canada’s winter performers. “It’s great to be a part of (the Olympic spirit) and we’re proud — anything that can bring a nation together, that’s great,” she said.

Teachers excited by success of former student By Michael Hayakawa

mhayakawa@yrmg.com

Like a good number of Canadians, Liana Williams, Deanna Heron and Anton Skerritt were glued to their TV sets watching the 2016 Summer Olympics when the men’s 100-metre final featuring 21-year-old Markham resident Andre De Grasse and two-time defending gold medallist Usain Bolt of Jamaica took place in Rio

de Janeiro Sunday evening. For Williams, Heron and Skerritt, the big race had some added significance from a personal perspective. Being longtime teachers and track and field coaches at Milliken Mills High School, Williams and Skerritt had the good fortune of mentoring De Grasse on the school’s track and field team when he first took up the sport as a Grade

11 student and through his Grade 12 year. Heron was a vice-principal at Milliken Mills during the days De Grasse was enrolled there. While De Grasse ran his way to bronze with a personal best time of 9.91 seconds to become the first male athlete for Canada to reach the medal podium at the 2016

‘One of us,’ says proud high school coach of De Grasse From page 27.

Summer Games, Williams, Heron and Skerritt could not have been happier with what their former pupil had accomplished in his Olympic debut that saw Bolt claim his third straight 100m Olympic gold. “It was great, it was exciting,” said Williams, who watched the race with her parents. “It was amazing and just incredible to see him do so well.” A former 400m and 4 x 400m runner for Canada at the 1988 Olympics, Skerrett was equally elated. “It was fantastic. You know what? I was excited for him and his mom (Beverly). She’s worked a lot with him.” “Like Liana, I’m still giddy from Sunday’s excitement,” added Heron. “I sent Liana congratulatory messages after the race, as I did last year after Andre’s phenomenal races at the Pan Am Games and when Liana sent me a photo and article featuring Andre’s breakout 100m and 200m NCAA performances.” What caught Heron’s attention once the race concluded was seeing Bolt praise De Grasse and hinting he could be heir to the 100m throne once he hangs up his spikes. “It made me think back to my very first meeting with Andre and his family when I was at Milliken Mills when he wasn’t exactly sure what he wanted to study but was open to suggestions. “We (educators) can never know the full

magnitude of greatness that lies within our students; it is our privilege to get to support and bear witness to their resilience,” she said. Acknowledging her heart rate spiked in the moments leading up to and during the final race, Williams could not help but to reflect on how De Grasse has progressed so rapidly in a sport he literally took up just four years ago. Recalling De Grasse did not have the proper track apparel when he first took up the sport in basketball shoes and shorts as that sport was his first love, Williams said they took De Grasse to the Running Free retail outlet in Markham and within 15 minutes, purchased proper track spikes and shorts for him. Like Williams, Skerrett said he felt the butterflies, almost similar to when he competed for Canada, as De Grasse was ready to embark on his 100m final run. “He’s one of us,” Skerrett proudly said in noting De Grasse is part of the Milliken Mills High School’s extended family. “It’s not like he’s my son, but it feels like he’s my nephew. His mom is from Trinidad and Tobago like me and I got to know him and his mom well. “I’ve been in contact with him since his junior college days (in Kansas) and told him to keep up the good work. What he’s done in such a short time is nothing short of amazing,” Skerrett said.
