‘Canada a dream’ say grateful Syrian families BY KIM ZARZOUR
kzarzour@yrmg.com
“You are good people. Good people!” Yasin can’t speak English yet, but this is one message he can make understood. The rest is obvious from his body language — his smile and tears, the locking of eyes, clutching of hands and gripping, silent hugs. This father and grandfather — finally safe and surrounded by some, not all, of his family — is overwhelmed with gratitude and he wants Richmond Hill and all of Canada to know. It is pandemonium right now in the family dining room of the Richmond Hill Barry home, with three Syrian refugee families — grandparents, two sets of young parents, six children under 10 and several Canadian host families — all laughing, crying, playing and chattering in English and Arabic. Yasin sits in the middle, absorbing the bittersweet goodness of it all, and occasionally, breaking down in quiet tears. Jim Barry, whose home this is, places his arm around him and the two older men share a quiet moment of understanding. ***** They weren’t entirely sure what they were getting into when they signed on for this adventure, but a group of Richmond Hill residents, friends and family knew
one thing: they were all in — and it was time to act. “I knew I just couldn’t walk away from this. I can’t not do it.” Frances Barry heard the calls for help for refugees, realized it was the perfect juxtaposition of “need, desire and opportunity” and quickly got to work gathering a group of engaged and dynamic people to fundraise the $35,000 for a family fleeing war-torn Syria. Working with non-profit Humanity First, the group learned their sponsorship would be fasttracked to bring extended family to the area as support for a mom and five kids newly arrived in nearby Unionville. On Monday night, it all came together, with three families reuniting and joining the mother who arrived here last month. And now they are here in her parents, Jim and Mary Barry’s, Richmond Hill home, discovering Canada and rediscovering each other again after untold trauma in their beleaguered homeland. Frances has just put in a 12-hour night nursing shift at the Hospital for Sick Children, but it doesn’t seem to slow her down as she helps chauffeur the newcomers to appointments at the local STAFF PHOTO/STEVE SOMERVILLE Welcome Centre. Her parents have opened their home to one of the families — a Yasin, right, fights to control his emotions and convey to host Jim Barry, mom, dad, two young girls and a whose family has taken in Yasin’s extended family from Syria, how grateful baby boy. he is for their warm welcome to Richmond Hill and Canada.
