Illegal gambling at Vaughan café where 2 killed, York Regional police say

Vaughan’s Moka Café had been the site of an illegal gaming house before two people were shot to death and two others were seriously wounded during a brazen attack, according to police.

Despite this assertion, officers have yet to determine if the violence that left Vaughan residents Maria

Voci, 47, and Christopher DeSimone, 24, dead was related to gambling.

A third victim, well known Woodbridge business owner Rocco Di Paola, is expected to survive, while the fourth victim, whose identity is being protected, is also recovering.

The incident occurred early on June 24 after a masked gunman walked into the cafe and opened fire.

Since the shooting, police have located the stolen Nissan Versa used

Turner: Transportation has been stated as the No. 1 issue of priority to York Region residents for many, many, many years. It’s really important, as we look at major milestones like our transportation master plan, that we really examine opportunities to really get it right. And getting it right means where do we spend our emphasis and our focus with respect to the dollars that need to be spent to improve our roads and our transit systems and create great places for people to walk and have mobility, including on their bicycles. So, that’s why a task force was created, because it’s really important to York Region residents and their quality of life.

May: I think the other aspect is, I think it’s very timely now for this task force because there is an unparalleled level of investment in transportation in the GTA, not only with the things under construction in York Region, our rapid bus transit and the Spadina subway extension, but also all the RER (rapid express rail, which is electrification of the GO train lines allowing for 15-minute service) investment with Metrolinx.

Q:

Why do we need all this?

Are we choking on our own congestion?

May: We identified in the first transportation master plan that the region did, which was approved in 2002, we strongly identified that we couldn’t widen enough roads in York Region to accommodate all the future travel just in cars. There just wasn’t enough roads to widen and not enough property. There would just have to be too many lanes on these arterial roads, so transit was the only way we were going to achieve the future need for travel in a sustainable manner. The two rapid way lanes in the middle of the road have more capacity to move people than the three lanes in each direction, so a total of six lanes, for regular cars.

Q:

Just as a normal person, I hear Metrolinx, Viva, YRT, GO, there’s the TTC, there’s SmartTrack. How is this all working? It just seems like so much and I can’t wrap my head around it. Help me wrap my head around it.

Turner: We’ll start at the bottom and work our way up. YRT

has existed for a considerable amount of time. It was formed by putting together all of the local transit systems and creating York Region Transit. And that was done by the region putting together all these small individuals into a large regional authority. That authority is responsible for operating the dayto-day system that you see running around out there. The rapid transit corporation, which is our service that we put out there and we run the rapid transit corporation, our goal is to find funding and to build the projects and then give them to YRT, York Region Transit, to put into service and they run the local service every day on our behalf.

We have funding partners and one of the funding partners we have is Metrolinx. And Metrolinx was formed to create this umbrella regional transportation authority, to create the big picture that’s bigger than any one of our individual pictures, to put together the whole network and to determine the priorities of which pieces of that network should go ahead of the others. But (transit) is a very important, as you know, political hot potato for everyone to deal with. So, usually, you will find at election time, one of the platforms that a politician will run on is their ideas about a transit idea. So, in this case, (Toronto Mayor) John Tory came out with the idea of SmartTrack. And SmartTrack is just basically layered on top of the GO lines and adds a few more stations in the city of Toronto. But he’s been able to give it a phrase and a name and gain popularity as another way to move people around. But it happens to be the same plan with a few more stations.

May: From a transit user

perspective, when you’ve got different systems operating in the Greater Toronto Area like this, there are two aspects that make it convenient for the user. One is service integration. So, can I connect from one service to another service to get where I want to go?

And we do have service integration in York Region and in the Greater Toronto Area...The other aspect is fare integration so you have one unified fare system throughout the Greater Toronto Area and we don’t have that yet...There isn’t fare integration with the TTC…The Presto card is being implemented. Everyone in the GTA has implemented it except for the TTC and it’s in the process in the TTC. They’ve started to and it will still be a couple years before they’ve finished implementing it on the TTC. So, that makes it

In terms of integrating the fare policy, that’s more difficult and Metrolinx is working on that and it needs to be done at the Greater Toronto Area level. It’s not something York Region can do on its own.

Q:

Paint a picture of what transit will look like in five years.

Turner: In five years, we’ll have 37 kilometres of rapid transit corridors, bus rapid transit corridors, fully separated for buses to be running up and down. The Spadina subway will be open. We hope to be well into engineering for the Yonge subway because it’s another major piece of our puzzle.

And we hope to have a (BRT) corridor running up Jane Street and across Major Mack and down Don Mills, providing rapid transit but in mixed traffic and as a precursor to future separated rapid transit investment. It will be buses like the first stage of Viva where we ran in mixed traffic and the stations will be curbside.

The goal is to start it in mixed traffic and get it into its own corridor. Five years from now, you should be seeing much more

frequent service on the GO lines and then five years from then, you’re going to see electrification.

You’re going to have this whole rapid transit system of buses and subways start to be connected to the GO lines and the GO lines are going to be running up and down the corridors.

May: Metrolinx has a 10-year program to implement regional express rail, RER. These are all diesel trains right now. They’re electrifying some of the corridors, but not all of them. They’re not electrifying the Richmond Hill corridor and the Kitchener corridor past Brampton. But they are electrifying the Stouffville line and the Barrie line. I don’t expect they will have that done in five years. It will take at least 10 years to do that, but they are going to incrementally add more trains to each of the GO rail lines. Plus, they’re extending the Richmond Hill rail line. Right now, it stops just north of Major Mackenzie. They’re building a station up at Stouffville Road and another station up at Bloomington and this should be done within five years.

Q: Paint a picture of what

transit is going to look like in a quarter century.

Turner: I think the level of investment now being made will create an entirely different manner in the way people will be able to move around our community.

Right now, we truly are still a cardependent community. I would say (in) 20 to 25 years, we could truly say we will have the real opportunity to be a mobile community. A mobile community has people moving by all modes of transportation. There are people in their cars, there are people riding transit, there are people on bicycle paths. (People are) moving back and forth between all the levels of service and it will be an entirely different opportunity for mobility in the region.

May: And a fully connected rapid transit network. There are still a number of gaps in the system and we’re slowly filling in these gaps. You (will be able to) use rapid transit for all or most of your trip, not just part of it or certain people who it works for. It will be available to a broader sector of society. It will be available as a viable option to driving to work.

My visitors from Down Under

Lyme disease is not coming here; it is here

I

t’s summertime in Canada, season of barbecues, bocce, beer, baseball, bugs and bumper-to-bumper traffic.

It’s also a time to visit those you haven’t seen in a long time, or to welcome visitors from afar.

My sister, her husband and their kids are visiting from Australia (the kids are on their “winter break”) and they seem to be having a swell time.

They stopped in L.A. for a week first, going to Disney, where the happy couple met all those years ago. Back when they were both young and single and adventurous, and weren’t going to let the fact they happened to live on different continents stand in their way.

Then it was on to Canada and Niagara Falls, enjoying the sight of water yielding to the forces of gravity, something that, naturally, was on the bucket list of the young Aussies with the Canadian mom.

Of course she doesn’t sound like a Canadian mom anymore.

Her Australian accent is pretty well established at this late stage (or “lite stige”, as she would say, Aussies forgoing their “A” sounds in favour of “I”, so lake becomes like, bake becomes bike, and so on). I momentarily found my eyes casting around for a translator or English subtitles as we talked over the sound of hip-hop music at a restaurant where we all met for a big dinner, siblings, cousins, down by the ACC. (Incidentally her name is Barb, or as we called her growing up, Barbie, so moving to Australia, where “throw another shrimp on the barbie” is an everyday expression, tested her courage and sense of humour.)

The Jays game was on and I wondered if they had heard of Josh Donaldson, the third baseman who is off to the all-star game. No they had not. Don’t get a lot of Major League Baseball, or any league baseball, on TV down there. Connor McDavid, top NHL draft pick from Newmarket? Sorry, no. Likewise, hockey is not a big sport Down Under.

How about Bruce Gender?

Bernie O’Neill “You mean Caitlyn Jenner (Or as they say, “Kite-Lynn Jenna”). Oh ya, that’s on the news all the time.

And for sports? Turns out Australian Rules Football is pretty big in Australia in a way Canadian rules football (the CFL) is not so big around here.

Interestingly, some of the conversation turned to the issues that face their city, Melbourne, that sound so similar to the ones here in the GTA: traffic congestion, public transit, the skyrocketing price of homes.

So no one is immune.

My older brother and I split the huge restaurant bill, so that our visitors who were no doubt spending a lot on their trip, in part to head up north to see Grandma who is having her struggles with health and memory, wouldn’t have to worry about it, even though they insisted on paying. (I told them I can cover their share and they can pay me back later. But it’s really a ‘Greek loan’ — I don’t expect to see the money ever again.)

I wish I could have brought them up to York Region, to see all the growth and change, but they were on a tight schedule.

Meanwhile, the baggage handlers were staging a wildcat strike at the airport, the HOV lanes were backing up traffic, and rain was threatening — again.

They played it safe and stayed near the hotel so as not to miss their flight.

As I write this, they’ve visited Grandma and are in Banff, where mountains defy the forces of gravity, before their return to Australia.

I hope to visit them there someday.

Re: Lyme sufferers desperate for answers, treatment, June 18.

I was moved by Kim Zarzour’s article on Lyme disease.

As a fellow Lyme sufferer, I praise Thornhill’s Shari Allen and husband, Craig, for publicly sharing her story about Lyme disease.

Many of us quietly and informally have been raising awareness by discussing this issue with family and friends, however, it takes a lot of energy and courage to put yourself out there publicly.

It is refreshing to read an article on Lyme that is wellinformed and balanced. It is also a great benefit to our region that we now have Dr. Angela Lee who is specializing in tick-bourne illnesses. Her two mentors, Dr. McShane and Dr. Horowitz, are both highly respected U.S. Lyme-literate doctors, and many of us in Canada are patients to one of these doctors.

It is true that many in Canada are suffering from Lyme, diagnosed and undiagnosed.

Unlike Shari, I likely contracted Lyme in Canada, in Algonquin Park in 1989 (but diagnosed in 2010).

Others I know have similarly likely contracted the disease in Ontario — Peterborough, Parry Sound, Scarborough (Bluffs), just to name a few locations. It’s not coming here, it is here, and we need much more awareness and change to deal with it.

Political change has started at both the provincial and federal levels.

I spend upwards of $30,000 per year to deal with this illness, not counting lost income. I have multiple doctors — both MDs and NDs, and other therapists.

I am very lucky I have a very supportive husband and teenage children, extended family and friends; many are not so lucky.

But like our country’s ability to deal with this very serious infectious disease, I have a long way to go.

Thank you Shari and Craig Allen, your courage in moving us forward is commendable.

This article was of interest to me, as I, too, suffered greatly in the past. Like the story source, I had a long journey to find and manage the source of my jaw pain.

Among treatments mentioned are night guards, which are very helpful. You mention drugs, which can be so strong they allow you to sleep, but not able to function through your daily routine.

While permitting you to escape from the pain, drugs only mask the symptoms.

They do not treat the source of the problem.

My TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorders) has greatly improved due to the care of my chiropractor. I feel you are doing a disservice to others by not mentioning this approach.

Still need a way to entertain your children this summer? Never fear, there are still some spaces available in some summer programs and camps run by the Town of Richmond Hill.

Most programs run for a full day, all week, although some are offered half days.

Live on Location Camp is a one-week full-day program that teaches children how to make a film. They will be learning how to write a script, scout locations and by the end of the week they will be presenting a trailer to go with their original movie ideas. Spaces for the week of July 13 are still available.

Live on Location also has a Toy Stop Motion Animation theme the week of Aug. 4, where campers will learn to make their own stop animation with toys from home.

If you’re looking for a more physically active camp environment, TenTenTennis is a good option. This is a one-week, half-day morning program that teaches beginners the fundamentals of tennis, including drills and exercises. Enrollment is available the week of July 13.

There is also Tennis Camp for those who have played a bit before and want to finetune their skills. This is a one-week full-day camp that teaches the rules and fundamentals of the sport. Weeks available for enrollment are July 20, July 27, Aug. 4, Aug. 10, Aug. 17 and Aug. 24.

Girl campers can get together to enjoy a Girls Sports Spectacular the week of Aug. 4 to play a variety of sports.

On the week of Aug. 10, BoyzRule is a one-week, full-day camp geared to any boy looking for an adrenaline rush with activities such as lacrosse and ultimate Frisbee.

Another interesting option for a one-week full-day camp is Camp D’Uwana, which gives campers to opportunity to specialize

in an activity they are most interested in for the week. The theme changes usually each week, from arts and crafts to sports and is open to children from age 9 to 14. Sweet Delights has space for the week of July 13; Draw Paint and Create has openings Aug. 4; while also that same week there’s Ultimate Sports. For those who like to cook, there is also Breakfast Lunch and Dinner program with openings the week of Aug.10.

Another camp week for children ages 6 to 12 offering a wide variety of activities is called Playscapes, offered the week of Aug. 4.

Similar to Playscapes is Summer Sizzle, an outdoor activities one-week full-day camp starting the week of Aug 24.

One other one-week full-day camp offered the week of Aug. 24 is Creative Expressions; with both art and dance camps open to kids ages 9 to 13.

Creative Expressions also is available as a two-week full-day course for both arts and dance, with some spaces open starting July 27 and Aug. 10.

If your child has a level 5 swimming ability, you may want to consider the full day, weekly Summer Swim Camp. For ages 8 to 15, campers will learn lifesaving techniques and how to apply them through games and exercises. This camp is still open the weeks of July 20, July 27, Aug. 4 and Aug. 31.

Richmond Hill politicians, town staff and residents are mourning the sudden loss of recently retired town clerk, Donna McLarty.

Only 55, she had just retired in mid April after serving Richmond Hill for a total of 36 years.

McLarty joined the Town of Richmond Hill in 1979 and progressed over the years to various leadership roles including most recently, the key role of town clerk.

As town clerk, McLarty supported the mayor and council, facilitated council and committee meetings and managed the municipal elections.

She was found dead at home Tuesday, June 30. No cause of death has been stated.

A resident of Keswick, visitations were held Sunday and the funeral Monday at M.W. Becker Funeral Home in Keswick.

She is survived by husband Buck McLarty and sons Kyle and Brendan McLarty, her mother Barbara Cox, siblings Cheryl, Glen, Allison, Elaine, David, Michael and Steven, and a large extended family.

The town set up a book of condolences at the town offices at 225 East Beaver Creek Rd., for colleagues and residents to sign.

“Donna will be missed by her many colleagues and the community members she met and worked with over the years,” said a statement from the town’s communications services department.

There was an outpouring of praise and condolences on the funeral home website www.mwbeckerfuneralhome.com “My deepest sympathies to the McLarty Family in the sudden passing of our beautiful Donna, from myself and on behalf of the residents of Ward 5, Richmond Hill. She was a friend, a mentor and a colleague. She was the epitome of professionalism, strength and beauty,” wrote Councillor Karen Cilevitz.

“I am truly saddened by the sudden passing of Donna McLarty who had just taken early retirement from the Town of Richmond Hill where she had served for 36 years. Donna had always carried out her work in a professional manner and she was well respected and liked by all who had the privilege to know and work with her,” wrote

“Donna was a beautiful, lively person, cheerful, positive, creative and hardworking, too. So very sad to know she will not now be able to enjoy the long and happy retirement she would have loved sharing with her husband and family,” wrote Gail Blackburn, former town councillor from the late 1980s.

Another former councillor, Tom Simpson, said: “Donna was a wonderful person to work with, as well I considered her a friend.”

And on social media, former Ward 4 councillor Lynn Foster, now living in the United States, posted: “This is a very sad time for the Town. Donna was a good and faithful servant to the people of Richmond Hill. She did yeoman’s service to help and assist council through some pretty tough times. She will be missed.”

3 charities earn funds at Pan Am celebration Hospice King-Aurora placed first in the All for One Community Challenge.

During the Richmond Hill stop of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games Torch Relay evening celebration at the Richmond Green Sports Centre June 23, the organization was awarded $5,000 for first place.

Hospice King-Aurora squared off against two other charities, Richmond Hill Aquatic Club and Autism Ontario York Region chapter who received runner-up prizes of $2,500 each. The three charities are associated with Bingo World Richmond Hill.

In 2014, $13.3 million from Charitable Gaming proceeds were distributed to participating local charities across Ontario.

In the past nine years, Charitable Bingo and Gaming Centres across the province have given back more than $87 million to their communities.

The charities use the funds for after-school programs, medical centres and associations, children’s groups, music, arts and cultural groups, humane societies and youth sports among many other worthwhile causes.

Collision rates on York Region roads reached a 10-year low, stated the 2015 Traffic Safety Status Report The study, which documents road safety trends, was received by York Regional Council last week. York Region chairperson and CEO Wayne Emmerson said the report reflects motor vehicle collision data on regional roads collected and reviewed by the region in partnership with York Regional Police.

On average, there were more than 3.26 million daily vehicle trips made each day between 2012 and 2014, the document said.

“York Region has seen a decrease in the total number of collisions over the past five years and our goal is to further reduce these numbers,” Emmerson said. “Continuously working towards improving traffic safety is vital to providing residents and visitors with safer ways to move in and across regional roads.”

Highlights in the report include: · Collision rates in 2014 reached a 10-year low; · 70 per cent of all collisions were a direct cause of someone’s improper driving; 36 per cent were due to acts of aggressive driving; · Collisions most frequently occur on Fridays from the months of October to January, and during the evening rush hour; · The number of collisions is closely related to traffic volumes; as volumes increase, so

do collisions; · 44 per cent of all collisions were rearend collisions; · Most collisions, for all modes of travel, occur at signalized intersections; · 91 per cent of pedestrian involved collisions resulted in injury; · 70 per cent of all collisions occurred during dry road surface conditions; · Since implementing red light cameras in 2013, the number of right angle collisions has reduced by 48 per cent at red light camera locations.

It’s important to have programs and measures in place to ensure the safety of people travelling throughout the region, Richmond Hill Regional Councillor Vito Spatafora, chairperson of York’s transportation services, said. “In addition to implementing programs, it is necessary to review the results and assess their effectiveness.”

While there are a number of factors that contribute to the decrease in collisions, safety programs play an important role. Some of the programs York Region has put in place include revising speed limits on Regional roads, installing red light cameras at 20 intersections and implementing safety campaigns to enhance awareness for issues affecting pedestrian safety.

“It’s nice to have my family close by,” she said, adding her mom does not always have the opportunity to see her concerts in downtown Toronto.

Black is excited to be part of the Pan Am events.

“Everybody expects TO2015 to be about Toronto, but Pan Am has spread across so many awesome cities,” she said. “When Markham offered, I had to say yes, this is where it is home.”

She did admit it was a little strange to see her face on one of the promotional billboards in Markham.

“I did a double take,” she said, adding her success is still surprising.

“It will always be a surprise to me,” she said. “This is my passion, it’s my purpose, I did absolutely nothing to earn this gift of song so I don’t want to take it

Let the 2015 Pan American Games begin.

In Markham that is.

After years of planning and construction for the largest multi-sport event ever held on Canadian soil, with a cost pegged at $2.5-billion, the 2015 Pan Am Games dipped its toe in the water at the Atos Markham Pan Am/Parapan Am Centre Tuesday morning.

While Friday’s opening ceremonies mark the official start of Toronto2015, the first competition of the Games tipped off in a stateof-the-art pool, located off Kennedy Road and north of Hwy. 407 where Venezuela faced off against Puerto Rico in women’s water polo and played to an 11-11 tie.

Following that match, the United States cruised to a 25-3 win over Mexico.

Canada then faced Brazil in a match that ended in a 7-7 draw to conclude the early session.

Those in attendance were impressed with what they witnessed on the opening day of the Games and to see the multi-sport competition finally commence in the recently completed $80-million facility that will also host the badminton and table tennis events.

“It’s here, we’re excited for this moment,” said Mayor Frank Scarpitti.

“It’s great to see the Pan Am Games get started here in Markham before the opening ceremonies.

We’re cheering for Canada. It’s what it’s all about, to build the Pan Am spirit.

“It’s great to have this facility and to have it help in increasing the number of Canadian athletes in the future. We opened this facility last November and this is why we went

after the Games. We’re excited to be a host city.”

Curt Harnett, former Canadian Olympic and Pan Am Games cyclist who is serving as the chef de mission for Canada’s contingent at the Pan Am Games, was in total agreement.

‘It ranks right up there with some of the best.’

“It’s a great day to kick off 19 days of world class competition with what we saw today,” he said.

“It was great to see the Canadian women’s team fighting right to the end. To watch water polo in person it can change people’s minds of what it takes to be a great athlete.”

As for the facility, Harnett said it will serve the City of Markham well not just for the Pan Am Games but

in years ahead.

“It’s a significant asset for the City of Markham,” he said. “Frank (Scarpitti) has done a great job with his leadership to have an Olympicsized pool and an amazing field house accompanying it.

Also pleased with the facilities were the participants.

Many of whom had an early baptism with it when a test event was conducted earlier this year.

“It’s an amazing facility,” said Team Canada player Emma Wright, who scored a goal to put Canada ahead 7-6 before Brazil battled back to tie the game. “It’s one of the better ones in the world that I’ve been in and it ranks right up there with some of the best like the one when we were in Barcelona and used the one that they had during the Olympics.”

Patrick Oaten, Brazil’s head women’s team coach and a for-

mer high performance director of the Canadian women’s water polo program, gave the facility a thumbs up.

“It’s fantastic,” he said without any hesitation. “We did a test event in January and I wish there were more facilities like this one in Canada. I’m a sports-minded guy and when I was here (in Canada) I didn’t like to be recognized as being a one-sport nation.

“When I saw the plans for the facility I said the people in Markham are lucky to have it.”

“The pool is great,” added Johanne Begin, Team Canada women’s head coach.

The only concern she had was the absence of an adjacent dryland warmup area in the building.

“Most of the facilities have a gym part where we can do dryland training,” she said. “To have that would be a plus.”

A year after the Town of Richmond Hill instituted tow truck regulations, drivers appear to be safer and less likely to face price gauging by unscrupulous towers — but the towing industry still has a bone to pick with the town.

The controversial new rules, which prompted angry backlash from tow operators in 2013, led to dramatic decrease in excessive fees being charged for towing services in Richmond Hill, according to a staff report discussed at Monday night’s council committee of the whole meeting.

“Generally, the implementation of the bylaw has gone well and the program appears to be working well, as reported by both the motoring public and the tow industry itself,” the report said.

Some tow truck operators, however, remain unhappy with aspects of the bylaw and appeared in council chambers to raise their concerns.

The town’s regulation of the tow truck industry began on July 1, 2014, after two years of consultation and, at times, heated debate.

The town was one of the few remaining municipalities in the GTA that did not regulate the industry and was responding to numerous complaints from residents about extortion, intimidation and towers “chasing”

accidents.

“We were interested in this being a mandate for fairness and not gauging and enforcement and, by and large, what we set out to do we were successful at doing,” said John DeVries, director of regulatory services for the town.

DeVries said the town no longer hears complaints about $2,000 towing bills as was the case before the industry was regulated.

The few instances where tow service fees were not applied in accordance with the provisions of the bylaw, the over-charging was much lower – $200-$300, DeVries said – and enforcement staff has taken the appropriate action.

Tow truck owners and operators continue to express concern over the $2,000 initial license fee as being excessive and this has contributed to a low licensing uptake rate, the report said.

At the time the bylaw was created, town staff anticipated $330,000 in revenue thanks to the license purchases, but the actual revenue has been lower than expected as unlicensed tow operators continue to carry on their business and risk paying the $600 fine instead, the report said.

The town has fined some tow operators, but revenues from license purchases are lower than expected.

Town’s bylaw helps insurance industry, tow operator charges Staff anticipated the initial tow truck owner’s licensing fee (of $5,000, reduced to $2,000) would create enough of a financial reserve to see the program through its initial implementation, and perhaps prevent a draw on the tax base for at least two years, the report states.

However, the anticipated revenue has not materialized and license fees can’t fully cover the costs of the program into 2016, the report states. As well, resources required to license and regulate the industry are “substantial” and the town is unable to provide 24-hour vigilance.

Enforcement staff has attended only about 10 per cent of the known accident scenes and relies heavily on first responders, such as York Regional Police, to help in this effort.

Still, the situation is much improved over the pre-regulated days, the report concluded, and the bylaw creates a safer environment, levels the playing field for operators and ensures accountability in the industry.

Not everyone is fully supportive, however.

Sebastian Fuchs, CEO of ASAP towing, said he was initially excited about the much-needed bylaw, but told councillors Monday that “since the bylaw was in place I realized it’s not in place to help the residents, it’s in place to help the insurance industry …and we’re the victims of it now”.

Fuchs said he and other tow operators have multiple concerns, such as being bullied by

the insurance industry over compensation, and trucks that continue to operate without licenses.

Michael Parker, with York Regional Traffic Services, also raised concerns, including companies that are evading license requirements or impersonating his company using similar names, and insurance companies that are “using the bylaw as a hammer against us” in disputes.

“The problem I’m having is this is the first time I’m hearing from the towing industry that you’re not happy,” said Ward 1 Councillor Greg Beros, who made a motion to defer the item to allow for further discussion.

The motion was passed and the issue is expected to come before council after summer break.

The province, meanwhile, is expected to release a report in coming weeks on an Ontario-wide system of regulating the towing industry. Elliott Silverstein, manager of government relations with the CAA, said the provincial government has been consulting with stakeholders and is likely to set out province-wide regulations in early 2016.

This would provide consistent standards across Ontario, but individual municipalities could still be responsible for issuing licenses, and towers still be required to comply with municipal rules, he said.

“We’re trying to achieve the fine balance between ensuring safety, but also ensuring the industry is viable.”

Several York Region residents punched their ticket with the hope of claiming the top prize at the upcoming 2015 RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, July 23 to 26, Golf Canada recently announced.

Richmond Hill resident and Bayview Secondary School graduate Taylor Pendrith was given a tournament exemption based on his inclusion with the Team Canada Young Pro Squad.

For Pendrith, 24, his appearance into this year’s RBC Canadian Open will be his second after making his debut last year in Montreal.

During last year’s event he was tied in third place after the first round and just one stroke back of the lead.

Markham resident and York Downs Golf and Country Club member Billy Walsh earned his way into the field as the Number Oneranked player on the PGA of Canada Player Rankings presented by RBC. Walsh took to the fairways in last year’s RBC Canadian Open in Montreal.

Last week, 22-year-old Markham resident and former Team Canada member Richard Jung shot a course-record, 10-under 62 at Rattlesnake Pointe Golf Club to top the 144player field to earn an exemption through the RBC Canadian Open Ontario Regional Qualifier.

The three York Region residents are among 15 Canadian players entered in the field and hope to become the first Canadian to capture the title since Pat Fletcher claimed victory in 1954.

The Canadians confirmed for Glen Abbey will join a field of PGA Tour and international stars that includes World No. 3 Bubba Watson, World No. 5 Jim Furyk, World No. 8 Jason Day, World No. 13 J.B. Holmes, World No. 16 Matt Kuchar, World No. 17 Chris Kirk, World No. 22 Brooks Koepka, World No. 26 Brandt Snedeker, World No. 30 Ryan Palmer, World No. 40 Hunter Mahan, World No. 48 Graeme McDowell, World No. 65 Luke Donald, and World Golf Hall of Fame member Ernie Els.

Local gymnast aims to springboard to Rio Games

One person’s misfortune can be another’s fortune.

Maya Kojevnikov was chosen to be part of the Canadian senior national rhythmic gymnastics group just more than one year ago when they required a replacement following an injury.

The Richmond Hill resident made a quick decision to accept and hasn’t looked back.

The move opened doors for her to make her debut with the senior national team at the 2014 Pan American Championships and compete at the 2014 World Championships, where Canada finished 21st in the all-around and qualified for the 2015 World Championships — the first qualification event for the 2016 Olympics.

Remaining an integral part of Canada’s senior rhythmic group this year, the Richmond Green Secondary School graduate will have the opportunity to compete for Canada on home soil July 17 to 20 in the Pan Am Games.

For Kojevnikov, 18, to be a part of the Games in front of her family and friends is a dream come true.

“I am so excited to be taking part of my first Pan Am Games this summer,” she said while the club was overseas training in Spain. “Especially with this being in Toronto, where my friends and family are able to come and support us. This is honestly amazing. It’s pretty rare for them to be watching

my competitions live because the competitions are usually out of the country.”

Competing in the team event with a group that includes Anjelika Reznik and her sister, Victoria, who both reside in Vaughan, Lucinda Nowell, Katrina Cameron and Vanessa Panov, Kojevnikov feels they have a good opportunity to reach the medal podium.

She expects Brazil and the United States to be formidable opponents, but remained optimistic about Canada’s chances.

“In the end, it will all depend on how clean and well executed our routines are,” she said.

Introduced to the sport when she was seven years old, through the encouragement of her parents, Andrey and Ludmila, Kojevnikov said she became infatuated with it after taking her first class.

The sport requires individuals or teams of five or more manipulate one or two pieces of apparatus, including clubs, hoop, ball, ribbon and rope.

“I don’t particularly have a favourite apparatus. I love all of them because they are each unique in their own way,” said Kojevnikov, who trains with Silhouettes of York.

“Honestly, I feel like the sky is the limit,” she said. “I don’t have a specific goal in mind, although the 2016 Summer Olympics would be amazing.

I feel that my team and I just need to do our best and continue working hard every day.”

Moe Buckle had magnetic personality

he quantity and heartfelt quality of the condolences sent to Maurice “Moe” Buckle’s family following his passing May 14, 2015 at 71, are more than tributes; they also serve as poignant characterizations of the beloved Keswick man’s life.

Personally and professionally, Moe, as most called him, had a legion of connections, son Chris Buckle said.

“He had a network of people over the span of his life,” he recalled. “He had a lot of friends and acquaintances.”

Moe had a magnetic personally, his son recalled.

“He had a calming, warm presence,” he said. “He was always inviting you in. Congenial, serious, fun, he was all of the above as appropriate for the occasion.

“He was a jokester who enjoyed a good laugh and a good party.”

Moe was also a respected professional.

A former police officer, he served

on both Metro Toronto and York Regional Police forces. He worked for Dawson’s Marina in Keswick for several years and, for the past 22 years, successfully managed and consulted at Traffic Ticket Advocates in Newmarket. Chris continues to work at the company, providing legal services specializing in Highway Traffic Act offences.

As a licenced paralegal with the Upper Canada Law Society and longtime member of the Institute of Agents at Court, he actively defended traffic ticket matters in court since 1993. Moe was well known and respected throughout the GTA for providing professional representation.

He worked until the end, Chris

said, adding his father instilled invaluable life lessons.

“He always said if you put the time and effort in, you’ll get it back,” he said. “He worked for everything he had.”

Commiserations poured in.

“A great man that in a lot of ways was larger than life and had a big heart to match,” wrote Deborah Cherry. “He enjoyed life and helped many in many ways during his life.”

“Maurice was a special soul and will be greatly missed,” Michael and Katherine Fuchs said.

“He was a true gentleman, always smiling and very professional to the court clerks,” Janet Mills offered.

“He will be remembered for a very long time.”

Richmond Hill man can golf through his business

As a longtime golfing enthusiast, Richmond Hill’s Bruno Tomasso is grateful his business keeps him connected to the game he loves.

Tomasso is the president of Vaughanbased On Screen Sports Limited, which is the official Canadian distributor for Korean manufacturer Golfzon — a worldwide market leader of indoor golf simulators.

“I use to golf a lot more than I do now, and likewise a lot of people don’t have the time to golf like they used to; but our model has about 170 golf courses that you can choose from, so it’s easy to play 18 holes indoors,” said the Oak Ridges resident.

Besides being used for leisure purposes, Golfzon’s vice president of EU and Americas, Tommy Lim, says the state-of-the art golf simulator also serves academic purposes.

“It reads actual ball speed and the user can work on their putting and many other things,” said the Korean executive of the company’s latest offering, which is equipped with a large screen, along with front and side cameras, and a sensor.

“So it’s good for golf teachers or someone who really wants to improve

their golf skills for training purposes,” he explained of the simulator, which is used for training by the Korean national golf team.

Among the notable golf professionals to officially endorse the simulator is 2014 Canadian Women’s Open champion, So Yeon Ryu of Korea.

Tomasso adds the simulators have also been well received by golfing enthusiasts at various events where it’s been promoted in Canada — including the recent Manulife LPGA Financial Classic in Cambridge.

Besides allowing him to play the game he loves, his business also keeps him closely connected to his two sons, Mark and Paul Tomasso, who frequently assist in showcasing the simulator at the various promotional events.

“We’ve had a lot of interest in it and people love playing it and we love showing it ... and we’re really happy and proud to be affiliated with the LPGA,” said Tomasso.

They are planning to showcase the golf simulator again at the upcoming Canadian Women’s Open, which will be held Aug. 17 to 23 in Vancouver.
