A body was found, shortly after 11 a.m. yesterday, on the David Dunlap Observatory lands in Richmond Hill. Twenty York Regional Police officers had searched the area on foot in the morning, focusing on the neighbourhood where missing Richmond Hill woman Vanessa Straumann and her family live and the nearby observatory. The identity of the body was not known at press time. A coroner arrived at the scene at around noon to identify the body. Before the discovery, several local residents and friends of the family came to the Hillsview Road police command post, hoping to join the search, but YRP Const. Andy Pattenden told them civilians can best help by spreading the word via social media.
The observatory lands present a “high hazard area”, he said. “There are ponds, streams and forests where a person can have met misfortune.” Typically, ground searches take place over 12-hour time periods and stop at night when searches are slower and more difficult, he said. Pattenden said it is too early to say if foul play is involved. “At this point we are still asking anyone who has any information … to please come forward to 2 District,” said Pattenden. Kathy and Maureen, who asked that their last names not be used, showed up armed with water bottles, mosquito spray and running shoes, ready to help search. They set out along the railroad tracks south of Weldrick. “We’re friends of the mom and our kids went to school with them,” they said of the Straumann family. “We just want to show our support in
whatever way we can.” Earlier in the week, the father of the young woman, who went missing after leaving her home over the weekend, begged for her safe return. Greg Straumann said his daughter, Vanessa, 29, left their residence at some point over the weekend and had not returned. The father of three discovered her absence Monday morning after returning home from the family cottage with his wife, discovering only a note in her place. “Vanessa has been struggling with depression and she wrote in the note how she was ashamed and embarrassed, frustrated,” he said. Although the couple saw their daughter before departing Friday, Greg said that on Sunday, Vanessa didn’t answer his text and he noticed that See CALLED POLICE, page 8.
