Blind pedestrian killed by car had ‘pure heart’ By Jeremy Grimaldi

If you listen to those closest to her, Stephanie Baglione was one of those rare creatures who used her disability to propel others forward. “She was the light in the darkness,” former teacher Ines Mancuso said. “Even with limited vision, she saw the world in the right way.” Baglione, 21, from Richmond Hill, passed away last Friday, May 6 after being struck by a car, while she and her sister, 11, were walking Thursday evening near Pemberton Road, just west of Stockdale Crescent, where the crash occurred. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with York Regional Police. However, the

details of what exactly occurred are still not clear, according to police. Her passing prompted an outpouring of grief on social media, where her “beautiful” singing voice was enjoyed by so many since her first performance at age 13. Lisa Colburn posted one video of Baglione, who attended York University, singing Leaving on a Jet Plane, explaining how she hadn’t been able to watch the video because her grief was too strong. Underneath the YouTube video it explains Baglione was left legally blind after a battle with cancer, adding how, despite this, she managed to “take life by the horns and meet it with a positive attitude and a smile”. “It’s been a few days since I found out the

Nothing prepared him for this — not the stint with emergency services in Richmond Hill, not the earthquake in El Salvador nor the typhoon in Taiwan. How could you possibly prepare for a job that requires you to save a community as it burns down around you? Yet Jordan Redshaw is figuring it all out, minute by minute, tweet by tweet, his colleagues back home in York Region cheering him on. “I enjoy life beyond my comfort zone,” Redshaw posted on his LinkedIn account, describing himself as an expert in strategic communications. He never predicted just how far beyond “comfort” he would travel when he left his job with the Town of Richmond Hill last year to join the communications team for the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo — located in the northeast corner of Alberta and ground zero for the massive Fort McMurray wildfire. Before he became that municipality’s press secretary in February 2015, Redshaw was a communications coordinator in Richmond Hill and before that, for the Town of Georgina. But those jobs don’t hold a candle to what he’s doing now.

‘No one could possibly have known what [the fire] was going to become. It’s terrifying. Absolutely insane.’ Maybe that’s not the best metaphor. Redshaw and members of the communications team in Fort McMurray have been working around the clock since May 3, manning the municipality’s Twitter handle @RMWoodBuffalo to help evacuate 88,000 people displaced by the wildfire.

COURTESY MUNICIPALITY OF WOOD BUFFALO

I’m no hero, says former Richmond Hill communications staffer Jordan Redshaw of his critical job at command central for Fort MacMurray. ‘I’m just doing my job.’ In a weary-sounding, stumbly voice, he describes the marathon days and nights since he first began monitoring the fire May 1. “It was just a local state of emergency at that point,” he says. “No one could possibly have known what it was going to become. “It’s terrifying. Absolutely insane.” In the hours after the evactuation began May 3 he was immersed in his role providing up-to-date information via social media, on where the fire has spread, where residents should go and how to quickly and safely get out of the area. It’s a steady flow of information, busting rumours, providing direction to the stranded and comfort to residents looking for help. At the same time, he and the rest of the communication team were also being evacuated, twice, while working 16-hour shifts and longer, crashing when they could manage to

find time to sleep on cots set up in a fire hall office. It was essential that the information they relayed to a traumatized community was accurate. Rumours, in a crisis situation, can be deadly, he says, and Twitter became their most efficient tool. “It was literally the only channel we could use that wouldn’t be distorted.” For the past two weeks, he and his colleagues have been typing crucial information safety instructions and updates into Word documents. They then take screen shots of the message and post it to Twitter. “That way it can’t be altered.” It also means they can be “listening” to the constant chaotic conversation on social media and cut off false rumours as soon as they begin. At the same time, they’ve been live-streaming press conferences, conference calls with media and posting daily 30-second updates to Twitter from Chief Darby Allen of the Fort McMurray Fire Department. For someone who has worked in the field of professional communications for just four years, one could say it has been a baptism by fire — one his formers colleagues in Richmond Hill have been watching closely. “He helped develop our voice and I can see he has used the same approach in Fort McMurray,” says Meeta Gandhi, director of communication services for Richmond Hill. “You don’t speak in corporate talk. You need a more personable approach. He helped us hone that. But I can’t imagine the stress they are under. Our hearts go out to them.” Asked if his previous one-year term with Richmond Hill helped prepare him for the job he’s doing now, Redshaw just laughs. “Nothing can really prepare you,” he says. Life experiences may have helped. He was in Taiwan during a typhoon and lived in El Salvador during a major earthquake and forced

to evacuate to avoid a tsunami. “But this [Fort McMurray] has been, by far, the most intense thing.” He is reluctant to take on the “hero” label, though. “I’m just a messenger,” he says, quickly throwing kudos to the first responders in Fort

‘I will be pulled out in a couple of days. Forced to take a temporary leave and decompress ... they won’t let us stay much longer.’ McMurray. “They are truly incredible. They’re putting their lives on the line, literally, saving the community. Those stories will come out at some point.” Meanwhile, Redshaw continues to put in long days at the Fire Hall 5 outpost, five kilometres outside town, knowing he may soon be forced to leave. His own home has been spared, but he can’t go there just yet — not when there is no water, power or gas, and hot spots still linger in neighbourhoods. He has been put up in a modest hotel “that’s pretty well paradise to me. “But I will be pulled out in a couple of days. Forced to take a temporary leave and decompress,” he says. “I’m not ready to go yet, but they won’t let us stay much longer. Mental health is an issue they have to watch.” It has been stressful. He has lost track of time. He has cut himself off from emotions — has to, he says. “I need to stay professional, to do my job. I haven’t had time to digest what’s happened. At some point, though, we will need time to process.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Fort Mac fire makes dramatic case for being prepared

Review conducted with recyling staff

Housing crisis for seniors, too

Re: Recycling adventure disappointing, letter by Mary Atkinson, April 28. We’d like to offer our apologies for the recent frustrating experienced by Ms Atkinson at our [Richmond Hill and Vaughan] Household Hazardous Waste depots. It was a regrettable misunderstanding. Senior staff are actively working to prevent a similar incident from being repeated in future and we also reached out in person to speak to her about her concerns. We are reviewing our procedures with site staff to ensure they are clear about what condominium owners and multi-residential building residents are permitted to drop off. Our guidelines for Household Hazardous Waste Depots allow residents to drop off up to 60 litres of household hazardous waste and 20 fluorescent tubes per day. These limits apply to all residents, including condominium owners and multi-residential building residents, as a way to manage depot capacity and to comply with regulations related to onsite storage requirements. York Region continues to rank first in waste diversion among large urban municipalities and the fourth highest overall in Ontario. Our successes are largely due to our residents’ commitment to diverting waste from landfill. Their efforts, like those of Ms Atkinson, are truly making a difference. If residents have questions regarding correct disposal of a particular item, we encourage them to check our online resource, york. ca/bindicator or call 1-866665-6752.

How long is too long for an over 70-year-old senior to obtain a subsidized apartment in York Region? A person I know who has an annual income of less than $15,000 and a 50 per cent rent [subsidy] application was made eight years ago. Since that time 202 units came about at The Hub, as well as more units in another building on Major Mackenzie Drive East. There is much awareness made about homeless youths, but it would seem there is a crisis to provide low-income seniors with affordable accommodation in Richmond Hill and York.

A

gainst the terrible daily news stories and poignant social media posts about the Fort McMurray conflagration, Ontario and all York Region communities marked Emergency Preparedness Week last week. Although many of us — myself included — don’t pay much attention to safety awareness campaigns held each year, it was impossible to ignore the stark realities illustrating why families should prepare for disaster. Disaster struck May 3 in the northern Alberta town, and all Canadians have been watching in horror as 80,000 people — that’s the population of Newmarket — were forced to evacuate the flaming ruins of their community. Can we learn a lesson from this tragedy before it’s too late for our own families? The Region of York has a 99-page document on the ‘Risks in our area’. But if 99 pages is too daunting and time consuming for you to read, just click on your municipality’s website and find ‘Make an Emergency Plan’ or ‘Assemble a 72-Hour Kit’. I clicked on the latter for Richmond Hill and found a two-page PDF of fairly simple — but vital — information and tips to follow to ensure my family is ready for a fire, flood, ice storm or any such emergency. No one would dare say anymore, that ostrich-head-in-thesand statement: “It can’t happen here”. The December 2013 ice storm in Vaughan, Markham and Richmond Hill was a true disaster for those who lost power for days or had ice-coated trees topple on their properties. An even more recent ice storm in March of this year caused $25-million in damage for residents in Newmarket and Georgina. Flooding in a freak July 2013 rainstorm stranded passengers on a Richmond Hill-bound GO train. Those people rescued by rubber dinghies would certainly tell you

Marney Beck that disasters can — and do — happen unexpectedly. We can’t change the weather patterns and even the most environmentally committed residents know that climate change won’t be slowed or solved in a few years — or perhaps even in a generation. The only thing we can do — besides donating generously to the Red Cross for fellow Canadians in Fort McMurray ($54 million to date, incredible!)— is get our own family ready for any emergency, large or small. According to a federal emergency link at www.getprepared.gc.ca, it only takes 20 minutes to make a family emergency plan online. Before you click on the link, consider what safe exits you have from your home and neighbourhood; what meeting place you want to reunite with family members at work or school; your plan for pets; and know vital contact numbers for people close by (neighbours) or out of town (family). Have you seen black humour social media posts from Fort Mac evacuees saying in their panic to flee they took silly things with them such as a bear head trophy off a wall, or junk food treats, leaving behind key and precious objects? We all need to know where health and insurance documents are, or passports, to grab quickly. And it may sound mundane, but does each person in your home know the location of fire extinguishers, water valve, electrical panel, gas valve and floor drain? As each of those 80,000 evacuees would no doubt agree, we should all be prepared for disaster.

Even traffic tickets deserve fair trial Re: New parking ticket system could be ‘win-win’ for Richmond Hill, April 21. local politicians. On May Day, however, the Globe & Mail reported that Premier Kathleen Wynne has abandoned this alleged “winwin” at the provincial level. So, citizens will still be able to challenge minor infractions under the Provincial Offences Act. In Richmond Hill? Not so much. It may seem petty to worry about people paying traffic tickets with no chance to challenge the authorities, but it is a foundational principle of democracy that citizens charged with offences — however minor — are presumed innocent and guaranteed the right to a fair trial. Tempting as it may be to save money by silencing all those pesky demands for justice, the Ministry of the Attorney-General reports that only three per cent of all tickets go to court. Democracy is worth the price.

Vehicle alignment settings serve a variety of functions in vehicle operation. They affect handling, steerability, stability, performance and safety, among other things. When a vehicle is in total alignment, all wheels “agree” on one direction so there are no lateral forces to counteract. Research has shown that total vehicle alignment maintenance and inspection programs can pay dividends in extended tire wear for increased tire mileage, enhanced fuel economy, decreased component wear, greater uptime, improved driver comfort and safer vehicles. We recommend a wheel alignment on your vehicle at least once a year.

that we won’t be able to experience that again, and see each other grow into beautiful young adults. I will cherish the memories we shared.” Mancuso, chaplaincy team leader and religion teacher at St. Elizabeth, said Baglione’s passing hit her and her family extremely hard. “She was remarkable with her blindness,” she said. “She gave her gifts with her voice and a smile for anyone and never complained. She was pure of heart, kind and giving and always there to lend a hand to students and teachers. She embodied the ‘Be Attitude,’ in helping someone else it brings you joy and happiness if you have the right attitude. She saw the Kingdom of God around her, maybe that’s why the good ones go first, maybe she served her purpose.” Mancuso explained what made Baglione so beautiful, inside and out, was her ability to turn her disability into her best quality. “A lot of people walk around with tunnel vision,” she added. “Stephanie actually did have tunnel vision, but she could see the periphery and see it so very beautifully.” Baglione often performed at charity events in Richmond Hill including Terry Fox runs, Canada Day celebrations and numerous other cancer fundraisers. St. Elizabeth will honour Baglione with a book of memories at the Thornhill school before delivering it to her family. Her visitation is today (Thursday) from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Marshall Funeral Home and the funeral is Friday at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace in Aurora. Police continue to appeal for witnesses to contact the major collision investigation unit by calling 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7704.

Stefanie Baglione was often sharing her talents on stage singing at local charity events.

York police were called to a home on Shell Court after bullets were shot into the residence while the family was inside. Police are looking for an SUV similar to the one pictured.

Family fearful after two bullets pierce their home By Jeremy Grimaldi

jgrimaldi@yrmg.com

A Richmond Hill family is vowing to install the latest security devices in their home, after an unknown gunman shot bullets at their residence, piercing the door, last week. The incident occurred just before 2:30 a.m. Friday on Shell Court, near Bayview Avenue and Major Mackenzie Drive, when numerous residents and the homeowners themselves called police after hearing five loud gunshots. The owner of the home said the door was pierced with bullet holes along with one section of the second floor of the house. “We found two bullets in our home,” said the family’s father and owner of the home, who declined to give his name. “We had in-laws over at the time. I thought a picture fell and smashed, but the sound of the shots woke up my wife. My wife is very shaken up. I’m not going to tell you that I’m not, but she has been left very frightened by this.” Although no one was injured, both the K9 Unit and York Regional Police’s helicopter arrived and searched the area soon after, but found no one. Officers, who continued to scour the area

throughout much of Friday morning, said they discovered multiple bullet holes and shell casings near the home. The shots were fired at the home’s main floor and the second floor where the parents, one teenager, 17, and one young child, six, reside. No one was injured. “You can’t just up and sell your house,” the 17-year-resident of Richmond Hill added. “This could happen anywhere, we could move and it could happen there. I am looking at the safety situation, we will all be discussing it, but the best route is security cameras on the house. We want to try and make sure it doesn’t happen again. For sure my family is very afraid. It makes anyone feel frightened. You think your family is safe in your neighbourhood and then this happens? “But the police have been very cooperative and responded quickly.” York police have obtained images of a suspect vehicle leaving the scene. It is described as a 2015-2016 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk SUV, with a black stripe on the hood and a panoma sunroof. Anyone with information to help police is asked to call 1-866-876-5423 ext. 7241.

Heritage building no longer pink

On Saturday half of the block building at the 10312 Yonge St. heritage building was repainted a more subtle beige and by Sunday the hot pink colour was completely painted over.

beige-yellow. On Sunday, Mayor Dave Barrow posted on Twitter a photo of the building’s transformation with the message: “Thank you for respecting our downtown by covering over the pink paint job”. Mina Zeighami, whose father Majid owns Papa Pastry and Cafe, said her family meant no harm when they chose the shade of pink. That’s the trademark colour of their Toronto restaurant, she said, and the Zeighamis hope to open a similar establishment at that location in Richmond Hill. “I didn’t know it was offensive. It’s just a colour,” she said. “The mayor told us the neighbours didn’t like it and he didn’t like it either. So I asked him what’s your favourite colour and he said ‘how about beige?’, so that’s what we did.” Zeighami, whose father is out of the country, said the family has plans to demolish the front block addition and restore the heritage home to become a pastry shop and kebab house, “to make something that will help the community”. They are consulting with architects now, she said, and hope the new business will open in two years. “Maybe if people came to our restaurant here (in Toronto) they would understand,” she said. “We didn’t want to offend anyone. It is a community and we all want to get along.”

It was the talk of the town for the past 10 days — a heritage home in the heart of Richmond Hill that had been cloaked in hot-pink paint — but the Matthew McNair house is in the pink no more. And judging by the response on social media, it is welcome news to those who hope to revitalize the historic village core. The building, located at 10312 Yonge St., was built by a Scottish immigrant and prominent brick mason in late 1800s. Fallen into disrepair over the years, it had been saved from the wreckers ball with a heritage designation, giving hope to those who believe the village’s future depends on restoring — and highlighting — its vintage past. Over the years, the front of the one-anda-half storey brick home was obscured by a block addition, but heritage advocates hoped that would soon be removed. Instead, it suddenly appeared in bubblegum pink. Many, like Ward 4 Councillor David West, viewed the paint job as an insult to those who are working hard to revitalize the area. Town staff, local politicians and social media users all seem to have communicated that displeasure to the owners, however, because this weekend, the pink paint was passé, replaced with a demure shade of

Depending on who you ask, Ontario’s plans to expand the Greenbelt and manage growth will either result in unwieldy intensification or protect the environment. “The push is for intensification. At the end of the day, what we’re looking at is more condos and more townhouses. What the growth plan really does is restrict housing choice,” Joe Vaccaro, executive director of the Ontario Home Builders’ Association said. “Everyone is going to have to build up. What does building up mean in places like Markham, where they have unbelievable condo growth? What does it look like?” But Newmarket-Aurora MPP Chris Ballard says the province is taking steps to protect the environment. “We’re growing the Greenbelt. I think it’s really exciting because the Oak Ridges Moraine … was one of the top five things I heard at the door when I was knocking. People are very concerned about protecting the environment, protecting the Oak Ridges Moraine and growing the Greenbelt.” Ballard says intensification is needed to support public transit infrastructure, but the province still wants to protect our sense of communities. “I think the way the world is going is higher densities. But I understand in the GTHA there is enough residential land identi-

fied to allow us to build for the next 20 years without urban sprawl. We have to make sure it’s sustainable growth. That means making sure people can walk to a transit line or a GO station line or they are within an easy commute of transit. That’s what people tell us they want,” he said. “We have to have balanced communities. We can’t have people living cheek by jowl if we don’t have adequate greenspace, if we don’t have parks, if we don’t have trails where they can walk from their house to school or to work. We have to plan for all those sorts of things. We can’t just shoehorn people in without all the amenities that make it a complete community.” Hinged on recommendations from a land use planning review advisory panel, chaired by former Toronto mayor David Crombie, the province has proposed a number of plans to mitigate urban sprawl and support the protection of natural heritage. Tim Gray, executive director of environment defence, applauded the announcement.

mitigate urban sprawl “(It) is great news for Ontarians who care about local farms, forests and sustainable communities,” he said. “We’re pleased that the province is showing leadership with new protections for the Greenbelt, including sensitive water supplies and natural heritage systems, while supporting the agricultural

I think that it’s important to make some decisions and have studies to support what you go ahead with and that appears to me to be what they have done.” But, she did voice concerns, as well. “If they don’t get it right, they’re using up class one farmland that is a non-renewable resource. The stronger intensification targets in the Growth Plan should help slow unnecessary low-density sprawl that is bad for the environment, expensive to provide services to and diminishes quality of life in the Greater Golden Horseshoe,” Gray added. Planes will continue to take off and land at Buttonville Airport for several years to come. The development that would house 7,200 residents has been delayed, so the airport has been given another extension.

Buttonville airport closure again in holding pattern BY AMANDA PERSICO

apersico@yrmg.com

Buttonville Airport will continue in operation at least until late 2017, parties working together on its development into a residential and commercial hub announced last week in another extension for the airport’s life. Cadillac Fairview and Armadale Co. Ltd., owners of the airport lands at 16th Avenue and Hwy. 404 in Markham, submitted an application to the city to rezone the site in 2011 to permit a world-class employment district and vibrant, mixed-use lifestyle destination, they said. Authorities have not granted the land use change for the project and the application is currently before the Ontario Municipal Board. As a result CF, Armadale and Torontair Ltd. have extended the timeline for airport operations to continue until at least fall 2017. The outlook for extensions beyond this date will be dictated by progress on approvals, they said. The OMB proceedings date back to 2013, when the airport located adjacent to Hwy. 404 at 16th Avenue was initially scheduled to close. Richmond Hill, Markham and York Region all have a stake in the proceedings, with several mediation sessions set for July and

another prehearing in August. Transportation, traffic and land use are among issues being ironed out. The Buttonville Town Centre proposal envisions a man-made lake and water feature along the west side of the 170-acre property, complete with a boardwalk and restaurant on the water. The lake would be large enough to accom- modate dragon boat races. The area would be home to about 7,200 residents with up to 3.6 million square feet of residential space. The project would include a 60-storey tower. The plan also envisioned some 22,000 jobs with up to 1.2 million square feet of retail, commercial and entertainment space and up to 4.4 million square feet of office space. There are also plans for a hotel and convention centre on site. The plan would also extend Allstate Parkway up to 16th Avenue. This isn’t the first time the mixed-use development has been held up by land use and planning issues. In 2014, it was announced the airport would remain open until 2016. Last fall, the airport was the backdrop for the miniseries 11.22.63, based on a novel by Stephen King in which a man travels back in time to try to prevent the assassination of president John F. Kennedy.

A fire in a convenience store caused a road closure west of Bayview Avenue at Major Mackenzie Drive East in Richmond Hill Monday morning. York Regional Police and Richmond Hill firefighters were called to the scene at 9:06 a.m. after store employees discovered a small fire in the basement of the standalone building. Leeann Lawrence, communications officer for Richmond Hill Fire and Emergency Services, said the fire was put out, but four trucks remained on the scene for overhaul and clearing of smoke. Traffic was being temporarily diverted at eastbound Major MacKenzie Drive between Bayview Avene and Colborne Road.

Double Oak Ridges garden fires extinguished If you were in the area of Bloomington Road and Yonge Street Tuesday afternoon, you may have noticed smoke billowing across the skies. Richmond Hill firefighters responded at 2:15 p.m. to a call at 21 and 23 Rosegarden Cres. in Oak Ridges. A fire apparently broke out in a shed at 21 Rosegarden and spread to the adjacent shed next door. The flames were extinguished and no one was home at the time of the fire, according to an advisory from Deputy Fire Chief Shane Caskanette. Three fire vehicles were on scene. There were no injuries to report and the cause of the fire iwas unknown. - Kim Zarzour

York Regional Police responded to a shooting at a 4040 Steeles Ave. plaza in Woodbridge early Sunday morning. It wasn’t the first time the Vaughan plaza has been riddled with bullets. The entire plaza, home to more than half a dozen bridal boutiques, wedding and cake shops and limo services, was barricaded off as investigators collected evidence Sunday afternoon. Just before 1 a.m., a man in his 20s was shot outside La’ Shish Bar & Grill in the plaza and was rushed to hospital with serious injuries. This is the third shooting involving patrons from the bar in less than a year. “I feel like crying. It’s happened so many

times,” said a local shop owner, who did not want to be named out of fear. “This is becoming like another Jane and Finch area,” she said through tears on the phone. It was bullets this time, but most other mornings the parking lot is littered with liquor bottles, needles and condoms, she added. “Come in the morning,” the shop owner said. “It’s a disaster. This is nonsense.” The plaza was closed off to employees. Store owners were encouraging patrons to call ahead if they had appointments, needed to pick up party favours or had bridal fittings. Last year, a stray bullet went through a wall and into a neighbouring bridal boutique. “My staff are scared to come in,” said the shop owner. “They are scared to go near the windows.”

Bail hearing starts in Cellucci murder case By Jeremy Grimaldi

jgrimaldi@yrmg.com

The bail hearing is underway for Richmond Hill’s Nick Bagherzadeh, the man charged with stabbing a beloved brother, friend and son. Gianluca Cellucci, 22, was stabbed outside Luxy Nightclub in Vaughan during a fight in the early hours of Feb. 7. An Aurora man was also stabbed, but survived. Bagherzadeh, 20, was charged with sec-

ond degree murder and attempted murder. On Tuesday almost 100 supporters filled the Newmarket courthouse to show solidarity in Cellucci’s memory. His mother, Joanna Liokossis, was also present for the hearing, overseen by Justice Michelle Fuerst. There were far fewer supporters there for Bagherzadeh, many of whom were attempting to ensure his bail and act as sureties during his upcoming trial. The hearing continues May 24.

The plaza has been a popular destination for brides-to-be shopping for wedding dresses, bonbonierie, party favours or other specialty gifts for close to three decades. Former customers were shocked to hear about the shooting at the well-known bridal destination. “As someone who was lucky enough to

find a dress a week before my wedding here, I am devastated to hear that such a kind family business had such an event take place,” said Veronica Carrier, who bought her wedding dress at a shop in the plaza two years ago. Some shop owners have considered moving further north, but rent is more expensive for smaller space, one merchant said.

Are you not hearing clearly when a group of people are talking? Many people find that they are no longer able to understand everything being said, particularly when in the company of others. Engineered in Switzerland, the Audéo V hearing aid has been designed specifically to understand speech in group situations.

NS

The majority of those surveyed stated that when exposed to considerable background noise they are able to hear that something is being spoken, but can no longer discern precisely what is being said. The words seem blurred and indistinct. But why is that? The effect tends to manifest itself in group situations, especially in restaurants. It is the high-pitched tones perceived at the entrance to the cochlea that determine when you hear things accurately. In the majority of cases these parts of the inner ear are the first to be affected by noise or aging. As the high-pitched tones are no longer perceived well, the auditory centre of the brain begins to struggle to decode language. It’s a bit like an image that doesn’t have enough pixels.

Hearing sensation! Swiss researchers: Audéo V is superior for conversation.

Without Audéo V

With Audéo V

The Audéo V hearing aids provide considerable reduction in noise allowing you to focus on speech. Developed by Swiss audiologists the Audéo V hearing aid is designed to improve speech comprehension in noise, particularly with hearing loss in the high-frequency range. People can trial the new Audéo V system by Phonak simply by calling now to do so. During your FREE hearing test, our Hearing Care Professionals will determine how speech comprehension can be improved in various situations and what role the technology called “Autosense OS” plays. This technology can recognize where the person being spoken to is located and can amplify only his or her voice,

while ambient noise is reduced. Thanks to several synchronous microphones, the hearing aid can detect sound in all directions and select the direction that speech is coming from within milliseconds, seamlessly adjusting to the listening situation. According to Swiss researchers, this can significantly improve speech comprehension, especially in conversation for the right candidates. The creators of Thornhill-based Yogen Fruz may have entered into a contract to buy the Promenade Mall, according to sources this week. Brothers Michael and Aaron Serruya want to buy the mall, according to real estate website BuzzBuzzhome news. The brothers launched the first Yogen Fruz store in the Thornhill mall in 1986, the same year The Promenade opened at Bathurst Street and Clark Avenue West. Yogen Fruz has expanded into more than 1,400 locations, operating in over 47 countries, with about 270 stores in Canada. The Serruyas immigrated to Canada from Morocco in 1966.

They were part of an early wave of Jewish immigration caused by growing antiSemitism. Michael and Aaron noticed that frozen yogurt stands were popular in the U.S., but were practically non-existent in Canada. The first Yogen Fruz opened at the Promenade Mall on a hot August day in 1986. There is still an outlet at the Promenade, along with stores at nearby Centrepoint Mall at Yonge Street in Thornhill and Hillcrest Mall in Richmond Hill. Calls and emails to Yogen Fruz headquarters and the Toronto Real Estate Board’s York Region office have not been returned by press time. RBC Capital Markets could not confirm information about the selling of the mall.

New community choir seeks singers A new community choir, Chorus York, is looking for singers. Chorus York is an auditioned, four-part harmony chamber choir that is based in Richmond Hill and is looking for new members who can read music and who love to sing a variety of choral music. Rehearsals are on Monday evenings at St. Matthew’s United Church, 333 Crosby Ave.,

from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. All voices welcome, but if you sing bass or alto, you would be particularly welcome. The mission of this regional choir is: to entertain, educate and enrich our community through the performance of a variety of fine choral music. For more information, call 905-884-7922; 905-751-3989 or 905-884-4535.

An investment management firm, Serruya Private Equity, gave the brothers a stake in a variety of major companies, such as American Apparel and Cold Stone Creamery. Cadillac Fairview, which currently owns The Promenade, is one of the largest com-

mercial property owners in the world. Cadillac Fairview spent $45 million on upgrades to the property in 2009 and put the mall up for sale in February of this year. Some of the mall’s major tenants include Sears, T & T Supermarkets and Old Navy.

NOTICE OF PESTICIDE USE York Region West Nile Virus Mosquito Control Program: From May 16 to October 7, 2016, The Regional Municipality of York in conjunction with the York Region District School Board and York Catholic District School Board will be conducting a larvicide program under the authority of the Medical Officer of Health. The purpose of the program is to control larval mosquitoes to prevent their development into carriers of West Nile virus. The pellet formulation of the larvicide methoprene (product name Altosid) with Registration No. 21809, Altosid XR briquets (methoprene) with Registration No. 27694, or Bacillus sphaericus (product name VectoLex WSP) with Registration No. 28009 under the Pest Control Products Act will be placed into catch basins along Regional and Municipal roads and in catch basins on private property as required. In addition, the biological larvicide Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis (product name Vectobac), with Registration No. 18158 or VectoLex CG Registration No. 28008 under the Pest Control Products Act may be placed in ditches and temporary or permanent pools including storm water retention ponds if evidence of mosquito breeding is found. All larvicide will be applied by Ministry of the Environment licensed applicators or trained technicians.

Larviciding is a low risk and effective measure for the control of West Nile virus when used in accordance with label directions. The slowrelease pellet formulation interferes with the mosquito life cycle, preventing the mosquito larvae from reaching maturity. It is not sprayed. The products have been approved by both the provincial and federal governments and are considered low risk for humans, pets and the environment. Mackenzie Health Foundation has assembled a team of “prominent leaders in business, health care and the community” to spearhead the effort to raise $250 million, in large part, for Vaughan’s long-awaited hospital. The foundation, which also raises funds to enhance care at Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital, unveiled the so-called campaign cabinet for its $250-million Exceptional Care Belongs Here campaign earlier last week. Greg Sorbara, former Liberal MPP for Vaughan and a former Ontario finance minister, is leading the cabinet, which features several developers as well as real estate professionals, construction union representatives, politicians and bankers. “We are asking people to make a gift to something that will be a direct part of their lives, for the rest of their lives and for generations to come,” Sorbara said in a media release. “This cabinet will help to inspire the donations that will create lasting legacies and trans-

form health care in southwest York Region.” Among the campaign cabinet members are: • Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua; • Glenn Beaumont, president of Enbridge Gas Distribution and

chairman of the Mackenzie Health Foundation board; • Robert De Gasperis, president of DG Group (formerly Metrus Development); • Marie Fiorellino-Di Poce, owner of John Paul & Co. and a founding member ETA of Vaughan Women’s

Shelter; • Vince Galifi, executive vice-president and CFO of Magna International Inc.; • Lou Greenbaum, principal with The Vogue Development Group Inc.; • Tony Iannuzzi, president of the Carpenters’ District Council of Ontario; • Sandra Maio, lawyer for HBNG Holborn Group (which includes Maystar General Contractors, KAPP Contracting and Poetry Living); and • Altaf Stationwala, Mackenzie Health president and CEO. Magna International’s $10-million pledge, made last October, ranks as the top gift made to the campaign so far. In recognition of that generous gift, the emergency department at the new Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital will be named Magna Emergency. The foundation expects to announce additional pledges of $1 million or more in the near future. A major portion of the funds generated by the $250-million campaign will go to cover the “local share,” which includes 10 per cent

of construction costs for the Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital as well as the majority of equipment and furniture costs. On top of that, Vaughan taxpayers contributed $80 million toward purchasing and development of the land at Major Mackenzie Drive and Jane Street where the hospital will be built. That money is being paid through a special levy expected to remain on the property tax bill until at least 2021. The exact cost of building the hospital, and when its doors will open, is slated to be announced in the fall, after the consortium charged with designing, building, financing and maintaining the facility is selected. Some officials have suggested the price tag to build the proposed state-of-the-art, 350-bed hospital is in the range of $1 billion. Up until now, the goal has been to have the hospital built and open in 2019.

David Hamilton Park, arena to see $27M ‘four seasons’ overhaul By KIM ZARZOUR

kzarzour@yrmg.com

Construction is expected to begin in 2017 on a new recreation destination in southeast Richmond Hill. David Hamilton Park and the Ed Sackfield Arena, near Leslie Street and 16th Avenue, are poised for a major overhaul and expansion. At last week’s committee of the whole, councillors approved master plan and schematic designs for the $27-million project and it did get final approval this past Monday. The new facilities are expected to be

complete in the fall of 2018. The revitalized park will feature a splash pad, multi-use court and outdoor fitness equipment. A second ice pad will be attached to the existing arena, along with a larger fitness centre and indoor walking track.

‘VERY EXCITED’ “As an association representing 4,000 to 5,000 supporters, we commend town staff,” said Dean Artenozi, a board member with the Richmond Hill Hockey Association. “We are very, very excited and very proud of what’s been accomplished here.”

Artenozi said Richmond Hill families have been struggling with a lack of ice time and are forced to travel to facilities in places such as Vaughan and York University. The new arena will help alleviate that pressure, he said. The rink twinning project, to cost an estimated $20,651,400, will include an additional barrier-free washroom in the existing arena, construction of a drop-off covered walkway and will meet the silver standard for LEED (a green building certification program). Councillors voted to authorize staff to proceed to the design development and detail design phases. The refurbished park, located on 10.4 hectacres off Valleymede Drive, will have a “four seasons” design theme. The park will be 30 years old in 2017 and was deemed a priority for renewal, staff said.

MUCH PUBLIC CONSULTATION A lengthy development process included public consultation via a web-based survey, a public meeting last October, a presentation to council and online opportunities to comment. Sports groups, associations and clubs that use the facilities were also consulted. A public survey was posted on the town’s website in May 2015 and notices advising of the survey were sent to more than 1,200 residents in the neighbourhood. Signs throughout the park let the community know how to express opinions on future plans. The final draft of the master plan — with an estimated construction cost of $6.2 million — includes: • Addition of a multi-use court and a splash pad. The court will have a coloured acrylic surface and provide users with a variety of opportunities including footsal, basketball and hockey; • Re-use of splash pad water to irrigate the sports fields and possibly other turf areas in the park; • Retrofit of the existing softball, hardball and soccer fields on site to include irrigation and drainage, as well as upgrading of the ball diamond layouts; • Replacement of the existing playgrounds with relocation of the north playground to provide a more interactive relationship between indoor arena spaces and outdoor park space;

DID YOU KNOW? David Hamilton is a former Commissioner of Parks and Recreation for the Town of Richmond Hill. Ed Sackfield is in the town’s Sports Hall of Fame. He participated in the formation of several sports clubs including the Richmond Hill Arena Association and the Richmond Hill Curling Club, coached hockey from 1954 to 1990 and was awarded the prestigious OMHA Honour Award. • Retention of the tennis court facility with replacement of perimeter fencing and an expansion to the apron around the playing surface; • Enhancement of pedestrian connectivity through the park including a prominent north-south “spine” to link facilities, and creation of a walking/jogging loop in the west area of the park; • A new outdoor fitness area located near the walking/running loop; • Two outdoor table tennis stations will be located between the main walkway and the oval walking loop, bordered by shade trees for relief from the sun on hot summer days. Users will be required to bring their own balls and paddles; and • Planting of new trees shrubs and perennials throughout the entire park. There will be no change necessary to the number of parking spaces existing on the site, the staff report said.

FOUR SEASONS THEME The “four seasons” theme will be illustrated with strategic use of materials, colours, poetry, words and fragrances from plant materials. The new arena pad will be south of the existing building and will be accessed primarily through the main entrance of the existing building. A secondary entrance is proposed along the building’s north façade providing direct connection to the proposed water splash pad, playground and plaza.

Photocopy snake family released into woodlot near school By AMANDA PERSICO

apersico@yrmg.com

Sending their children out into the world is an experience all mothers will at some point encounter. Even mothers in the wild. Over the Mother’s Day weekend, the Toronto Wildlife Centre released back into

the wild nine brown snakes, a mom and eight babies. Once back in nature, the snakes will go their separate ways. Last winter, a harmless brown snake wiggled its way into St. Robert Catholic School in Thornhill. She slithered into — and made a tem-

porary home of — the school office’s photocopier. “My personal theory is the photocopier was a warm place to hibernate,” longtime Toronto Wildlife Centre volunteer Joanne Ingrassia said. “It’s anyone’s guess how she got in the copier or even in the school.” The wildlife centre handles up to 30,000 hotline calls each year and admits about 5,000 animals into the centre’s wildlife hospital. The centre works with more than 270 different species of wild birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians. The snake situation was a little out of the ordinary. “We get calls about wildlife all the time, wildlife out in the wild and on city streets,” Ingrassia said. “It’s unusual to get a call about an animal inside.” After a technician was called to take apart the copier, the foot-long snake was taken to the

wildlife centre. To the surprise of many, the snake was pregnant and later gave birth in the wildlife centre hospital. Since brown snakes usually hibernate during the cold season, the entire copier snake family was held together over the winter months, being fed their natural diet of grubs, earthworms and slugs. That is until this past weekend. Now that overnight temperatures are consistent, the snakes — mom and babies — were released back to their home turf, a wooded area near the high school where snake was found. The non-profit organization is the wildlife service provider for Markham that assists sick, injured, orphaned and distressed wildlife, and operates a full-service wildlife hospital. James Richmond is returning to the head coaching ranks. The former head coach and general manager of the Aurora Tigers was named head coach of the Ontario Hockey League’s Mississauga Steelheads last week. The Oak Ridges resident will take over the role from James Boyd, who will focus on general manager duties for the OHL franchise. “There are so many moving pieces in being a GM,” said Richmond, 50, who was an assistant coach in Mississauga last season. “I have no ambition to go into the management side of the game. It’s a natural progression on all sides.” The Steelheads could be a team on the rise in the OHL’s Eastern Conference after finishing fourth in Central Division and seventh overall in the conference standings. Mississauga fell to the Barrie Colts in a seven-game opening-round series this spring. “Being around the team this year I think helps me next year,” said Richmond. “If everyone is back, we have potential for a good team. Our best guys last year were our younger guys, so that bodes well for us. We have some good pieces, but so much depends on the (NHL) draft.” It is unclear how the appointment will impact Richmond’s duties as a member of the development team for the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League. “Right now, we’re playing around with it a little bit,” he said. “I won’t be able to travel in the winter. Moving into the head (Mississauga) job makes it a little unclear. I have had contact from some players about working together.” Richmond was twice voted coach of the year during during his five seasons with the Tigers before accepting a role as assistant coach in Mississauga last season. He was previously head coach with the Georgetown Raiders.
