Essentially, your executor is the person appointed to make sure that your will is properly carried out. If you wish, you do have the right to appoint just one person as your executor.

• You should consider whether the person you are appointing as executor has the time to take on the task. An executor may be trustworthy, but he or she may be unwilling to accept the appointment. Executors have the right to decline the appointment at the outset when they ﬁnd out they have been named. • If you are considering appointing an executor who lives in a foreign jurisdiction, you should discuss this with the lawyer preparing your will. Make sure you tell your lawyer that your executor lives in a foreign jurisdiction, so that she can address concerns regarding the requirement for your executor to post a bond. For example, the law of Ontario provides that there is no necessity for an executor to post a bond, if that executor lives in a jurisdiction within the British Commonwealth.

• Your executor will have to make some management and business decisions. He or she will also have to deal with your grieving family. You should be aware that even though your executor may not have detailed business and management knowledge, he or she can hire professionals such as lawyers and accountants to deal with any complicated issues. • If you do not think that your children will get along with each other after your death, you may decide not to appoint any of your children as executors. Instead, you might wish to choose a neutral person or ﬁnancial institution. • It is always a good idea to appoint one or more back up executors, in case your ﬁrst executor has predeceased you, or if he or she is unwilling or unable to act. • If you are appointing three or more co-executors, such as three of your adult children, you may consider inserting a majority clause in your will to allow two of the three to make a binding decision.

STEVE SOMERVILLE ssomerville@yrmg.com Forever Thyme Sanctuary in west Stouffville is a unique farm operation - it’s a retirement home for elderly horses. The facility houses 21 horses - almost all of them in their 20s (senior citizens in horse years), as well as

two donkeys and three minis. Rae Ierullo and her family started the horse sanctuary in 2013. She along with daughters Aeden and Avery oversee the 50-acre property, which is a registered charity. "These horses will live out their lives here in comfort and in a loving environment," she says. "Many of

these horses would end up as pet food otherwise."Aeden and Avery oversee the day-to-day operation of the farm. Staff operate machinery, corral the horses, tame the horses as needed and perform many other duties associated with animal care. Everyone mucks the paddocks and stalls. The facility is roomy and de-

signed for retired working or formerly competitive race or equestrian horses as well as displaced or abandoned horses. The farm is not open to the public, but they do participate in local functions and fundraising events, including Doors Open Whitchurch-Stouffville this past June.

No time for red tape on housing

Earlier this year, Statistics Canada released data from the 2016 census that indicated a long predicted, but nonetheless startling change had occurred in our country’s demographics. "From 2011 to 2016, Canada registered the largest increase in the proportion of seniors since Confederation. This acceleration of population aging is the result of the first baby boomers reaching the age of 65," StatsCan reported. "For the first time, the share of seniors (16.9 per cent) - the share they represent of the total Canadian population - exceeded the share of children (16.6 per cent). The increase in the proportion of seniors from 2011 to 2016 was the largest observed since 1871 - a clear sign that Canada’s population is aging at a faster pace." In our news feature Senior Tsunami, Metroland Media looked at this change and its implications on housing for the average senior. We defined average as the range from having no additional income from a company pension or RRSPs (surviving solely on CPP and OAS benefits), to having a retirement pension or savings. In short, we focused on housing solutions for the middle-class senior; the one who can’t afford the average monthly cost of $3,526 for an Ontario retirement home (in the GTA, it is more than $4,700), but does not qualify for government-assisted housing. We also used a projection by the province’s ministry of finance that shows the senior population in much of central Ontario will more than double in the next 25 years. The results were frightening. Although we have watched the baby boomers ascend the population triangle year after year, we are ill-prepared to provide housing alternatives to match their income level. Several in-depth reports by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation have forewarned of the impending crisis, but little in the form of solutions have taken shape. The province has been silent. In fact, we believe we are in a too-little, too-late situation for the Ontario government to show leadership on the issue of senior housing. We no longer have the luxury of time to meander the red tape of government. What we need are community-based, grassroots solutions. Ontario could offer surplus land or closed schools for senior housing developments. Municipalities, regional councils and provincial programs must collaborate to eliminate barriers, such as zoning and building bylaws, to pave the way for these alternatives. We need to work together to resolve this crisis. With 45,000 seniors across the country relying on food banks each month, we need to start today.

• LETTERS & COMMENTARY • Infuriated, frustrated at OMB decision Re: Sky’s the limit, Sept. 14. I, like Richmond Hill Ward 5 Coun. Karen Cilevitz, am infuriated and frustrated that once again, the OMB has thumbed its nose at Richmond Hill town council by caving in to developer desires - this time to build two towers of 24 and 29 storeys in an area in which the town’s Official Plan allows a maximum of 20 storeys. OMB reform is needed immediately, lest town councils, and town planning and other staff, throw in the towel and say to heck with creating thoughtful, rigorous Official Plans; any plans produced will likely be steamrollered at OMB hearings, owing

largely to the crafty work done by the lawyers and alleged experts that developers hire to represent their projects. A few years ago, I and dozens of other conscientious Richmond Hill residents dedicated hours of our time contributing to the People Plan exercises which, in turn, informed subsequent town strategic and official plans. I now feel that we participants wasted our time and were duped, not by our town hall, but by a provincial government that lets the OMB continue to be a most unwelcome elephant in our community. ern country so freely. Irrespective of whether this is terrorism or not (which it clearly is), I think the more pertinent issue here is about the gun laws that exist in the United States. In 2017, there were over 270 mass shootings, and over 11,000 deaths in the United States as a direct result of gun violence. This has led to the continuous grief and worry of many families. I am thankful as a Canadian living in our safe country to not have to worry about such things, but use this as an opportunity to call for the reconsideration of the gun laws in the United States. Complete Canadian Curriculum 3 pulled from retail shelves following public outcry, publisher issues an apology TERESA LATCHFORD tlatchford@yrmg.com A Richmond Hill publisher is recalling an education workbook following public outcry over the depiction of Indigenous history. Many bookstores, including Indigo, have pulled the Complete Canadian Curriculum 3 workbook off shelves after discovering the social studies section states that when European settlers arrived in North America and needed land to live on, "the First Nations peoples agreed to move to different areas to make room for the new settlements." Even more infuriating, said Richmond Hill resident Mashoud Nasseri, is the passage that states the First Nations peoples "moved to areas called reserves, where they could live undisturbed by the hustle and bustle of the settlers." The Canadian government took nearly a decade to come to the conclusion that it needs to turn the page on its relationship with First Nations peoples, Nasseri explained. How anyone could miss Canada’s troubled history is astounding, he added. "This is not just a simple mistake and the details

are worse than nonsense. I’m very upset," he said. "One would think a publisher has the responsibility to ensure accuracy and even more if that publisher is also an educator." In a recent Facebook post, Popular Book Company Canada says its ob-

jective is to publish quality workbooks and learning material for children. However, it acknowledged the workbook in question does not provide an accurate depiction of the interaction between Canada’s First Nations and European settlers.

"While we cannot undo what has already been published, we are committed to making things better for future editions," the post stated. Going forward, the publisher is issuing an immediate recall of the workbooks, has committed to

JEREMY GRIMALDI jgrimaldi@yrmg.com It was the night of the 2013 Superbowl when more than 2,000 gathered at Markham’s Le Parc Banquet Hall to party and gamble, allegedly illegally. The problem for the attendees was that hundreds of cops from six police forces, including York Regional Police, joined as part of the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit to bust the illegal online gambling website Platinum Sports Book’s party in a spectacular fashion. Found that day were a trove of goods, according to police, including $1.6 million in cash, handguns, ledgers, bank statements and documents that police say belonged to criminal organizations. Some of the raffle prizes included Rolex watches, Jet-skis and Sea-doos, po-

lice said, noting the goods seized at the party were worth about $2.6 million. A financial audit of the seized betting records said between 2009 and 2013 PlatinumSB grossed more than $103 million. It allegedly used toll-free phones lines and website based in Costa Rica. Following the raid, 18 people were charged, a number of them from York Region. Among them was Bill Miller, a former member of Hells Angels. Last week, Miller was sentenced to 15 months behind bars. He is not the first man, who Justice Michael Brown said was in a "leadership role", to be punished as a result of PlatinumSB, according to The Toronto Sun. Gordon Baird, the "technical guru" behind the website police said was linked to the Mafia and

Hells Angels, was given house arrest for 18-months and also paid a $400,000 fine in September 2016. Also sentenced was William Yu, from Thornhill, who was given a suspended sentence, a fine of $50,000 and 12 months probation. Two alleged Hells Angels’ associates of Baird, Andrew Bielli and Rob Barletta, also faced charges, but had different outcomes. Bielli was sentenced to 15 months in jail for committing an offence for a criminal organization while Barletta had his charges withdrawn. George Pandemenos, from Richmond Hill, Abraham Diles, from Stouffville, Vincenzo Russo, from Aurora, all had their book making and gambling charges withdrawn. Bing Gao, from Markham, also had his charges withdrawn.

The Class of 2017 has stepped into Richmond Hill sports history. Seven inductees were inducted into the Richmond Hill Sports Hall of Fame in an induction ceremony held on Oct. 5 at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts. Here’s some background about this year’s inductees: *Tracey Wainman The two-time Canadian women’s national champion represented Canada on three occasions on the world championships stage. She was named Canada’s female athlete of the year for 1981. Since retiring, Wainman has coached several junior skaters at national and international levels and currently is the di-

rector of the York Region Skating Academy. *Jamie Joslin - She played on an National Collegiate Athletic Association scholarship for women’s hockey at Robert Morris University. A defenceman, Joslin set records for goals and points at the Pittsburgh area school. She currently is the skills coach for the Central York Girls Hockey Association based in Aurora. *Scott Mabley - The late Richmond Hill resident played in the Ontario Hockey League for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and Oshawa Generals before he was selected 202nd overall by the Washington Capitals in the 1974 NHL draft. He was also chosen (192nd) by the Indianapolis Racers of the World

Hockey Association the same year. Later, he served in several capacities with the Richmond Hill International Midget Hockey Tournament. *Mary Ann Palmer As a youth, Palmer started playing softball in the Richmond Hill Minor Ball Association. She later went on to help organize and operate the Richmond Hill Women’s Slo-Pitch League and later, a ladies’ masters league. *Gianni Facchini - After playing in the Richmond Hill Soccer Club, Facchini embarked on a refereeing career in 1989 that spanned local leagues to national levels and eventually the professional ranks, including MLS. l See page 13

Team challenges others to collect for food banks TERESA LATCHFORD tlatchford@yrmg.com The Richmond Hill Peewee AA hockey team is challenging teams across the region to give back. Coach Marcus Middleton has run a number of charitable drives with his teams over the years and this year he wanted to do something different than in the past. His goal was to support a local cause to help his players learn how to give back to their own community. "I didn’t want to ask parents to hand over any more money, so I thought about the food bank," Middleton said. "It’s a local organization that helps support people right in our own backyards." He began by asking his players if any of them had ever gone hungry or

n unstoppable flood is headed our way. Ontario’s senior population is rising as baby boomers turn 65. Within 25 years, the number of seniors is projected to double to 4.6 million. At that time, one in every four people in this province will be a senior. While this massive wave of seniors has long been predicted, we are still ill prepared to provide housing to meet their needs. Muskoka resident Shelley Raymond encountered this problem 10 years ago while exploring options for her parents. "I found pretty much nothing outside of a retirement home, or long-term care, which are all booked to the nines. And hugely expensive," she said. The average monthly cost in an Ontario retirement home is $3,526, but you can pay more than $6,000 depending on where you live, states a 2017 seniors’ housing report by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. As your health declines, you’ll fork over more money for added care. "Retirement homes, in most cases, are profit-based and when you run out of money they will kick you out," Raymond said. "It’s already happening over and over again." Raymond was determined to find an alternative. Due to declining health, her mom moved into long-term care. Her dad couldn’t afford to stay in the family home, but refused to give up his independence. And Raymond worried he would outlive his money in a retirement home. Because Raymond’s grandfather died at an early age, his son chose living life to the fullest over saving for retirement. The responsibility to find an answer for her dad fell at Raymond’s feet because her two siblings lived far away. Raymond was crying about her plight to a friend in a Muskoka restaurant when a solution was born. The pair was talking about shared home ownership. The idea came to Raymond after she looked worldwide for an option that could give her dad independence, affordability, and social interaction. "A man sitting in the restaurant overheard me and he walked over and said ‘You can use my house because I have the same problem,’" Raymond said. Solterra Co-housing Ltd.

Seniors housing crisis looms Municipalities and community residents shouldn’t wait for the province to take a lead. Solutions will be found in grassroots initiatives: urban planner SARA CARSON scarson@simcoe.com was born. Raymond has a background in real estate, her husband is a talented carpenter, and her dad was a top planner in Canada. They renovated the Bracebridge home and four seniors moved in, splitting ownership between them. But it wasn’t over. The plan sparked an uphill battle with the municipality, planners, lawyers and retirement homes. "I was pretty sure when I

announced what we were doing I could do it legally, all I had to do was convince others. That was problematic," Raymond said. She won the legal challenges at a huge cost, but her goal was never just one house. "I knew we could do it across Canada. If I was having those problems 10 years ago, I knew the numbers would increase substantially as we moved

forward," Raymond said. Demand for shared home ownership is picking up substantially. Raymond helped create co-housing projects in Brechin, Port Perry, and Guelph. fund their own retirement. This will require innovation, planning, and bylaw and zoning changes. In this series, Metroland examines four options: cohousing with a stranger, cohousing with family, retiring up north in Elliot Lake and renovating your home to add accessible features with help from government grants. The Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) released a policy discussion paper in 2016 to recognize that the municipal sector is at the forefront of developing age-friendly communities, including affordable housing. Michael Jacek, a senior policy adviser, said AMO hasn’t come up with specific recommendations like shared home ownership, or co-housing. And they haven’t discussed bylaw and policy changes that may be required. "We’ve been operating more at a high-level to encourage people to do the age-friendly community planning. Creative solutions like that may be the result of some of these community plans," Jacek said. Urban planner John Lewis, an associate professor with the University of Waterloo’s school of planning, said there are municipalities, developers, and community groups facing the wave head on. He helped develop the province’s age-friendly planning guide. Lewis said top developers are leading the way with innovative housing solutions. "Once they have proven the market potential for that kind of housing stock, then generally the rest of the developers will follow suit," he said. Lewis said municipalities and community residents shouldn’t wait for the province to take a lead. Solutions will be found in grassroots initiatives, like Solterra Co-housing Ltd. "The feet on the ground literally consists of people who are residents of the communities driving these initiatives forward," Lewis said. l See page 20 for four housing solutions

Toronto Bird Club hosts colourful annual bird show HEATHER ROSEN "SQUAWK!!!" A scarlet macaw takes off in a flash of red, yellow and blue and sails through the air, landing some five metres away, much to the delight and awe of several dozen bird lovers. This is not your ordinary birdwatching expedition in the Costa Rican rainforest. It’s a typical evening at the Budgerigar & Foreign Bird Society’s monthly meeting in the heart of North York. Founded in 1938, the Budgerigar & Foreign Bird Society of Canada (BFBS) is one of Canada’s oldest and largest bird clubs, boasting a membership composed of pet-bird owners and breeders of all ages, and from all squawks of life. Club members own anywhere from a single pet bird to aviaries filled with one or more species of breeding birds. At the monthly meetings, typically several species are represented, ranging from small finches to a variety of large parrots, or hookbills. Members are encouraged to bring their healthy birds to the meetings to socialize them so that they will be psychologically equipped to deal with a variety of people and situations. The club is designed to provide support, education and a relaxed social atmosphere for bird owners and breeders to meet. The meetings afford members the opportunity to enjoy a regular guest speaker series, as well as bird shows and social events, which

include movie nights and the annual pre-Christmas get-together at a local restaurant. Guest speakers are often drowned out by chirps, squeals and the occasional raspy "HELLO!" but they take the regular interruptions in stride. The Budgerigar & Foreign Bird Society holds monthly meetings at its clubhouse from September to June, and also takes part in several Toronto-area events. The first, typically held in April, is the Pet Expo. With a collection of brilliantly-feathered birds on display, the club’s booth is always quite popular with show attendees, who have the opportunity to interact one-on-one with some of the world’s most beautiful avian species. The BFBS also hosts the annual Canadian National Cage Bird Show & Expo show every October. This show is largest of its kind in Canada. Last year, over 1,400 people from across the GTA, Ontario, Canada and other countries attended. The event features colourful bird displays; an international panel of professional judges; a slate of vendors of birds, bird food, toys, cages, accessories and crafts; a raffle; and more. The 58th edition of the show will be held on Saturday, Oct. 14 and Sunday, Oct. 15 at Richmond Green Sports Centre in Richmond Hill.
