Local church welcoming two refugee families By KIM ZARZOUR

Aimee Esparaz’s heart broke when her husband showed her the news item on his handheld tablet. A photograph showed a toddler lying face down as if he were sleeping, sea water gently lapping around the boy’s lifeless face. As she read the news story about threeyear-old refugee Aylan Kurdi, she was “instantly undone”. The Pickering mom was not the only one to be “jolted out of obliviousness” by the now iconic photograph. Her daughter, Alyssa, also saw the picture and wrote a blog that night that pierced her mother’s
heart: “I am so. angrily. horribly. sorry … My soul aches a thousand aches, but I don’t have the answers.” Esparaz decided she could offer one answer: she and others in her church, Richmond Hill and Yorkdale-based The Meeting House, could take action. That Sunday, the church was called to action, and Esparaz volunteered to head up a refugee committee. “What started as an interest from just a handful of people resulted in an outpouring of support that I have never experienced or seen before,” Esparaz said. Sometime in the next few weeks, the congregation will open doors and hearts to two Syrian
families seeking refuge. Working with the Mennonite Central Committee, the Richmond Hill and Toronto church volunteers have been connected with two families from Syria, each with two children under five, who are currently waiting in a refugee camp in Beirut. Esparaz and other members of The Meeting House congregation began fundraising in early September and now have raised more than $70,000, much of it coming from good-hearted donors outside of the church. One anonymous donor gave a matching pledge of $25,000. See ‘WALKING’, page 3.
