York Regional Police Sgt. Aaron Sidenberg calls in another sighting as media joined police in action as they nabbed distracted drivers while peering out the windows of public transit buses. Police also unveiled signs, to be featured on select buses in York Region, meant to remind drivers they are being watched.

KIM ZARZOUR kzarzour@yrmg.com Daniel Share-Strom was just three when it became clear what his mission in life would be - and that the mission would involve a microphone. He had always been a different child, not really interested in other kids, in toys, in communicating with others. But one day he and his mom were at garage sale and Daniel made a beeline for the toy box. He grabbed a microphone, stood in the middle of the driveway and began belting out "Blue Suede Shoes". It happened again at a family friend’s concert, when one of the musicians invited those in the audience to perform, and quiet little Daniel leaped on stage. Things at home weren’t so stellar, though. Daniel was a smart kid, but the things he did made him look dumb. He hated loud noises, couldn’t ride a bike, was socially awkward, clumsy, disorganized - and the worst part: these "problems" were what people used to identify him, rather than the many other things he did well. At 10, he was diagnosed with Aspergers syndrome and he and his family began the agonizing process of ensuring he got the supports he needed at school. He had been tapping into his love for the microphone at local weddings and funerals, but now Daniel had a mission he would use his "stage presence" to explain what it meant to have Aspergers. It started at Keswick

Maxine and son Daniel Strom, who has Aspergers, has been invited to be keynote speaker at prestigious conference in Atlanta, where he’ll be talking about what it’s like to have autism High School where he created a power point to share his insight with teachers and principals. Over the next 13 years, his mission mushroomed as he was invited to speak at bigger venues throughout Ontario - at colleges, universities, disabilities organizations. He spoke to Southlake hospital’s mental health professionals, to volunteers at 310Cope (York Region’s community crisis response), and in 2016, he gave a TedTalk at York University. It was the latter that got him noticed south of the border and this week, he has been invited to take his show on the road in Atlanta, where he will be keynote

speaker at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Autism Awareness Month Event, April 20. He is following in big footsteps: previous speakers include world-famous autism advocates Dr. Temple Grandin and actor Ed Asner who has a son with autism and two grandsons on the spectrum. Daniel and his mother, Maxine Share, recently moved to Bradford and they often speak at events together, wearing funny glasses they call "autism goggles" to show why the world needs to see autism differently. It is time, they say, to rebrand autism spectrum disorders, in the same way

’People are languishing in parents’ basements when they could be doing so much for the world.’ marketing has made waves on the issue of mental illness. Aspergers is a neurobiological disorder on the higher-functioning end of the autism spectrum and can impact everything from social and organizational skills, to physical activity, language and emotions. Daniel may hate toothbrushes, loud noises and washing his hair - but this is not all he wants us to know about him. Unfortunately, if you are autistic, he says, you are identified by the

things that are "wrong". "We are judged by our distance from so-called normal and by the list of things that have to be fixed," he says. Because autism impacts how one communicates, learns and interacts, the list of things to be "fixed" can be long - and as a result, people with autism grow up feeling broken, he says. "People tend cringe or at very least have preconceived notions of what autism is - someone who can’t

be taught, who’s going to be a problem, who might be at best like Rain Man or Sheldon from Big Bang theory." In fact a surprising number of successful people fall on the autism spectrum, and he believes it’s time for them to "come out of the closet". Those who speak out about depression are helping destigmatize depression and the same approach can help those with autism, he says. Leaving the status quo, he says, is deadly. Maxine, who acts as administrative assistant to Daniel and helps him write his speeches, agrees. "What we’re doing now is killing people," she says. "This system is not working." Those with autism have nine times the suicide rate, she says, they die years earlier than the average person and have 80 per cent unemployment even though they often test very highly and are often extremely skilled in one area. "People are languishing in parents’ basements when they could be doing so much for the world," adds Daniel. Better teacher training, curriculum that can beadjusted to reflect the pace of those on the spectrum, a publiceducation campaign featuring those on the spectrum and encouragement foremployers to hire people with autism can all lead to change, he says. "Autism is not a defect or a mental illness, and it is not a catastrophe. It is simply another way of experiencing the world."

ABOUT US

Time for local elections to embrace technology

TheLiberal.

The Internet has become an increasingly large presence in our lives. More and more, it’s the means through which we communicate, gather information, enjoy entertainment and even do business. Despite all of that, however, few opportunities exist for citizens to take part in the democratic process electronically. Markham has offered Internet voting during the advanced polling period since 2003, while Ajax introduced electronic voting for the 2014 municipal election. Earlier this month, Newmarket council voted to become the first municipality in York Region to move to a fully electronic voting model for the 2018 election that will allow citizens to cast their vote online or over the telephone instead of the traditional paper ballot method. Residents will still be able to attend a voting location in-person, if they wish, on certain dates and times. Just this week, Bradford West Gwillimbury council voted to eliminate paper ballots and replace them with Internet and telephone voting for next year’s municipal election. The town’s deputy clerk, Tara Reynolds, described electronic voting as a win-win for its convenience, low cost and potential to boost turnout, while also noting that physical electronic polling stations would also be set up for those needing assistance or who simply prefer to get out and vote. At the same time, the City of Vaughan recently considered the idea of electronic voting only to stick with optical scan tabulators to count ballots for the 2018 election. Staff will report back in 2020 on security and implementation measures in time for the 2022 election, but the decision runs headlong against the winds of change. Privacy and security concerns cropped up among Bradford councillors, but Reynolds noted that additional layers of security, beyond a PIN number and birth date entry, could be implemented. Most of us already do our banking online and many of us file our taxes electronically as well, so allowing citizens to cast their ballots via the Internet makes a lot of sense and numerous ways exist to ensure the integrity of the process. Politicians always seem to lament voter turnout figures following an election and electronic voting is an inexpensive way to make it easier for people to participate, especially in areas where geography can pose difficulties reaching a polling station. Every municipality should be working toward implementing electronic voting ideally in time for the 2018 campaign. It’s time for local democracy to enter the 21st century.

On the night of April 6, during the snowstorm, you stopped at an accident scene on the York-Durham Road just south of Regional Road 8. town, both regional roads and town roads. Even side streets that have no building going on are filthy. Most sidewalks are a muddy mess, I sure am glad I am not a pedestrian being splashed on the way to the store or transit stop. No wonder people wear black and other dark colours, the only clothes that will last. So tell the safety people to stop telling people to wear light colours at night it isn’t practical and affordable. They are wasting their time and our money. This year is exceptionally poor under the watch of this council. Does the mayor not care?

Obviously contractors do not care. (At least at one time the observatory hill contractor did do some cleaning but not enough.) The mud spraying continuously onto the windshields of cars is not only a mess, but a potential safety hazard. It is time to go to all the builders and developers and make them flush the streets at their cost and pass their costs onto the buyers of the buildings. That is only fair. The rest of us need to be treated better than the garbage treatment we are getting from the town and region. Staff and councillors should be terminated. The town needs to make the region do its part within our boundaries. Nick Bird Richmond Hill

Canadian CRISIS

Market crash/ Great Depression The Great Crash of October 1929 resulted when panic struck Wall Street, Toronto and Montreal resulting in billions of dollars in lost revenues for investors and businesses in wild stock selloffs. It was followed in 1930 and beyond by the Great Depression as companies laid off thousands of workers and many shut down. Unemployment rose to a record 25 per cent and, in a time when there was no social safety net, people struggled to make ends meet. Only the outbreak of war in 1939-40 and the need for war supplies brought employment and industry back.

Police take to transit l Continued from front

"bus ride-along". Media was invited to tag along April 13 aboard one of their newly-"wrapped" buses displaying the image of a YRP officer leaning out the window, writing a ticket. It’s a not-so-subtle reminder that police are peering down at you from York Region buses and if you want to avoid a hefty fine, you best put down that phone. York Regional Police Traffic Enforcement Unit, in conjunction with York Region Transit, launched the campaign this week to fight distracted driving. The offence - use of cellphones in particular - remains a significant safety concern for drivers and pedestrians, according to traffic bureau Insp. Randy Slade. Since January, the YRP has been riding public transit to watch for drivers using their cellphones or other hand-held devices, then relaying the information to officers patrolling the roadways. Now they’ve added the "bus wraps", depicting a police officer leaning out of the bus window, on five transit vehicles travelling throughout the region. The campaign is two-pronged: while drivers are nabbed for using their devices, bus passengers see first-hand just how dangerous the roads can be for them as pedestrians. Those same passengers are often eager to help police by looking for offenders from their own bus seats and sharing with the police officer on board. It didn’t take long for the reporters, photographers and camera operators to get into the spirit of things during Friday’s ride-along. As the bus travelled south on Yonge Street to Highway 7, Sgt. Aaron Sidenberg immediately spotted two drivers surreptitiously tapping on their phones. He communicated the info via radio to nearby unmarked police vehicles and within minutes, those drivers were facing $490 fines and three lost demerit points. Soon, the ride-along media were joining in, peering into cars ("like an Easter egg hunt for adults", someone joked), pointing out other offenders - a female in a white Cherokee, a man in a beige convertible - and laughing to see how many drivers scrambled to hide the phones beneath their legs when they realized they were caught. One driver caught with his phone was nabbed for much more: three-times-suspended license, no insurance, on probation and not allowed to drive his car. A total of five drivers were nabbed in the short trip. Earlier that day, police caught 16 distracted drivers between Yonge and Mulock and Steeles, including one using a full-sized iPad, Sidenberg said. Buses provide the perfect high vantage point, he said, especially for peering into pickup trucks and cube vans. "Our message is: put it down," said Slade. "There is nothing that important that can’t wait until you get to your destination."

Adolescents are more difficult to see, larger than a poppy seed and almost translucent. 2) Shower Showering washes off unattached ticks. Don’t try to burn them off or apply other products. A survivor’s story: Filippo Rocca, a 100-year-old Italian Army veteran, shares the story of his five-year struggle for survival as a prisoner of war in Africa and England during the Second World War. Conscription, a linguistic divide: The decision to begin a draft split our country deeply; almost every francophone MP rejected it while nearly every anglophone MP supported it. After the Bloom: A daughter’s search for her mother reveals her family’s past in a Japanese internment camp during the Second World War. Epic in scope, intimate in style, Leslie Shimotakahara’s novel blurs between the present and the ever-present past. Huntsville murder: In 2004 a 66-year-old retiree was murdered in his Huntsville home. Despite some promising leads and a $50,000 reward for information the case remains unsolved.
