Toronto Mayor John Tory talks to reporters about regional transit expansion at city hall on Tuesday with, from left, Richmond Hill Mayor Dave Barrow, York Region Chair Wayne Emmerson and Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti.

York politicians gain Tory co-operation SIMONE JOSEPH sjoseph@yrmg.com Toronto Mayor John Tory has changed his mind and is now supporting the Yonge North subway

extension, marking an important step for York Region’s transit goals, says Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti. "It was an important step forward - that was critical," Scarpitti

said Wednesday. At a May 9 news conference, Tory had said it wasn’t in Toronto’s interests to support the Yonge subway extension until funding for Toronto’s relief line

had been secured because the extension would add passengers from outside the city to the already crowded subway network.

A SONGWRITING WILLS LAWYER “Photos in a Drawer” On Stage As well as being a Wills lawyer, I am also a The Wills Lawyer professional songwriter. I am so proud to work with two amazing co-writers, Lewis Manne and Wendy Watson. Songs we have written are playing on radio across the country. Years back, Reuters did a feature story on me entitled “Canadian Lawyer Pens Legal Hurtin Music”. The first line in that article reads, “When he is not working to settle family feuds for his clients, a Canadian lawyer writes songs about them getting airplay from Toronto to San Francisco”. I have had a passion for songwriting since my early teenage years, long before I gave any thought to becoming a lawyer. My late parents, Rose and Jack, inspired me to keep this passion alive and to keep writing. I wrote and I wrote, and when I met Lewis and Wendy, my songwriting life changed. They turned my words into songs that have touched Les Kotzer so many lives. I have written songs in honour of my late mother, my late father, and a song entitled “Crying To The Moon” in memory of my late brother Joel, who I cherished. I am so thrilled that the very talented Alessia De Gasperis of York Region is singing “Crying To The Moon”. The song is playing on the Jewel radio network across Canada (88.5 FM in Toronto). So many people have contacted me to tell me how much they love the song and how much they love Alessia De Gasperis’ performance. It is also being played on Wave FM 94.7. Due to the success of “Crying To The Moon”, Alessia recorded another one of my songs entitled, “Just Say (It’s a Beautiful Day)”. This song was launched on 105.9 The Region. It is now on their regular playlist. You can hear these songs and my other songs on my songwriting website songwritinglawyer.com. You can also hear a songwriter spotlight interview I did with host Rosie Ferguson of 105.9 The Region. I am so proud to announce that an amazing Canadian vocalist and performer, Brian Roman, has recently recorded a song that is very special to my heart entitled, “Photos In A Drawer”. The song pays tribute to my late mother Rose, who always felt that her greatest treasures were in the faces of her family. After she passed away, I was walking through her room and came across a drawer filled with photos of my childhood, seeing family and friends frozen in time as they were so many years ago. I had to write a song based on those photos from the past. Brian Roman has a very interesting life story. At the age of 42 and a father of four, he made the life altering decision to pursue his dream. He left a career in the life insurance business after 20 years. In April of 2006, he staged a career launching concert at Toronto’s Roy Thompson Hall. He had booked the hall on his own and then worked diligently to sell tickets. He was an unlikely candidate because he says he did not play any instruments, had never been in a band, not even part time, he could not read music and had no idea what key he sang in. Hard work and determination paid off. The show was a sold out success, and the story was featured on radio stations, in magazines, on television and was the feature story the following morning on the front page of a major Toronto newspaper. Over the next 11 years, Brian toured across Canada and the United States. He said he has shared stages with the likes of The Barenaked Ladies, The Nylons, Rita MacNeil and Jose Feliciano. After spending many months at a time on the road, playing to sold out crowds and seeing his name in lights on the same marquees as major celebrities and well known artists, I think it can be said that Brian is truly living his dream. While touring the U.S., Brian discovered that theatres were struggling to appeal to a younger demographic. He felt there was a need for a show that would reach many age groups. He felt his group Roc Opra Natra was the answer. This group brings together the three dynamic voices of Christopher Dallo, Danny Scott and Brian Roman. These performers weave a tapestry of melodies from Sinatra to Rod Stewart to Josh Groban to Bocelli. On May 30, 2017, they will do a rare Canadian performance at 8:00 p.m. in the Markham Theatre. During the show, Brian will be performing my song “Photos In A Drawer”. If my mom, dad and brother Joel were here, they would be so proud. Brian told me that he and his group are doing the show to help a family they know that is in desperate need of financial help. According to Brian, all players in the show are donating their time to help this family. For more information or to get tickets, you can go to brianroman.com or markham.ca or call 647-227-8101. SIMON MARTIN smartin@yrmg.com The life of dairy farmer is not sexy. It consists of milking cows 365 days a year for decades on end. A vacation? Not likely. You’ll be hard-pressed to fit in an afternoon wedding in between milking sessions. That secluded lifestyle was thrust into the public eye last month when U.S. President Donald Trump spoke out against the Canadian dairy supply management system. It certainly was surprising for Whitchurch-Stouffville dairy farmer Brad Hulshof. He is one of around 25 dairy farmers left in York Region. "I don’t think any dairy farmer was expecting to get shots fired from the U.S. president," Hulshof said. Schomberg dairy farmer John Phillips says the Canadian Dairy industry is often misunderstood. "I’m surprised and not surprised," he said. "We didn’t do anything wrong." All of it sudden it seems politicians in the United States and Canada find milk great again as it becomes somewhat of a political football. Conservative Party leadership favourite Maxime Bernier’s most talked about policy is his plan to phase out supply management in Canada’s milk, chicken and egg business. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had to come out in defence of the country’s supply management system after Trump’s comments and the fuss it stirred. "It was a surprising turn of events that brought agriculture to the forefront," Hulshof said. "The (supply

The Hulshof family have been dairy farmers in Stouffville for 50 years. Brad Hulshof, along with other farmers, aren’t too worried about U.S president Donald Trump’s tough talk toward the Canadian dairy industry. management) system works really well. We are the envy of the dairy farming world." Trump made his comments in Wisconsin, which is the dairy engine of the United States. Grassland Dairy Products had announced that it would be reducing its milk intake. As a result, 75 U.S. dairy farms would need to find another place to sell their milk. They took aim at the Canadian dairy industry for creating a new classification of milk to compete against milk proteins that were largely imported to

Canada. Hulshof didn’t think the criticism held much weight. Milk proteins, or diafiltered milk, wasn’t covered in the NAFTA agreement so U.S. producers had unfettered access to the Canadian market. As the demand for this product became greater, the dairy farmers decided they had to do something. "We competitively priced our dairy to match them," Hulshof said. Phillips echoed that sentiment. He said Canada’s supply management system ensures that there isn’t

an overproduction of milk which can lead to a market crash in the industry. "The United States have bailed out dairy twice in the last 20 years," he said. The Canadian government doesn’t have to give any money to keep farmers afloat, he said. What mystifies Hulshof is that the United States actually has a trade surplus with Canada when it comes to dairy products. "We allow import into our country," he said. "There are lots of imports that still come in." The Dairy Farmers of

Ontario pointed out in the wake of Trump’s comments that the United States enjoys a significant trade surplus in the dairy trade. According to the DFO, the trade surplus was roughly $445 million in 2016. While supply management works well for the dairy farmers, there are many who think it is a bad system for the consumer. York University economics professor Bernie Wolf is one who is anti-supply management. He said the problem is Canadians end up paying an artificially

high price for milk because the system doesn’t allow for market forces to drive down the price. "That has the most impact on the poor people in society," he said. Another unseen cost of the system, according to Wolf, is that the Canadian government has to sacrifice other things while making international trade agreements to protect the "sacred cow" that is Canadian dairy. If Canadians could see what we gave up to protect our national dairy industry, they might not be in favour of the system, Wolf said. Not every economist agrees. University of Guelph economics professor Mike von Massow said the current system is working well. "The benefits accrue to dairy producers and rural communities," he said. The problem with dairy is it is a highly perishable product, so if processors say they can’t take anymore product there’s not a lot farmers can do with it, von Massow said. While some claim the supply management system makes the cost of milk higher than it is in the United States, von Massow said Canadians pay more for food across the board than people in the United States. Canadians pay more for beef, bread and pop, which are industries that don’t have supply management. One final benefit of the system in Canada is the animal welfare aspect of it. "We don’t have the same number of large, 1,000-cow dairies as they do in the United States," he said. "Cows in Canadian dairies on average live longer and are productive longer. We don’t push them as hard."

NOTICE OF INTENTION TO DESIGNATE PROPERTY OF CULTURAL HERITAGE VALUE OR INTEREST IN THE MATTER OF THE LAND AND PREMISES IN THE TOWN OF RICHMOND HILL, IN THE PROVINCE OF ONTARIO HEREAFTER DESCRIBED AS: Property Description: Lot 17, Plan 7032 and Part of Block C, Plan 511 as in R469495, Town of Richmond Hill, Regional Municipality of York (PIN 03172-0212 (LT)) Municipal Address: 16-18 Lorne Avenue, Town of Richmond Hill (The William Trench House) Town File No.: D12-07298 TAKE NOTICE THAT the Council of The Corporation of the Town of Richmond Hill intends to designate the above-noted property, including land and building, as a property of cultural heritage value or interest under Part IV, section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act, R.S.O. 1990, Chapter 0.18, as amended. Statement of Cultural Heritage Value or Interest William Trench (b.1832 - d.1896) opened the Trench Carriage Works at the corner of Lorne Avenue and Yonge Street in 1864. Soon after the Trench business became a major employer in Richmond Hill and at the height of its production provided all the stagecoaches that operated along Yonge Street. William Trench served as the Reeve of Richmond Hill from 1875 to 1879 and again in 1881 and 1882. He also served as a trustee on the Board of Education in York County. He was a director of the Mechanic’s Institute, treasurer of the Masonic Lodge, and president of the Agricultural Society. In 1875 the Town named Trench Street in honour of William and they were also major donors to the construction of the Richmond Hill United Church. Thomas Henry Trench (1868-1957) was the son of William who took over the business when his father died in 1896 and lived in the same house at 16-18 Lorne Avenue as his father lived until his passing in 1957. Thomas never married, but took on civic responsibility including Reeve from 1919 to 1925 and again from 1940 to 1942. During his time on Council, he oversaw the installation of the first waterworks infrastructure in the Village. He also was a member of the Board of Education and was instrumental in the construction of a new High School in the Village. Similar to his father he was also involved with the United Church and the Masonic Lodge, achieving Grand Steward during his tenure. When Thomas took over management of the business the carriage industry was beginning its transition towards the horseless carriage. From the onset of his ownership he made the decision not to convert the Trench Carriage Works to an automobile business and instead focused on utilizing his assets for real estate purposes. Soon after taking control of the business he purchased additional land to the south of Lorne Avenue and Centre Street. In 1914 he converted part of the carriage works building located at 10117-10119 Yonge Street into retail outlets with apartments above. In 1915 Thomas entered into a contract with the Standard Bank to construct a new branch at 10111 Yonge Street. Today, the original Trench Carriage Works building at 10121-10123 Yonge Street, the converted portion at 10117-10119 Yonge Street and the Standard Bank at 10111 Yonge Street are all designated under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act. The house, which is located immediately adjacent to the Trench Carriage works at 10121-10123 Yonge Street contains significant associative and contextual value in relation to the intimate day to day involvement in the family business and the development of the nearby lands at the beginning of the 20th century. Description of Heritage Attributes Key exterior attributes that embody the heritage value of the William Trench House include: - The one and half storey late Ontario Gothic style dwelling constructed in c.1888 including the c.1896 addition located to the east; and - The location of the dwelling on Lorne Avenue, immediately adjacent to the Trench Carriage Works at 10121-10123 Yonge Street. Additional Information For more information respecting the proposed designation, please contact Isa James, Urban Design/Heritage Planner, Planning & Regulatory Services Department at (905) 771-5529 or by e-mail at isa.james@richmondhill.ca. Contact can also be made by fax at (905) 771-2404. Notice of Objection Any person who objects to the proposed designation shall, within 30 days after the publication of this notice, serve on the Town Clerk of the Town of Richmond Hill, a Notice of Objection setting out the reason for the objection and all relevant facts. The last day to appeal the proposed designation is June 26, 2017. Service may be made by delivery personally to the Town Clerk or by Regular Mail at the following address: Town of Richmond Hill Telephone: 905-771-8800 225 East Beaver Creek Road Fax: 905-771-2502 Richmond Hill, Ontario L4B 3P4 E-mail: clerks@richmondhill.ca Stephen M.A. Huycke, Town Clerk Dated this 25th day of May, 2017. A York Region resident has set Facebook on fire with surveillance video from her Woodbridge home showing a woman she suspects was knocking on random doors to see if anyone’s home. The homeowner says that when she didn’t answer, the woman - who was covering her mouth with her scarf and turning her back to the camera - appears to have alerted two males located in an SUV nearby. The men, wearing hats and backpacks, then exited the vehicle and came to the home’s side gate, she added. "We were able to capture from our neighbours’ video surveillance that they were attempting to get through the gate," wrote Debra Cossaro Di Benedetto on Facebook. However, when the homeowner finally answered the door after a few minutes of the woman continually knocking, the three went back to their vehicle. Possibly the most intriguing part of the post was the conversation the individual and the woman shared. "I did not answer the door as I did not recognize the person and was not expecting anyone," Cossaro Di Benedetto wrote. "She continued to ring the bell and each time, would cover her mouth with the scarf and turn her back to the camera!" After between three and five minutes, the woman was still at the door, she said. "From inside the house, I said: ’Hello! Can I help you?’" she wrote. "She replies: ’uh, John here?’After I answered that there was no John, she asked if this was No. 48 and I said it was not, she turned and left!" York Regional Police Const. Andy Pattenden said officers received a call about this incident on Gorman Avenue at about 2 p.m. About 5 p.m., police received a call from a house on Chatfield Drive, which intersects with Gorman, about a break and enter sometime before 5 p.m. involving theft of money and jewelry.

Weathered flags should be grounded

TheLiberal.

With Canada Day celebrations, marking the 150th year in our nation’s history, rapidly approaching, flags will be flying from coast to coast. In many cases, bright, pristine Canadian flags will be front and centre at legions, government offices, businesses, and private residences. They’ll be prominent at countless special events and even attached to cars and trucks. And, unfortunately, there might be a few cases where our cherished symbol looks less than pristine, maybe even a bit ragged and threadbare. It might surprise some to realize that there are some pretty specific rules regarding the display of our nation emblem, the Maple Leaf. Policies are in place to It might surprise govern how the flag is some to realize flown from everything from attaching it to a vehicle or that there are building, to suspending it above a street, or using it some pretty on a flagpole. specific rules For example, if a flag is suspended above a street, regarding the the rule is: "The upper part of the leaf (the points of the display of our leaf) should face north in nation emblem, an east-west street. upper part of the the Maple Leaf. leaf"The should face east in a north-south street." If you want to hang a flag flat against a surface, here’s the rule you’ll need to follow: "If hung horizontally, the upper part of the leaf (the points of the leaf) should be up and the stem down. "If hung vertically, the flag should be placed so that the upper part of the leaf points to the left and the stem to the right from the point of view of the observer facing the flag." Want to fold your flag? The ceremonial folding of our national flag involves six to eight people following six specific steps. Has your flag seen better days? "When a flag becomes tattered and is no longer in a suitable condition for use, it should be destroyed in a dignified way." We’re not quite sure what constitutes a ’dignified’ disposal, but we do concur with the notion that the Maple Leaf should fly only in a pristine condition. To display Canada’s national flag is to demonstrate one’s patriotism and appreciation for our good fortune in being able to live in the best country on the planet. To display a weathered, shabby version is to do a disservice to this most important symbol of our nation.

• LETTERS TO THE EDITOR • Council should support shark fin ban To say I am appalled and embarrassed with and by Richmond Hill council would be the grossest understatement. Today during the committee of the whole meeting, several delegates stepped forward to educate council about the Senate Bill S-238 to ban the importation of shark fins in Canada. A motion of support passed unanimously in Toronto in April. The delegates included the family of late filmmaker Rob Stewart, Toronto Coun. Kristyn Tam-Wong and Humane Society International representative Michael Bernard. Are we not embarrassed

that we have no awareness of who Toronto filmmaker Rob Stewart is, having created and directed an internationally award winning film that has changed laws in over 100 countries and won over 40 international awards? That was bad enough. It seems our mayor has been remiss in preparing for the meeting. I’d be embarrassed to announce that this is the first time I’m hearing the issue. Really? It’s been on the news since January and on the agenda for a week. The movie came out in 2007. Having said that though, and now having been brought up to speed, why jump in to be the first to vote against the motion to protect sharks for apparently no good reason? Is that leadership? Further-

more, we are not solely "lobbyists." Every neighbour and resident I have spoken to supports this bill. Same as the statistic Coun. Wong referred to; 81 per cent of Canadians support this. Why don’t you? All we, the delegates and residents, are looking for is support for this bill to send a strong message to Ottawa that we are in favour of banning the importation of shark fins. Thank you to Coun. Cilevitz for bringing it forward despite the ignorant climate on council, thank you Coun. Chan for suggesting council have more time to review the issue and Coun. Muench for supporting the bill. Richmond Hill residents, please call your councillor to let them know you support Bill S-238 to prevent the importation of shark fins in Canada.

Our shark populations are almost extinct due to the cruel shark finning practices. The councillors need to hear from you to do this, they do not have the inner fortitude to represent the constituents without your call.Roxiane EngineerRichmond Hill Please put garbage out in morning My name is Charlotte and I am nine years old. I am very upset. People are putting their garbage out at night and the animals are getting into it and tearing big holes, then the wind is blowing it all over the community. If we put the garbage out in the morning, then the nighttime animals wouldn’t come out and get it. I hope you agree with me. Charlotte Hamley Newmarket

“Just watch me!” Perhaps the most famous quote ever attributed to Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau can be traced to the October Crisis of 1970. It happened when the FLQ (Front de liberation du Quebec) kidnapped British diplomat James Cross and Quebec cabinet minister Pierre Laporte, who was subsequently murdered. Trudeau then invoked the never-beforeimposed War Measures Act, which limited civil liberties. The police arrested and detained 497 people, all but 62 of whom were released without charges. It is believed federal imposition of the War Measures Act helped push support for independence in Quebec.

whole May 15 to pass a resolution, as did 18 other municipalities across the country, supporting action to stop the shark fin trade. It was up for a final vote Monday night, but the councillor opted to withdraw the motion "for strategic reasons". Despite appeals at last week’s committee meeting from the family of Rob Stewart, a filmmaker and shark advocate who died last January, Humane Society International, students and Toronto Counc. Kristyn Wong-Tam, it appeared a majority of council had reservations about the ban. Some councillors said they hadn’t heard from residents concerned about the issue and questioned whether Richmond Hill has any business voting on a federal matter. Ben Leung, with the

KIM ZARZOUR kzarzour@yrmg.com A potential ban on shark finning has been pulled off the menu at Richmond Hill council. Councillors were expected to decide this week whether to declare the town’s support for Bill S-238, a federal ban on importation of shark fins into Canada. Described by critics as "barbaric, inhuman and wasteful", shark finning is the practice of cutting off a shark’s fin and tossing the creature back into the ocean where it dies a slow and painful death. The fins are used to create a traditional Chinese soup, sometimes served at weddings as a status symbol. Ward 5 Coun. Karen Cilevitz presented a motion to the committee of the

Richmond Hill Markham Chinese Business Association and Responsible Governance Alliance, also spoke to councillors, questioning whether sharks can feel pain. Sharks are useful for human consumption, he said, adding education is a better way to protect the ocean. Michael Bernard, with Humane Society International, agreed. Sharks play a crucial role in marine ecosystems but are in the midst of a human-induced mass extinction, he told councillors. In an interview after council’s meeting this week Cilevitz said she withdrew the motion reluctantly because she did not have council’s support. "It’s going well in Ottawa and I didn’t want a negative vote in Richmond Hill to affect it in any way."

Cooking for one is a lot of work.

MARNEY BECK It was an emotional farewell May 17 for retiring food bank manager Brenda Ewart, leaving the Richmond Hill Community Food Bank in June after 26 years at the helm. Her three adult children, husband Bob, board members and volunteers lauded her talents and passion at the annual volunteer appreciation dinner held at the Thornhill Golf and Country Club. One of the most heartfelt moments was the hug given to Ewart by Donna Smith, the founder and first manager of the food bank when it started at Richmond Hill United Church. Smith said it was a "privilege and honour" to offer words of praise and farewell for Ewart, describing her as a "constant caring and devoted person, a hard worker - physically, mentally and emotionally always showing a smile

and great love." Smith noted that when the food bank opened in 1986 it was a "short-term solution" until Richmond Hill residents could benefit from more affordable housing, better daycare options and a living wage. "How naive we were. Today food banks across Canada are still needed for the same reasons." She noted that when the food bank started 30 years ago, it served about 1,945 people each month and "not much has changed" proof the food bank, now located at 55 Newkirk Rd., is still badly needed in our community. "You may leave the food bank," Smith told Ewart, "but the food bank won’t leave you." Deputy mayor of Richmond Hill, Vito Spatafora, presented Ewart with a certificate of appreciation from the town, and board chair Fergie Reynolds read out words of praise on a

Food bank manager retires after 26 years plaque from Richmond Hill MP Majid Jowhari. The volunteer board presented Ewart with flowers from Tammy Scott of Flower Smart, jewelry and a cookbook signed by many volunteers and admirers. Certificates of appreciation were also presented to numerous volunteers for five years of service, 10 years, and Becky Vent was given her 20-year certificate. "Week after week, volunteers give of their time to help those in need, showing kindness and compassion and treating all with dignity and respect," said the board chair. Another emotional moment came at the end of the evening when Ewart announced to all present that the board had hired a replacement manager, Lee Reynolds, herself a food bank volunteer, who came forward and hugged Ewart to loud applause from the room.

What does pride mean to you? To me, it’s pride in my sexuality, family and in my community. To someone else, it might be pride in their culture, their gender identity, their disability, or pride in being an ally to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community. Pride has no single face, no single definition, no single experience and knows no boundaries. Pride can be strong, pride can and is about being authentic, pride can be liberating, pride can be loving yourself and who you see in the mirror, but pride can also be scary. Pride can leave someone who is questioning their sexual orientation and/or gender identity and expression completely immobilized. It can also be isolating, confusing and frightening for the family, friends

and allies of those whom identify and may be coming out at LGBTQ. Pride is about being able to stand proud in your own community and know that the support, resources and education is available. Pride is about continually building our region into a safe space for the LGBTQ community and beyond, making sure our region reflects and celebrates its diversity and ensuring inclusion for individuals. Someone you know and love is LGBTQ and may not have the courage to stand proud in celebration of their authentic self. With Pride in the 905 right around the corner, there are several opportunities for residents of York Region to celebrate love, diversity, inclusion and basic human rights throughout the month of June. This is an opportunity to show your support for those who need it the most. To kick things off this year, join Pflag - York Re-

gion’s LGBTQ support, resource and education network - for the first annual York Region Family Pride. Pflag, with the support and partnership of the Town of Richmond Hill, will host the first pride event of 2017 in York Region, which will provide a fun and welcoming safe space where you can teach your little ones and family members about inclusion and the diversity in sexual orientation and gender identity and expression. Join us on June 3 at Town Park in Richmond Hill, next to Elgin Barrow Arena, from noon to 4 p.m. for an event that will be jampacked with entertainment for the whole family. Enjoy the unbelievable Doo Doo the International Clown, the Magic of Aaron Matthews, kids DJ Dance Parties, bouncy castles, community partners, games and so more. Amanda Knegje is president of Pflag York Region.

"The commute for Toronto transit riders won’t get any better with a Yonge Street North subway extension. In fact, extending the Yonge subway north might make that commute worse," he said. York Region politicians expressed anger in response to Tory’s comments last week. "The Yonge subway extension should not be held hostage," Markham Coun. Valerie Burke wrote in an email. Richmond Hill Coun. Godwin Chan called Tory’s approach a "divisive tactic." The subway would extend north from Finch Station to Hwy. 7, into York Region. Tory has said a downtown relief Line is needed to take pressure off both major subway lines. The Yonge extension has the backing of provincial Liberals, but because the TTC is in charge of delivering the project, the city’s co-operation is necessary for it to go ahead. The federal government had asked York Region and Toronto to submit their priorities for transit funding. York Region chairperson and CEO Wayne Emmerson, Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua, Richmond Hill Mayor Dave Barrow and Scarpitti met with Tory for a private breakfast Monday. "We said we will support your relief line if you continue to support the Yonge subway extension," Emmerson said. The York Region leaders pointed out that both Toronto and York Region have the same problems, such as not enough funding and overcrowding, Barrow said. So, what changed Tory’s mind in the end? "I think he realized we need to work together. If we don’t, we will be years behind," Emmerson said. Asked about the pivot, Tory said Tuesday that since his news conference last week he had spoken with York Region leaders and decided it would be better to co-operate. Scarpitti called Tory’s about-face "an important milestone", adding that failing to secure his co-operation would have been "a setback" since momentum was building in the other direction. "If we hadn’t got past that, it could have pushed it (the subway extension) back." Tory met with Emmerson, Scarpitti, and Barrow in his office Tuesday morning before the trio spoke at a meeting of his executive committee. Emmerson said he is expecting a federal funding announcement in the next few weeks to pay for the design and build of the subway extension. The TTC and Toronto city planners have long insisted the relief line must be built before the Yonge extension. That’s because the extension would add riders to Line 1, which is expected to be at capacity by 2031. Fledgling brewery wins against some highly-regarded competition ADAM MARTIN-ROBBINS amartinrobbins@yrmg.com Lake Wilcox Brewing Company has announced its arrival on the craft beer scene -- with authority. The fledgling Vaughan brewery snapped up three medals at the 2017 Ontario Brewing Awards held in Toronto April 27. Leading the pack at the awards for Lake Wilcox was its Dunkel Weiss, produced in small-batches and sold exclusively through the brewery, which grabbed a gold medal in the Dunkelweizen category. "We knew it was topnotch," said Dave De Ciantis, who co-founded the brewery with his longtime

friend and fellow Oak Ridges resident, Ray Nicolini. "We had people come by and sample it, they were beer judges from different communities, and they said, ’Wow, you guys have got something pretty special here.’" The Dunkel was one of 11 beers Lake Wilcox submitted to the annual competition, which featured more than 120 breweries competing in 48 categories. Two of Lake Wilcox’s mainstay brews also grabbed awards. The Black Hops IPA, Belgian-style IPA with a 5.5 per cent alcohol content, snagged a silver medal in the Dark IPA category while the firm’s inaugural brew, Mad Quacker, captured a bronze in the Amber Lager slot. Both brews are available at The Beer Store, while Mad Quacker can also be purchased through the LCBO. "At least two of our four core beers got an award,

Home improvement app creator lands spot on ’Dragons’ Den’ ADAM MARTIN-ROBBINS amartinrobbins@yrmg.com Does the thought of trying to find a reputable handyman to renovate your outdated bathroom or build you a new deck fill you with dread? Ross DiStefano knows that feeling. He went through something similar and thought there must be a better way. The experience spurred the Vaughan resident to develop a smartphone app dubbed Quote This Project. Launched in the GTA two months ago, it boasts thousands of active users and has 270 tradespeople signed up to tackle projects ranging from kitchen and bathroom renovations to lawn mowing and roof repair, among many others. "It’s a very simple idea and we’re going to take it and revolutionize the way people are getting projects done in their homes today," DiStefano, 43, said. How simple is it?

Steve Somerville/Metroland

Ross DiStefano has developed a new app that connects homeowners with renovators who bid or quote them on projects. Step 1: Download the free app and complete your profile. Step 2: Post an image and a description of your project. Step 3: Wait for quotes to roll in from tradespeople.

Step 4: Sort through the contractors’ bids and invite the ones you feel can meet your budget and timeline to meet with you. The tradespeople bidding on your project pay $19.99 monthly to gain ac-

cess to customer postings. "On the tradesperson’s side, he no longer has to waste his time going around quoting everything that has a pulse," said DiStefano, who moved into the tech field about six years ago af-

ter many years as a landscaper. DiStefano came up with the idea after struggling to find someone to install patio stones in his yard. He and friend Tony Bonnelo were halfway through the installation when DiStefano had to leave town for work. His wife, Margaret, suggested putting out a call on Facebook for someone to finish the job. A few responses trickled in, but no one could meet his timeline. "Tony said, ’Why don’t you create an app to automate the process so it goes to those who can meet the timeline and (the app) was born,’" DiStefano recalled. He developed Quote This Project with business partner Dmitri Li of Thornhill. The pair previously created a geolocation app to connect trade show exhibitors with attendees. Quote This Project has taken off and is now available in Canada, the U.S., UK, Australia and it will soon be

in France. It has also caught the attention of the folks at CBC’s Dragons’ Den. DiStefano and Li auditioned for a spot and were among roughly 150 entrepreneurs, out of about 3,500, chosen to appear on Season 12, airing this fall, he said. "When we were giving our first pitch at our audition, the producer said, ’Where have you been all my life.’ They downloaded it right in front of us and posted a project," DiStefano recalled. He’s sworn to secrecy about what happened on their episode, but says it was "a great learning process on how to speak to venture capitalists." Their focus now is on expanding where the app is available. "In the end, we want this to be the standard practice for any homeowner getting their projects completed."
