The family of Gianluca Cellucci is organizaing a charity softball tournament, dubbed Gianluca’s Gift First Annual Softball Tournament, to be held in Aurora this summer in memory of Gianluca. The money raised will go toward the creation of The Gianluca Cellucci Northern Camp Adventure program at 360Kids and was spearheaded by his friends Matt and Jake in honour of Gianluca’s love for the outdoors. Anyone who knew the charismatic kid knew he’d do much more than that; they used to joke he’d one day be Canada’s first Italian prime minister. Over the next few months, his parents, sister, cousin, aunt and uncle and his closest friends began
meeting in the family’s basement - the same rec room where Gianluca and his buddies spent countless evenings with video games, workouts, sleepovers and laughter. In that place of fun memories, they hashed out an even bigger plan. They would establish a foundation in his honour, called Gianluca’s Gift, with the aim of helping an overlooked age group: out-of-

"Gianluca and his sister and their friends, they were all very lucky, born into families that provided opportunities they needed to be successful," Liokossis says. "A lot of [at-risk] kids are not bad kids. They just didn’t have those same opportunities or support and
I like to think Gianluca would be one of the ones to do that for them." Their first big fundraiser will be the "First Annual Gianluca’s Gift Softball Tournament". Before he died, Gianluca had been looking forward to playing with friends on a softball team. The team played without him that summer, wearing spiffy new Yiankees jer-

It was their first Christmas without Gianluca. After a painful year of learning to live without him after his brutal stabbing death earlier in the year, the 22-year-old’s family now faced the holidays without him - and the thought of not buying him a present, not tucking something special under the tree, not watching him unwrap it Christmas morning . It was too much for his mother, Joanna Liokossis, to bear. "We had to do something to honour him," she said. "And then the idea just popped into my head: 360Kids!" Gianluca was all about social justice. Call him, any time, any reason, and the Richmond Hill youth would rush to help. It may have been what cost him his life, that cold February night outside of a Vaughan nightclub. There was a fracas in the vacant parking lot at 120 Interchange Way and Gianluca was stabbed to death, his friend suffered serious stab wounds. "Gianluca stepped in; he wasn’t even involved in the fight," his mom recalls. "He didn’t like to see anyone taken advantage of, or hurt. He stepped in so his friend wouldn’t get hurt and he lost his life. There’s no greater sacrifice. He is a hero. "Unfortunately," she adds, in a quiet voice, "most heroes, don’t live." But heroes can live on in a legacy, and that’s what Gianluca’s family and friends hope for. That first Christmas without him, Liokossis suggested friends and family donate to 360Kids, supporting homeless and atrisk youth as a present to Gianluca. The idea quickly mushroomed. Gianluca lived life
seys (named after Gianluca’s nickname, Yian). "It was a little rough," his childhood friend Jacob Bruno recalls with a chuckle. "We looked good, but we lost!" Gianluca was probably laughing at them all, he says. "It was definitely a shot to the ego, but we got better and it was tons of fun." "And in true Gianluca form, they never gave up," Liokossis adds. "They persevered. That’s what they’re like; a good bunch of kids." Funds raised from next month’s softball tourney, as well as a dinner dance Oct. 6, will help establish a northern camp adventure program at 360Kids in his name. Gianluca’s gentle nature and adventurous spirit can live on that way, they say, his spirit sharing the great outdoors with underprivileged and troubled youth. As they work out the details in the basement rec room, Gianluca’s loved ones reminisce - about the time he jumped in the car at 3 a.m. when a friend’s cottage boat needed rescuing from a frigid October lake, about his regular hospital visits to the elderly man he worked with at Eagles Nest Golf Club. Whenever they get together like this, they feel his presence, and it lifts them up. Who knows what he could have done with his life, they wonder. "Even if it wasn’t anything on a grand scale, just by being who he was, Gianluca affected a lot of people and inspired a lot of us," Liokossis says. "We are keeping him alive, in a sense. Not our story to tell

In last week’s Metroland Central report, we explored something of what it’s like to be an Indigenous person at this time in our history. The scathing results of the Truth and Reconciliation report along with the lack of clean water on reserves and the national disgrace that is the gruesome number of murdered and missing Indigenous women across Canada, are top of mind at the same time our country is celebrating 150 years of Confederation. We all celebrate Canada, we’re proud of our county and all of its people. But the Europeans who claimed an already populated land made and broke countless treaties and conspired to destroy the myriad cultures of First Nations people were guilty of betrayal, murder, rape, cultural annihilation and genocide. Many will argue Canada would easily have lost the war of 1812 without the support of Tecumseh and the fear his warriors instilled in the hearts of the American troops. They won that war for Britain and the deals made to assure this were defaulted on. It is high time we faced these truths and worked toward reconciliation. So when we approached this piece we did it in the knowledge that we could not carry our colonialist viewpoint into the report. Our jobs are usually going out, getting information, and then writing and publishing what we learned. But in this case we were loath to take the words said to us by Indigenous people and put it through our own lens, thus distorting it with our views. The voices had to come directly from Indigenous minds. Our first step was to send three reporters into communities to talk with Indigenous people and ask them what we should write about and who to talk with. We brought that information back and it was clear the authors of our the bulk of our pieces had to be the ones living the experience. The result was two opinion pieces, one from a woman who will not be attending the fireworks celebrations this month, and the other from a woman who believes education is the answer to growth and healing. We spoke with Indigenous people in Toronto and on reserves; with families, young professionals and artists looking toward a bright future while honouring a dark past. There is inspiration in their stories and lessons to be learned about the similarities and differences we share. And we have photos. Spending a day with folks, letting the camera’s eye capture the experience rather than put it into our words seemed most honest to us. • LETTERS TO THE EDITOR • Impact of climate difficult to predict Re: Climate change: It’s here and not going away, so we must adapt, says expert, May 18. The report states that experts "predict we’ll see increased severe weather events due to climate change." Focusing on the current rise in water levels, the article quotes experts who insist that climate change is "here and it’s not going away," and insist that the government must adopt standards to reflect the new realities. The writer tells us that some York Region schools are now providing environmental studies to prepare students and to raise their levels of climate change awareness.
However, if we go back a mere 14 years much of the same hang-wringing in Ontario was taking place, but because water levels were drastically low; this continued right up to only a few years ago. News reports at the time quoted Environmental Canada citing studies which predicted decreasing water levels in the Great Lakes ranging from an additional loss of 40 to 100 cm over the next 20 - 40 years. Yet here we are, 14 years on and the reverse has occurred, dramatically so. More revealing, if we go back to 1987, water levels were so drastically high, probably higher than the current levels, that the In-

Meanwhile, our shipping industry, on which our lives depend, is happier with the increased levels than when ships were stranded during the low levels of 2003, demonstrating that the economic con-

Almost fluent now, Manukyan credits her progress to watching English language television, listening to radio and reading English books. While raising three children, she slips in English language practice whenever she has 15 or 20 minutes to spare. Now after learning English with the goal of improving it to match her Russian and Armenian abilities, Manukyan stresses the importance of learning a new language. "To me, to live in this country, to be a good citizen, you have to learn the language, the tradition, the culture. It’s important," she said.

Regina Chan, general manager of the Vaughan Welcome Centre, says a common theme among stories from English students is they wish they had learned the language faster. "A lot of students who share their story say they worked when they first came to Canada," Chan said. "Taking English classes was not a priority at the time - for survival they got a job." Chan says newcomers may have had enough English skills to "get by" at their first jobs, but after three or four years they felt "stuck." "That’s when they thought to come back, learn the language and explore new pathways for employment," Chan said. The centres are funded
Of the region’s 1.1 million residents, about 89 per cent speak English. Six per cent have knowledge of French, while five per cent of residents have no knowledge of either official language. Seventy-one per cent of residents speak English at home. Given the data on languages and the region’s growing immigrant communities, the Welcome Centres opened as a resource for newcomers and anyone to learn English. York Region Welcome Centres also aid newcomers in settlement and employment. With five centres across Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham and Newmarket, they offer services in several languages, including Arabic, Cambodian, Cantonese, English, Farsi, French, Hindi, Italian, Korean, Mandarin, Punjabi, Rus-

by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada and the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration, but managed by five agencies across York Region, including Social Enterprise and COSTI Immigrant Services. Social Enterprise partnership co-ordinator Darlene Brown says the centres were created knowing that most clients would not speak English fluently or at all. "With migratory trends being what they were, the anticipation was that this portion would grow over the years," she said. That demographic has grown considerably since the first Welcome Centre opened in Vaughan in 2007. After English, the most popular language in York Region is Chinese (including Cantonese and Manda-
rin). Approximately 12 per cent of York Region residents speak either Cantonese or Mandarin. Three per cent of residents speak Russian, two per cent speak Farsi, also known as Persian. Another two per cent of residents speak Italian and two per cent speak Tamil. Korean, Urdu, Spanish, Punjabi and Gujarati are spoken by one per cent of residents each. Three of those languages - Urdu, Punjabi and Gujarati originate from India and Pakistan, reflecting a growing community of South Asian Canadians. The last three per cent of residents speak Tagalog, Arabic, Vietnamese, Romanian and French. In total there are 122 languages spoken by York Region residents. Welcome Centres in different municipalities are
also reflecting which languages are growing in which part of the region. "You have a higher population of Asians in the Markham area," Brown said. "So they’re looking for supports with Asian languages and support for seniors. In Newmarket, we’re seeing a growing trend here with Farsi speakers, where before it used to be Russian." Chan says as the northern municipalities in York Region are also seeing a growth in foreign-language speakers. "Newmarket is now very mixed," she said. "We have Vietnamese- and Cambodian-speaking clients." Richmond Hill is home to several Farsi and Russian speakers, while Vaughan is seeing a growing Arabic-speaking community, Chan added.

Honey bees come to Hillcrest KIM ZARZOUR kzarzour@yrmg.com Hillcrest Mall could be the first shopping centre in Canada to welcome bees. The Richmond Hill mall has installed several bee hives on the rooftop and last month, wildflowers seeds were sown around the perimeter with hopes of harvesting 200 jars of honey in the fall. Residents in the neighbourhood surrounding the Yonge and Weldrick shopping centre are being encouraged to plant floral gardens as well, to encourage pollination. Marketing director Lisa Resnic says the pilot project is part of the mall’s focus on the environment. "We are taking sustainability to the next level." The Centre for Global Research reported this spring that one of the biggest dangers facing mankind is the loss of the global honeybee population. Bees play a significant

role in producing fruits and vegetables, and yet their numbers have been dying off at increasingly rapid rates - possibly due to climate change, increased use of pesticides, shrinking habitat and viruses. The mall has partnered with urban beekeeping organization Alveole which will ensure bi-weekly visits to the two-foot tall wooden boxes to ensure the bees there are healthy. The hives will start off accommodating approximately 10,000 bees, and have the potential to grow to 80,000 bees by the end of the season, Resnic says. A single hive can produce 10 kilograms of honey and extraction, done at Alveole’s honey house, will be livestreamed via @Shop_Hillcrest on Instagram. After the honey is harvested, Resnick says it will likely be donated to community ventures or incorporated into an indoor
honey-themed market to spread awareness about healthy bee populations. The company has assured the mall customers will be safe, and several rooftop hives are already underway in downtown Toronto, atop office towers and hotels, Resnic says. It’s not the only way Richmond Hill has welcomed flower-loving creatures. Last summer, town council signed the National Wildlife Federation mayors’ Monarch Pledge to help save endangered monarch butterflies. Research shows monarch populations have been steadily declining and in the last 20 years, decreased by 90 per cent. Among the steps to be taken, the town will support milkweed seed collection and propagation through Richmond Hill’s Seed Library and create a monarch neighbourhood challenge to create habitats.

This is an important month for those of the Muslim faith. It’s Ramadan, the holy month marked by dawn-to-dusk fasting. But did you know many other faiths also practise fasting? As many as 25 different religions carry out this spiritual practice, says Karim Aziz, outreach secretary with Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at of Richmond Hill. You can learn about how three of those faiths - Muslim, Jewish and Christian - view fasting as part of their religion at a special interfaith symposium in Richmond Hill, June 22. The presentation, featuring speakers from each faith group, is being hosted by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at. The free event includes a Q and A and wraps up with Iftar - a breaking of the fast for Muslims. It’s part of an annual info-sharing initiative to promote understanding and harmony, Aziz said. "We believe interfaith dialogue is the way to unite all religions . through community events that explore the teachings and practices of different faiths. There are so many differences and conflicts in the world. "There was no way he was going to get back up and the mother kept flying down to help, but there was nowhere to land." The 911 operator connected her to York Region-
al Police. "I suggested that if they had a net, they could scoop him up and they asked me why don’t I do that? I told them ’because then you’d be rescuing me!’" Laco followed police’s second suggestion, to contact Richmond Hill Fire and Emergency Services. Within minutes, several firefighters appeared.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC INFORMATION CENTRE #1 Environmental Assessment Study Kirby Road Extension between Dufferin Street and Bathurst Street City of Vaughan Rizmi Holdings Limited (RHL) authorized by the City of Vaughan is undertaking an Environmental Assessment Study (EA Study) to establish the preferred alignment and design for the extension of Kirby Road between Dufferin Street and Bathurst Street. The EA Study is conducted as a Schedule ‘C’ Municipal Road Project in accordance with the current Municipal Engineers Association Municipal Class Environmental Assessment process. The EA Study takes into account findings of the City of Vaughan Transportation Master Plan (2013) and the Regional Municipality of York Transportation Master Plan (2016). Both plans completed Phases 1 and 2 of the EA process and confirmed the need for Kirby Road extension. The approximate study area limits are shown on the map to the left. The EA process adapted for the EA Study includes: consultation with public and review agencies; screening and evaluation of alternative road alignments and design concepts; assessment and mitigation of potential effects of the proposed Kirby Road extension on the environment; preparation of an Environmental Study Report (ESR) that will document the study process and identify the preferred alignment and design for the extension of Kirby Road.

Snakes in a schoolyard? Not in Richmond Hill - or at least, not anymore. A teenager, who shocked park-goers earlier this month when he released his five pythons and a large lizard onto the muddy grass, has been told his exotic pet party is over. Father of Douglas (Jackie), David (deceased) and Nancy (deceased). Remembered by Grandchildren Adam, Heather, Brittny, and Chrissy, along with 8 Great-Grandchildren. Also fondly remembered by his sister Elizabeth. Horace was a Past Master of Prince of Wales #630 Lodge, a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, a member of Rameses Shrine, and the Shrine Legion of Honour. He was also Past President of Mackenzie Health Hospital Volunteers Association, where he served as a volunteer for 32 years. Visitation is Friday, June 23rd from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with a 15 minute Masonic Ceremony at 7:30 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 24th at 1:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
