Viva bus rapidway wins public works award

“I am very pleased the VivaNext rapidway project along Hwy. 7 was chosen for this prestigious award,” York Region CEO and chairperson Bill Fisch said. “The opening of this rapidway segment is part of a wider vision and critical investment in public transit that will help manage traffic congestion and reduce people’s reliance on cars to get around.”

The award is meant to recognize an organization that promotes excellence in the management and administration of public works projects, according to the association.

The stretch of the Hwy. 7 Viva bus rapidway that opened in Richmond Hill last summer received top honours from the Ontario Public Works Association last week.

The association gave the York Region Rapid Transit Corporation its Project of the Year Award in the category of transportation project valued at more than $50 million.

The 2.5-km segment of the Hwy. 7 VivaNext project was officially opened Aug. 18 and includes six stations, bike lanes, wider boulevards and two fully-accessible buildings that connect Hwy. 7 to Bayview Avenue with stairs and elevators.

Fire crews spent part of early Tuesday morning battling a fire that ripped through part of a Richmond Hill residential complex.

After the flames were extinguished, investigators sifted through the rubble in a bid to discover the cause of the fire at the townhouses in the 8600 block of Bayview Avenue, just north of Hw. 7.

Crews were alerted to the fire at about 2:30 a.m.

Residents were not the only ones in danger, according to media reports, a number of animals were also rescued from the building.

No injuries were reported.

An investigation is underway.

ICE STORM CLEANUP DOWNED TREES & DEBRIS REMOVAL Public Property – Cleanup of downed or damaged Town trees that pose an immediate hazard is a priority and is ongoing. It is expected to continue until the end of February. To report downed trees on public property, call Access Richmond Hill at 905-771-8800.

A focused cleanup of tree debris along streets is ongoing. Staff are focusing on the hardest hit areas ďŹ rst. A roadside tree debris cleanup map can be found on the Town’s website. Please be advised that staff will return at a later date to remove any debris that is encased in ice and snow. It is expected that cleanup will take several weeks to complete.

Residents can expect delays in tree cleanup areas such as parks, woodlots, open spaces and non-hazardous residential and commercial areas. Whenever possible, please avoid woodlots, trails, parks and open spaces until these areas have been fully addressed and any hazards removed.

Private Property – Residents are asked to bring larger branches to the curb and the Town will take them away and/or chip the material. Please do not place yard waste in ditches as it could block culverts and impede drainage. Please place the chopped portion/cut edge of branches/limbs towards the road, as it will assist crews with the cleanup.

TREE MAINTENANCE Residents and businesses with damaged trees on their private property are encouraged to consult with a professional arborist (found in the Yellow Pages and other business directories).

The Tree Preservation By-law requires a permit be obtained to cut down trees on private property with a diameter of 20 cm or more. If you believe your tree is a hazard, please photograph the damaged parts and send the images with your permit application to access@richmondhill.ca, or bring them to the 8th oor, Main Municipal OfďŹ ces. Staff will respond in priority sequence. Permit fees are not required for extensive ice storm damage.

Conservatives pick wrong battle with veterans Conservative government closes multiple Veterans Affairs offices.

C

anadian veterans found themselves in another battle this week, but this time it was against our own government and, this time, they lost.

The Conservatives closed eight Veterans Affairs offices — Kelowna, B.C.; Saskatoon, Sask.; Brandon, Man.; Thunder Bay and Windsor, Ont.; Sydney, N.S.; Charlottetown, PEI; and Corner Brook, N.L — Friday and then, Monday, voted down a lastditch-effort motion by the NDP that would have kept them open.

The Conservatives say the office cuts coincide with a drop in demand.

Service Canada centres will offer assistance in affected areas and there will also be Veterans Affairs Canada services online.

But veterans argue the service won’t be the same.

On the face of it, the Conservative government is finding efficiencies and savings, so they’re eliminating 100 jobs as a result of a decrease in service needs.

But as much as Canadians want a reduced deficit, most of us do not want to see the men and women who fought for our rights and freedoms left out in the cold.

It’s hard to condone going after our aging war heroes in light of the continued scandals that waste taxpayers’ money.

Why not go after the expenses of MPs and senators?

Bev Oda had her wrist slapped over switching a London reservation from a five-star hotel to an even more expensive accommodation.

She also hired a chauffeur to drive her around in a luxury car and signed off on $16 glasses of orange juice.

She was forced to repay some of the illegal claims only after the

Unfortunately, that’s not an isolated incident.

There’s a troubling sense of privilege among elected officials that’s exposed regularly.

What about the plum pensions they receive?

It’s hard to condone going after our aging war heroes in light of the continued scandals that waste taxpayers’ money.

Even after the most recent changes, which mean MPs will have to wait until 65 to collect their full pension, instead of the current age of 55, they still qualify for the lucrative plan after serving six years in office.

And, of course, there’s the most recent scandal that saw senators incorrectly claiming expenses.

The Veterans Affairs cuts don’t have a direct impact on York Region, but it’s fair to say this is a bitter taste of the future under this government.

In fact, the government is expected to cut 784 Veterans Affairs jobs in the next two years.

We don’t doubt there will come a time when tough decisions have to be made. But leave our veterans alone and find the savings elsewhere.

This government needs to show more respect to the men and women who fought for this country.

Program cuts are a fact of life right now, but going after veterans now is wrong move.

BOTTOM LINE:

Town, water taxes from same wallet Re: Residents had numerous ways to offer budget input, editorial, Jan. 30.

The editorial stated “at this point in the months-long budget process, the proposed budget increase is 2.04 per cent”.

But this is not a correct number. Here are the calculations done by my wallet.

My last year’s property tax was almost $3,600 with the Richmond Hill portion of $900.

Now, starting from this year, roughly $45 or 5 per cent of my tax moves from my tax bill into my water bill, but will be paid from the same wallet. Plus roughly a 2-per-cent increase to that $900 heralded by town hall with the total coming to 7 per cent.

This is too much of a hit to said wallet. That’s why some councillors and residents are still try to persuade staff and council to exclude unnecessary expenses from the budget.

To achieve a true 2-percent tax increase, council should decrease my tax bill by 3 per cent, no?

If the readers of The Liberal find any flaw in my wallet’s calculations, please let me know. That would bring tremendous relief to me and my wallet.

Yes, Thornhill people earn minimum wage Behind the carefully manicured lawns of our Thornhill neighbourhood lies a story that some in our community wish not to hear about.

It is the story of the minimum wage workers who live among us.

Who are they? The mom who struggles to pay her rent in a Thornhill basement apartment who wants to give her child a better life.

The multiple students who strive every day to find ways to top up their RESPs by juggling school work and part-time retail jobs.

They are the young people, fresh out of university and college, who believed that higher education was a ticket to a better life.

They are the friends and the neighbours and the children of those living in our

community. They are some of the faces behind the beautiful brick houses. They are a microcosm of communities throughout Ontario.

Premier Kathleen Wynne announced that minimum wage in Ontario will soon be raised to $11 an hour.

Some wish to frighten us by saying that it will either kill jobs or cause businesses to go out of business. I disagree with this premise.

Small and large companies will, for the most part, adapt to this change. They will need to raise their prices slightly to offset the additional overheads due to the increase in minimum wages paid to their employees.

Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Poloz warned about the dangers of disinflation that could shrink our economy. Raising the minimum wage can result in companies raising prices slightly, which could help prevent disinflation.

This is a case for raising the minimum wage of workers.

The bigger case, though, is that it is the right and decent thing to do.

We’re only one week into our second full month of winter and, for many of us, it already feels like an endurance test.

So far, winter 2013-14 has given us an ice storm, freezing polar vortex and seemingly endless snowfall.

Wednesday brought more of the white stuff with parts of the GTA, York Region included, expecting 10 to 20 centimetres more snow.

The latest blast of winter weather led to bus cancellations across the region and resulted in York Regional Police and OPP responding to dozens of crashes.

As if to add insult to injury, groundhogs Wiarton Willie and Punxsutawney Phil saw their shadows Sunday, meaning six more weeks of winter. Fortunately, Shubenacadie Sam, Nova Scotia’s most famous weatherforecasting woodchuck, managed to miss his shadow, supposedly heralding an early spring, but, then again, he might only be predicting relief for Maritimes residents.

Regardless of your thoughts on the clairvoyance of groundhogs, the fact remains it has been a rough winter.

It’s too early to sat how much York Region has spent battling blizzards and freezing rain thus far, roads maintenance manager Joseph

Petrungaro said, but the annual budget for winter roads upkeep is about $16 million.

The region definitely when higher than that number for 2013, thanks in large part to the ice storm, he said.

Last year saw regional workers respond to 104 winter events, Mr. Petrungaro said, whereas a typical winter dishes out about 75.

We also saw about 75 hours of freezing rain in 2013, compared to 10 in 2012, he said.

“Freezing rain is pretty aggressive,” he said.

“It’s about the hardest thing to combat.”

The difficulty is every time you salt a road during a freezing rain storm, the melting ice dilutes the salt and can lead to re-freezing, Mr. Petrungaro said.

As such, the roads require near-constant attention during freezing rain events, he said.

To determine its response to inclement weather, the region monitors conditions and pavement temperatures at five sites spread throughout York, Mr. Petrungaro said.

Through these, staff gets localized forecasts from the Weather Network and can predict how cold its road surfaces will be to select the best response to the conditions, he explained, adding staff is also on patrol 24/7.

helpful, as it spreads saltwater over the surface of the road. Over time, the water component evaporates, leaving a salt residue behind that can melt incoming snow or freezing rain, Mr. Petrungaro said.

The problem is, if the pavement temperature dips to -6 C or colder, there is a danger the water may not evaporate. Given the solution is about 75-per-cent water, it can actually make your ice problem worse if not used at the right time, he said.

In colder temperatures, the region will put down rock salt to melt ice and snow and keep the roads clear, Mr. Petrungaro said. However, at about -12 C this, too, starts to lose its effectiveness, as the reaction happens too slowly to help, he explained.

In extremely cold temperatures, when neither brine nor salt will do, the region will simply sand the roadways, he added.

“It’s there for traction,” Mr. Petrungaro said, “to help people to steer and stop.”

The numbers aren’t yet known for how much salt and sand the region used last year, but Mr. Petrungaro said it put down about 1.5-million litres of brine. Crews also plowed, salted and sanded about 800,000 kilometres worth of road, he said, or a little more than the distance from Earth to the moon and back.

In addition to the region, York’s local-tier municipalities are also working hard to keep winter from blocking your way.

No matter where you live, Mr. Petrungaro urges you to adjust your life to winter weather.

That means giving yourself extra time to get where you’re going on stormy days, taking

transit or working from home if you can, he said, adding rushing on slippery roads and not driving to the conditions puts everyone at risk.

Finally, he asked that you give snowplows plenty of room on the roads.

They might be slow, but behind one is often the safest place to be, he added.

RICHMOND HILL Between Nov. 1 and Jan. 31, Richmond Hill spent $2.3 million on winter maintenance.

That’s around $1 million more than what was spent during the same period in 201213.

The town has also adjusted its sand-salt mixture from 50-50 to 100 per cent salt, but lowered the application rate, town spokesperson Carol Moore said. The amount of snow has been problematic, she said, as there is limited space on the municipal boulevards to store snow. The town also continues to remove snow on regional road allowances where sidewalks are close to the curbs.

The town has 24 snow plows operating during a full-plow event and 18 sidewalk plows ready to go when a full response is required, Ms Moore said.

There are also additional resources in place to clear parking lots at community centres and municipal offices and the town clears more than 1,000 windrows for senior citizens and disabled residents within 24 hours of a snowfall.

Byelections will alter landscape Looking for a cold-weather-coping mechanism that doesn’t involve copious bottles of wine, a roaring fireplace and Netflix?

Try following one of the hottest election races in the province.

The Feb. 13 byelection in the riding of Thornhill, which is made up of portions of Vaughan and Markham, is giving us a taste of what’s to come if there’s a provincial election this spring (yes, when the snow melts, eventually).

Premier Kathleen Wynne called byelections in affluent Thornhill, in the wake of Progressive Conservative MPP Peter Shurman’s resignation, and in blue collar Niagara Falls, to replace resigned Liberal Kim Craitor.

Regardless of who takes home the prize in the byelections, the minority status of the Liberal government won’t change. However, the political landscape at Queen’s Park will be impacted by what will be seen as a barometer of the voters’ mood so close to the general election expected this spring.

The much trumpeted presence of the three main party leaders, as well as assorted MPPs, MPs and cabinet ministers — not to mention, federal Liberal Party Leader Justin Trudeau — indicates the high stakes, particularly for the Liberals and PCs. Thus, it didn’t take long for the knives to come out.

While Premier Wynne vowed “a strong, positive, constructive campaign”, she wasted no time in warning the

PCs would pick up where former premier Mike Harris left off, firing teachers and closing hospitals, and that the NDP don’t have a plan for anything.

Really, is that the best they got? The specter of a premier of more than a decade ago?

PC Leader Tim Hudak doesn’t have to reach very far back to find the specter of a Liberal premier with a legacy of spending scandals, coverups and tax hikes, and he says it’s the Liberals who don’t have a plan for anything.

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath agrees.

The issues are the same ones we’ll hear next spring: job creation; easing congestion and offering more public transit — and how we pay for that; reducing spending and the debt; and lowering hydro rates and health care wait lists.

The premier announced goodies for Niagara just before the byelections — $75 million for a wine strategy and $26 million towards a new hospital — that cynics will see as the typical Liberal “seat saver program” in action.

Thornhill has yet to see any bounty, just more of an

unfunded promise to extend the subway to Richmond Hill.

The PCs vow to fund it.

True to form, it’s a tight race between PCs and Liberals.

“It is hard to find a more consistently tight riding in Ontario,” says ThreeHundredEight.com, a byelection barometer website that claims it hasn’t made a wrong call in 27 byelections. It’s forecasting “likely PC”.

A loss in Thornhill would certainly revive questions about Mr. Hudak’s leadership, the last thing he needs on the cusp of an election.

Losses would also harm the Liberals as they prepare a spring budget that will likely be their campaign platform.

That leaves Ms Horwath with the most to gain and least to lose once again.

Undoubtedly, the outcome of the byelection will help determine which party has the momentum as we head toward the big election.

There’s nothing like a little pre-election electioneering to warm the cockles of your heart, right?

Well, that, or booking a getaway trip to balmier climes.

That’s why the mother of two teenagers has put her name forward for the position of Ward 4 councillor. dents, including infrastructure, transportation, affordable housing, engaging youth, social services and communication with residents.

But she adds these “mega projects cost money and these projects will need to be prioritized by the entire council. We need to be fiscally responsible with taxpayer money and not be running up debt that will have to be paid by our children and grandchildren.�

Ms Freedman said she will work with all members of council in a respectful, cohesive manner to create a safe, positive community. “Residents deserve to have a councillor who openly communicates with them on an on-going basis. Decisions that might impact safe neighbourhoods, families and their homes cannot be made in a vacuum. I promise open and honest communication with the people of Ward 4.�

Dog-park opponents say they will sue town

Residents living near a leashfree dog park are poised to sue the Town of Richmond Hill after councillors voted unanimously Monday to keep the Tower Hill park open.

Olga Gerber, of Moraine Ridge Drive, said 14 residents have launched a statement of claim against the town and are seeking $2.5 million in damages.

The committee of the whole decided Monday not to close the park and to add two more leash-free parks elsewhere in town after hearing from eight park supporters, as well as three residents who argued the off-leash facility has caused problems in their neighbourhood and should be closed.

The decision goes to full council for a final vote next Monday.

A staff report recommended one of two options: closing the original off-leash park in the spring of 2014 at a cost of $14,300, or keeping it open permanently, setting aside $15,000 to mitigate noise problems and investigate two more locations for new dog parks.

— to keep the off-leash facility open, along with a larger off-leash facility at Phyllis Rawlinson park, and asking staff to report back on two additional off-leash areas, one to be built in the south portion of town and another in Oak Ridges.

The motion called for an investigation into changing the Tower Hill park entrance and moving fences to allow for large tree plantings to reduce noise.

But those who oppose the park

said the changes won’t solve their problems. They served a statement of claim against the town Aug. 27.

Ms Gerber said the group is seeking six more claimants in order to file a class action lawsuit, should the decision be confirmed next week.

She said her community has been plagued with barking, parking troubles and dog feces since the park opened as a pilot project in 2009.

Laima Slizauskas, former resident in the Tower Hill neighbourhood,

said residents were not consulted.

“This dog park business wasn’t very honest from the beginning,” she said. “Please close the dog park and start fresh.”

Ward 5 Councillor Nick Papa said he wouldn’t want a dog park to be opened behind his house after he’d moved there, “so for us to be dumping a dog park in there, it’s really offending the people here and I feel for them”.

He suggested dog owners should pay to use leash-free facilities “same as any other user fees. I send my little girls to dancing lessons, I pay for it. I don’t get anything for free and I don’t expect anyone else to get for free”.

“Dog parks are not about dogs any more than baseball diamonds are about baseballs,” he added. “We make these recreational facilities for the people that participate.”

Pro dog-park delegations, including Dave Walker, co-chairperson of the Richmond Hill K9 Club, spoke of the “long bumpy road”, marked by protests and petitions, to keep the park open.

He said the club is committed to

ensure any dog parks in town be kept free of pet waste, will encourage adherence to responsible pet ownership rules and facilitate co-operation by users and local residents.

Adriana Pisano Beaumont, club co-chairperson, presented a video depicting park volunteerism, partnerships and community-building.

“It’s been a long, four-year effort with passions flaring for and against.

In those four years, park users have built a community that’s engaged and vibrant, a community that gives back and feels connected to something bigger,” said Ms Beaumont.

She questioned the idea of user fees, as suggested by Mr. Papa.

Some revenues from dog licences could be directed to dog parks if there were more compliance, she said, but “if all greenspace has to be revenue generating, then how do we justify trails and playgrounds”?

Mr. West predicted dog parks will become more popular, especially in the southern part of town with growing number of condominiums and houses with smaller yards.

Lessons were learned from the pilot dog park and the controversy that it created within a neighbourhood, he said, so the next parks must be done “properly. But this is not just about dogs,” he said. “It’s a really costeffective way to build community.”

This may have been the worst winter in years for trees, commuters and school board snow days, but it is shaping up to be the best for Richmond Hill’s winter carnival.

The terrific ice conditions on the Mill Pond mean the bed race is a go at this weekend’s event, as are children’s skating races and the elementary school hockey tournament finals.

It’s the 46th year for the popular carnival that takes place in the old village core at Mill Pond Park, Friday through Sunday.

Saturday morning will see Pleasantville Public School hockey players compete against Corpus Christi Catholic School Junior Game at 10 a.m. followed by Father Henri Nouwen Catholic School against Our Lady of Annunciation Catholic School.

Zorba balls are a much anticipated new feature this year, as are Ontario Naturalists, Jungle Cat World and on Saturday night, Ontario craft brewers beer tasting in the main tent.

The bed race will see York Regional police going head-to-head (or bed-to-bed) against Richmond Hill fire department.

There will also be sleigh rides around the pond and skydivers twice a day, Saturday and Sunday, a wing-eating contest, midway rides, snowboarders’ halfpipe and pancake breakfast.

And, of course, the carnival mascot will make his appearance. Ookpik, a mythical owl, is in charge of “public relations, hugs and high fives”.

Free shuttle buses run loops with stops at Richmond Heights Plaza, the southeast corner of Bernard and Yonge, the northwest corner of Yonge and Carrville and the Richmond Hill Central Library.

“We try to be ‘good neighbours’ and minimize parking around the pond,” said carnival chairperson Michele Bussieres.

Mill Street will be closed from Trench to Leisure Lane for the duration of Carnival.

Carpooling couple enjoying life in fast lane

While the rest of us were sitting, stressing in traffic, Patrick and Megan Lui were having some cozy couple time.

They planned trips, discussed projects around the home, and when Megan was pregnant and the baby kicked, she placed Patrick’s hand on her tummy and they shared that special moment, too.

It’s what can happen when you carpool, they say.

The two have been sharing a ride together since 2008 and on Mondays and Fridays, they also carpool with a co-worker who works with them at the Town of Richmond Hill.

Each weekday morning, the trip begins at 7:50 a.m. when they drop off their 15-month-old daughter at daycare. Sometimes, they stop to pick up the third carpooler, arriving at about 8:20 a.m.

The partnership saves minutes — about half the time it would take if they used local transit. And it saves them money, being able to get by without two cars.

“We haven’t sat down with a spread sheet, but I’m thinking it’d be about $10,000 at least,” said Patrick,

referring to the cost of purchasing a second car and paying for insurance, gas and maintenance.

Another bonus — parking closer to the town hall entrance doors, in a preferred area set up for carpoolers — has been especially welcome during this winter’s nasty weather.

It’s the kind of good news story the folks at Smart Commute Markham Richmond Hill like to talk about.

This is Carpool Week in the GTA, Feb. 3 to 9, an annual campaign encouraging people to carpool and letting them know how much they can save by driving to work or school with at least one other person.

Two people sharing a 50-kilometre return commute five days a week will each save $54 on gasoline alone in one month, said Malon Edwards, spokesperson for Smart Commute.

The environment, too, benefits when drivers double up, by improving air quality and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Then there’s the gridlock issue.

There were times when the Luis lived in downtown Toronto and commuted to Richmond Hill, that they flew along the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes.

“It was eye opening,” Patrick said. “Just so amazing to see people

Megan also noticed other commuters, alone in their vehicles, and has been grateful she had company.

“The few times we’ve had to commute alone, it seems to take longer.”

“You look at the single drivers and they look bored,” he said.

In fact, the couple claims their relationship strengthened because they share a carpool commute. For parents of a toddler, adult conversation time can be hard to find.

“It’s a nice opportunity to talk, plan things, trips ... it’s 40 minutes for just the two of us, something we wouldn’t have if we were in separate cars,” Megan said.

It started as a practical solution.

They lived downtown and only had one car. Patrick worked with the town in parks planning, Megan worked a little further north (she now works at the town, too, as sustainable transportation co-ordinator).

They moved to central Richmond Hill in March, and another co-worker began joining them on the drive.

“People seem surprised, saying ‘Wow, you actually can do that [carpool] in a suburban environment?’”

Patrick said.

“Most people think it takes more time ... you have to change your schedule, find partners... But once you try and see how it works, it’s not such a daunting task,” said Megan.

“To support members of the Richmond Hill and Markham Chinese Business Association to develop their business into the mainstream, we would like to work with the Richmond Hill Chamber of Commerce” to achieve this aim, said Annie Ho, president of the Chinese business association, having the support of past presidents Daisy Wai and Ben Leung.

Why does my pet smell?

Odors can often be your first clue to a bacterial infection. Common conditions such as ear infections, gum disease from dental plaque buildup or full anal glands can all be the cause of these odors. Frequent ear and skin infections often indicate allergies. In dogs it can also sometimes indicate a low thyroid hormone level (Hypothyroidism).

You can be proactive in preventing odors from your pets by brushing their teeth and placing them on a dental diet. It is helpful to clean their ears of any debris regularly and monitor scooting in your dog which is a sign of full anal glands.

Father, son bond over 200th blood donation It was an emotional father son bonding moment.

Last Thursday, Thornhill resident Eric Lakien made his 200th blood donation. Not only was his son, Joshua, among the family members cheering this generous accomplishment, but Joshua also made his very first blood donation at the same time.

The Lakien family came to the Hillcrest Mall permanent blood donor clinic in Richmond Hill, along with close friends. Mr. Lakien invited them to consider giving blood during his milestone 200th blood donation, which is an impressive accomplishment, as it can take nearly three decades to achieve.

Four family members and friends did accept Mr. Lakien’s challenge, and gave blood with him, including son Joshua, who rolled up his sleeve for the very first time.

Standing by his son’s side, Mr. Lakien commented how proud he was.

“To see him in that chair, with the blood flowing into the bag, was very emotional. I was very proud of two things – of course, that he had donated — but also that I had motivated him to give.”

Canadian Blood Services requires more than 80,000 new donors to give blood each year to support the ongoing demand for blood and blood products.

Gift from the Heart offers free dental care Saturday

Gift From the Heart Day will be held in Richmond Hill this Saturday, Feb. 8.

It’s a charity event organized by dental hygienists to give back to their communities across Ontario by providing no cost dental hygiene care.

The charitable event began in 2009 and the response was overwhelming.

Richmond Hill Dental Hygiene will be participating in Gift From the Heart Day again this year.

Mary Skrijelj, along with other participating registered dental hygienists, will open her Richmond Hill Dental Hygiene clinic on Cartier Crescent to provide oral health care to people who may be financially unable to pay for dental hygiene care or who have difficulty accessing dental hygiene treatment.

Bayview Watercolour artists present month-long exhibit Interested in paintings done in watercolour, acrylic and mixed media?

Bayview Watercolour Society presents its Impression of the Heart 2014 Juried Art Exhibition and Sale at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts, 10268 Yonge St., Feb. 4 to Mar. 2. Admission is free.

A special reception and award presentation will be held Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. at the Rouge Woods Community Centre, Aspen room B, 110 Shirley Dr. Karin Isenburg will be the juror for this exhibit.

The exhibition is open Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturdays 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and is closed Sundays.

Richmond Hill has many talented artists and the fall Studio Tour & Art Sale, this year set for the weekend of Oct. 18 and 19, is a great way for the community to find out about these artists.

The Town of Richmond Hill is seeking talented artisans of all kinds — fine artists, sculptors, glass artists, wood workers, fibre artists and potters.

Lightning U-16A win on home rink

The Richmond Hill Lighting under-16A team had a score to settle when they faced Mitchell in the final of the Richmond Hill Ringette Tournament, Sunday.

After losing a round-robin game to Mitchell, the Lightning gained a measure of revenge by defeating them when it mattered most, by a 5-3 decision to claim the tournament title.

The Lightning never trailed after they jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Mitchell rallied to tie the score. The Lightning responded with two unanswered goals to take a 4-2 lead and never looked back.

Kylie Nobes orchestrated the Lightning attack with a pair of goals while Isabel Boni, Lehna Shukster and Lisette Schulz each added singles. Sara Gervasi helped preserve the win with some timely stops in goal.

In other tournament action, the Lightning under-10 Harling entry reached the final before suffering a 6-5 loss to Whitby to claim the silver medal.

Makayla Nunno scored twice for the Lightning, while Taryn Joy, Alexa Togneri and Caelynn Wiseman each added singles.

The Lightning under-12P West team finished first with three other teams with identical 2-1-1 records in round-robin play. But when the tiebreaker rules came into play, the Lightning finished fourth and out of the final.

Similarly, the Lightning under-10-Lee team finished round robin play with an identical record as the under-10-Harling team, but

missed out on the final due to goal differential.

Teams from Goderich were the big winners in the tournament with all four teams entered coming away with gold medals in their respective divisions.

Walden also had four teams entered in the same divisions as Goderich, taking silver medals in three of those divisions.

Among results posted by other Richmond Hill teams in the tournament, the under-14B, under-14A-West, and under-14AA teams finished third overall; the under-10-Laughlin, under-12, under-12P-Zanon, and under-19A teams finished fourth; under-16AA finished tied for fifth but was ranked sixth after tiebreaker rules were applied; and the under-14AThompson team finished seventh.

In the Under-12 Regional final, the Goderich and Walden teams entertained the crowd with a terrific see-saw battle.

The Goderich team jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, only to see the Walden team storm back for a 3-2 lead before the Goderich team reclaimed the lead at 4-3.

The Walden team continued to press for the equalizer and with time running out and the goalie benched for an extra attacker; tied the score at 4-4 with 14.4 seconds remaining.

Just when it appeared the game would go into overtime, Goderich penetrated the Walden zone and scored with 4.4 seconds remaining on the clock to win the game 5-4.
